Integrated Artificial Neural Network with Trainable Activation Function Enabled by Topological Insulator-based Spin-Orbit Torque Devices

Non-volatile memristors offer a salient platform for artificial neural network (ANN), but the integration of different function blocks into one hardware system remains challenging. Here we demonstrate the implementation of brain-like synaptic (SOT-S) and neuronal (SOT-N) functions in the Bi2Te3/CrTe2 heterostructure-based spin-orbit torque (SOT) device. The SOT-S unit exhibits highly linear (linearity error < 4.19%) and symmetrical long-term potentiation/depression process, resulting in better performance compared to other memristor synapses. Meanwhile, the Sigmoid-shape transition curve inherited in the SOT-N cell replaces the software-based activation function block, hence reducing the system complexity. On this basis, we employ a serial-connected, voltage-mode sensing ANN architecture to enhance the vector-matrix multiplication signal strength with low reading error of 0.61%. Furthermore, the trainable activation function of SOT-N enables the integrated SOT-ANN to execute the Batch Normalization algorithm and activation operation within one clock cycle, which bring about improved on/off-chip training performance close to the ideal baseline.

Online Learning Based Mobile Robot Controller Adaptation for Slip Reduction

Slip is a very common phenomena present in wheeled mobile robotic systems. It has undesirable consequences such as wasting energy and impeding system stability. To tackle the challenge of mobile robot trajectory tracking under slippery conditions, we propose a hierarchical framework that learns and adapts gains of the tracking controllers simultaneously online. Concretely, a reinforcement learning (RL) module is used to auto-tune parameters in a lateral predictive controller and a longitudinal speed PID controller. Experiments show the necessity of simultaneous gain tuning, and have demonstrated that our online framework outperforms the best baseline controller using fixed gains. By utilizing online gain adaptation, our framework achieves robust tracking performance by rejecting slip and reducing tracking errors when the mobile robot travels through various terrains.

Diffusion-Dominated Pinch-Off of Ultralow Surface Tension Fluids

We study the breakup of a liquid thread inside another liquid at different surface tensions. In general, the pinch-off of a liquid thread is governed by the dynamics of fluid flow. However, when the interfacial tension is ultralow (2 to 3 orders lower than normal liquids), we find that the pinch-off dynamics can be governed by bulk diffusion. By studying the velocity and the profile of the pinch-off, we explain why the diffusion-dominated pinch-off takes over the conventional breakup at ultralow surface tensions.

Non-invasive color imaging through scattering medium under broadband illumination

Due to the complex of mixed spectral point spread function within memory effect range, it is unreliable and slow to use speckle correlation technology for non-invasive imaging through scattering medium under broadband illumination. The contrast of the speckles will drastically drop as the light source's spectrum width increases. Here, we propose a method for producing the optical transfer function with several speckle frames within memory effect range to image under broadband illumination. The method can be applied to image amplitude and color objects under white LED illumination. Compared to other approaches of imaging under broadband illumination, such as deep learning and modified phase retrieval, our method can provide more stable results with faster convergence speed, which can be applied in high speed scattering imaging under natural light illumination.

A Topological Directional Coupler Fed by Microstrip Line with Configurable Coupling Coefficient

Topological waveguides have been extensively studied for their robust transmission properties immune to defects and their application potentials for microwave and terahertz integrated circuits. In this work, by using grounded planar valley-Hall photonic topological insulators, a high-efficiency topological directional coupler fed directly by microstrip line with configurable coupling coefficient is theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The topological directional coupler consists of two coupled topological waveguides, which can be directly integrated with microstrip circuits. Different coupling coefficients were achieved by configuring the coupling between the two topological waveguides. Both simulation and measurement demonstrated the proposed designs. In addition, the proposed design is applicable in both microwave and terahertz bands.

Delta interferometer: A polarization sensitive interferometer

A new type of polarization sensitive interferometer is proposed, which is named as Delta interferometer due to the geometry of the simplest interferometer looks like Greek letter, Delta. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that this type of interferometer is proposed. The main difference between Delta interferometer and other existed interferometer, such as Michelson interferometer, Mach-Zehnder interferometer, Young\rq{}s double-slit interferometer, is that the two interfering paths are asymmetrical in Delta interferometer, which makes it polarization sensitive. The visibility of the first-order interference pattern observed in Delta interferometer is dependent on the polarization of the incidental light. Optical coherence theory is employed to interpret the phenomenon and a single-mode continuous-wave laser is employed to verify the theoretical predictions. The theoretical and experimental results are consistent. Delta interferometer provides a perfect tool to study the reflection of electric field in different polarizations and may find applications in polarization sensitive scenarios.

Collaborative Knowledge Graph Fusion by Exploiting the Open Corpus

To alleviate the challenges of building Knowledge Graphs (KG) from scratch, a more general task is to enrich a KG using triples from an open corpus, where the obtained triples contain noisy entities and relations. It is challenging to enrich a KG with newly harvested triples while maintaining the quality of the knowledge representation. This paper proposes a system to refine a KG using information harvested from an additional corpus. To this end, we formulate our task as two coupled sub-tasks, namely join event extraction (JEE) and knowledge graph fusion (KGF). We then propose a Collaborative Knowledge Graph Fusion Framework to allow our sub-tasks to mutually assist one another in an alternating manner. More concretely, the explorer carries out the JEE supervised by both the ground-truth annotation and an existing KG provided by the supervisor. The supervisor then evaluates the triples extracted by the explorer and enriches the KG with those that are highly ranked. To implement this evaluation, we further propose a Translated Relation Alignment Scoring Mechanism to align and translate the extracted triples to the prior KG. Experiments verify that this collaboration can both improve the performance of the JEE and the KGF.

Grouptron: Dynamic Multi-Scale Graph Convolutional Networks for Group-Aware Dense Crowd Trajectory Forecasting

Accurate, long-term forecasting of pedestrian trajectories in highly dynamic and interactive scenes is a long-standing challenge. Recent advances in using data-driven approaches have achieved significant improvements in terms of prediction accuracy. However, the lack of group-aware analysis has limited the performance of forecasting models. This is especially nonnegligible in highly crowded scenes, where pedestrians are moving in groups and the interactions between groups are extremely complex and dynamic. In this paper, we present Grouptron, a multi-scale dynamic forecasting framework that leverages pedestrian group detection and utilizes individual-level, group-level and scene-level information for better understanding and representation of the scenes. Our approach employs spatio-temporal clustering algorithms to identify pedestrian groups, creates spatio-temporal graphs at the individual, group, and scene levels. It then uses graph neural networks to encode dynamics at different scales and aggregate the embeddings for trajectory prediction. We conducted extensive comparisons and ablation experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. Our method achieves 9.3% decrease in final displacement error (FDE) compared with state-of-the-art methods on ETH/UCY benchmark datasets, and 16.1% decrease in FDE in more crowded scenes where extensive human group interactions are more frequently present.

Writing Style Aware Document-level Event Extraction

Event extraction, the technology that aims to automatically get the structural information from documents, has attracted more and more attention in many fields. Most existing works discuss this issue with the token-level multi-label classification framework by distinguishing the tokens as different roles while ignoring the writing styles of documents. The writing style is a special way of content organizing for documents and it is relative fixed in documents with a special field (e.g. financial, medical documents, etc.). We argue that the writing style contains important clues for judging the roles for tokens and the ignorance of such patterns might lead to the performance degradation for the existing works. To this end, we model the writing style in documents as a distribution of argument roles, i.e., Role-Rank Distribution, and propose an event extraction model with the Role-Rank Distribution based Supervision Mechanism to capture this pattern through the supervised training process of an event extraction task. We compare our model with state-of-the-art methods on several real-world datasets. The empirical results show that our approach outperforms other alternatives with the captured patterns. This verifies the writing style contains valuable information that could improve the performance of the event extraction task.

Nth-order nonlinear intensity fluctuation amplifier

Stronger light intensity fluctuations are pursued by related applications such as optical resolution, image enhancement, and beam positioning. In this paper, an Nth-order light intensity fluctuation amplifier is proposed, which was demonstrated by a four-wave mixing process with different statistical distribution coupling lights. Firstly, its amplification mechanism is revealed both theoretically and experimentally. The ratio $R$ of statistical distributions and the degree of second-order coherence ${g^{(2)}}(0)$ of beams are used to characterize the affected modulations and the increased light intensity fluctuations through the four-wave mixing process. The results show that the amplification of light intensity fluctuations is caused by not only the fluctuating light fields of incident coupling beams, but also the fluctuating nonlinear coefficient of interaction. At last, we highlight the potentiality of applying such amplifier to other N-order nonlinear optical effects.

Ghost Imaging Based on Recurrent Neural Network

Benefit from the promising features of second-order correlation, ghost imaging (GI) has received extensive attentions in recent years. Simultaneously, GI is affected by the poor trade-off between sampling rate and imaging quality. The traditional image reconstruction method in GI is to accumulate the action result of each speckle and the corresponding bucket signal. We found that the image reconstruction process of GI is very similar to the Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), which is one of the deep learning algorithm. In this paper, we proposed a novel method that effectively implements GI on the RNN architecture, called GI-RNN. The state of each layer in RNN is determined by the output of the previous layer and the input of this layer, and the output of the network is the sum of all previous states. Therefore, we take the speckle of each illumination and the corresponding bucket signal as the input of each layer, and the output of the network is the sum of all previous speckle and bucket signal, which is the image of the target. The testing results show that the proposed method can achieve image reconstruction at a very low sampling rate (0.38$\%$). Moreover, we compare GI-RNN with traditional GI algorithm and compressed sensing algorithm. The results of different targets show that GI-RNN is 6.61 dB higher than compressed sensing algorithm and 12.58 dB higher than traditional GI algorithm on average. In our view, the proposed method makes an important step to applications of GI.

Generative-Adversarial-Networks-based Ghost Recognition

Nowadays, target recognition technique plays an important role in many fields. However, the current target image information based methods suffer from the influence of image quality and the time cost of image reconstruction. In this paper, we propose a novel imaging-free target recognition method combining ghost imaging (GI) and generative adversarial networks (GAN). Based on the mechanism of GI, a set of random speckles sequence is employed to illuminate target, and a bucket detector without resolution is utilized to receive echo signal. The bucket signal sequence formed after continuous detections is constructed into a bucket signal array, which is regarded as the sample of GAN. Then, conditional GAN is used to map bucket signal array and target category. In practical application, the speckles sequence in training step is employed to illuminate target, and the bucket signal array is input GAN for recognition. The proposed method can improve the problems caused by conventional recognition methods that based on target image information, and provide a certain turbulence-free ability. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method achieves promising performance.

Observing two-photon subwavelength interference of broadband chaotic light in polarization-selective Michelson interferometer

Differing from the traditional method of achieving subwavelength interference, we have demonstrated the two-photon subwavelength interference effect of broadband chaotic light in a polarization-selective Michelson interferometer with an ultrafast two-photon absorption detector the first time, which is achieved by manipulating two-photon probability amplitudes involved in the interference. In theory, the two-photon polarization coherence matrix and probability amplitudes matrix are combined to develop polarized two-photon interference terms, which explains the experimental results well. In order to make better use of this interferometer to produce the subwavelength effect, we also make a series of error analyses to find out the relationship between the visibility and the degree of polarization error. Our experimental and theoretical results are helpful to understand the two-photon subwavelength interference, which sheds light on the development of the two-photon interference theory of vector light field based on quantum mechanics. These experimental results may help to develop future optical interferometry, optical polarimetry, and subwavelength lithography.

RetinaGAN: An Object-aware Approach to Sim-to-Real Transfer

The success of deep reinforcement learning (RL) and imitation learning (IL) in vision-based robotic manipulation typically hinges on the expense of large scale data collection. With simulation, data to train a policy can be collected efficiently at scale, but the visual gap between sim and real makes deployment in the real world difficult. We introduce RetinaGAN, a generative adversarial network (GAN) approach to adapt simulated images to realistic ones with object-detection consistency. RetinaGAN is trained in an unsupervised manner without task loss dependencies, and preserves general object structure and texture in adapted images. We evaluate our method on three real world tasks: grasping, pushing, and door opening. RetinaGAN improves upon the performance of prior sim-to-real methods for RL-based object instance grasping and continues to be effective even in the limited data regime. When applied to a pushing task in a similar visual domain, RetinaGAN demonstrates transfer with no additional real data requirements. We also show our method bridges the visual gap for a novel door opening task using imitation learning in a new visual domain. Visit the project website at https://retinagan.github.io/

Photon statistics of superbunching pseudothermal light

Superbunching pseudothermal light has important applications in studying the second- and higher-order interference of light in quantum optics. Unlike the photon statistics of thermal or pseudothermal light is well understood, the photon statistics of superbunching pseudothermal light has not been studied yet. In this paper, we will employ single-photon detectors to measure the photon statistics of superbunching pseudothermal light and calculate the degree of second-order coherence. It is found that the larger the value of the degree of second-order coherence of superbunching pseudothermal light is, the more the measured photon distribution deviates from the one of thermal or pseudothermal light in the tail part. The results are helpful to understand the physics of two-photon superbunching with classical light. It is suggested that superbunching pseudothermal light can be employed to generate non-Rayleigh temporal speckles.

Speckles-Training-Based Denoising Convolutional Neural Network Ghost Imaging

Ghost imaging (GI) has been paid attention gradually because of its lens-less imaging capability, turbulence-free imaging and high detection sensitivity. However, low image quality and slow imaging speed restrict the application process of GI. In this paper, we propose a improved GI method based on Denoising Convolutional Neural Networks (DnCNN). Inspired by the corresponding between input (noisy image) and output (residual image) in DnCNN, we construct the mapping between speckles sequence and the corresponding noise distribution in GI through training. Then, the same speckles sequence is employed to illuminate unknown targets, and a de-noising target image will be obtained. The proposed method can be regarded as a general method for GI. Under two sampling rates, extensive experiments are carried out to compare with traditional GI method (basic correlation and compressed sensing) and DnCNN method on three data sets. Moreover, we set up a physical GI experiment system to verify the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method achieves promising performance.

Temporal and spatial superbunching effects from apair of modulated distinguishable classical light

From the Feynman path integration theory of view, the Hanbury Brown--Twiss effect would not be observed for one definite two-photon propagation path, as well as the superbunching effect. Here, temporal and spatial superbunching effects are measured from a pair of modulated distinguishable classical light. These interesting phenomena are realized by passing two orthogonal polarized laser beams through two rotating ground glass plates in sequence. To understand the underlying physical process, the intensity fluctuation correlation theory is developed to describe the superbunching effect in the temporal and spatial domain, which agrees with experimental results well. Such experimental results are conducive to the study of superbunching effect which plays an important role in improving the performance in related applications, such as the contrast of ghost imaging.
