Probing the equation of state with pions

The influence of the isospin-independent, isospin- and momentum-dependent equation of state (EoS), as well as the Coulomb interaction on the pion production in intermediate energy heavy ion collisions (HICs) is studied for both isospin-symmetric and neutron-rich systems. The Coulomb interaction plays an important role in the reaction dynamics, and strongly influences the rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of charged pions. It even leads to the $π^-/π^+$ ratio deviating slightly from unity for isospin-{\it symmetric} systems. The Coulomb interaction between mesons and baryons is also crucial for reproducing the proper pion flow since it changes the behavior of the directed and the elliptic flow components of pions visibly. The EoS can be better investigated in neutron-rich system if {\it multiple} probes are measured simultaneously. For example, the rapidity and the transverse momentum distributions of the charged pions, the $π^-/π^+$ ratio, the various pion flow components, as well as the {\it difference} of $π^+$-$π^-$ flows. A new sensitive observable is proposed to probe the symmetry potential energy at high densities, namely the transverse momentum distribution of the elliptic flow difference [$Δv_2^{π^+ - π^-}(p_t^{\rm c.m.})$].

Probing the density dependence of the symmetry potential at low and high densities

We investigate the sensitivity of several observables to the density dependence of the symmetry potential within the microscopic transport model UrQMD (ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics model). The same systems are used to probe the symmetry potential at both low and high densities. The influence of the symmetry potentials on the yields of $π^{-}$, $π^{+}$, the $π^{-}/π^{+}$ ratio, the $n/p$ ratio of free nucleons and the $t/^3$He ratio are studied for neutron-rich heavy ion collisions ($^{208}Pb+^{208}Pb$, $^{132}Sn+^{124}Sn$, $^{96}Zr+^{96}Zr$) at $E_b=0.4A {\rm GeV}$. We find that these multiple probes provides comprehensive information on the density dependence of the symmetry potential.

Search for possible way of producing super-heavy elements-Dynamic study on damped reactions of 244Pu+244Pu,238$U+238$U and 197Au+197Au

By using the improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics model, the $^{244}$Pu+$^{244}$Pu, $^{238}$U+$^{238}$U and $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au reactions at the energy range of $E_{c.m.}$=800 $MeV$ to 2000 $MeV$ are studied. We find that the production probability of superheavy fragments(SHF) with $Z \geq$ 114 is much higher for $^{244}$Pu+$^{244}$Pu reaction compared with that of $^{238}$U+$^{238}$U reaction and no product of SHF is found for $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au. The production probability of SHF is narrowly peaked in incident energy dependence. The decay mechanism of the composite system of projectile and target and the time scale of decay process are explored. The binding energies of superheavy fragments are found to be broadly distributed and their shapes turn out to be exotic form.

Probing the density dependence of the symmetry potential with peripheral heavy-ion collisions

The peripheral heavy-ion collisions of $^{112, 124}Sn+ ^{86}Kr$ at $E_{b}= 25AMeV$ are studied by means of the Improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics Model(ImQMD). It is shown that the slope of the average N/Z ratio of emitted nucleons vs impact parameters for these reactions is very sensitive to the density dependence of the symmetry energy. Our study also shows that the yields of $^{3}H$ and $^{3}He$ decrease with impact parameters and slope of the yield of $^{3}H$ vs impact parameters as well as the ratio of Y($^{3}H$)/Y($^{3}He$) depend on the symmetry potential strongly for peripheral heavy-ion collisions.

Connection between the Largest Lyapunov Exponent, Density Fluctuation and Multifragmentation in Excited Nuclear Systems

Within a quantum molecular dynamics model we calculate the largest Lyapunov exponent (LLE), density fluctuation and mass distribution of fragments for a series of nuclear systems at different initial temperatures. It is found that the $LLE$ peaks at the temperature ("critical temperature") where the density fluctuation reaches a maximal value and the mass distribution of fragments is best fitted by the Fisher's power law from which the critical exponents for mass and charge distribution are obtained. The time-dependent behavior of the LLE and density fluctuation is studied. We find that the time scale of the density fluctuation is much longer than the inverse LLE, which indicates that the chaotic motion can be well developed during the process of fragment formation. The finite-size effect on "critical temperature" for nuclear systems ranging from Calcium to superheavy nuclei is also studied.

Further Development of the Improved QMD Model and its Applications to Fusion Reaction near Barrier

The Improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics model is further developed by introducing new parameters in interaction potential energy functional based on Skyrme interaction of SkM$^{*}$ and SLy series. The properties of ground states of selected nuclei can be reproduced very well. The Coulomb barriers for a series of reaction systems are studied and compared with the results of the proximity potential. The fusion excitation functions for a series of fusion reactions are calculated and the results are in good agreement with experimental data.

Mass and Isotope Dependence of Limiting Temperatures for Hot Nuclei

The mass and isotope dependence of limiting temperatures for hot nuclei are investigated. The predicted mass dependence of limiting temperatures is in good agreement with data derived from the caloric curve data. The predicted isotope distribution of limiting temperatures appears to be a parabolic shape and its centroid is not located at the isotope on the $β$-stability line(T=0) but at neutron-rich side. Our study shows that the mass and isotope dependence of limiting temperatures depend on the interaction and the form of surface tension and its isopin dependence sensitively.

Re-visit the N/Z ratio of free nucleons from collisions of neutron -rich nuclei as a probe of EoS of asymmetric nuclear matter

The N/Z ratio of free nucleons from collisions of neutron-rich nuclei as a function of their momentum is studied by means of Isospin dependent Quantum Molecular Dynamics. We find that this ratio is not only sensitive to the form of the density dependence of the symmetry potential energy but also its strength determined by the symmetry energy coefficient. The uncertainties about the symmetry energy coefficient influence the accuracy of probing the density dependence of the symmetry energy by means of the N/Z ratio of free nucleons of neutron-rich nuclei.

Density and temperature dependence of nucleon-nucleon elastic cross section

The in-medium neutron-proton, proton-proton (neutron-neutron) elastic scattering cross sections ($σ_{np}^{*}$, $σ_{pp(nn)}^{*}$) are studied based on the effective Lagrangian of density dependent relativistic hadron theory in which the $δ$[$a_0(980)$] meson is included. Our study shows that at low densities the $σ_{np}^*$ is about 3-4 times larger than $σ_{pp(nn)}^*$ and at densities higher than the normal density the isospin effect is almost washed out. Because of coupling to $δ$ meson the $σ_{nn}^*$ and $σ_{pp}^*$ are different in isospin asymmetric medium following the splitting of the proton and neutron mass. The isospin effect on the density dependence of the in-medium nucleon elastic cross section is dominantly contributed by the isovector $δ$ and $ρ$ mesons. The temperature effect on the $σ_{np}^*$ and $σ_{pp(nn)}^*$ is studied. It is shown that the temperature effect is weaker compared with the density effect but it becomes obvious as density increases.

Study of the neutron star structure in strong magnetic fields including the anomalous magnetic moments

We study the effects of strong magnetic fields on the neutron star structure. If the interior field of a star is on the same order of the surface field currently observed, the influences of the magnetic field on the star mass and radius are negligible. If one assumes that the internal magnetic field can be as large as that estimated from the scalar virial theorem, considerable effects can be induced. The maximum mass of stars is arisen substantially while the central density is largely suppressed. For two equal-mass stars the radius of the magnetic star can be larger by about 10% $\sim$ 20% than the nonmagnetic star.

Dynamic study on fusion reactions for $^{40,48}$Ca+$^{90,96}$Zr around Coulomb barrier

By using the updated improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics model in which a surface-symmetry potential term has been introduced for the first time, the excitation functions for fusion reactions of $^{40,48}$Ca+$^{90,96}$Zr at energies around the Coulomb barrier have been studied. The experimental data of the fusion cross sections for $^{40}$Ca+$^{90,96}$Zr have been reproduced remarkably well without introducing any new parameters. The fusion cross sections for the neutron-rich fusion reactions of $^{48}$Ca+$^{90,96}$Zr around the Coulomb barrier are predicted to be enhanced compared with a non-neutron-rich fusion reaction. In order to clarify the mechanism of the enhancement of the fusion cross sections for neutron-rich nuclear fusions, we pay a great attention to study the dynamic lowering of the Coulomb barrier during a neck formation. The isospin effect on the barrier lowering is investigated. It is interesting that the effect of the projectile and target nuclear structure on fusion dynamics can be revealed to a certain extent in our approach. The time evolution of the N/Z ratio at the neck region has been firstly illustrated. A large enhancement of the N/Z ratio at neck region for neutron-rich nuclear fusion reactions is found.

Isospin effect on nuclear stopping in intermediate energy Heavy Ion Collisions

By using the Isospin Dependent Quantum Molecular Dynamics Model (IQMD), we study the dependence of nuclear stopping Q_{ZZ}/A and R in intermediate energy heavy ion collisions on system size, initial N/Z, isospin symmetry potential and the medium correction of two-body cross sections. We find the effect of initial N/Z ratio, isospin symmetry potential on stopping is weak. The excitation function of Q_{ZZ}/A and R depends on the form of medium correction of two-body cross sections, the equation of state of nuclear matter (EOS). Our results show the behavior of the excitation function of Q_{ZZ}/A and R can provide clearer information of the isospin dependence of the medium correction of two-body cross sections.

The Isospin Distribution of Fragments in Reactions 96Ru+96Ru, 96Ru+96Zr, 96Zr+96Ru, and 96Zr+96Zr at Beam Energy 400 AMeV

The isospin distribution of particles and fragments in collisions 96Ru+96Ru, 96Ru+96Zr, 96Zr+96Ru, and 96Zr+96Zr at beam energy 400 AMeV is studied with isospin dependent QMD model. We find that the rapidity distribution of differential neutron-proton counting in neutron rich nucleus-nucleus collisions at intermediate energies is sensitive to the isospin dependent part of nuclear potential. The study of the N/Z ratio of nucleons, light charged particles (LCP) and intermediate mass fragments (IMF) shows that the isospin dependent part of nuclear potential drives IMF to be more isospin symmetric and emitted nucleons to be more neutron rich. From the study of the time evolution of the isospin distribution in emitted nucleons, LCP and IMF we find that neutrons diffuse much faster than protons at beginning and the final isospin distribution is a result of dynamical balance of symmetry potential and Coulomb force under the charge conservation.

An Improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics Model and its Applications to Fusion Reaction near Barrier

An improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics model is proposed. By using this model, the properties of ground state of nuclei from $^{6}$Li to $^{208}$Pb can be described very well with one set of parameters. The fusion reactions for $^{40}$Ca+$^{90}$Zr, $^{40}$Ca+$^{96}$Zr and $^{48}$Ca+$^{90}$Zr at energy near barrier are studied by this model. The experimental data of the fusion cross sections for $^{40}$Ca+$^{90,96}$Zr at the energy near barrier can be reproduced remarkably well without introducing any new parameters. The mechanism for the enhancement of fusion probability for fusion reactions with neutron-rich projectile or target is analyzed.

Dynamical Characteristics of a Hodgkin-Huxley neuron

By means of the concepts of factorial moment, return map and NM estimator, we analyze some responses of a HH neuron to various types of spike-train inputs. The corresponding fractal dimensions and values of NM estimators can describe the correlation characteristics quantitatively. It is found that all the intervals of successive output spikes may obey a power-law for some conditions. And in time scale the output series for a HH model for each type of inputs is correlated with typical correlation length and correlation strength. These power-law and correlation characteristics may be useful in the coding and decoding process of HH neurons. These concepts may distinguish different inputs quantitatively. Probing equilibration with respect to isospin degree of freedom in intermediate energy heavy ion collisions

We have studied equilibration with respect to isospin degree of freedom in four 96 mass systems $^{96}Ru+^{96}Ru$, $^{96}Ru+^{96}Zr$, $^{96}Zr+^{96}Ru$, $^{96}Zr+^{96}Zr$ at 100 AMeV and 400 AMeV with isospin dependent QMD. We propose that the neutron-proton differential rapidity distribution is a sensitive probe to the degree of equilibration with respect to the isospin degree of freedom. By analyzing the average $N/Z$ ratio of emitted nucleons, light charged particles (LCP) and intermediate mass fragments (IMF), it is found that there exist memory effect in multifragmentation process. The average $N/Z$ ratio of IMF reduces largely as beam energy increases from 100 AMeV to 400 AMeV which may result from the change of the behavior of the isotope distribution of IMF charges. The isotope distribution of IMF charges does also show certain memory effect at 100 AMeV case but not at 400 AMeV case.

Isospin Dependence of Nucleon-Nucleon Elastic Cross Section

The in-medium neutron-proton, proton-proton(neutron-neutron) scattering cross sections($σ_{np}^{*}$, $σ_{pp(nn)}^{*}$) are studied based on QHD-II type Lagrangian within the framework of the microscopic transport theory. The results demonstrate that, for free nucleon-nucleon scattering cross sections, the isospin dependence is dominantly caused by $ρ$ meson field. The medium correction of nucleon-nucleon scattering cross sections is also isospin dependent, $σ_{np}^{*}$ depends on the baryon density weakly and $σ_{pp(nn)}^{*}$ depends on the baryon density significantly, which is due to the different effects of the medium correction of nucleon mass and $ρ$ meson mass on $σ_{np}$ and $σ_{pp(nn)}$, respectively
