In-medium $\mbox{NN}\to \mbox{N}Δ$ cross section and its dependence on effective Lagrange parameters in isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter

The in-medium $NN\rightarrow NΔ$ cross section and its differential cross section in isospin asymmetric nuclear medium are investigated in the framework of the one-boson exchange model by including the isovector mesons, i.e., $δ$ and $ρ$ mesons. Our results show that the in-medium $NN\rightarrow NΔ$ cross sections are suppressed with density increasing, and the differential cross sections become isotropic with the density increasing at the beam energy around the $Δ$ threshold energy. The isospin splitting on the medium correction factor, $R=σ_{ NN\rightarrow NΔ}^*/σ_{NN\rightarrow NΔ}^{\text{free}}$ is observed for different channels of $NN\to NΔ$, especially around the threshold energy for all the effective Lagrangian parameters. By analyzing the selected effective Lagrangian parameters, our results show that the larger effective mass is, the weaker medium correction $R$ is.

Effect of energy conservation on in-medium $\mbox{NN}\to \mbox{N}Δ$ cross section in isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter

In this paper, the in-medium $NN\rightarrow NΔ$ cross section is calculated in the framework of the one-boson exchange model by including the isovector mesons, i.e. $δ$ and $ρ$ mesons. Due to the isospin exchange in the $NN\rightarrow NΔ$ process, the vector self-energies of the outgoing particles are modified relative to the incoming particles in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter, and it leads to the effective energies of the incoming $NN$ pair being different from the outgoing $NΔ$ pair. This effect is investigated in the calculation of the in-medium $NN\rightarrow NΔ$ cross section. With the corrected energy conservation, the cross sections of the $Δ^{++}$ and $Δ^+$ channels are suppressed, and the cross sections of the $Δ^0$ and $Δ^-$ channels are enhanced relative to the results obtained without properly considering the potential energy changes. Our results further confirm the dependence of medium correction factor, $R=σ_{ NN\rightarrow NΔ}^*/σ_{NN\rightarrow NΔ}^{\text{free}}$, on the charge state of $NN\rightarrow NΔ$ especially around the threshold energy, but the isospin splitting of medium correction factor $R$ becomes weak at high beam energies.

Impact parameter smearing effects on isospin sensitive observables in heavy ion collisions

The validity of impact parameter estimation from the multiplicity of charged particles at low-intermediate energies is checked within the framework of ImQMD model. The simulations show that the multiplicity of charged particles cannot estimate the impact parameter of heavy ion collisions very well, especially for central collisions at the beam energies lower than $\sim$70 MeV/u due to the large fluctuations of the multiplicity of charged particles. The simulation results for the central collisions defined by the charged particle multiplicity are compared to those by using impact parameter b=2 fm and it shows that the charge distribution for $^{112}$Sn +$^{112}$Sn at 50 MeV/u is different evidently for two cases; and the chosen isospin sensitive observable, the coalescence invariant single neutron to proton yield ratio, reduces less than 15\% for neutron-rich systems $^{124,132}$Sn +$^{124}$Sn at $E_{beam}$=50 MeV/u, while the coalescence invariant double neutron to proton yield ratio does not have obvious difference. The sensitivity of the chosen isospin sensitive observables to effective mass splitting is studied for central collisions defined by the multiplicity of charged particles. Our results show that the sensitivity is enhanced for $^{132}$Sn+$^{124}$Sn relative to that for $^{124}$Sn+$^{124}$Sn, and this reaction system should be measured in future experiments to study the effective mass splitting by heavy ion collisions.

The density- and isospin- dependent $Δ$-formation cross section and its decay width

The energy-, density-, and isospin-dependent $Δ$-formation cross section $σ_{Nπ\rightarrow Δ}^*$ and $Δ$-decay width are calculated based on the relativistic BUU approach in which the effective mass splitting of nucleon and $Δ$ baryons in isospin-asymmetric matter is considered by the inclusion of the $δ$ meson exchange in the effective Lagrangian density. With the density-dependent couplings for baryons of F. Hofmann et al., the $σ_{Nπ\rightarrow Δ}^*$ is decreased (increased) moderately with increasing density with (without) the consideration of the density dependent pion effective mass. Meanwhile, if the invariant mass of the system is not far from the $Δ$ pole mass, the $Δ$-decay width is also weakly dependent on density. The mass splitting effect of differently charged nucleon and $Δ$ baryons on $σ_{Nπ\rightarrow Δ}^*$ are found to be more obvious than that of pion mesons but much weaker than the mass splitting in the hard $Δ$ production channel $NN\rightarrow NΔ$. Further, the largest mass-splitting influence is seen in the $π^-p\rightarrow Δ^0$ and $π^+n\rightarrow Δ^+$ channels but not in the production of $Δ^-$ and $Δ^{++}$ isobars.

The isospin dependent nucleon-nucleon inelastic cross section in the nuclear medium

The calculation of the energy-, density-, and isospin-dependent $Δ$ production cross sections in nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering $σ^*_{NN\rightarrow NΔ}$ has been performed within the framework of the relativistic BUU approach. The N$Δ$ cross sections are calculated in Born approximation taking into account the effective mass splitting of the nucleons and $Δ$s in asymmetric matter. Due to the different mass splitting for neutron, proton and differently charged $Δ$s, it is shown that, similar to the NN elastic ones, the reductions of N$Δ$ inelastic cross sections in isospin-asymmetric nuclear medium are different from each other for all the individual channels and the effect is largest and of opposite sign for the $Δ^{++}$ and $Δ^{-}$ states. This approach is also compared to calculations without effective mass splitting and with splitting derived from Dirac-Brueckerner (DB) calculations. The isospin dependence of the N$Δ$ cross sections is expected to influence the production of $π^+$ and $π^-$ mesons as well as their yield ratio, and thus affect the use of the latter quantity as a probe of the stiffness of the symmetry energy at supranormal densities.

Influence of differential elastic nucleon-nucleon cross section on stopping and collective flows in heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies

By considering three different Nucleon-Nucleon (NN) elastic differential cross sections: the Cugnon \emph{et al.} parameterized differential cross section [Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res., Sect. \textbf{B111}, 215 (1996)], and the differential cross section derived from the collision term of the self-consistent relativistic Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation proposed by Mao \emph{et al.} [Z.\ Phys.\ A {\bf 347}, 173 (1994)], as well as the isotropic differential cross section, within the newly updated version of the ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics (UrQMD) model, the influence of the differential elastic NN cross section on various observables (e.g., nuclear stopping, both the rapidity and transverse-velocity dependence of the directed and elliptic flows) in Au+Au collisions at beam energies 150, 250, 400, and 800 MeV$/$nucleon is investigated. By comparing calculations with those three differential cross sections, it is found that the nuclear stopping power, the directed and elliptic flows are affected to some extent by the differential cross sections, and the impact of differential cross section on those observables becomes more visible as the beam energy increases. The effect on the elliptic flow difference $v_{2}^{n}$-$v_{2}^{H}$ and ratio $v_{2}^{n}$/$v_{2}^{H}$ of neutrons versus hydrogen isotopes ($Z=1$), which have been used as sensitive observables for probing nuclear symmetry energy at high densities, is weak.

The production of unknown neutron-rich isotopes in $^{238}$U+$^{238}$U collisions at near-barrier energy

The production cross sections for primary and residual fragments with charge number from $Z$=70 to 120 produced in the collision of $^{238}$U+$^{238}$U at 7.0 MeV/nucleon are calculated by the improved quantum molecular dynamics (ImQMD) model incorporated with the statistical evaporation model (HIVAP code). The calculation results predict that about sixty unknown neutron-rich isotopes from element Ra ($Z$=88) to Db ($Z$=105) can be produced with the production cross sections above the lower bound of $10^{-8}$ mb in this reaction. And almost all of unknown neutron-rich isotopes are emitted at the laboratory angles $θ_{lab}\leq$ 60$^\circ$. Two cases, i.e. the production of the unknown uranium isotopes with $A\geq$ 244 and that of rutherfordium with $A\geq$ 269 are investigated for understanding the production mechanism of unknown neutron-rich isotopes. It is found that for the former case the collision time between two uranium nuclei is shorter and the primary fragments producing the residues have smaller excitation energies of $\leq$ 30 MeV and the outgoing angles of those residues cover a range of 30$^\circ$-60$^\circ$. For the later case, the longer collision time is needed for a large number of nucleons being transferred and thus it results in the higher excitation energies and smaller outgoing angles of primary fragments, and eventually results in a very small production cross section for the residues of Rf with $A\geq$ 269 which have a small interval of outgoing angles of $θ_{lab}$=40$^\circ$-50$^\circ$.

Correlations between the fragmentation modes and light charged particles emission in heavy ion collisions

The correlations between the shape of rapidity distribution of the yield of light charged particles and the fragmentation modes in semi-peripheral collisions for $^{70}$Zn+$^{70}$Zn, $^{64}$Zn+$^{64}$Zn and $^{64}$Ni+$^{64}$Ni at the beam energy of 35MeV/nucleon are investigated based on ImQMD05 code. Our studies show there is an interplay between the binary, ternary and multi-fragmentation break-up modes. The binary and ternary break-up modes more prefer to emit light charged particles at middle rapidity and give larger values of $R_{yield}^{mid}$ compared with the multi-fragmentation break-up mode does. The reduced rapidity distribution for the normalized yields of p, d, t, $^3$He, $^4$He and $^6$He and the corresponding values of $R_{yield}^{mid}$ can be used to estimate the probability of multi-fragmentation break-up modes. By comparing to experimental data, our results illustrate that $\ge$40\% of the collisions events belong to the multi-fragmentation break-up mode for the reactions we studied.

Fusion and quasi-fission dynamics in nearly-symmetric reactions

Some nearly-symmetric fusion reactions are systematically investigated with the improved quantum molecular dynamics (ImQMD) model. By introducing two-body inelastic scattering in the Fermi constraint procedure, the stability of an individual nucleus and the description of fusion cross sections at energies near the Coulomb barrier can be further improved. Simultaneously, the quasi-fission process in $^{154}$Sm+$^{160}$Gd is also investigated with the microscopic dynamics model for the first time. We find that at energies above the Bass barrier, the fusion probability is smaller than $10^{-5}$ for this reaction, and the nuclear contact-time is generally smaller than $1500$ fm/c. From the central collisions of Sm+Gd, the neutron-rich fragments such as $^{164,165}$Gd, $^{192}$W can be produced in the ImQMD simulations, which implies that the quasi-fission reaction could be an alternative way to synthesize new neutron-rich heavy nuclei.

Covariance Analysis of Symmetry Energy Observables from Heavy Ion Collision

Using covariance analysis, we quantify the correlations between the interaction parameters in a transport model and the observables commonly used to extract information of the Equation of State of Asymmetric Nuclear Matter in experiments. By simulating $^{124}$Sn+$^{124}$Sn, $^{124}$Sn+$^{112}$Sn and $^{112}$Sn+$^{112}$Sn reactions at beam energies of 50 and 120 MeV per nucleon, we have identified that the nucleon effective mass splitting are most strongly correlated to the neutrons and protons yield ratios with high kinetic energy from central collisions especially at high incident energy. The best observable to determine the slope of the symmetry energy, L, at saturation density is the isospin diffusion observable even though the correlation is not very strong ($\sim$0.7). Similar magnitude of correlation but opposite in sign exists for isospin diffusion and nucleon isoscalar effective mass. At 120 MeV/u, the effective mass splitting and the isoscalar effective mass also have opposite correlation for the double n/p and isoscaling p/p yield ratios. By combining data and simulations at different beam energies, it should be possible to place constraints on the slope of symmetry energy (L) and effective mass splitting with reasonable uncertainties.

Competition between Coulomb and Symmetry Potential in Semi-peripheral Heavy-ion Collisions

The anisotropy of angular distributions of emitted nucleons and light charged particles for the asymmetric reaction system, $^{40}$Ar+$^{197}$Au, at b=6fm and $E_{beam}$=35, 50 and 100MeV/u, are investigated by using the Improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics model. The competition between the symmetry potential and Coulomb potential shows large impacts on the nucleons and light charged particles emission in projectile and target region. As a result of this competition, the angular distribution anisotropy of coalescence invariant Y(n)/Y(p) ratio at forward regions shows sensitivity to the stiffness of symmetry energy as well as the value of Y(n)/Y(p). This observable can be further checked against experimental data to understand the reaction mechanism and to extract information about the symmetry energy at subsaturation densities.

Systematic study of 16O-induced fusions with the improved quantum molecular dynamics model

The heavy-ion fusion reactions with 16O bombarding on 62Ni, 65Cu, 74Ge, 148Nd, 180Hf, 186W, 208Pb, 238U are systematically investigated with the improved quantum molecular dynamics (ImQMD) model. The fusion cross sections at energies near and above the Coulomb barriers can be reasonably well reproduced by using this semi-classical microscopic transport model with the parameter sets SkP* and IQ3a. The dynamical nucleus-nucleus potentials and the influence of Fermi constraint on the fusion process are also studied simultaneously. In addition to the mean field, the Fermi constraint also plays a key role for the reliable description of fusion process and for improving the stability of fragments in heavy-ion collisions.

Microscopic dynamics simulations of heavy-ion fusion reactions induced by neutron-rich nuclei

The heavy-ion fusion reactions induced by neutron-rich nuclei are investigated with the improved quantum molecular dynamics (ImQMD) model. With a subtle consideration of the neutron skin thickness of nuclei and the symmetry potential, the stability of nuclei and the fusion excitation functions of heavy-ion fusion reactions $^{16}$O+$^{76}$Ge, $^{16}$O+$^{154}$Sm, $^{40}$Ca+$^{96}$Zr and $^{132}$Sn+$^{40}$Ca are systematically studied. The fusion cross sections of these reactions at energies around the Coulomb barrier can be well reproduced by using the ImQMD model. The corresponding slope parameter of the symmetry energy adopted in the calculations is $L \approx 78$ MeV and the surface energy coefficient is $g_{\rm sur}=18\pm 1.5$ MeVfm$^2$. In addition, it is found that the surface-symmetry term significantly influences the fusion cross sections of neutron-rich fusion systems. For sub-barrier fusion, the dynamical fluctuations in the densities of the reaction partners and the enhanced surface diffuseness at neck side result in the lowering of the fusion barrier.

Collective flows of light particles in the Au+Au collision at intermediate energies

The Skyrme potential energy density functional is introduced into the Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model and the updated version is applied to studying the directed and elliptic flows of light particles (protons, neutrons, deuterons, tritons, $^3$He and $^4$He) in $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au collisions at beam energies 150, 250 and 400 MeV/nucleon. The results are compared with the recent FOPI experimental data. It is found that the yields and collective flows of light particles can be described quite well. The influence of the equation of state (EoS), medium-modified nucleon-nucleon elastic cross sections (NNECS) and cluster recognition criteria on the directed and elliptic flows is studied in detail. It is found that the flows of light particles are sensitive to the medium-modified NNECS, but not sensitive to the isospin dependent cluster recognition criteria. It seems difficult, however, even with the new data and calculations, to obtain a more accurate constraint on the nuclear incompressibility $K_0$ than the interval 200-260 MeV.

Constraints on symmetry energy and nucleon effective mass splitting with Heavy Ion Collisions

A new version of the improved quantum molecular dynamics model has been developed to include standard Skyrme interactions. Four commonly used Skyrme parameter sets, SLy4, SkI2, SkM* and Gs are adopted in the transport model code to calculate the isospin diffusion observables as well as single and double ratios of transverse emitted nucleons. While isospin diffusion observables are sensitive to the symmetry energy term, they are not very sensitive to the nucleon effective mass splitting parameters in the interactions. Our calculations show that the high energy neutrons and protons and their ratios from reactions at different incident energies provide a robust observable to study the momentum dependence of the nucleon effective mass splitting. However the sensitivity of effective mass splitting effect on the n/p yield ratios decreases with increasing beam energy, even though high energy proton and neutron are produced more abundantly at high beam energy. Our calculations show that the optimum incident energy to study nucleon effective masses is between 100-200 MeV per nucleon.

Sensitive dependence of isotope and isobar distribution of limiting temperatures on symmetry energy

The mass, isotope, and isobar distributions of limiting temperatures for finite nuclei are investigated by using a thermodynamics approach together with the Skyrme energy density functional. The relationship between the width of the isotope (isobar) distribution of limiting temperatures and the stiffness of the density dependence of the symmetry energy clearly is observed. The nuclear symmetry energy with smaller slope parameter $L_{\rm{sym}}$ causes a wider the isotope (isobar) distribution of limiting temperatures. The widths of the isotope (isobar) distributions of limiting temperatures could be useful observables for exploring the information of the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy at finite temperatures.

Probing the symmetry energy with isospin ratio from nucleons to fragments

Within the framework of ImQMD05, we study several isospin sensitive observables, such as DR(n/p) ratios, isospin transport ratio (isospin diffusion), yield ratios for LCPs between the projectile region and mid-rapidity region for the reaction systems Ni+Ni, Zn+Zn, Sn+Sn at low-intermediate energies. Our results show that those observables are sensitive to the density dependence of symmetry energy, and also depend on the cluster formation mechanism. By comparing these calculations to the data, the information of the symmetry energy and reaction mechanism is obtained.

Effect of isospin dependent cluster recognition on the observables in heavy ion collisions

We introduce isospin dependence in the cluster recognition algorithms used in the Quantum Molecular Dynamics model to describe fragment formation in heavy ion collisions. This change reduces the yields of emitted nucleons and enhances the yields of fragments, especially heavier fragments. The enhancement of neutron-rich lighter fragments mainly occurs at mid-rapidity. Consequently, isospin dependent observables, such as isotope distributions, yield ratios of $n/p$, $t/^3He$, and isoscaling parameters are affected. We also investigate how equilibration in heavy ion collisions is affected by this change.
