Precise Indoor Positioning Based on UWB and Deep Learning

We examined UWB-based indoor location in conjunction with a fingerprint technique in this work. We built a connection between the measured and real distances for the UWB indoor positioning system. This connection is used to produce a distance database that may be used to generate fringerprints. We created a BP neural network to classify the target node to the relevant fringerpint using the distance database. Our suggested deep learning technology considerably enhances location accuracy when compared to existing trilateration systems.

Machine Learning aided Precise Indoor Positioning

This study describes a UWB and Machine Learning (ML)-based indoor positioning system. We propose a simple mathematical strategy to create data to reduce the job of measurements for fingerprint-based indoor localization systems. A considerable number of measurements can be avoided this way. The paper compares and contrasts the performance of four distinct models. Most test locations' average error may be reduced to less than 150 mm using the best model.

Design of an Internet of Things System for Smart Hospitals

With the fast advancement of smart devices and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, certain established situations are opening up new avenues of exploration. Particularly in the sphere of healthcare, the diverse and big population, the complicated and professional data, and the stringent environmental requirements for certain medical scenes and equipment all impose exceptionally high standards on hospital administration. As a result, an effective and secure Internet of things system is critical. This article proposes an IoT system that might be used in hospitals for a variety of purposes. This system collects data by LoRa, Wi-Fi, and other ways, uploads it to a cloud platform for processing over a secure connection, and then feeds it back to users in real-time via the user interface. This system enables precise indoor localization through the use of UWB, ECG signal detection, environmental monitoring, and data on people flow.

Performance Analysis of Multiple-Antenna Ambient Backscatter Systems at Finite Blocklengths

This paper analyzes the maximal achievable rate for a given blocklength and error probability over a multiple-antenna ambient backscatter channel with perfect channel state information at the receiver. The result consists of a finite blocklength channel coding achievability bound and a converse bound based on the Neyman-Pearson test and the normal approximation based on the Berry- Esseen Theorem. Numerical evaluation of these bounds shows fast convergence to the channel capacity as the blocklength increases and also proves that the channel dispersion is an accurate measure of the backoff from capacity due to finite blocklength.

Emotion Recognition using Machine Learning and ECG signals

Various emotions can produce variations in electrocardiograph (ECG) signals, distinct emotions can be distinguished by different changes in ECG signals. This study is about emotion recognition using ECG signals. Data for four emotions, namely happy, exciting, calm, and tense, is gathered. The raw data is then de-noised with a finite impulse filter. We use the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) to extract characteristics from the obtained data to increase the accuracy of emotion recognition. The classifiers Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest, and K-NN are explored. To find the optimal parameters for the SVM classifier, the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique is used. The results of the comparison of these classification methods demonstrate that the SVM approach has a greater accuracy in emotion recognition, which may be applied in practice

Human Biometric Signals Monitoring based on WiFi Channel State Information using Deep Learning

In this paper, we first present a single-input, multiple-output convolutional neural network that can estimate both heart rate and respiration rate simultaneously by exploiting the underlying link between heart rate and respiration rate. The inputs to the neural network are the amplitude and phase of channel state information collected by a pair of WiFi devices. Our WiFi-based technique addresses privacy concerns and is adaptable to a variety of settings. This system overall accuracy for the heart and respiration rate estimation can reach 99.109% and 98.581%, respectively. Furthermore, we developed and analyzed two deep learning-based neural network classification algorithms for categorizing four types of sleep stages: wake, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, non-rapid eye movement (NREM) light sleep, and NREM deep sleep. This system overall classification accuracy can reach 95.925%

Significant Low-dimensional Spectral-temporal Features for Seizure Detection

Seizure onset detection in electroencephalography (EEG) signals is a challenging task due to the non-stereotyped seizure activities as well as their stochastic and non-stationary characteristics in nature. Joint spectral-temporal features are believed to contain sufficient and powerful feature information for absence seizure detection. However, the resulting high-dimensional features involve redundant information and require heavy computational load. Here, we discover significant low-dimensional spectral-temporal features in terms of mean-standard deviation of wavelet transform coefficient (MS-WTC), based on which a novel absence seizure detection framework is developed. The EEG signals are transformed into the spectral-temporal domain, with their low-dimensional features fed into a convolutional neural network. Superior detection performance is achieved on the widely-used benchmark dataset as well as a clinical dataset from the Chinese 301 Hospital. For the former, seven classification tasks were evaluated with the accuracy from 99.8% to 100.0%, while for the latter, the method achieved a mean accuracy of 94.7%, overwhelming other methods with low-dimensional temporal and spectral features. Experimental results on two seizure datasets demonstrate reliability, efficiency and stability of our proposed MS-WTC method, validating the significance of the extracted low-dimensional spectral-temporal features.

Hybrid 3D Beamforming Relying on Sensor-Based Training and Channel Estimation for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Aided TeraHertz MIMO systems

Terahertz (THz) systems have the benefit of high bandwidth and hence are capable of supporting ultra-high data rates, albeit at the cost of high pathloss. Hence they tend to harness high-gain beamforming. Therefore a novel hybrid 3D beamformer relying on sophisticated sensor-based beam training and channel estimation is proposed for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) aided THz MIMO systems. A so-called array-of-subarray based THz BS architecture is adopted and the corresponding sub-RIS structure is proposed. The BS, RIS and receiver antenna arrays of the users are all uniform planar arrays (UPAs). The Ultra-wideband (UWB) sensors are integrated into the RIS and the user location information obtained by the UWB sensors is exploited for channel estimation and beamforming. Furthermore, the novel concept of a Precise Beamforming Algorithm (PBA) is proposed, which further improves the beam-forming accuracy by circumventing the performance limitations imposed by positioning errors. Moreover, the conditions of maintaining the orthogonality of the RIS-aided THz channel are derived in support of spatial multiplexing. The closed-form expressions of the near-field and far-field path-loss are also derived. Our simulation results show that the proposed scheme accurately estimates the RIS-aided THz channel and the spectral efficiency is much improved, despite its low complexity. This makes our solution eminently suitable for delay-sensitive applications.

Negative-ResNet: Noisy Ambulatory Electrocardiogram Signal Classification Scheme

With recently successful applications of deep learning in computer vision and general signal processing, deep learning has shown many unique advantages in medical signal processing. However, data labelling quality has become one of the most significant issues for AI applications, especially when it requires domain knowledge (e.g. medical image labelling). In addition, there might be noisy labels in practical datasets, which might impair the training process of neural networks. In this work, we propose a semi-supervised algorithm for training data samples with noisy labels by performing selected Positive Learning (PL) and Negative Learning (NL). To verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, we designed a portable ECG patch -- iRealCare -- and applied the algorithm on a real-life dataset. Our experimental results show that we can achieve an accuracy of 91.0 %, which is 6.2 % higher than a normal training process with ResNet. There are 65 patients in our dataset and we randomly picked 2 patients to perform validation.

A Wearable ECG Monitor for Deep Learning Based Real-Time Cardiovascular Disease Detection

Cardiovascular disease has become one of the most significant threats endangering human life and health. Recently, Electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring has been transformed into remote cardiac monitoring by Holter surveillance. However, the widely used Holter can bring a great deal of discomfort and inconvenience to the individuals who carry them. We developed a new wireless ECG patch in this work and applied a deep learning framework based on the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long Short-term Memory (LSTM) models. However, we find that the models using the existing techniques are not able to differentiate two main heartbeat types (Supraventricular premature beat and Atrial fibrillation) in our newly obtained dataset, resulting in low accuracy of 58.0 %. We proposed a semi-supervised method to process the badly labelled data samples with using the confidence-level-based training. The experiment results conclude that the proposed method can approach an average accuracy of 90.2 %, i.e., 5.4 % higher than the accuracy of conventional ECG classification methods.

Federated Learning for Smart Healthcare: A Survey

Recent advances in communication technologies and Internet-of-Medical-Things have transformed smart healthcare enabled by artificial intelligence (AI). Traditionally, AI techniques require centralized data collection and processing that may be infeasible in realistic healthcare scenarios due to the high scalability of modern healthcare networks and growing data privacy concerns. Federated Learning (FL), as an emerging distributed collaborative AI paradigm, is particularly attractive for smart healthcare, by coordinating multiple clients (e.g., hospitals) to perform AI training without sharing raw data. Accordingly, we provide a comprehensive survey on the use of FL in smart healthcare. First, we present the recent advances in FL, the motivations, and the requirements of using FL in smart healthcare. The recent FL designs for smart healthcare are then discussed, ranging from resource-aware FL, secure and privacy-aware FL to incentive FL and personalized FL. Subsequently, we provide a state-of-the-art review on the emerging applications of FL in key healthcare domains, including health data management, remote health monitoring, medical imaging, and COVID-19 detection. Several recent FL-based smart healthcare projects are analyzed, and the key lessons learned from the survey are also highlighted. Finally, we discuss interesting research challenges and possible directions for future FL research in smart healthcare.

When Machine Learning Meets Privacy: A Survey and Outlook

The newly emerged machine learning (e.g. deep learning) methods have become a strong driving force to revolutionize a wide range of industries, such as smart healthcare, financial technology, and surveillance systems. Meanwhile, privacy has emerged as a big concern in this machine learning-based artificial intelligence era. It is important to note that the problem of privacy preservation in the context of machine learning is quite different from that in traditional data privacy protection, as machine learning can act as both friend and foe. Currently, the work on the preservation of privacy and machine learning (ML) is still in an infancy stage, as most existing solutions only focus on privacy problems during the machine learning process. Therefore, a comprehensive study on the privacy preservation problems and machine learning is required. This paper surveys the state of the art in privacy issues and solutions for machine learning. The survey covers three categories of interactions between privacy and machine learning: (i) private machine learning, (ii) machine learning aided privacy protection, and (iii) machine learning-based privacy attack and corresponding protection schemes. The current research progress in each category is reviewed and the key challenges are identified. Finally, based on our in-depth analysis of the area of privacy and machine learning, we point out future research directions in this field.

Distributed Caching for Data Dissemination in the Downlink of Heterogeneous Networks

Heterogeneous cellular networks (HCN) with embedded small cells are considered, where multiple mobile users wish to download network content of different popularity. By caching data into the small-cell base stations (SBS), we will design distributed caching optimization algorithms via belief propagation (BP) for minimizing the downloading latency. First, we derive the delay-minimization objective function (OF) and formulate an optimization problem. Then we develop a framework for modeling the underlying HCN topology with the aid of a factor graph. Furthermore, distributed BP algorithm is proposed based on the network's factor graph. Next, we prove that a fixed point of convergence exists for our distributed BP algorithm. In order to reduce the complexity of the BP, we propose a heuristic BP algorithm. Furthermore, we evaluate the average downloading performance of our HCN for different numbers and locations of the base stations (BS) and mobile users (MU), with the aid of stochastic geometry theory. By modeling the nodes distributions using a Poisson point process, we develop the expressions of the average factor graph degree distribution, as well as an upper bound of the outage probability for random caching schemes. We also improve the performance of random caching. Our simulations show that (1) the proposed distributed BP algorithm has a near-optimal delay performance, approaching that of the high-complexity exhaustive search method, (2) the modified BP offers a good delay performance at a low communication complexity, (3) both the average degree distribution and the outage upper bound analysis relying on stochastic geometry match well with our Monte-Carlo simulations, and (4) the optimization based on the upper bound provides both a better outage and a better delay performance than the benchmarks.

Power Adaptive Network Coding for a Non-Orthogonal Multiple-Access Relay Channel

In this paper we propose a novel power adapted network coding (PANC) for a non-orthogonal multiple-access relay channel (MARC), where two sources transmit their information simultaneously to the destination with the help of a relay. Different from the conventional XOR-based network coding (CXNC), the relay in our PANC generates network coded bits by considering the coefficients of the source-to-relay channels, and forwards each bit with a pre-optimized power level. Specifically, by defining a symbol pair as two symbols from the two sources, we first derive the exact symbol pair error rate (SPER) of the system. Noting that the generations of the exact SPER are complicated due to the irregularity of the decision regions caused by random channel coefficients, we propose a coordinate transform (CT) method to simplify the derivations of the SPER. Next, we prove that with a power scaling factor at relay, our PANC scheme can achieve full diversity gain, i.e., two-order diversity gain, of the system, while the CXNC can only achieve one-order diversity gain due to multi-user interference. In addition, we optimize the power levels at the relay to equivalently minimize the SPER at the destination concerning the relationship between SPER and minimum Euclidean distance of the received constellation. Simulation results show that (1) the SPER derived based on our CT method can well approximate the exact SPER with a much lower complexity; (2) the PANC scheme with power level optimizations and power scaling factor design can achieve full diversity, and obtain a much higher coding gain than the PANC scheme with randomly chosen power levels.

Privacy Preserving Location Data Publishing: A Machine Learning Approach

Publishing datasets plays an essential role in open data research and promoting transparency of government agencies. However, such data publication might reveal users' private information. One of the most sensitive sources of data is spatiotemporal trajectory datasets. Unfortunately, merely removing unique identifiers cannot preserve the privacy of users. Adversaries may know parts of the trajectories or be able to link the published dataset to other sources for the purpose of user identification. Therefore, it is crucial to apply privacy preserving techniques before the publication of spatiotemporal trajectory datasets. In this paper, we propose a robust framework for the anonymization of spatiotemporal trajectory datasets termed as machine learning based anonymization (MLA). By introducing a new formulation of the problem, we are able to apply machine learning algorithms for clustering the trajectories and propose to use $k$-means algorithm for this purpose. A variation of $k$-means algorithm is also proposed to preserve the privacy in overly sensitive datasets. Moreover, we improve the alignment process by considering multiple sequence alignment as part of the MLA. The framework and all the proposed algorithms are applied to TDrive and Geolife location datasets. The experimental results indicate a significantly higher utility of datasets by anonymization based on MLA framework.

Extended Kalman Filter Beam Tracking for Millimeter Wave Vehicular Communications

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is a promising technology to meet the ever-growing data traffic of vehicular communications. Unfortunately, more frequent channel estimations are required in this spectrum due to the narrow beams employed to compensate for the high path loss. Hence, the development of highly efficient beam tracking algorithms is essential to enable the technology, particularly for fast-changing environments in vehicular communications. In this paper, we propose an innovative scheme for beam tracking based on the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), improving the mean square error performance by 49% in vehicular settings. We propose to use the position, velocity, and channel coefficient as state variables of the EKF algorithm and show that such an approach results in improved beam tracking with low computational complexity by taking the kinematic characteristics of the system into account. We also explicitly derive the closed-from expressions for the Jacobian matrix of the EKF algorithm.
