Exciton-magnon splitting in van der Waals antiferromagnet MnPS$_3$ unveiled by second-harmonic generation

Ultrafast and coherent generation of magnons is of great significance for high-speed antiferromagnetic spintronics. One possible route is by exciton-magnon pairwise optical excitation. To date, such exciton-magnon transitions have been studied mostly by linear optical means in a limited number of conventional three-dimensional antiferromagnets. Here we investigate this correlated transition in van der Waals antiferromagnet MnPS$_3$ by using resonant second-harmonic generation spectroscopy, a nonlinear optical probe sensitive to the symmetry of electronic and magnetic excitations. Two exciton-magnon peaks are observed, in line with the exciton-induced splitting of magnon density of states predicted by a Koster-Slater type theory, indicating significant exciton-magnon interactions. In addition, a large linear magnetoelectric effect of excitons is observed. These findings provide renewed understandings on the correlation effects in two-dimensional magnets with enhanced quasiparticle scattering cross-sections, and point to potential coherent control among charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom in two-dimensional magnets by optical means.

Pseudo-Siamese Network based Timbre-reserved Black-box Adversarial Attack in Speaker Identification

In this study, we propose a timbre-reserved adversarial attack approach for speaker identification (SID) to not only exploit the weakness of the SID model but also preserve the timbre of the target speaker in a black-box attack setting. Particularly, we generate timbre-reserved fake audio by adding an adversarial constraint during the training of the voice conversion model. Then, we leverage a pseudo-Siamese network architecture to learn from the black-box SID model constraining both intrinsic similarity and structural similarity simultaneously. The intrinsic similarity loss is to learn an intrinsic invariance, while the structural similarity loss is to ensure that the substitute SID model shares a similar decision boundary to the fixed black-box SID model. The substitute model can be used as a proxy to generate timbre-reserved fake audio for attacking. Experimental results on the Audio Deepfake Detection (ADD) challenge dataset indicate that the attack success rate of our proposed approach yields up to 60.58% and 55.38% in the white-box and black-box scenarios, respectively, and can deceive both human beings and machines.

Twisting of 2D kagomé sheets in layered intermetallics

Chemical bonding in 2D layered materials and van der Waals solids is central to understanding and harnessing their unique electronic, magnetic, optical, thermal and superconducting properties. Here we report the discovery of spontaneous, bidirectional, bilayer twisting (twist angle ~ 4.5°) in the metallic kagomé MgCo6Ge6 at T = 100(2) K via X-ray diffraction measure-ments, enabled by the preparation of single crystals by the Laser Bridgman method. Despite the appearance of static twisting on cooling from T ~ 300 K to 100 K, no evidence for a phase transition was found in physical properties measurements. Combined with the presence of an Einstein phonon mode contribution in the specific heat, this implies that the twisting exists at all temperatures but is thermally fluctuating at room temperature. Crystal Orbital Hamilton Population analysis demonstrates that the cooperative twisting between layers stabilizes the Co-kagomé network when coupled to strongly bonded and rigid (Ge2) dimers that connect adjacent layers. Further modelling of the displacive disorder in the crystal structure shows the presence of second, Mg-deficient, stacking sequence. This alternative stacking sequence also exhibits inter-layer twisting, but with a different pattern, consistent with the change in electron count due to removal of Mg. Magnetization, resistivity, and low-temperature specific heat measurements are all consistent with a Pauli paramagnetic, strongly correlated metal. Our results provide crucial insight into how chemical concepts lead to interesting electronic structures and behaviors in layered materials.

Inlaid ReS2 Quantum Dots in Monolayer MoS2

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are prospective materials for quantum devices owing to their inherent 2D confinements. They also provide a platform to realize even lower-dimensional in-plane electron confinement, e.g., 0D quantum dots, for exotic physical properties. However, fabrication of such laterally confined monolayer (1L) nanostructure in 1L crystals remains challenging. Here we report the realization of 1L ReS2 quantum dots epitaxially inlaid in 1L MoS2 by a two-step chemical vapor deposition method combining with plasma treatment. The lateral lattice mismatch between ReS2 and MoS2 leads to size-dependent crystal structure evolution and in-plane straining of the 1L ReS2 nanodots. Optical spectroscopies reveal the abnormal charge transfer between the 1L ReS2 quantum dots and the MoS2 matrix, resulting from electron trapping in the 1L ReS2 quantum dots. This study may pave the way for realizing in-plane quantum-confined devices in 2D materials for potential applications in quantum information.

Exchange-dominated Standing Spin Wave Excitations under microwave irradiation in Ni80Fe20 Thin Films

We investigated the microwave-assisted DC voltages of ferromagnetic resonances and exchangedominated standing spin wave excitations in two different in-plane magnetized permalloy thin films via homodyne detection. The line shapes of ferromagnetic resonance spectra and the dispersion curves of ferromagnetic resonance and standing spin wave are in agreement of previous studies, while further investigations of DC voltage spectra for these two excitations reveal that 1. unlike ferromagnetic resonance signals, the anti-symmetrical line shapes of standing spin wave excitations are not depend on the electromagnetic relative phase of assisted microwave, and 2. linewidths of their DC voltage spectra are distinct. The complicated spin dynamics of standing spin wave is consequently discussed by applying Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in term of exchange interaction.

Magnetization Characteristic of Ferromagnetic Thin Strip by Measuring Anisotropic Magnetoresistance and Ferromagnetic Resonance

The magnetization characteristic in a permalloy thin strip is investigated by electrically measuring the anisotropic magnetoresistance and ferromagnetic resonance in in-plane and out-of-plane configurations. Our results indicate that the magnetization vector can rotate in the film plane as well as out of the film plane by changing the intensity of external magnetic field of certain direction. The magnetization characteristic can be explained by considering demagnetization and magnetic anisotropy. Our method can be used to obtain the demagnetization factor, saturated magnetic moment and the magnetic anisotropy.

Electrical Detection of Spin Wave Resonance in a Permalloy Thin Strip

We investigated the microwave-induced DC response of spin wave resonance (SWR) in a permalloy thin strip via electrical detection. Our experimental results obtained by sweeping the external field reveal that: 1. the amplitude of SWR signals depend on the direction of external field and, 2. unlike the DC response of ferromagnetic resonance, SWR spectra are always anti-symmetrical. The spin dynamics are discussed based on these unusual signals in resonant condition.
