Fractional quantum Hall interface induced by geometric singularity

The geometric response of quantum Hall liquids is an important aspect to understand their topological characteristics in addition to the electromagnetic response. According to the Wen-Zee theory, the topological spin is coupled to the curvature of the space in which the electrons reside. The presence of conical geometry provides a local isolated geometric singularity, making it suitable for exploring the geometric response. In the context of two-dimensional electrons in a perpendicular magnetic field, each Landau orbit occupies the same area. The cone geometry naturally provides a structure in which the distances between two adjacent orbits gradually change and can be easily adjusted by altering the tip angle. The presence of a cone tip introduces a geometric singularity that affects the electron density and interacts with the motion of electrons, which has been extensively studied. Furthermore, this type of geometry can automatically create a smooth interface or crossover between the crystalline charge-density-wave state and the liquid-like fractional quantum Hall state. In this work, the properties of this interface are studied from multiple perspectives, shedding light on the behavior of quantum Hall liquids in such geometric configurations.

The structure of heavily doped impurity band in crystalline host

We study the properties of the impurity band in heavily-doped non-magnetic semiconductors using the Jacobi-Davidson algorithm and the supervised deep learning method. The disorder averaged inverse participation ratio (IPR) and thouless number calculation show us the rich structure inside the impurity band. A Convolutional Neural Network(CNN) model, which is trained to distinguish the extended/localized phase of the Anderson model with high accuracy, shows us the results in good agreement with the conventional approach. Together, we find that there are three mobility edges in the impurity band for a specific on-site impurity potential, which means the presence of the extended states while filling the impurity band.

The Monte Carlo simulation of the topological quantities in FQH systems

Generally speaking, for a fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state, the electronic occupation number for each Landau orbit could be obtained from numerical methods such as exact diagonalization, density matrix renormalization group or algebraic recursive schemes (Jack polynomial). In this work, we apply a Metroplis Monte Carlo method to calculate the occupation numbers of several FQH states in cylinder geometry. The convergent occupation numbers for more than 40 particles are used to verify the chiral bosonic edge theory and determine the topological quantities via momentum polarization or dipole moment. The guiding center spin, central charge and topological spin of different topological sectors are consistent with theoretical values and other numerical studies. Especially, we obtain the topological spin of $e/4$ quasihole in Moore-Read and 331 states. At last, we calculate the electron edge Green's functions and analysis position dependence of the non-Fermi liquid behavior.

The entanglement entropy of the quantum Hall edge and its geometric contribution

Generally speaking, the entanglement entropy (EE) between two subregions of a gapped quantum many-body state is proportional to the area/length of their interface due to the short range quantum correlation. However, the so-called area law is violated logarithmically in a quantum critical phase. Moreover, the subleading correction exists in a long range entangled topological phases. It is referred to as topological EE which is related to the quantum dimension of the collective excitation in the bulk. Further more, if a non-smooth sharp angle is in the presence of the subsystem boundary, a universal angle dependent geometric contribution is expected to appear in the subleading correction. In this work, we simultaneously explore the geometric and edge contribution in the integer quantum Hall (IQH) state and its edge reconstruction in a unified bipartite method. Their scaling is found to be consistent with the conformal field theory (CFT) predictions and recent results of the particle number fluctuation calculations.

Anyonic braiding via quench dynamics in fractional quantum Hall liquids

In a Laughlin fractional quantum Hall state, one- and two-quasihole states can be obtained by diagonalizing the many-body Hamiltonian with a trapping potential or, for larger systems, from the linear combination of the edge Jack polynomials. The quasihole states live entirely in the subspace of the lowest-energy branch in the energy spectrum with a fixed number of orbits, or a hard-wall confinement. The reduction in the Hilbert space dimension facilitates the study of time evolution of the quasihole states after, say, the removal of the trapping potential. We explore the quench dynamics under a harmonic external potential, which rotates the quasiholes in the droplet, and discuss the effect of long-range interaction and more realistic confinement. Accurate evaluation of the mutual statistics phase of anyons for a wide range of anyon separation can be achieved from the Berry-phase calculation.

Dynamics of Quantum Hall Interfaces

A quantum Hall (QH) interface is different from an ordinary QH edge, as the latter has its location determined by the confining potential, while the former can be unpinned and behave like a free string. In this paper, we demonstrate this difference by studying three different interfaces formed by (i) the Laughlin state and the vacuum, (ii) the Pfaffian state and the vacuum, and (iii) the Pfaffian and the anti-Pfaffian states. We find that string-like interfaces propagating freely in the QH system lead to very different dynamical properties from edges. This qualitative difference gives rise to fascinating new physics and suggests a new direction in future research on QH physics. We also discuss briefly possible analogies between QH interfaces and concepts in string theory.

Quantum tricriticality of chiral-coherent phase in quantum Rabi triangle

The interplay of interactions, symmetries and gauge fields usually leads to intriguing quantum many-body phases. To explore the nature of emerging phases, we study a quantum Rabi triangle system as an elementary building block for synthesizing an artificial magnetic field. We develop an analytical approach to study the rich phase diagram and the associated quantum criticality. Of particular interest is the emergence of a chiral-coherent phase, which breaks both the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and the chiral symmetry. In this chiral phase, photons flow unidirectionally and the chirality can be tuned by the artificial gauge field, exhibiting a signature of broken time-reversal symmetry. The finite-frequency scaling analysis further confirms the associated phase transition to be in the universality class of the Dicke model. This model can simulate a broad range of physical phenomena of light-matter coupling systems, and may have an application in future developments of various quantum information technologies.

Thermoelectric Hall conductivity of the fractional quantum Hall systems on a disk

For the fractional quantum Hall states on a finite disc, we study the thermoelectric transport properties under the influence of an edge and its reconstruction. In a recent study on a torus [Phys. Rev. B 101, 241101 (2020)], Sheng and Fu found a universal non-Fermi liquid power-law scaling of the thermoelectric conductivity $α_{xy} \propto T^η$ for the gapless composite Fermi-liquid state. The exponent $η\sim 0.5$ appears an independence of the filling factors and the details of the interactions. In the presence of an edge, we find the properties of the edge spectrum dominants the low-temperature behaviors and breaks the universal scaling law of the thermoelectric conductivity. In order to consider individually the effects of the edge states, the entanglement spectrum in real space is employed and tuned by varying the area of subsystem. In non-Abelian Moore-Read state, the Majorana neutral edge mode is found to have more significant effect than that of the charge mode in the low temperature.

A Study of Geometry in Anisotropic Quantum Hall States by Principal Component Analysis

In the presence of mass anisotropy, anisotropic interaction, or in-plane magnetic field, quantum Hall droplets can exhibit shape deformation and internal geometrical degree of freedom. We characterize the geometry of quantum Hall states by principal component analysis, which is a statistical technique that emphasizes variation in a dataset. We first test the method in an integer quantum Hall droplet with dipole-dipole interaction in disk geometry. In the subsequent application to fractional quantum Hall systems with anisotropic Coulomb interaction in torus geometry, we demonstrate that the principal component analysis can quantify the metric degree of freedom and predict the collapse of a $ν= 1/3$ state. We also calculate the metric response to interaction anisotropy at filling fractions $ν= 1/5$ and $2/5$ and show that the response is roughly the same within the same Jain sequence, but can differ at large anisotropy for different sequences.

Entanglement spectrum edge reconstruction and correlation hole of the FQH liquids

The edge of the electronic fractional quantum Hall (FQH) system obeys the law of the chiral Luttinger liquid theory due to its intrinsic topological properties and the relation of bulk-edge correspondence. However, in a realistic experimental system, such as the usual Hall bar setup, the soften of the background confinement potential can induce the reconstruction of the edge spectrum which breaks the chirality and universality of the FQH edge. The entanglement spectrum (ES) of the FQH ground state has the same counting structure as that in the energy spectrum indicating the topological characters of the quantum state. In this work, we report that the ES can also have an edge reconstruction while sweeping the area of the sub-system in real space cut. Moreover, we found the critical area of the sub-system matches accurately with the intrinsic building block of the fractional quantum Hall liquids, namely the correlation hole of the FQH liquids. The above results seem like be universal after our studying a series of typical FQH states, such as two Laughlin states at $ν= 1/3$ and $ν= 1/5$, and the Moore-Read state for $ν= 5/2$.

Edge Induced Topological Phase Transition of the Quantum Hall state at Half Filling

We show that in quantum Hall systems at half-filling, edge potentials alone can drive transitions between the Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian topological phases. We conjecture this is true in realistic systems even in the presence of weak bulk interactions that break the particle-hole symmetry. The strong effects of edge potentials could be understood from different topological shifts of competing phases, manifested on the disk geometry as the variation of orbital numbers at fixed number of particles. In particular, we show analytically particle-hole conjugation of Hamiltonians on the disk is equivalent to the tuning of edge potentials, which allows us to explicitly demonstrate the phase transition numerically. The importance of edge potentials in various experimental contexts, including the recently discovered particle-hole symmetric phase is also discussed.

Neutral excitation and bulk gap of the Fractional Quantum Hall liquids in disk geometry

For the numerical simulation of the fractional quantum Hall effects on a finite disk, the rotational symmetry is the only symmetry that were used in diagonalizing the Hamiltonian. In this work, we propose a method of using the weak translational symmetry for the center of mass of the many-body system. With this approach, the bulk properties , such as the energy gap and the magneto-roton excitation are exactly consistent with that in the closed manifold like sphere and torus. As an application, we consider the FQH phase and its phase transition in the fast rotated dipolar fermions. We thus weapon the disk geometry versatility in analyzing the bulk properties beside the usual edge physics.

Topological phase transition in a two-species fermion system: Effects of a rotating trap potential or a synthetic gauge field

We numerically investigate the quantum phases and phase transition in a system made of two species of fermionic atoms that interact with each other via $s$-wave Feshbach resonance, and are subject to rotation or a synthetic gauge field that puts the fermions at Landau level filling factor $ν_f = 2$. We show that the system undergoes a continuous quantum phase transition from a $ν_f = 2$ fermionic integer quantum Hall state formed by atoms, to a $ν_b = 1/2$ bosonic fractional quantum Hall state formed by bosonic diatomic molecules. In the disk geometry we use, these two different topological phases are distinguished by their different gapless edge excitation spectra, and the quantum phase transition between them is signaled by the closing of the energy gap in the bulk. Comparisons will be made with field theoretical predictions, and the case of $p$-wave pairing.

The behavior of the fractional quantum Hall states in the LLL and 1LL with in-plane magnetic field and Landau level mixing: a numerical investigation

By exactly solving the effective two-body interaction for two-dimensional electron system with layer thickness and an in-plane magnetic field, we recently found that the effective interaction can be described by the generalized pseudopotentials (PPs) without the rotational symmetry. With this pseudopotential description, we numerically investigate the behavior of the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states both in the lowest Landau level (LLL) and first Landau level (1LL). The enhancements of the 7/3 FQH state on the 1LL for a small tilted magnetic field are observed when layer thickness is larger than some critical values. While the gap of the 1/3 state in the LLL monotonically reduced with increasing the in-plane field. From the static structure factor calculation, we find that the systems are strongly anisotropic and finally enter into a stripe phase with a large tilting. With considering the Landau level mixing correction on the two-body interaction, we find the strong LL mixing cancels the enhancements of the FQH states in the 1LL.

Phase transition and intrinsic metric of the dipolar fermions in quantum Hall regime

For the fast rotating quasi-two-dimensional dipolar fermions in the quantum Hall regime, the interaction between two dipoles breaks the rotational symmetry when the dipole moment has component in the the plane via being tuned by an external field. For the anisotropic two-body interaction, we expand it in a generalized pseudopotentials (PPs). With assuming that all the dipoles are polarized in the same direction, we perform the numerical diagonalization for finite size systems on a torus. We find that the most stable fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states in the lowest Landau level (LLL) and the first Landau level (1LL) are ν = 1/3 and ν = 2 + 1/5 Laughlin state respectively in the isotropic case. While rotating the dipolar angle, these FQH states reveal a robustness and finally enter into a molecule phase in which all the particles are attracted and form a bound state. The anisotropy and the phase transition are studied by the intrinsic metric, the wave function overlap and the nematic order parameter.

Anisotropic Pseudopotential Characterization of Quantum Hall Systems under Tilted Magnetic Field

We analytically derived the effective two-body interaction for a finite thickness quantum Hall system with a harmonic perpendicular confinement and an in-plane magnetic field. The anisotropic effective interaction in the lowest Landau level (LLL) and first Landau level (1LL) are expanded in the basis of the generalized pseudopotentials (PPs), and we analyze how the coefficients of some prominent isotropic and anisotropic PPs depend on the thickness of the sample and the strength of the in-plane magnetic field. We also investigate the stability of the topological quantum Hall states, especially the Laughlin state and its emergent guiding center metric, which we can now compute analytically. An interesting reorientation of the anisotropy direction of the Laughlin state in the 1LL is revealed, and we also discuss various possible experimental ramifications for this quantum Hall system with broken rotational symmetry.

Universal properties of the FQH state from the topological entanglement entropy and disorder effects

The topological entanglement entropy (TEE) is a robust measurement of the quantum many-body state with topological order. In fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state, it has a connection to the quantum dimension of the state itself and its quasihole excitations from the conformal field theory (CFT) description. We study the entanglement entropy (EE) in the Moore-Read (MR) and Read-Rezayi (RR) FQH states. The non-Abelian quasi- hole excitation induces an extra correction of the TEE which is related to its quantum dimension. With considering the effects of the disorder, the ground state TEE is stable before the spectral gap closing and the level statistics seems to have significant change with a stronger disorder, which indicates a many-body localization (MBL) transition.

Topological Quantum Phase Transition from Fermionic Integer Quantum Hall Phase to Bosonic Fractional Quantum Hall Phase through P-Wave Feshbach Resonance

We use exact diagonalization to study the quantum phases and phase transitions when a single species of fermionic atoms at Landau level filling factor $ν_f = 1$ in a rotating trap interact through a p-wave Feshbach resonance. We show that under weak pairing interaction, the system undergoes a second order quantum phase transition from $ν_{f} = 1$ fermionic integer quantum Hall (FIQH) state at positive detuning, to $ν_{b} = \frac{1}{4}$ bosonic fractional quantum Hall (BFQH) state at negative detuning. However, when the pairing interaction increases, a new phase between them emerges, corresponding to a fraction of fermionic atoms stay in a coherent superposition of bosonic molecule state and an unbound pair. The phase transition from FIQH phase to the new phase is of second order and that from the new phase to BFQH phase is of first order.
