Perturbations of Kantowski-Sachs models

Perturbations of Kantowski-Sachs models with a positive cosmological constant are considered in a harmonic decomposition, in the framework of gauge invariant 1+3 and 1+1+2 covariant splits of spacetime. Scalar, vector and tensor modes are allowed, however they remain vorticity-free and of perfect fluid type. The dynamics is encompassed in six evolution equations for six harmonic coefficients.

Bose-Einstein condensate dark matter model tested by galactic rotation curves

Rotation curves of spiral galaxies are fundamental tools in the study of dark matter. Here we test the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) dark matter model against rotation curve data of High and Low Surface Brightness (HSB and LSB) galaxies, respectively. When the rotational velocities increase over the whole observed range, the fit of the BEC model is similar to the one of the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) dark matter model. When however the rotation curves exhibit long flat regions, the NFW profiles provide a slightly better fit.

Gravitational waveforms for unequal mass black hole binaries detectable by KAGRA

Gravitational waveforms generated by unequal mass black hole binaries are expected to be common sources for future gravitational wave detectors. We derived the waveforms emitted by such systems during the last part of the inspiral, when the larger spin dominates over the orbital angular momentum and the smaller spin is negligible. These Spin-Dominated Waveforms (SDW) arise as a double expansion in the post-Newtonian parameter and another parameter proportional to the ratio of the orbital angular momentum and the dominant spin. The time spent by the gravitational wave as an SDW in the sensitivity range of the KAGRA detector is presented for the first time.

Spin-dominated waveforms for unequal mass compact binaries

We derive spin-dominated waveforms (SDW) for binary systems composed of spinning black holes with unequal masses (less than 1:30). Such systems could be formed by an astrophysical black hole with a smaller black hole or a neutron star companion; and typically arise for supermassive black hole encounters. SDW characterize the last stages of the inspiral, when the larger spin dominates over the orbital angular momentum (while the spin of the smaller companion can be neglected). They emerge as a double expansion in the post-Newtonian parameter $\varepsilon$ and the ratio $ξ$ of the orbital angular momentum and dominant spin. The SDW amplitudes are presented to ($\varepsilon^{3/2},ξ$) orders, while the phase of the gravitational waves to ($\varepsilon^{2},ξ$) orders (omitting the highest order mixed terms). To this accuracy the amplitude includes the (leading order) spin-orbit contributions, while the phase the (leading order) spin-orbit, self-spin and mass quadrupole-monopole contributions. While the SDW hold for any mass ratio smaller than 1:30, lower bounds for the mass ratios are derived from the best sensitivity frequency range expected for Advanced LIGO (giving 1:140), the Einstein Telescope ($7\times 10^{-4}$), the LAGRANGE ($7\times 10^{-7}$) and LISA missions ($7\times 10^{-9}$), respectively.

Modified gravity theories and dark matter models tested by galactic rotation curves

Bose-Einstein condensate dark matter model and Randall-Sundrum type 2 brane-world theory are tested with galactic rotation curves. Analytical expressions are derived for the rotational velocities of test particles around the galactic center in both cases. The velocity profiles are fitted to the observed rotation curve data of high surface brightness and low surface brightness galaxies. The brane-world model fits better the rotation curves with asymptotically flat behaviour.

Gravitational waveforms for black hole binaries with unequal masses

We derived a post-Newtonian (PN) inspiral only gravitational waveform for unequal mass, spinning black hole binaries. Towards the end of the inspiral the larger spin dominates over the orbital angular momentum (while the smaller spin is negligible), hence the name Spin-Dominated Waveforms (SDW). Such systems are common sources for future gravitational wave detectors and during the inspiral the largest amplitude waves are emitted exactly in its last part. The SDW waveforms emerge as a double expansion in the PN parameter and the ratio of the orbital angular momentum to the dominant spin.

The paradox of soft singularity crossing and its resolution by distributional cosmological quantitities

A cosmological model of a flat Friedmann universe filled with a mixture of anti-Chaplygin gas and dust-like matter exhibits a future soft singularity, where the pressure of the anti-Chaplygin gas diverges (while its energy density is finite). Despite infinite tidal forces the geodesics pass through the singularity. Due to the dust component, the Hubble parameter has a non-zero value at the encounter with the singularity, therefore the dust implies further expansion. With continued expansion however, the energy density and the pressure of the anti-Chaplygin gas would become ill-defined, hence from the point of view of the anti-Chaplygin gas only a contraction is allowed. Paradoxically, the universe in this cosmological model would have to expand and contract simultaneously. This obviosly could not happen. We solve the paradox by redefining the anti-Chaplygin gas in a distributional sense. Then a contraction could follow the expansion phase at the singularity at the price of a jump in the Hubble parameter. Although such an abrupt change is not common in any cosmological evolution, we explicitly show that the set of Friedmann, Raychaudhuri and continuity equations are all obeyed both at the singularity and in its vicinity. We also prove that the Israel junction conditions are obeyed through the singular spatial hypersurface. In particular we enounce and prove a more general form of the Lanczos equation.

Density growth in Kantowski-Sachs cosmologies with cosmological constant

In this work the growth of density perturbations in Kantowski-Sachs cosmologies with a positive cosmological constant is studied, using the 1+3 and 1+1+2 covariant formalisms. For each wave number we obtain a closed system for scalars formed from quantities that are zero on the background and hence are gauge-invariant. The solutions to this system are then analyzed both analytically and numerically. In particular the effects of anisotropy and the behaviour close to a bounce in the cosmic scale factor are considered. We find that typically the density gradient in the bouncing directions experiences a local maximum at or slightly after the bounce.

Constraining Hořava-Lifshitz gravity by weak and strong gravitational lensing

We discuss gravitational lensing in the Kehagias-Sfetsos space-time emerging in the framework of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. In weak lensing we show that there are three regimes, depending on the value of $\bar λ=1/ωd^{2}$, where $ω$ is the Hořava-Lifshitz parameter and $d$ characterizes the lensing geometry. When $\bar λ$ is close to zero, light deflection typically produces two images, as in Schwarzschild lensing. For very large $\bar λ$ the space-time approaches flatness, therefore there is only one undeflected image. In the intermediate range of $\bar λ$ only the upper focused image is produced due to the existence of a maximal deflection angle $δ_{max}$, a feature inexistent in the Schwarzschild weak lensing. We also discuss the location of Einstein rings, and determine the range of the Hořava-Lifshitz parameter compatible with present day lensing observations. Finally, we analyze in the strong lensing regime the first two relativistic Einstein rings and determine the constraints on the parameter range to be imposed by forthcoming experiments.

Will the tachyonic Universe survive the Big Brake?

We investigate a Friedmann universe filled with a tachyon scalar field, which behaves as dustlike matter in the past, while it is able to accelerate the expansion rate of the universe at late times. The comparison with type Ia supernovae (SNIa) data allows for evolutions driving the universe into a Big Brake. Some of the evolutions leading to a Big Brake exhibit a large variation of the equation of state parameter at low redshifts which is potentially observable with future data though hardly detectable with present SNIa data. The soft Big Brake singularity occurs at finite values of the scale factor, vanishing energy density and Hubble parameter, but diverging deceleration and infinite pressure. We show that the geodesics can be continued through the Big Brake and that our model universe will recollapse eventually in a Big Crunch. Although the time to the Big Brake strongly depends on the present values of the tachyonic field and of its time derivative, the time from the Big Brake to the Big Crunch represents a kind of invariant timescale for all field parameters allowed by SNIa.

Recovering a spinning inspiralling compact binary waveform immersed in LIGO-like noise with spinning templates

We investigate the recovery chances of highly spinning waveforms immersed in LIGO S5-like noise by performing a matched filtering with 10^6 randomly chosen spinning waveforms generated with the LAL package. While the masses of the compact binary are reasonably well recovered (slightly overestimated), the same does not hold true for the spins. We show the best fit matches both in the time-domain and the frequency-domain. These encompass some of the spinning characteristics of the signal, but far less than what would be required to identify the astrophysical parameters of the system. An improvement of the matching method is necessary, though may be difficult due to the noisy signal.

Covariant gravitational dynamics in 3+1+1 dimensions

We develop a 3+1+1 covariant formalism with cosmological and astrophysical applications. First we give the evolution and constraint equations both on the brane and off-brane in terms of 3-space covariant kinematical, gravito-electro-magnetic (Weyl) and matter variables. We discuss the junction conditions across the brane in terms of the new variables. Then we establish a closure condition for the equations on the brane. We also establish the connection of this formalism with isotropic and anisotropic cosmological brane-worlds. Finally we derive a new brane solution in the framework of our formalism: the tidal charged Taub-NUT-(A)dS brane, which obeys the closure condition.

Secular momentum transport by gravitational waves from spinning compact binaries

We present a closed system of coupled first order differential equations governing the secular linear momentum loss of a compact binary due to emitted gravitational waves, with the leading order relativistic and spin-orbit perturbations included. In order to close the system, the secular evolution equations of the linear momentum derived from the dissipative dynamics are supplemented with the secular evolutions of the coupled angular variables, as derived from the conservative dynamics.

Renormalized spin coefficients in the accumulated orbital phase for unequal mass black hole binaries

We analyze galactic black hole mergers and their emitted gravitational waves. Such mergers have typically unequal masses with mass ratio of the order 1/10. The emitted gravitational waves carry the inprint of spins and mass quadrupoles of the binary components. Among these contributions, we consider here the quasi-precessional evolution of the spins. A method of taking into account these third post-Newtonian (3PN) effects by renormalizing (redefining) the 1.5 PN and 2PN accurate spin contributions to the accumulated orbital phase is developed.

Second-order light deflection by tidal charged black holes on the brane

We derive the deflection angle of light rays passing near a black hole with mass m and tidal charge q, confined to a generalized Randall-Sundrum brane with codimension one. We employ the weak lensing approach, up to the second order in perturbation theory by two distinct methods. First we adopt a Lagrangian approach and derive the deflection angle from the analysis of the geodesic equations. Then we adopt a Hamiltonian approach and we recover the same result from the analysis of the eikonal. With this we re-establish the unicity of the result as given by the two methods. Our results in turn implies a more rigurous constraint on the tidal charge from Solar System measurements, then derived before.

On the validity of the 5-dimensional Birkhoff theorem: The tale of an exceptional case

The 5-dimensional (5d) Birkhoff theorem gives the class of 5d vacuum space-times containing spatial hypersurfaces with cosmological symmetries. This theorem is violated by the 5d vacuum Gergely-Maartens (GM) space-time, which is not a representant of the above class, but contains the static Einstein brane as embedded hypersurface. We prove that the 5d Birkhoff theorem is still satisfied in a weaker sense: the GM space-time is related to the degenerated horizon metric of certain black-hole space-times of the allowed class. This result resembles the connection between the Bertotti-Robinson space-time and the horizon region of the extremal Reissner-Nordstrom space-time in general relativity.

The luminosity-redshift relation in brane-worlds: II. Confrontation with experimental data

The luminosity distance - redshift relation for a wide class of generalized Randall-Sundrum type II brane-world models with Weyl fluid is compared to the presently available supernova data. We find that there is a class of spacially flat models with different amounts of matter $Ω_ρ$ and Weyl fluid $Ω_{d}$, which have a very similar fitting quality. The best-fit models are equally likely and can be regarded as extensions of the $Λ$CDM model, which is also included. We examine three models with different evolutionary history of the Weyl fluid, characterized by a parameter $α=0,~2$ and$~3$. The first model describes a brane which had radiated energy into the bulk some time ago, but in recent times this energy exchange has ceased and only a dark radiation ($α=0$) is left. In the other two models the Weyl-fluid describes a radiating brane throughout the cosmological evolution, up to our days. We find that the trought of the fitting surface extends over a wider $Ω_{d}$-range with increasing $α$, but the linear correlation of $Ω_{d}$ and $Ω_ρ$ holds all over the examined $Ω_{d}$ range.
