On the Jensen convex and Jensen concave envelopes of means

In recent papers the convexity of quasiarithmetic means was characterized under twice differentiability assumptions. One of the main goals of this paper is to show that the convexity or concavity of a quasiarithmetic mean implies the the twice continuous differentiability of its generator. As a consequence of this result, we can characterize those quasiarithmetic means which admit a lower convex and upper concave quasiarithmetic envelop.

Characterization of approximately monotone and approximately Hölder functions

A real valued function $f$ defined on a real open interval $I$ is called $Φ$-monotone if, for all $x,y\in I$ with $x\leq y$ it satisfies $$ f(x)\leq f(y)+Φ(y-x), $$ where $Φ:[0,\ell(I)[\,\to\mathbb{R}_+$ is a given nonnegative error function, where $\ell(I)$ denotes the length of the interval $I$. If $f$ and $-f$ are simultaneously $Φ$-monotone, then $f$ is said to be a $Φ$-Hölder function. In the main results of the paper, using the notions of upper and lower interpolations, we establish a characterization for both classes of functions. This allows one to construct $Φ$-monotone and $Φ$-Hölder functions from elementary ones, which could be termed the building blocks for those classes. In the second part, we deduce Ostrowski- and Hermite--Hadamard-type inequalities from the $Φ$-monotonicity and $Φ$-Hölder properties, and then we verify the sharpness of these implications. We also establish implications in the reversed direction.

Decision making via generalized Bajraktarević means

We define decision-making functions which arise from studying the multidimensional generalization of the weighted Bajraktarević means. It allows a nonlinear approach to optimization problems. These functions admit several interesting (from the point of view of decision-making) properties, for example, delegativity (which states that each subgroup of decision-makers can aggregate their decisions and efforts), casuativity (each decision affects the final outcome except two trivial cases) and convexity-type properties. Beyond establishing the most important properties of such means, we solve their equality problem, we introduce a notion of synergy and characterize the null-synergy decision-making functions of this type.

On additive functions with additional derivation properties

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the notion of a generalized derivation which derivates a prescribed family of smooth vector-valued functions of several variables. The basic calculus rules are established and then a result derived which shows that if a function $f$ satisfies an addition theorem whose determining operation is derivable with respect to an additive function $d$, then the function $f$ is itself derivable with respect to $d$. As an application of this approach, new proof of a generalization of a recent result of Maksa is obtained. We also extend the result of Nishiyama and Horinouchi and formulate two open problems.

Applications of the Bielecki renorming technique

The renorming technique allows one to apply the Banach Contraction Principle for maps which are not contractions with respect to the original metric. This method was invented by Bielecki and manifested in an extremely elegant proof of the Global Existence and Uniqueness Theorem for ODEs. The present paper provides further extensions and applications of Bielecki's method to problems stemming from the theory of functional analysis and functional equations.

An elementary proof for the decomposition theorem of Wright convex functions

The main goal of this paper is to give a completely elementary proof for the decomposition theorem of Wright convex functions which was discovered by C.\ T.\ Ng in 1987. In the proof, we do not use transfinite tools, i.e., variants of Rodé's theorem, or de Bruijn's theorem related to functions with continuous differences.

On the equality of two-variable general functional means

Given two functions $f,g:I\to\mathbf{R}$ and a probability measure $μ$ on the Borel subsets of $[0,1]$, the two-variable mean $M_{f,g;μ}:I^2\to I$ is defined by $$ M_{f,g;μ}(x,y) :=\bigg(\frac{f}{g}\bigg)^{-1}\left( \frac{\int_0^1 f\big(tx+(1-t)y\big)dμ(t)} {\int_0^1 g\big(tx+(1-t)y\big)dμ(t)}\right) \qquad(x,y\in I). $$ This class of means includes quasiarithmetic as well as Cauchy and Bajraktarević means. The aim of this paper is, for a fixed probability measure $μ$, to study their equality problem, i.e., to characterize those pairs of functions $(f,g)$ and $(F,G)$ such that $$ M_{f,g;μ}(x,y)=M_{F,G;μ}(x,y) \qquad(x,y\in I) $$ holds. Under at most sixth-order differentiability assumptions for the unknown functions $f,g$ and $F,G$, we obtain several necessary conditions for the solutions of the above functional equation. For two particular measures, a complete description is obtained. These latter results offer eight equivalent conditions for the equality of Bajraktarević means and of Cauchy means.

Convexity properties of functions defined on metric Abelian groups

The notions of quasiconvexity, Wright convexity and convexity for functions defined on a metric Abelian group are introduced. Various characterizations of such functions, the structural properties of the functions classes so obtained are established and several well-known results are extended to this new setting.

Convexity of sets in metric Abelian groups

In the present paper, we introduce a new concept of convexity which is generated by a family of endomorphisms of an Abelian group. In Abelian groups equipped with a translation invariant metric, we define the boundedness, the norm, the measure of injectivity and the spectral radius of endomorphisms. Beyond the investigation of their properties, our first main goal is an extension of the celebrated Rådström Cancellation Theorem. Another result generalizes the Neumann Invertibility Theorem. Next we define the convexity of sets with respect to a family of endomorphisms and we describe the set-theoretical and algebraic structure of the class of such sets. Given a subset, we also consider the family of endomorphisms that make this subset convex and we establish the basic properties of this family. Our first main result establishes conditions which imply midpoint convexity. The next main result, using our extension of the Rådström Cancellation Theorem, presents further structural properties of the family of endomorphisms that make a subset convex.

New bounds for the ratio of power means

We show that for real numbers $p,\,q$ with $q<p$, and the related power means $\mathscr{P}_p$, $\mathscr{P}_q$, the inequality $$\frac{\mathscr{P}_p(x)}{\mathscr{P}_q(x)} \le \exp \bigg( \frac{p-q}8 \cdot \bigg(\ln\bigg(\frac{\max x}{\min x}\bigg)\bigg)^2 \:\bigg)$$ holds for every vector $x$ of positive reals. Moreover we prove that, for all such pairs $(p,q)$, the constant $\tfrac{p-q}8$ is sharp.

On Hardy type inequalities for weighted quasideviation means

Using recent results concerning the homogenization and the Hardy property of weighted means, we establish sharp Hardy constants for concave and monotone weighted quasideviation means and for a few particular subclasses of this broad family. More precisely, for a mean $\mathscr{D}$ like above and a sequence $(λ_n)$ of positive weights such that $λ_n/(λ_1+\dots+λ_n)$ is nondecreasing, we determine the smallest number $H \in (1,+\infty]$ such that $$ \sum_{n=1}^\infty λ_n \mathscr{D}\big((x_1,\dots,x_n),(λ_1,\dots,λ_n)\big) \le H \cdot \sum_{n=1}^\infty λ_n x_n \text{ for all }x \in \ell_1(λ). $$ It turns out that $H$ depends only on the limit of the sequence $(λ_n/(λ_1+\dots+λ_n))$ and the behaviour of the mean $\mathscr{D}$ near zero.

From the Ingham--Jessen property to mixed-mean inequalities

For every symmetric mean $\mathscr{M} \colon \bigcup_{n=1}^\infty I^n \to I$ (where $I$ an interval) and a nonzero function $W \colon \{1,\dots,n\} \to \mathbb{N} \cup \{0\}$, define an $n$-variable mean by $$\mathscr{M}_W(x):=\mathscr{M}\big(\underbrace{x_1,\dots,x_1}_{W(1)\text{-times}},\dots,\underbrace{x_n,\dots,x_n}_{W(n)\text{-times}}\big) \text{ for }x=(x_1,\dots,x_n) \in I^n.$$ Given two symmetric means $\mathscr{M},\,\mathscr{N} \colon \bigcup_{n=1}^\infty I^n \to I$ satisfying the so-called Ingham--Jessen inequality and some nonzero functions $F_1,\dots,F_k$, $G_1,\dots,G_l \colon \{1,\dots,n\} \to \mathbb{N} \cup \{0\}$, we establish sufficient conditions for inequalities of the form $$\mathscr{N} \big( \mathscr{M}_{F_1}(x),\dots,\mathscr{M}_{F_k}(x)\big) \le \mathscr{M} \big( \mathscr{N}_{G_1}(x),\dots,\mathscr{N}_{G_l}(x)\big) \qquad(x \in I^n).$$ Our results provide a unified approach to the celebrated inequalities obtained by Kedlaya in 1994 and by Leng--Si--Zhu in 2004 and offer also new families of mixed-mean inequalities.

On approximately monotone and approximately Hölder functions

In the main results of the paper, we describe structural properties of these function classes, determine the error function which is the most optimal one. We show that optimal error functions for $Φ$-monotonicity and $Φ$-Hölder property must be subadditive and absolutely subadditive, respectively. Then we offer a precise formula for the lower and upper $Φ$-monotone and $Φ$-Hölder envelopes. We also introduce a generalization of the classical notion of total variation and we prove an extension of the Jordan Decomposition Theorem known for functions of bounded total variations.

Characterization of the equality of Cauchy means to quasiarithmetic means

The main result of this paper provides six necessary and sufficient conditions under various regularity assumptions for a so-called Cauchy mean to be identical to a two-variable quasiarithmetic mean. One of these conditions says that a Cauchy mean is quasiarithmetic if and only if the range of its generating functions is covered by a nondegenerate conic section.

On the equality of Bajraktarević means to quasi-arithmetic means

This paper offers a solution of the functional equation $$ \big(tf(x)+(1-t)f(y)\big)φ(tx+(1-t)y)=tf(x)φ(x)+(1-t)f(y)φ(y) \qquad(x,y\in I), $$ where $t\in\,]0,1[\,$ is a fixed number, $φ:I\to\mathbb{R}$ is strictly monotone, and $f:I\to\mathbb{R}$ is an arbitrary unknown function. As an immediate application, we shed new light on the equality problem of Bajraktarević means with quasi-arithmetic means.

On the equality problem of generalized Bajraktarević means

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the equality problem of generalized Bajraktarević means, i.e., to solve the functional equation \begin{equation}\label{E0}\tag{*} f^{(-1)}\bigg(\frac{p_1(x_1)f(x_1)+\dots+p_n(x_n)f(x_n)}{p_1(x_1)+\dots+p_n(x_n)}\bigg)=g^{(-1)}\bigg(\frac{q_1(x_1)g(x_1)+\dots+q_n(x_n)g(x_n)}{q_1(x_1)+\dots+q_n(x_n)}\bigg), \end{equation} which holds for all $x=(x_1,\dots,x_n)\in I^n$, where $n\geq 2$, $I$ is a nonempty open real interval, the unknown functions $f,g:I\to\mathbb{R}$ are strictly monotone, $f^{(-1)}$ and $g^{(-1)}$ denote their generalized left inverses, respectively, and $p=(p_1,\dots,p_n):I\to\mathbb{R}_{+}^n$ and $q=(q_1,\dots,q_n):I\to\mathbb{R}_{+}^n$ are also unknown functions. This equality problem in the symmetric two-variable (i.e., when $n=2$) case was already investigated and solved under sixth-order regularity assumptions by Losonczi in 1999. In the nonsymmetric two-variable case, assuming three times differentiability of $f$, $g$ and the existence of $i\in\{1,2\}$ such that either $p_i$ is twice continuously differentiable and $p_{3-i}$ is continuous on $I$, or $p_i$ is twice differentiable and $p_{3-i}$ is once differentiable on $I$, we prove that \eqref{E0} holds if and only if there exist four constants $a,b,c,d\in\mathbb{R}$ with $ad\neq bc$ such that \begin{equation*} cf+d>0,\qquad g=\frac{af+b}{cf+d},\qquad\mbox{and}\qquad q_\ell=(cf+d)p_\ell\qquad (\ell\in\{1,\dots,n\}). \end{equation*} In the case $n\geq 3$, we obtain the same conclusion with weaker regularity assumptions. Namely, we suppose that $f$ and $g$ are three times differentiable, $p$ is continuous and there exist $i,j,k\in\{1,\dots,n\}$ with $i\neq j\neq k\neq i$ such that $p_i,p_j,p_k$ are differentiable.

On the homogenization of means

The aim of this paper is to introduce several notions of homogenization in various classes of weighted means, which include quasiarithmetic and semideviation means. In general, the homogenization is an operator which attaches a homogeneous mean to a given one. Our results show that, under some regularity or convexity assumptions, the homogenization of quasiarithmetic means are power means, and homogenization of semideviation means are homogeneous semideviation means. In other results, we characterize the comparison inequality, the Jensen concavity, and Minkowski- and Hölder-type inequalities related to semideviation means.

On a functional equation related to two-variable Cauchy means

In this paper, we are dealing with the solution of the functional equation $$ φ\Big(\frac{x+y}2\Big)(f(x)-f(y))=F(x)-F(y), $$ concerning the unknown functions $φ,f$ and $F$ defined on a same open subinterval of the reals. Improving the previous results related to this topic, we describe the solution triplets $(φ,f,F)$ assuming only the continuity of $φ$. As an application, under natural conditions, we also solve the equality problem of two-variable Cauchy means and two-variable quasi-arithmetic means.
