Generalized Pseudopotentials for the Anisotropic Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

We generalize the notion of Haldane pseudopotentials to anisotropic fractional quantum Hall (FQH) systems which are physically realized, e.g., in tilted magnetic field experiments or anisotropic band structures. This formalism allows us to expand any translation-invariant interaction over a complete basis, and directly reveals the intrinsic metric of incompressible FQH fluids. We show that purely anisotropic pseudopotentials give rise to new types of bound states for small particle clusters in the infinite plane, and can be used as a diagnostic of FQH nematic order. We also demonstrate that generalized pseudopotentials quantify the anisotropic contribution to the effective interaction potential, which can be particularly large in models of fractional Chern insulators.

Identification of the Fractional quantum Hall edge modes by density oscillations

The neutral fermionic edge mode is essential to the non-Abelian topological property and its experimental detection in $Z_k$ fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state for $k > 1$. Usually, the identification of the edge modes in a finite size system is difficult, especially near the region of the edge reconstruction, due to mixing with the bosonic edge mode and the bulk states as well. We study the edge-mode excitations of the Moore-Read (MR) and Read-Rezayi (RR) states by using Jack polynomials in the truncated subspace. It is found that the electron density, as a detector, has marked different behaviors between the bosonic and fermionic edge modes. As an application, it helps us to identify them near the edge reconstruction and in the RR edge spectrum. On the other hand, we systematically study the edge excitations for the RR state, extrapolate the edge velocities and their related coherence length and temperature in the interferometer experiments.

Scaling analysis of the quasiparticle tunneling in the ${\mathbb Z}_k$ parafermion states

Quasiparticle tunneling between two counter-propagating edges through point contacts could provide information on the statistics of the quasiparticles. Previous study on a disk found a scaling behavior by varying the tunneling distance. It was found that in the limit with zero tunneling distance, the Abelian quasiparticles tunneling obey the scaling analysis while the non-Abelian quasiparticles exhibit some non-trivial behaviors on the scaling exponents. Because of the limitation of disk geometry, we put the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state on the surface of a cylinder which has a larger tunable tunneling distance than that on disk by varying the aspect ratio $γ$. We analyze the scaling behavior of the quasiholes, especially the non-Abelian quasiholes in the Read-Rezayi ${\mathbb Z}_k$ parafermion states. We aim to address the existance of the anomalous correction of the scaling parameter in the long tunneling distance.

The length scale measurements of the Fractional quantum Hall state on cylinder

Once the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state for a finite size system is put on the surface of a cylinder, the distance between the two ends with open boundary conditions can be tuned as varying the aspect ratio $γ$. It scales linearly as increasing the system size and therefore has a larger adjustable range than that on disk. The previous study of the quasi-hole tunneling amplitude on disk in Ref.~\cite{Zk2011} indicates that the tunneling amplitudes have a scaling behavior as a function of the tunneling distance and the scaling exponents are related to the scaling dimension and the charge of the transported quasiparticles. However, the scaling behaviors poorly due to the narrow range of the tunneling distance on disk. Here we systematically study the quasiparticle tunneling amplitudes of the Laughlin state in the cylinder geometry which shows a much better scaling behavior. Especially, there are some corssover behaviors at two length scales when the two open edges are close to each other. These lengths are also reflected in the bipartite entanglement and the electron Green's function as either a singularity or a crossover. These two critical length scales of the edge-edge distance, $L_x^{c_1}$ and $L_x^{c_2}$, are found to be related to the dimension reduction and back scattering point respectively.

The single-mode description of the integer quantum Hall state with dipole-dipole interaction

A topological phase can often be represented by a corresponding wavefunction (exact eigenstate of a model Hamiltonian) that has a higher underlying symmetry than necessary. When the symmetry is explicitly broken in the Hamiltonian, the model wavefunction fails to account for the change due to the lack of a variational parameter. Here we exemplify the case by an integer quantum Hall system with anisotropic interaction. We demonstrate the recovery of the variational parameter in a single-mode approximation, which is consistent with the recently proposed geometric consideration of the quantum Hall phases.

Construction of the edge states in fractional quantum Hall systems by Jack polynomial

We study the edge-mode excitations of a fractional quantum Hall droplet by expressing the edge state wavefunctions as linear combinations of Jack polynomials with a negative parameter. We show that the exact diagonalization within subspace of Jack polynomials can be used to generate the chiral edge-mode excitation spectrum in the Laughlin phase and the Moore-Read phase with realistic Coulomb interaction. The truncation technique for the edge excitations simplifies the procedure to extract reliably the edge-mode velocities, which avoids the otherwise complicated analysis of the full spectrum that contains both edge and bulk excitations. Generalization to the Read-Rezayi state is also discussed.

Edge reconstruction of fractional quantum Hall liquids with spin degrees of freedom

We study the interplay of confining potential, electron-electron interaction, and Zeeman splitting at the edges of fractional quantum Hall liquids, using numerical diagonalization of finite-size systems. The filling factors studied include 1/3, 5/2, 2/5, and 2/3. In the absence of Zeeman splitting and an edge, the first two have spin fully polarized ground states, while the latter two have singlet ground states. We find that with few exceptions, edge instabilities of these systems are triggered by softening of edge spin waves for Abelian fractional quantum Hall liquids (1/3, 2/5 and 2/3 liquids), and are triggered by softening of edge magnetoplasmon excitations for non-Abelian 5/2 liquid at the smoother confinement side. Phase diagrams are obtained in the accessible parameter spaces.

Theory of unconventional quantum Hall effect in strained graphene

We show through both theoretical arguments and numerical calculations that graphene discerns an unconventional sequence of quantized Hall conductivity, when subject to both magnetic fields (B) and strain. The latter produces time-reversal symmetric pseudo/axial magnetic fields (b). The single-electron spectrum is composed of two interpenetrating sets of Landau levels (LLs), located at $\pm \sqrt{2 n |b \pm B|}$, $n=0, 1, 2, \cdots$. For $b>B$, these two sets of LLs have opposite \emph{chiralities}, resulting in {\em oscillating} Hall conductivity between 0 and $\mp 2 e^2/h$ in electron and hole doped system, respectively, as the chemical potential is tuned in the vicinity of the neutrality point. The electron-electron interactions stabilize various correlated ground states, e.g., spin-polarized, quantum spin-Hall insulators at and near the neutrality point, and possibly the anomalous Hall insulating phase at incommensurate filling $\sim B$. Such broken-symmetry ground states have similarities as well as significant differences from their counterparts in the absence of strain. For realistic strength of magnetic fields and interactions, we present scaling of the interaction-induced gap for various Hall states within the zeroth Landau level.

Model Wavefunctions for the Collective Modes and the Magneto-roton Theory of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

We construct model wavefunctions for the collective modes of fractional quantum Hall systems. The wavefunctions are expressed in terms of symmetric polynomials characterized by a root partition and a "squeezed" basis, and show excellent agreement with exact diagonalization results for finite systems. In the long wavelength limit, the model wavefunctions reduce to those predicted by the single-mode approximation, and remain accurate at energies above the continuum of roton pairs.

Comparison of the density-matrix renormalization group method applied to fractional quantum Hall systems in different geometries

We report a systematic study of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method on two different geometries: the sphere and the cylinder. We provide convergence benchmarks based on model Hamiltonians known to possess exact zero-energy ground states, as well as an analysis of the number of sweeps and basis elements that need to be kept in order to achieve the desired accuracy. The ground state energies of the Coulomb Hamiltonian at $ν=1/3$ and $ν=5/2$ filling are extracted and compared with the results obtained by previous DMRG implementations in the literature. A remarkably rapid convergence in the cylinder geometry is noted and suggests that this boundary condition is particularly suited for the application of the DMRG method to the FQHE.

Realizing Universal Edge Properties in Graphene Fractional Quantum Hall Liquids

Universal chiral Luttinger liquid behavior has been predicted for fractional quantum Hall edge states, but so far has not been observed experimentally in semiconductor-based two-dimensional electron gases. One likely cause of this absence of universality is the generic occurrence of edge reconstruction in such systems, which is the result of a competition between confinement potential and Coulomb repulsion. We show that due to a completely different mechanism of confinement, edge reconstruction can be avoided in graphene, which allows for the observation of the predicted universality.

Edge States at the Interface between Monolayer and Bilayer Graphene

The electronic property of monolayer-bilayer hybrid graphene with a zigzag interface is studied by both the Dirac equation and numerical calculation. There are two types of zigzag interface stacks. The dispersion and local density of states behave quit differently along the interface at the Fermi energy due to the different locations of the edge state. We hope our study can give some insights in the understanding of the transport and STM experiments.

Scaling and non-Abelian signature in fractional quantum Hall quasiparticle tunneling amplitude

We study the scaling behavior in the tunneling amplitude when quasiparticles tunnel along a straight path between the two edges of a fractional quantum Hall annulus. Such scaling behavior originates from the propagation and tunneling of charged quasielectrons and quasiholes in an effective field analysis. In the limit when the annulus deforms continuously into a quasi-one-dimensional ring, we conjecture the exact functional form of the tunneling amplitude for several cases, which reproduces the numerical results in finite systems exactly. The results for Abelian quasiparticle tunneling is consistent with the scaling anaysis; this allows for the extraction of the conformal dimensions of the quasiparticles. We analyze the scaling behavior of both Abelian and non-Abelian quasiparticles in the Read-Rezayi Z_k-parafermion states. Interestingly, the non-Abelian quasiparticle tunneling amplitudes exhibit nontrivial k-dependent corrections to the scaling exponent.

Edge-mode velocities and thermal coherence of quantum Hall interferometers

We present comprehensive results on the edge-mode velocities in a quantum Hall droplet with realistic interaction and confinement at various filling fractions. We demonstrate that the charge-mode velocity scales roughly with the valence Landau level filling fraction and the Coulomb energy in the corresponding Landau level. At Landau level filling fraction nu = 5/2, the stark difference between the bosonic charge-mode velocity and the fermionic neutral-mode velocity can manifest itself in the thermal smearing of the non-Abelian quasiparticle interference. We estimate the dependence of the coherence temperature on the confining potential strength, which may be tunable experimentally to enhance the non-Abelian state.

Quasiparticle tunneling in the Moore-Read fractional quantum Hall State

In fractional quantum Hall systems, quasiparticles of fractional charge can tunnel between the edges at a quantum point contact. Such tunneling (or backscattering) processes contribute to charge transport, and provide information on both the charge and statistics of the quasiparticles involved. Here we study quasiparticle tunneling in the Moore-Read state, in which quasiparticles of charge e/4 (non-Abelian) and e/2 (Abelian) may co-exist and both contribute to edge transport. On a disk geometry, we calculate the matrix elements for e/2 and e/4 quasiholes to tunnel through the bulk of the Moore-Read state, in an attempt to understand their relative importance. We find the tunneling amplitude for charge e/2 quasihole is exponentially smaller than that for charge e/4 quasihole, and the ratio between them can be (partially) attributed to their charge difference. We find that including long-range Coulomb interaction only has a weak effect on the ratio. We discuss briefly the relevance of these results to recent tunneling and interferometry experiments at filling factor nu=5/2.

Edge states in a honeycomb lattice: effects of anisotropic hopping and mixed edges

We study the edge states in graphene in the presence of a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the lattice. Most of the works done so far discuss the edge states in either zigzag or armchair edge graphene considering an isotropic electron hopping. In practice, graphene can have mixture of armchair and zigzag edges and the electron hopping can be anisotropic, which is the subject of this article. We predict that the mixed edges smear the enhanced local density of states (LDOS) at E=0 of the zigzag edge and, on the other hand, the anisotropic hopping gives rise to the enhanced LDOS at E=0 in the armchair edge. The behavior of the LDOS can be studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments. We suggest that care must be taken while interpreting the STM data. It is because the clear distinction between the zigzag edge (enhanced LDOS at E=0) and armchair edge (suppressed LDOS at E=0) can be lost if the hopping is not isotropic and if the edges are mixed.

Ground state and edge excitations of quantum Hall liquid at filling factor 2/3

We present a numerical study of fractional quantum Hall liquid at Landau level filling factor $ν=2/3$ in a microscopic model including long-range Coulomb interaction and edge confining potential, based on the disc geometry. We find the ground state is accurately described by the particle-hole conjugate of a $ν=1/3$ Laughlin state. We also find there are two counter-propagating edge modes, and the velocity of the forward-propagating mode is larger than the backward-propagating mode. The velocities have opposite responses to the change of the background confinement potential. On the other hand changing the two-body Coulomb potential has qualitatively the same effect on the velocities; for example we find increasing layer thickness (which softens of the Coulomb interaction) reduces both the forward mode and the backward mode velocities.

Fractional quantum Hall effect at $ν= 5/2$: Ground states, non-Abelian quasiholes, and edge modes in a microscopic model

We present a comprehensive numerical study of a microscopic model of the fractional quantum Hall system at filling fraction $ν= 5/2$, based on the disc geometry. Our model includes Coulomb interaction and a semi-realistic confining potential. We also mix in some three-body interaction in some cases to help elucidate the physics. We obtain a phase diagram, discuss the conditions under which the ground state can be described by the Moore-Read state, and study its competition with neighboring stripe phases. We also study quasihole excitations and edge excitations in the Moore-Read--like state. From the evolution of edge spectrum, we obtain the velocities of the charge and neutral edge modes, which turn out to be very different. This separation of velocities is a source of decoherence for a non-Abelian quasihole/quasiparticle (with charge $\pm e/4$) when propagating at the edge; using numbers obtained from a specific set of parameters we estimate the decoherence length to be around four microns. This sets an upper bound for the separation of the two point contacts in a double point contact interferometer, designed to detect the non-Abelian nature of such quasiparticles. We also find a state that is a potential candidate for the recently proposed anti-Pfaffian state. We find the speculated anti-Pfaffian state is favored in weak confinement (smooth edge) while the Moore-Read Pfaffian state is favored in strong confinement (sharp edge).
