Comparison of Gini means with fixed number of variables

In this paper, we consider the global comparison problem of Gini means with fixed number of variables on a subinterval $I$ of $\mathbb{R}_+$, i.e., the following inequality \begin{align}\tag{$\star$}\label{ggcabs} G_{r,s}^{[n]}(x_1,\dots,x_n) \leq G_{p,q}^{[n]}(x_1,\dots,x_n), \end{align} where $n\in\mathbb{N},n\geq2$ is fixed, $(p,q),(r,s)\in\mathbb{R}^2$ and $x_1,\dots,x_n\in I$. Given a nonempty subinterval $I$ of $\mathbb{R}_+$ and $n\in\mathbb{N}$, we introduce the relations \[ Γ_n(I):=\{((r,s),(p,q))\in\mathbb{R}^2\times\mathbb{R}^2\mid \eqref{ggcabs}\mbox{ holds for all } x_1,\dots,x_n\in I\},\qquad Γ_\infty(I):=\bigcap_{n=1}^\inftyΓ_n(I). \] In the paper, we investigate the properties of these sets and their dependence on $n$ and on the interval $I$ and we establish a characterizations of these sets via a constrained minimum problem by using a variant of the Lagrange multiplier rule. We also formulate two open problems at the end of the paper.

Cauchy--Schwarz-type inequalities for additive functions

The main goal of this paper is to show that if a real valued function defined on a groupoid satisfies a certain Levi--Civita-type functional equation, then it also fulfills a Cauchy--Schwarz-type functional inequality. In particular, if the groupoid is the multiplicative structure of commutative ring, then we can establish the existence of nontrivial additive functions satisfying inequalities connected to the multiplicative structure.

Estimating the Hardy constant of nonconcave homogenus quasideviation means

In this paper, we consider homogeneous quasideviation means generated by real functions (defined on $(0,\infty)$) which are concave around the point $1$ and possess certain upper estimates near $0$ and $\infty$. It turns out that their concave envelopes can be completely determined. Using this description, we establish sufficient conditions for the Hardy property of the homogeneous quasideviation mean and we also furnish an upper estimates for its Hardy constant.

On convexity properties with respect to a Chebyshev system

The main purpose of this paper is to introduce various convexity concepts in terms of a positive Chebyshev system $ω$ and give a systematic investigation of the relations among them. We generalize a celebrated theorem of Bernstein--Doetsch to the setting of $ω$-Jensen convexity. We also give sufficient conditions for the existence of discontinuous $ω$-Jensen affine functions. The concept of Wright convexity is extended to the setting of Chebyshev systems, as well, and it turns out to be an intermediate convexity property between $ω$-convexity and $ω$-Jensen convexity. For certain Chebyshev systems, we generalize the decomposition theorems of Wright convex and higher-order Wright convex functions obtained by C.\ T.\ Ng in 1987 and by Maksa and Páles in 2009, respectively.

On the invariance of the arithmetic mean with respect to generalized Bajraktarević means

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the following invariance equation involving two $2$-variable generalized Bajraktarević means, i.e., we aim to solve the functional equation $$ f^{-1}\bigg(\frac{p_1(x)f(x)+p_2(y)f(y)}{p_1(x)+p_2(y)}\bigg)+g^{-1}\bigg(\frac{q_1(x)g(x)+q_2(y)g(y)}{q_1(x)+q_2(y)}\bigg)=x+y \qquad(x,y\in I), $$ where $I$ is a nonempty open real interval and $f,g:I\to\mathbb{R}$ are continuous, strictly monotone and $p_1,p_2,q_1,q_2:I\to\mathbb{R}_+$ are unknown functions. The main result of the paper shows that, assuming four times continuous differentiability of $f$, $g$, twice continuous differentiability of $p_1$ and $p_2$ and assuming that $p_1$ differs from $p_2$ on a dense subset of $I$, a necessary and sufficient condition for the equality above is that the unknown functions are of the form $$ f=\frac{u}{v},\qquad g=\frac{w}{z},\qquad \mbox{and}\qquad p_1q_1=p_2q_2=vz, $$ where $u,v,w,z:I\to\mathbb{R}$ are arbitrary solutions of the second-order linear differential equation $F''=γF$ ($γ\in\mathbb{R}$ is arbitrarily fixed) such that $v>0$ and $z>0$ holds on $I$ and $\{u,v\}$ and $\{w,z\}$ are linearly independent.

Local and global comparison of generalized Bajraktarević means

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the local and global comparison of two $n$-variable generalized Bajraktarević means, i.e., to establish necessary as well as sufficient conditions in terms of the unknown functions $f,g,p_1,\dots,p_n,q_1,\dots,q_n:I\to\mathbb{R}$ for the comparison inequality $$ f^{-1}\bigg(\frac{p_1(x_1)f(x_1)+\cdots+p_n(x_n)f(x_n)}{p_1(x_1)+\cdots+p_n(x_n)}\bigg)\leq g^{-1}\bigg(\frac{q_1(x_1)g(x_1)+\cdots+q_n(x_n)g(x_n)}{q_1(x_1)+\cdots +q_n(x_n)}\bigg) $$ in local and global sense. Here $I$ is a nonempty open real interval, $x_1,\dots,x_n\in I$, and $f,g$ is assumed to be continuous, strictly monotone and $p_1,\dots,p_n,q_1,\dots,q_n:I\to\mathbb{R}_+$ are positive valued. Concerning the global comparison problem, the main result of the paper states that if $f,g$ are differentiable functions with nonvanishing first derivatives and, for all $i\in\{1,\dots,n\}$, $$ \frac{p_i}{p_0}=\frac{q_i}{q_0} \qquad\mbox{and}\qquad \frac{p_0(x)(f(x)-f(y))}{p_0(y)f'(y)} \leq\frac{q_0(x)(g(x)-g(y))}{q_0(y)g'(y)}\qquad(x,y\in I) $$ are satisfied (where $p_0:=p_1+\dots+p_n$ and $q_0:=q_1+\dots+q_n$), then the above comparison inequality holds for all $x_1,\dots,x_n\in I$.

On the Jensen convexity of quasideviation and Bajraktarević means

Motivated by the characterization theorem about the Jensen convexity of quasiarithmetic means obtained by the authors in 2021, our main goal is to establish a characterization of the Jensen convexity of quasideviation as well as of Bajraktarević means without any additional and unnatural regularity assumptions.

Limit theorems for deviation means of independent and identically distributed random variables

We derive a strong law of large numbers, a central limit theorem, a law of the iterated logarithm and a large deviation theorem for so-called deviation means of independent and identically distributed random variables (for the strong law of large numbers, we suppose only pairwise independence instead of (total) independence). The class of deviation means is a special class of M-estimators or more generally extremum estimators, which are well-studied in statistics. The assumptions of our limit theorems for deviation means seem to be new and weaker than the known ones for M-estimators in the literature. Especially, our results on the strong law of large numbers and on the central limit theorem generalize the corresponding ones for quasi-arithmetic means due to de Carvalho (2016) and the ones for Bajraktarević means due to Barczy and Burai (2022).

A maximum theorem for generalized convex functions

Motivated by the Maximum Theorem for convex functions (in the setting of linear spaces) and for subadditive functions (in the setting of Abelian semigroups), we establish a Maximum Theorem for the class of generalized convex functions, i.e., for functions $f:X\to \mathbb{R}$ that satisfy the inequality $f(x\circ y)\leq pf(x)+qf(y)$, where $\circ$ is a binary operation on $X$ and $p,q$ are positive constants. As an application, we also obtain an extension of the Karush--Kuhn--Tucker theorem for this class of functions.

On convex and concave sequences and their applications

The aim of this paper is to introduce and to investigate the basic properties of $q$-convex, $q$-affine and $q$-concave sequences and to establish their surprising connection to Chebyshev polynomials of the first and of the second kind. One of the main results shows that $q$-concave sequences are the pointwise minima of $q$-affine sequences. As an application, we consider a nonlinear selfmap of the $n$-dimensional space and prove that it has a unique fixed point. For the proof of this result, we introduce a new norm on the space in terms of a $q$-concave sequence and show that the nonlinear operator becomes a contraction with respect to this norm, and hence, the Banach Fixed Point theorem can be applied.

Decomposition of higher-order Wright convex functions revisited

In 2009, Maksa and Páles established an extension of the decomposition theorem of Ng in the context of higher-order convexity notions. They proved that a real function is Wright convex of order $n$ if and only if it can be decomposed as the sum of a convex function of order $n$ and a polynomial function of order at most $n$. Their proof was based on transfinite tools in the background. The main purpose of this paper is to adopt the methods of a paper of Páles published in 2020 and establish a new and elementary proof for the theorem of Maksa and Páles.

On the equality problem of two-variable Bajraktarević means under first-order differentiability assumptions

The equality problem of the two-variable Bajraktarević means can be expressed as the functional equation $$ \left(\frac{f}{g}\right)^{-1}\bigg(\frac{f(x)+f(y)}{g(x)+g(y)}\bigg) =\left(\frac{h}{k}\right)^{-1}\bigg(\frac{h(x)+h(y)}{k(x)+k(y)}\bigg)\qquad(x,y\in I), $$ where $I$ is a nonempty open real interval, $f,g,h,k:I\to{\mathbb R}$ are continuous functions, $g$, $k$ are positive and $f/g$, $h/k$ are strictly monotone. This functional equation, for the first time, was solved by Losonczi in 1999 under 6th-order continuous differentiability assumptions. Additional and new characterizations of this equality problem have been found recently by Losonczi, Páles and Zakaria under the same regularity assumptions in 2021. In this paper it is shown that the same conclusion can be obtained under substantially weaker regularity conditions, namely, assuming only first-order differentiability.

Estimating the Hardy constant of nonconcave Gini means

The extension of the Hardy-Knopp-Carleman inequality to several classes of means was the subject of numerous papers. In the class of Gini means the Hardy property was characterized in 2015 by the second author. The precise value of the associated Hardy constant was only established for concave Gini means by the authors in 2016. The determination Hardy constant for nonconcave Gini means is still an open problem. The main goal of this paper is to establish sharper upper bounds for the Hardy constant in this case. The method is to construct a homogeneous and concave quasideviation mean which majorizes the nonconcave Gini mean and for which the Hardy constant can be computed.

Hutchinson's Theorem in Semimetric Spaces

One of the important consequences of the Banach Fixed Point Theorem is Hutchinson's theorem which states the existence and uniqueness of fractals in complete metric spaces. The aim of this paper is to extend this theorem for semimetric spaces using the results of Bessenyei and Páles published in 2017. In doing so, some properties of semimetric spaces as well as of the fractal space are investigated. We extend Hausdorff's theorem to characterize compactness and Blaschke's theorems to characterize the completeness of the fractal space. Based on these preliminaries, an analogue of Hutchinson's Theorem in the setting of semimetric spaces is proved and finally, error estimates and stability of fractals are established as well.

On approximately convex and affine functions

A real valued function $f$ defined on a real open interval $I$ is called $Φ$-convex if, for all $x,y\in I$, $t\in[0,1]$ it satisfies $$ f(tx+(1-t)y)\leq tf(x)+(1-t)f(y)+tΦ\big((1-t)|x-y|\big)+(1-t)Φ\big(t|x-y|\big), $$ where $Φ:\mathbb{R}_+\to\mathbb{R}_+$ is a nonnegative error function. If $f$ and $-f$ are simultaneously $Φ$-convex, then $f$ is said to be a $Φ$-affine function. In the main results of the paper, we describe the structural and inclusion properties of these two classes. We characterize these two classes of functions and investigate their relationship with approximately monotone and approximately-Hölder functions. We also introduce a subclass of error functions which enjoy the so-called $Γ$ property and we show that the error function which is the most optimal for a $Φ$-convex function has to belong to this subclass. The properties of this subclass of error function are investigated as well. Then we offer two formulas for the lower $Φ$-convex envelop. Besides, a sandwich type theorem is also added.

Characterizations of the equality of two-variable generalized quasiarithmetic means

This paper is motivated by an astonishing result of H. Alzer and S. Ruscheweyh published in 2001 in the Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., which states that the intersection of the classes two-variable Gini means and Stolarsky means is equal to the class of two-variable power means. The two-variable Gini and Stolarsky means form two-parameter classes of means expressed in terms of power functions. They can naturally be generalized in terms of the so-called Bajraktarević and Cauchy means. Our aim is to show that the intersection of these two classes of functional means, under high-order differentiability assumptions, is equal to the class of two-variable quasiarithmetic means.

An extension of the Rådström Cancellation Theorem to Cornets

The aim of this paper is to introduce the notion of cornets, which form a particular subclass of ordered semigroups also equipped with a multiplication by natural numbers. The most important standard examples for cornets are the families of the nonempty subsets and the nonempty fuzzy subsets of a vector space. In a cornet, the convexity, nonnegativity, Archimedean property, boundedness, closedness of an element can be defined naturally. The basic properties related to these notions are established. The main result extends the Cancellation Principle discovered by Rådström in 1952.
