The Influence of in-medium NN cross-sections, symmetry potential and impact parameter on the isospin observables

We explore the influence of in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross section, symmetry potential and impact parameter on isospin sensitive observables in intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions with the ImQMD05 code, a modified version of Quantum Molecular Dynamics model. At incident velocities above the Fermi velocity, we find that the density dependence of symmetry potential plays a more important role on the double neutron to proton ratio $DR(n/p)$ and the isospin transport ratio $R_i$ than the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections, provided that the latter are constrained to a fixed total NN collision rate. We also explore both $DR(n/p)$ and $R_i$ as a function of the impact parameter. Since the copious production of intermediate mass fragments is a distinguishing feature of intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions, we examine the isospin transport ratios constructed from different groups of fragments. We find that the values of the isospin transport ratios for projectile rapidity fragments with $Z\ge20$ are greater than those constructed from the entire projectile rapidity source. We believe experimental investigations of this phenomenon can be performed. These may provide significant tests of fragmentation time scales predicted by ImQMD calculations.

Non-equilibrium dynamics in heavy ion collisions at low SIS energies

The Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model, a microscopic transport model, is used to study the directed and elliptic collective flows and the nuclear stopping in Au+Au collisions at incident energies covered by INDRA and lower-energy FOPI experiments. It is seen clearly that these observables are sensitive to both, the potential terms (including iso-scalar and iso-vector parts as well as the momentum dependent term) in the equation of state (EoS) and the collision term (including the Pauli-blocking and the medium-modified nucleon-nucleon elastic cross section (NNECS)). The momentum modifications of both, the mean-field potentials and the density dependent NNECS, are found to be sensitive to the collectivity of heavy-ion collisions. At INDRA energies ($\le 150$~MeV/nucleon), the dynamic transport with a soft EoS with momentum dependence and with the momentum-modified density-dependent NNECS describes the directed flow exhibited by hydrogen isotopes ($Z=1$) emitted at mid-rapidity fairly well.

Effect of splitting of the neutron and proton effective mass on nuclear symmetry energy at finite temperature

We present the temperature and density dependence of symmetry energy for nuclear matter at finite temperature based on the approach of the thermodynamics with Skyrme energy density functional. We first classify the Skyrme interactions into 7 groups according to the range of neutron and proton effective mass in neutron matter limit(99.99 per cent neutron in the matter). We find that there is obvious correlation between the temperature dependence of the symmetry energy and the splitting of the neutron and proton effective mass. For some Skyrme interactions with $m^{*}_{n}>m^{*}_{p}$ and strong splitting of the neutron and proton effective mass in asymmetric nuclear matter, a transition of the temperature dependence of symmetry energy from decreasing with temperature at low densities to increasing with temperature at high densities appears. For other Skyrme interactions, we do not observe such phenomenon. Our study show that the symmetry energy in hot asymmetric matter not only depends on symmetry potential part but also on the splitting of the neutron and proton effective mass to a certain extent.

Nuclear symmetry energy at subnormal densities from measured nuclear masses

The symmetry energy coefficients for nuclei with mass number A=20~250 are extracted from more than 2000 measured nuclear masses. With the semi-empirical connection between the symmetry energy coefficients of finite nuclei and the nuclear symmetry energy at reference densities, we investigate the density dependence of symmetry energy of nuclear matter at subnormal densities. The obtained results are compared with those extracted from other methods.

Production and rescattering of strange baryons at SPS energies in a transport model with hadron potentials

A mean-field potential version of the Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model is used to investigate the production of strange baryons, especially the $Λ$s and $\overlineΛ$s, from heavy ion collisions at SPS energies. It is found that, with the consideration of both formed and pre-formed hadron potentials in UrQMD, the transverse mass and longitudinal rapidity distributions of experimental data of both $Λ$s and $\overlineΛ$s can be quantitatively explained fairly well. Our investigation also shows that both the production mechanism and the rescattering process of hadrons play important roles in the final yield of strange baryons.

Constraint on nuclear symmetry energy from nuclear charge dependent neutron skin thickness of nuclei

An alternative way to constrain the density dependence of the symmetry energy with the slope of the neutron skin thickness of nuclei which shows a linear relation to both the isospin asymmetry and the nuclear charge with a form of Z^{2/3} is proposed. The linear dependence of the neutron skin thickness on the nuclear charge and isospin asymmetry is systematically studied with the data from antiprotonic atom measurement experimentally and the extended Thomas-Fermi approach incorporated the Skyrme energy density functional theoretically. An obviously linear relationship between the slope parameter L of the symmetry energy and the slope of the neutron skin thickness on the isospin asymmetry can be found by adopting 66 Skyrme interactions in the calculation. Combining the available experimental data, the constraint of 16<L<66 MeV on the slope parameter of the symmetry energy is obtained. The Skyrme interactions satisfying the constraint are selected.

Dynamical nucleus-nucleus potential at short distances

The dynamical nucleus-nucleus potentials for fusion reactions 40Ca+40Ca, 48Ca+208Pb and 126Sn+130Te are studied with the improved quantum molecular dynamics (ImQMD) model together with the extended Thomas-Fermi approximation for the kinetic energies of nuclei. The obtained fusion barrier for 40Ca+40Ca is in good agreement with the extracted fusion barrier from the measured fusion excitation function, and the depth of the fusion pockets are close to the results of time-dependent Hartree-Fock calculations. The energy dependence of fusion barrier is also investigated. For heavy fusion system, the fusion pocket becomes shallow and almost disappears for symmetric systems and the obtained potential at short distances is higher than the adiabatic potential.

Transport model study of nuclear stopping in heavy ion collisions over an energy range from 0.09A GeV to 160A GeV

Nuclear stopping in the heavy ion collisions over a beam energy range from SIS, AGS up to SPS is studied in the framework of the modified UrQMD transport model, in which mean field potentials of both formed and "pre-formed" hadrons (from string fragmentation) and medium modified nucleon-nucleon elastic cross sections are considered. It is found that the nuclear stopping is influenced by both the stiffness of the equation of state and the medium modifications of nucleon-nucleon cross sections at SIS energies. At the high SPS energies, the two-bump structure is shown in the experimental rapidity distribution of free protons, which can be understood with the consideration of the "pre-formed" hadron potentials.

Probing the density dependence of symmetry energy at subsaturation density with HICs

The reaction mechanism of the central collisions and peripheral collisions for $^{112,124}Sn+^{112,124}Sn$ at $E/A=50MeV$ is investigated within the framework of the Improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics model. The results show that multifragmentation process is an important mechanism at this energy region, and the influence of the cluster emission on the double n/p ratios and the isospin transport ratio are important. Furthermore, three observables, double n/p ratios, isospin diffusion and the rapidity distribution of the ratio $R_{7}$ for $^{112,124}Sn+^{112,124}Sn$ at E/A=50MeV are analyzed with the Improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics model. The results show that these three observables are sensitive to the density dependence of the symmetry energy. By comparing the calculation results to the data, the consistent constraint on the density dependence of the symmetry energy from these three observables is obtained.

The Study of Mass Distribution of products in 7.0 AMeV U238+U238 Collisions

Within the Improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics (ImQMD) Model incorporating the statistical decay Model, the reactions of U238+U238 at the energy of 7.0 AMeV have been studied. The charge, mass and excitation energy distributions of primary fragments are investigated within the ImQMD model and de-excitation processes of those primary fragments are described by the statistical decay model. The mass distribution of the final products in U238+U238 collisions is obtained and compared with the recent experimental data.

Mass parameters for relative and neck collective motions in heavy ion fusion reactions

Mass parameters for the relative and neck motions in fusion reactions of symmetric systems $^{90}$Zr+$^{90}$Zr, $^{110}$Pd+$^{110}$Pd, and $^{138}$Ba+$^{138}$Ba are studied by means of a microscopic transport model. The shape of the nuclear system is determined by an equi-density surface obtained from the density distribution of the system. The relative and neck motions are then studied and the mass parameters for these two motions are deduced. The mass parameter for the relative motion is around the reduced mass when the reaction partners are at the separated configuration and increases with decrease of the distance between two reaction partners after the touching configuration. The mass parameter for the neck motion first decreases slightly up to the touching configuration and then increases with the neck width, and its magnitude is from less than tenth to several times more than the total mass of the system. The mass parameters obtained from the microscopic transport model are larger than the ones obtained from the hydrodynamic model and smaller than those obtained from the linear response function theory. The mass parameters for both motions depend on the reaction systems, but the one for the relative motion depends on the incompressibility of the EoS more obviously than that for neck motion.

Constraints on the density dependence of the symmetry energy

Collisions involving 112Sn and 124Sn nuclei have been simulated with the improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics transport model. The results of the calculations reproduce isospin diffusion data from two different observables and the ratios of neutron and proton spectra. By comparing these data to calculations performed over a range of symmetry energies at saturation density and different representations of the density dependence of the symmetry energy, constraints on the density dependence of the symmetry energy at sub-normal density are obtained. Results from present work are compared to constraints put forward in other recent analysis.

In-medium NN cross sections determined from stopping and collective flow in intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions

In-medium nucleon-nucleon scattering cross sections are explored by comparing results of quantum molecular dynamics simulations to data on stopping and on elliptic and directed flow in intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions. The comparison points to in-medium cross sections which are suppressed at low energies but not at higher energies. Positive correlations are found between the degree of stopping and the magnitudes of elliptic and directed flows.

Applications of Skyrme energy-density functional to fusion reactions for synthesis of superheavy nuclei

The Skyrme energy-density functional approach has been extended to study the massive heavy-ion fusion reactions. Based on the potential barrier obtained and the parameterized barrier distribution the fusion (capture) excitation functions of a lot of heavy-ion fusion reactions are studied systematically. The average deviations of fusion cross sections at energies near and above the barriers from experimental data are less than 0.05 for 92% of 76 fusion reactions with $Z_1Z_2<1200$. For the massive fusion reactions, for example, the $^{238}$U-induced reactions and $^{48}$Ca+$^{208}$Pb the capture excitation functions have been reproduced remarkable well. The influence of structure effects in the reaction partners on the capture cross sections are studied with our parameterized barrier distribution. Through comparing the reactions induced by double-magic nucleus $^{48}$Ca and by $^{32}$S and $^{35}$Cl, the 'threshold-like' behavior in the capture excitation function for $^{48}$Ca induced reactions is explored and an optimal balance between the capture cross section and the excitation energy of the compound nucleus is studied. Finally, the fusion reactions with $^{36}$S, $^{37}$Cl, $^{48}$Ca and $^{50}$Ti bombarding on $^{248}$Cm, $^{247,249}$Bk, $^{250,252,254}$Cf and $^{252,254}$Es, and as well as the reactions lead to the same compound nucleus with Z=120 and N=182 are studied further. The calculation results for these reactions are useful for searching for the optimal fusion configuration and suitable incident energy in the synthesis of superheavy nuclei.

Elliptic flow and system size dependence of transition energies at intermediate energies

The elliptic flow for $Z\le2$ particles in heavy ion collisions at energies from several tens to several hundreds MeV per nucleon is investigated by means of transport model,i.e. a new version of the Improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics model (ImQMD05). In this model, a complete Skyrme potential energy density functional is employed. The influence of different effective interactions and medium corrections of nucleon-nucleon cross sections on the elliptic flow are studied. Our results show that a soft nuclear equation of state and incident energy dependent in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections are required for describing the excitation function of the elliptic flow at intermediate energies. The size dependence of transition energies for the elliptic flow at intermediate energies is also studied. The system size dependence of transition energies fits a power of system size with a exponent of 0.223.

Probing the symmetry energy and the degree of isospin equilibrium

The rapidity dependence of the single- and double- neutron to proton ratios of nucleon emission from isospin-asymmetric but mass-symmetric reactions Zr+Ru and Ru+Zr at energy range $100 \sim 800$ A MeV and impact parameter range $0\sim 8$ fm is investigated. The reaction system with isospin-asymmetry and mass-symmetry has the advantage of simultaneously showing up the dependence on the symmetry energy and the degree of the isospin equilibrium. We find that the beam energy- and the impact parameter dependence of the slope parameter of the double neutron to proton ratio ($F_D$) as function of rapidity are quite sensitive to the density dependence of symmetry energy, especially at energies $E_b\sim 400$ A MeV and reduced impact parameters around 0.5. Here the symmetry energy effect on the $F_D$ is enhanced, as compared to the single neutron to proton ratio. The degree of the equilibrium with respect to isospin (isospin mixing) in terms of the $F_D$ is addressed and its dependence on the symmetry energy is also discussed.

Applications of Skyrme energy-density functional to fusion reactions spanning the fusion barriers

The Skyrme energy density functional has been applied to the study of heavy-ion fusion reactions. The barriers for fusion reactions are calculated by the Skyrme energy density functional with proton and neutron density distributions determined by using restricted density variational (RDV) method within the same energy density functional together with semi-classical approach known as the extended semi-classical Thomas-Fermi method. Based on the fusion barrier obtained, we propose a parametrization of the empirical barrier distribution to take into account the multi-dimensional character of real barrier and then apply it to calculate the fusion excitation functions in terms of barrier penetration concept. A large number of measured fusion excitation functions spanning the fusion barriers can be reproduced well. The competition between suppression and enhancement effects on sub-barrier fusion caused by neutron-shell-closure and excess neutron effects is studied.

Medium modifications of the nucleon-nucleon elastic cross section in neutron-rich intermediate energy HICs

Several observables of unbound nucleons which are to some extent sensitive to the medium modifications of nucleon-nucleon elastic cross sections in neutron-rich intermediate energy heavy ion collisions are investigated. The splitting effect of neutron and proton effective masses on cross sections is discussed. It is found that the transverse flow as a function of rapidity, the $Q_{zz}$ as a function of momentum, and the ratio of halfwidths of the transverse to that of longitudinal rapidity distribution $R_{t/l}$ are very sensitive to the medium modifications of the cross sections. The transverse momentum distribution of correlation functions of two-nucleons does not yield information on the in-medium cross section.
