Weighted $L^2$ Estimates for Elliptic Homogenization in Lipschitz Domains

We develop a new real-variable method for weighted $L^p$ estimates. The method is applied to the study of weighted $W^{1, 2}$ estimates in Lipschitz domains for weak solutions of second-order elliptic systems in divergence form with bounded measurable coefficients. It produces a necessary and sufficient condition, which depends on the weight function, for the weighted $W^{1,2}$ estimate to hold in a fixed Lipschitz domain with a given weight. Using this condition, for elliptic systems in Lipschitz domains with rapidly oscillating, periodic and VMO coefficients, we reduce the problem of weighted estimates to the case of constant coefficients.

Quantitative Estimates in Reiterated Homogenization

This paper investigates quantitative estimates in the homogenization of second-order elliptic systems with periodic coefficients that oscillate on multiple separated scales. We establish large-scale interior and boundary Lipschitz estimates down to the finest microscopic scale via iteration and rescaling arguments. We also obtain a convergence rate in the $L^2$ space by the reiterated homogenization method.

Homogenization of Parabolic Equations with Non-self-similar Scales

This paper is concerned with quantitative homogenization of second-order parabolic systems with periodic coefficients varying rapidly in space and time, in different scales. We obtain large-scale interior and boundary Lipschitz estimates as well as interior $C^{1, α}$ and $C^{2, α}$ estimates by utilizing higher-order correctors. We also investigate the problem of convergence rates for initial-boundary value problems.

Nodal Sets and Doubling Conditions in Elliptic Homogenization

This paper is concerned with uniform measure estimates for nodal sets of solutions in elliptic homogenization. We consider a family of second-order elliptic operators $\{ \mathcal{L}_\e\}$ in divergence form with rapidly oscillating and periodic coefficients. We show that the $(d-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measures of the nodal sets of solutions to $\mathcal{L}_\e (u_\e)=0$ in a ball in $\R^d$ are bounded uniformly in $\e>0$. The proof relies on a uniform doubling condition and approximation of $u_\e$ by solutions of the homogenized equation.

Extrapolation for the $L^p$ Dirichlet Problem in Lipschitz domains

Let $\mathcal{L}$ be a second-order linear elliptic operator with complex coefficients. We show that if the $L^p$ Dirichlet problem for the elliptic system $\mathcal{L}(u)=0$ in a fixed Lipschitz domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is solvable for some $1<p=p_0< \frac{2(d-1)}{d-2}$, then it is solvable for all $p$ satisfying $$ p_0<p< \frac{2(d-1)}{d-2} +\varepsilon. $$ The proof is based on a real-variable argument. It only requires that local solutions of $\mathcal{L}(u)=0$ satisfy a boundary Cacciopoli inequality.

Lectures on Periodic Homogenization of Elliptic Systems

In recent years considerable advances have been made in quantitative homogenization of partial differential equations in the periodic and non-periodic settings. This monograph surveys the theory of quantitative homogenization for second-order linear elliptic systems in divergence form with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients, $$ \mathcal{L}_\e =-\text{\rm div} \big (A(x/\e)\nabla \big), $$ in a bounded domain $Ω$ in $\br^d$. It begins with a review of the classical qualitative homogenization theory, and addresses the problem of convergence rates of solutions. The main body of the monograph investigates various interior and boundary regularity estimates (Hölder, Lipschitz, $W^{1, p}$, nontangnetial-maximal-function) that are uniform in the small parameter $\e>0$. Additional topics include convergence rates for Dirichlet eigenvalues and asymptotic expansions of fundamental solutions, Green functions, and Neumann functions. Part of this monograph is based on lecture notes for courses the author taught at several summer schools and at the University of Kentucky. Much of material in Chapters 6 and 7 is taken from his joint papers \cite{KLS-2013, KLS-2014} with Carlos Kenig and Fang-Hua Lin, and from \cite{KS-2011-L} with Carlos Kenig.

Regularity of Homogenized Boundary Data in Periodic Homogenization of Elliptic Systems

This paper is concerned with periodic homogenization of second-order elliptic systems in divergence form with oscillating Dirichlet data or Neumann data of first order. We prove that the homogenized boundary data belong to $W^{1, p}$ for any $1<p<\infty$. In particular, this implies that the boundary layer tails are Hölder continuous of order $α$ for any $α\in (0,1)$.

Convergence Rates and Interior Estimates in Homogenization of Higher Order Elliptic Systems

This paper is concerned with the quantitative homogenization of $2m$-order elliptic systems with bounded measurable, rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. We establish the sharp $O(\varepsilon)$ convergence rate in $W^{m-1, p_0}$ with $p_0=\frac{2d}{d-1}$ in a bounded Lipschitz domain in $\mathbb{R}^d$ as well as the uniform large-scale interior $C^{m-1, 1}$ estimate. With additional smoothness assumptions, the uniform interior $C^{m-1, 1}$, $W^{m,p}$ and $C^{m-1, α}$ estimates are also obtained. As applications of the regularity estimates, we establish asymptotic expansions for fundamental solutions.

Nonlocal dispersal equations in time-periodic media: principal spectral theory, bifurcation and asymptotic behaviors

This paper is devoted to the investigation of the following nonlocal dispersal equation $$ u_{t}(t,x)=\frac{D}{σ^m}\left[\int_ΩJ_σ(x-y)u(t,y)dy-u(t,x)\right]+f(t,x,u(t,x)), \quad t>0,\quad x\in\overlineΩ, $$ where $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{N}$ is a bounded and connected domain with smooth boundary, $m\in[0,2)$, $D>0$ is the dispersal rate, $σ>0$ characterizes the dispersal range, $J_σ=\frac{1}{σ^{N}} J\left(\frac{\cdot}σ\right)$ is the scaled dispersal kernel, and $f$ is a time-periodic nonlinear function of generalized KPP type. We first study the principal spectral theory of the linear operator associated to the linearization of the equation at $u\equiv0$. We obtain an easily verifiable and general condition for the existence of the principal eigenvalue as well as important sup-inf characterizations for the principal eigenvalue. We next study the influence of the principal eigenvalue on the global dynamics and confirm the criticality of the principal eigenvalue being zero. It is then followed by the study of the effects of the dispersal rate $D$ and the dispersal range characterized by $σ$ on the principal eigenvalue and the positive time-periodic solution, and prove various asymptotic behaviors of the principal eigenvalue and the positive time-periodic solution when $D,σ\to0^{+}$ or $\infty$. Finally, we establish the maximum principle for time-periodic nonlocal operator.

Existence, uniqueness and stability of transition fronts of nonlocal equations in time heterogeneous bistable media

The present paper is devoted to the study of existence, uniqueness and stability of transition fronts of nonlocal dispersal evolution equations in time heterogeneous media of bistable type under the unbalanced condition. We first study space nonincreasing transition fronts and prove various important qualitative properties, including uniform steepness, stability, uniform stability and exponential decaying estimates. Then, we show that any transition front, after certain space shift, coincides with a space nonincreasing transition front (if it exists), which implies the uniqueness, up to space shifts, and monotonicity of transition fronts provided that a space nonincreasing transition front exists. Moreover, we show that a transition front must be a periodic traveling wave in periodic media and asymptotic speeds of transition fronts exist in uniquely ergodic media. Finally, we prove the existence of space nonincreasing transition fronts, whose proof does not need the unbalanced condition.

Boundary Layers in Periodic Homogenization of Neumann Problems

This paper is concerned with a family of second-order elliptic systems in divergence form with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. We initiate the study of homogenization and boundary layers for Neumann problems with first-order oscillating boundary data. We identify the homogenized system and establish the sharp rate of convergence in $L^2$ in dimension three or higher. Sharp regularity estimates are also obtained for the homogenized boundary data in both Dirichlet and Neumann problems. The results are used to obtain a higher-order convergence rate for Neumann problems with non-oscillating data.

Boundary Korn Inequality and Neumann Problems in Homogenization of Systems of Elasticity

This paper concerns with a family of elliptic systems of linear elasticity with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients, arising in the theory of homogenization. We establish uniform optimal regularity estimates for solutions of Neumann problems in a bounded Lipschitz domain with $L^2$ boundary data. The proof relies on a boundary Korn inequality for solutions of systems of linear elasticity and uses a large-scale Rellich estimate obtained in \cite{Shen-2016}.

Approximate Correctors and Convergence Rates in Almost-Periodic Homogenization

We carry out a comprehensive study of quantitative homogenization of second-order elliptic systems with bounded measurable coefficients that are almost-periodic in the sense of H. Weyl. We obtain uniform local $L^2$ estimates for the approximate correctors in terms of a function that quantifies the almost-periodicity of the coefficient matrix. We give a condition that implies the existence of (true) correctors. These estimates as well as similar estimates for the dual approximate correctors yield optimal or near optimal convergence rates in $H^1$ and $L^2$.The $L^2$-based Hölder and Lipschitz estimates at large scale are also established.

Transition Fronts in Time Heterogeneous and Random Media of Ignition Type

The current paper is devoted to the investigation of wave propagation phenomenon in reaction-diffusion equations with ignition type nonlinearity in time heterogeneous and random media. It is proven that such equations in time heterogeneous media admit transition fronts or generalized traveling wave solutions with time dependent profiles and that such equations in time random media admit generalized traveling wave solutions with random profiles. Important properties of generalized traveling wave solutions, including the boundedness of propagation speeds and the uniform decaying estimates of the propagation fronts, are also obtained.

Transition fronts in nonlocal Fisher-KPP equations in time heterogeneous media

The present paper is devoted to the study of transition fronts of nonlocal Fisher-KPP equations in time heterogeneous media. We first construct transition fronts with prescribed interface location functions, which are natural generalizations of front location functions in homogeneous media. It it shown that these transition fronts have exact decaying rates as the space variable tends to infinity. Then, by the general results on space regularity of transition fronts of nonlocal evolution equations proven in the authors' earlier work (\cite{ShSh14-4}), these transition fronts are continuously differentiable in space. We show that their space partial derivatives have exact decaying rates as the space variable tends to infinity. Finally, we study the asymptotic stability of transition fronts. It is shown that transition fronts attract those solutions whose initial data decays as fast as transition fronts near infinity and essentially above zero near negative infinity.
