Resolvent Estimates for the Stokes Operator in Bounded and Exterior $C^1$ Domains

We establish resolvent estimates in $L^q$ spaces for the Stokes operator in a bounded $C^1$ domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$. As a corollary, it follows that the Stokes operator generates a bounded analytic semigroup in $L^q(Ω; \mathbb{C}^d)$ for any $1< q< \infty$ and $d\ge 2$. The case of an exterior $C^1$ domain is also studied.

Population dynamics under demographic and environmental stochasticity

The present paper is devoted to the study of the long term dynamics of diffusion processes modelling a single species that experiences both demographic and environmental stochasticity. In our setting, the long term dynamics of the diffusion process in the absence of demographic stochasticity is determined by the sign of $Λ_0$, the external Lyapunov exponent, as follows: $Λ_0<0$ implies (asymptotic) extinction and $Λ_0>0$ implies convergence to a unique positive stationary distribution $μ_0$. If the system is of size $\frac{1}{ε^{2}}$ for small $ε>0$ (the intensity of demographic stochasticity), demographic effects will make the extinction time finite almost surely. This suggests that to understand the dynamics one should analyze the quasi-stationary distribution (QSD) $μ_ε$ of the system. The existence and uniqueness of the QSD is well-known under mild assumptions. We look at what happens when the population size is sent to infinity, i.e., when $ε\to 0$. We show that the external Lyapunov exponent still plays a key role: 1) If $Λ_0<0$, then $μ_ε\to δ_0$, the mean extinction time is of order $|\ln ε|$ and the extinction rate associated with the QSD $μ_ε$ has a lower bound of order $\frac{1}{|\lnε|}$; 2) If $Λ_0>0$, then $μ_ε\to μ_0$, the mean extinction time is polynomial in $\frac{1}{ε^{2}}$ and the extinction rate is polynomial in $ε^{2}$. Furthermore, when $Λ_0>0$ we are able to show that the system exhibits multiscale dynamics: at first the process quickly approaches the QSD $μ_ε$ and then, after spending a polynomially long time there, it relaxes to the extinction state. We give sharp asymptotics in $ε$ for the time spent close to $μ_ε$.

CoMoFusion: Fast and High-quality Fusion of Infrared and Visible Image with Consistency Model

Generative models are widely utilized to model the distribution of fused images in the field of infrared and visible image fusion. However, current generative models based fusion methods often suffer from unstable training and slow inference speed. To tackle this problem, a novel fusion method based on consistency model is proposed, termed as CoMoFusion, which can generate the high-quality images and achieve fast image inference speed. In specific, the consistency model is used to construct multi-modal joint features in the latent space with the forward and reverse process. Then, the infrared and visible features extracted by the trained consistency model are fed into fusion module to generate the final fused image. In order to enhance the texture and salient information of fused images, a novel loss based on pixel value selection is also designed. Extensive experiments on public datasets illustrate that our method obtains the SOTA fusion performance compared with the existing fusion methods.

Dirichlet Problems in Perforated Domains

In this paper we establish $W^{1,p}$ estimates for solutions $u_\varepsilon$ to Laplace's equation with the Dirichlet condition in a bounded and perforated, not necessarily periodically, $C^1$ domain $Ω_{\varepsilon, η}$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$. The bounding constants depend explicitly on two small parameters $\varepsilon$ and $η$, where $\varepsilon$ represents the scale of the minimal distance between holes, and $η$ denotes the ratio between the size of the holes and $\varepsilon$. The proof relies on a large-scale $L^p$ estimate for $\nabla u_\varepsilon$, whose proof is divided into two parts. In the first part, we show that as $\varepsilon, η$ approach zero, harmonic functions in $Ω_{\varepsilon, η}$ may be approximated by solutions of an intermediate problem for a Schrödinger operator in $Ω$. In the second part, a real-variable method is employed to establish the large-scale $L^p$ estimate for $\nabla u_\varepsilon$ by using the approximation at scales above $\varepsilon$. The results are sharp except in the case $d\ge 3$ and $p=d$ or $d^\prime$.

Uniform regularity for degenerate elliptic equations in perforated domains

This paper is concerned with a class of degenerate elliptic equations with rapidly oscillating coefficients in periodically perforated domains, which arises in the study of spectrum problems for uniformly elliptic equations in perforated domains. We establish a quantitative convergence rate and obtain the uniform weighted Lipschitz and $W^{1,p}$ estimates.

Critical Sets of Solutions of Elliptic Equations in Periodic Homogenization

In this paper we study critical sets of solutions $u_\e$ of second-order elliptic equations in divergence form with rapidly oscillating and periodic coefficients. We show that the $(d-2)$-dimensional Hausdorff measures of the critical sets are bounded uniformly with respect to the period $\e$, provided that doubling indices for solutions are bounded. The key step is an estimate of "turning " for the projection of a non-constant solution $u_\e$ onto the subspace of spherical harmonics of order $\ell$, when the doubling index for $u_\e$ on a sphere $\partial B(0, r)$ is trapped between $\ell -δ$ and $\ell +δ$, for $r$ between $1$ and a minimal radius $r^*\ge C_0\e$. This estimate is proved by using harmonic approximation successively. With a suitable $L^2$ renormalization as well as rescaling we are able to control the accumulated errors introduced by homogenization and projection. Our proof also gives uniform bounds for Minkowski contents of the critical sets.

DePF: A Novel Fusion Approach based on Decomposition Pooling for Infrared and Visible Images

Infrared and visible image fusion aims to generate synthetic images simultaneously containing salient features and rich texture details, which can be used to boost downstream tasks. However, existing fusion methods are suffering from the issues of texture loss and edge information deficiency, which result in suboptimal fusion results. Meanwhile, the straight-forward up-sampling operator can not well preserve the source information from multi-scale features. To address these issues, a novel fusion network based on the decomposition pooling (de-pooling) manner is proposed, termed as DePF. Specifically, a de-pooling based encoder is designed to extract multi-scale image and detail features of source images at the same time. In addition, the spatial attention model is used to aggregate these salient features. After that, the fused features will be reconstructed by the decoder, in which the up-sampling operator is replaced by the de-pooling reversed operation. Different from the common max-pooling technique, image features after the de-pooling layer can retain abundant details information, which is benefit to the fusion process. In this case, rich texture information and multi-scale information are maintained during the reconstruction phase. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method exhibits superior fusion performance over the state-of-the-arts on multiple image fusion benchmarks.

Darcy's Law for Porous Media with Multiple Microstructures

In this paper we study the homogenization of the Dirichlet problem for the Stokes equations in a perforated domain with multiple microstructures. First, under the assumption that the interface between subdomains is a union of Lipschitz surfaces, we show that the effective velocity and pressure are governed by a Darcy law, where the permeability matrix is piecewise constant. The key step is to prove that the effective pressure is continuous across the interface, using Tartar's method of test functions. Secondly, we establish the sharp error estimates for the convergence of the velocity and pressure, assuming the interface satisfies certain smoothness and geometric conditions. This is achieved by constructing two correctors. One of them is used to correct the discontinuity of the two-scale approximation on the interface, while the other is used to correct the discrepancy between boundary values of the solution and its approximation.

Uniform $W^{1, p}$ Estimates and Large-Scale Regularity for Dirichlet Problems in Perforated Domains

In this paper we study the Dirichlet problem for Laplace's equation in a domain $ω_{ε, η}$ perforated periodically with small holes in $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $ε$ represents the scale of the minimal distances between holes and $η$ the ratio between the scale of sizes of holes and $ε$. We establish $W^{1, p}$ estimates for solutions with bounding constants depending explicitly on $ε$ and $η$. The proof relies on a large-scale Lipschitz estimate for harmonic functions in perforated domains. The results are optimal for $d\ge 2$.

We also show that these estimates are either optimal or near optimal.

Uniform Boundary Controllability and Homogenization of Wave Equations

We obtain sharp convergence rates, using Dirichlet correctors, for solutions of wave equations in a bounded domain with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. The results are used to prove the exact boundary controllability that is uniform in $ε$ - the scale of the microstructure, for the projection of solutions to the subspace generated by the eigenfunctions with eigenvalues less that $Cε^{-1/2}$.

Critical Sets of Elliptic Equations with Rapidly Oscillating Coefficients in Two Dimensions

In this paper we continue the study of critical sets of solutions $u_\e$ of second-order elliptic equations in divergence form with rapidly oscillating and periodic coefficients. In \cite{Lin-Shen-3d}, by controling the "turning" of approximate tangent planes, we show that the $(d-2)$-dimensional Hausdorff measures of the critical sets are bounded uniformly with respect to the period $\e$, provided that doubling indices for solutions are bounded. In this paper we use a different approach, based on the reduction of the doubling indices of $u_\e$, to study the two-dimensional case. The proof relies on the fact that the critical set of a homogeneous harmonic polynomial of degree two or higher in dimension two contains only one point.

Sharp Convergence Rates for Darcy's Law

This paper is concerned with Darcy's law for an incompressible viscous fluid flowing in a porous medium. We establish the sharp $O(\sqrt{\e})$ convergence rate in a periodically perforated and bounded domain in $R^d$ for $d\ge 2$, where $\e$ represents the size of solid obstacles. This is achieved by constructing two boundary correctors to control the boundary layers created by the incompressibility condition and the discrepancy of boundary values between the solution and the leading term in its asymptotic expansion. One of the correctors deals with the tangential boundary data, while the other handles the normal boundary data.

Compactness and Large-Scale Regularity for Darcy's Law

This paper is concerned with the quantitative homogenization of the steady Stokes equations with the Dirichlet condition in a periodically perforated domain. Using a compactness method, we establish the large-scale interior $C^{1, α}$ and Lipschitz estimates for the velocity as well as the corresponding estimates for the pressure. These estimates, when combined with the classical regularity estimates for the Stokes equations, yield the uniform Lipschitz estimates. As a consequence, we also obtain the uniform $W^{k, p}$ estimates for $1<p<\infty$.

Quasi-stationary distributions of multi-dimensional diffusion processes

The present paper is devoted to the investigation of the long term behavior of a class of singular multi-dimensional diffusion processes that get absorbed in finite time with probability one. Our focus is on the analysis of quasi-stationary distributions (QSDs), which describe the long term behavior of the system conditioned on not being absorbed. Under natural Lyapunov conditions, we construct a QSD and prove the sharp exponential convergence to this QSD for compactly supported initial distributions. Under stronger Lyapunov conditions ensuring that the diffusion process comes down from infinity, we show the uniqueness of a QSD and the exponential convergence to the QSD for all initial distributions. Our results can be seen as the multi-dimensional generalization of Cattiaux et al (Ann. Prob. 2009) as well as the complement to Hening and Nguyen (Ann. Appl. Prob. 2018) which looks at the long term behavior of multi-dimensional diffusions that can only become extinct asymptotically. The centerpiece of our approach concerns a uniformly elliptic operator that we relate to the generator, or the Fokker-Planck operator, associated to the diffusion process. This operator only has singular coefficients in its zeroth-order terms and can be handled more easily than the generator. For this operator, we establish the discreteness of its spectrum, its principal spectral theory, the stochastic representation of the semigroup generated by it, and the global regularity for the associated parabolic equation. We show how our results can be applied to most ecological models, among which cooperative, competitive, and predator-prey Lotka-Volterra systems.

Large-Scale Lipschitz Estimates for Elliptic Systems with Periodic High-Contrast Coefficients

This paper is concerned with the large-scale regularity in the homogenization of elliptic systems of elasticity with periodic high-contrast coefficients. We obtain the large-scale Lipschitz estimate that is uniform with respect to the contrast ratio $δ^2$ for $0<δ<\infty$. Our study also covers the case of soft inclusions ($δ=0$) as well as the case of stiff inclusions ($δ=\infty$). The large-scale Lipschitz estimate, together with classical local estimates, allows us to establish explicit bounds for the matrix of fundamental solutions and its derivatives.

Combined Effects of Homogenization and Singular Perturbations: Quantitative Estimates

We investigate quantitative estimates in periodic homogenization of second-order elliptic systems of elasticity with singular fourth-order perturbations. The convergence rates, which depend on the scale $κ$ that represents the strength of the singular perturbation and on the length scale $ε$ of the heterogeneities, are established. We also obtain the large-scale Lipschitz estimate, down to the scale $ε$ and independent of $κ$. This large-scale estimate, when combined with small-scale estimates, yields the classical Lipschitz estimate that is uniform in both $ε$ and $κ$.
