The luminosity-redshift relation in brane-worlds: I. Analytical results

The luminosity distance - redshift relation is analytically given for generalized Randall-Sundrum type II brane-world models containing dark radiation. The derived expressions contain both elementary functions and elliptic integrals of the first and second kind. First we derive the relation for models with the Randall-Sundrum fine-tuning. Then we generalize the method for models with cosmological constant. The analytical results are suitable for testing brane-world models when future supernova data at higher redshifts will be available.

Cosmological tests of generalized RS brane-worlds with Weyl fluid

A class of generalized Randall-Sundrum type II (RS) brane-world models with Weyl fluid are confronted with the Gold supernovae data set and BBN constraints. We consider three models with different evolutionary history of the Weyl fluid, characterized by the parameter $α$. For $α=0$ the Weyl curvature of the bulk appears as dark radiation on the brane, while for $α=2$ and 3 the brane radiates, leaving a Weyl fluid on the brane with energy density decreasing slower than that of (dark) matter. In each case the contribution $Ω_d$ of the Weyl fluid represents but a few percent of the energy content of the Universe. All models fit reasonably well the Gold2006 data. The best fit model for $α=0$ is for $Ω_d=0.04$. In order to obey BBN constraints in this model however, the brane had to radiate at earlier times.

The second post-Newtonian order generalized Kepler equation

The radial component of the motion of compact binary systems composed of neutron stars and/or black holes on eccentric orbit is integrated. We consider all type of perturbations that emerge up to second post-Newtonian order. These perturbations are either of relativistic origin or are related to the spin, mass quadrupole and magnetic dipole moments of the binary components. We derive a generalized Kepler equation and investigate its domain of validity, in which it properly describes the radial motion.

Generalized eccentric vs. true anomaly parametrizations in the perturbed Keplerian motion

The angular and the radial parts of the dynamics of the perturbed Kepler motion are separable in many important cases. In this paper we study the radial motion and its parametrizations. We develop in detail a generalized eccentric anomaly parametrization and a procedure of computing a generic class of integrals based on the residue theorem. We apply the formalism to determine various contributions to the luminosity of a compact binary.

Kepler Equation for the Compact Binaries under the Spin-spin Interaction

In this work we consider compact binaries on eccentric orbit under the spin-spin interaction. Using the post-Newtonian formalism, the binaries undergo a perturbed Keplerian motion. Here we investigate only the radial motion and derive the contribution of the second post-Newtonian order spin-spin effect to the solution.

Irradiated closed Friedmann brane-worlds

We consider the evolution of a closed Friedmann brane irradiated by a bulk black hole. Both absorption on the brane and transmission across the brane are allowed, the latter representing a generalization over a previously studied model. Without transmission, a critical behaviour could be observed, when the acceleration due to radiation pressure and the deceleration introduced by the increasing self-gravity of the brane roughly compensate each other. We show here that increasing transmission leads to the disappearance of the critical behaviour.

An Efficient Method for the Evaluation of Secular Effects in the Perturbed Keplerian Motion

Binary systems subject to generic perturbations evolve on quasiperiodic orbits. We derive the most generic class of perturbations, which allow to evaluate secular effects via generalized complex true and eccentric anomaly parameters, by use of the residue theorem. Such perturbations include both the generic Brumberg force and various linear contributions to the conservative dynamics of compact binaries, up to the second post-Newtonian order. As an example, we compute the self-spin contribution to the luminosity due to gravitational radiation of a compact binary consisting of galactic black holes, the most important type of source for LISA. This translates to simply calculate the residue of the instantaneous energy loss in the origin of the complex parameter plane, which illustrates the power of the presented method.

On the luminosity-redshift relation in brane-worlds with cosmological constant

In this paper we calculate the luminosity distance - redshift relation for a special type of flat Friedmann brane with cosmological constant. This special case is singled out by its simplicity, the luminosity distance being given in terms of elementary functions. We compare our analytical result with the expresssion of the luminosity distance for the flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) universe and discuss the differences.

Semi-transparent brane-worlds

We study the evolution of a closed Friedmann brane perturbed by the Hawking radiation escaping a bulk black hole. The semi-transparent brane absorbes some of the infalling radiation, the rest being transmitted across the brane to the other bulk region. We characterize the cosmological evolution in terms of the transmission rate $ε$. For small values of $ε$ a critical-like behaviour could be observed, when the acceleration due to radiation pressure and the deceleration induced by the increasing self-gravity of the brane roughly compensate each other, and cosmological evolution is approximately the same as without radiation. Lighter (heavier) branes than those with the critical energy density will recollapse slower (faster). This feature is obstructed at high values of $ε$, where the overall effect of the radiation is to speed-up the recollapse. We determine the maximal value of the transmission rate for which the critical-like behaviour is observed. We also study the effect of transmission on the evolution of different source terms of the Friedmann equation. We conclude that among all semi-transparent branes the slowest recollapse occurs for light branes with total absorption.

Irradiated asymmetric Friedmann branes

We consider a Friedmann brane moving in a bulk impregnated by radiation. The setup is strongly asymmetric, with only one black hole in the bulk. The radiation emitted by this bulk black hole can be reflected, absorbed or transmitted through the brane. Radiation pressure accelerates the brane, behaving as dark energy. Absorption however generates a competing effect: the brane becomes heavier and gravitational attraction increases. We analyse the model numerically, assuming a total absorbtion on the brane for k=1. We conclude that due to the two competing effects, in this asymmetric scenario the Hawking radiation from the bulk black hole is not able to change the recollapsing fate of this brane-world universe. We show that for light branes and early times the radiation pressure is the dominant effect. In contrast, for heavy branes the self-gravity of the absorbed radiation is a much stronger effect. We find the critical value of the initial energy density for which these two effects roughly cancel each other.

The Kepler equation for inspiralling compact binaries

Compact binaries consisting of neutron stars / black holes on eccentric orbit undergo a perturbed Keplerian motion. The perturbations are either of relativistic origin or are related to the spin, mass quadrupole and magnetic dipole moments of the binary components. The post-Newtonian motion of such systems decouples into radial and angular parts. We present here for the first time the radial motion of such a binary encoded in a generalized Kepler equation, with the inclusion of all above-mentioned contributions, up to linear order in the perturbations. Together with suitably introduced parametrizations, the radial motion is solved completely.

Gravitational radiation reaction in compact binary systems: Contribution of the magnetic dipole-magnetic dipole interaction

We study the gravitational radiation reaction in compact binary systems composed of neutron stars with spin and huge magnetic dipole moments (magnetars). The magnetic dipole moments undergo a precessional motion about the respective spins. At sufficiently high values of the magnetic dipole moments, their interaction generates second post-Newtonian order contributions both to the equations of motion and to the gravitational radiation escaping the system. We parametrize the radial motion and average over a radial period in order to find the secular contributions to the energy and magnitude of the orbital angular momentum losses, in the generic case of \textit{eccentric} orbits. Similarly as for the spin-orbit, spin-spin, quadrupole-monopole interactions, here too we deduce the secular evolution of the relative orientations of the orbital angular momentum and spins. These equations, supplemented by the evolution equations for the angles characterizing the orientation of the dipole moments form a first order differential system, which is closed. The circular orbit limit of the energy loss agrees with Ioka and Taniguchi's earlier result.

Gravitational radiation reaction in compact binary systems: Contribution of the quadrupole-monopole interaction

The radiation reaction in compact spinning binaries on eccentric orbits due to the quadrupole-monopole interaction is studied. This contribution is of second post-Newtonian order. As result of the precession of spins the magnitude $L$ of the orbital angular momentum is not conserved. Therefore a proper characterization of the perturbed radial motion is provided by the energy $E$ and angular average $\bar{L}$. As powerful computing tools, the generalized true and eccentric anomaly parametrizations are introduced. Then the secular losses in energy and magnitude of orbital angular momentum together with the secular evolution of the relative orientations of the orbital angular momentum and spins are found for eccentric orbits by use of the residue theorem. The circular orbit limit of the energy loss agrees with Poisson's earlier result.
