Fully Three-dimensional Simulation and Modeling of a Dense Plasma Focus

A Dense Plasma Focus (DPF) is a pulsed-power machine that electromagnetically accelerates and cylindrically compresses a shocked plasma in a Z-pinch. The pinch results in a brief (about 100 nanosecond) pulse of X-rays, and, for some working gases, also a pulse of neutrons. A great deal of experimental research has been done into the physics of DPF reactions, and there exist mathematical models describing its behavior during the different time phases of the reaction. Two of the phases, known as the inverse pinch and the rundown, are approximately governed by magnetohydrodynamics, and there are a number of well-established codes for simulating these phases in two dimensions or in three dimensions under the assumption of axial symmetry. There has been little success, however, in developing fully three-dimensional simulations. In this work we present three-dimensional simulations of DPF reactions and demonstrate that 3D simulations predict qualitatively and quantitatively different behavior than their 2D counterparts. One of the most important quantities to predict is the time duration between the formation of the gas shock and Z-pinch, and the 3D simulations more faithfully represent experimental results for this time duration and are essential for accurate prediction of future experiments.

Canard-induced mixed mode oscillations in an excitable glow discharge plasmas

We demonstrated experimentally canard induced mixed mode oscillations (MMO) in an excitable glow discharge plasma, and the results are validated through numerical solution of the FitzHugh Nagumo (FHN) model. When glow discharge plasma is perturbed by applying a magnetic field, it shows mixed mode oscillatory activity, i.e., quasiperiodic small oscillations interposed with large bounded limit cycles oscillations. The initial quasiperiodic oscillations were observed to change into large amplitude limit cycle oscillations with magnetic field, and the number of these oscillation increases with increase in the magnetic field. Fourier analysis of both numerical and experimental results show that the origin of these oscillations are canard-induced phenomena, which occurs near the threshold of the control parameter. Further, the phase space plots also confirm that the oscillations are basically canard-induced MMOs.

Plasma wave mediated electron pairing effects

Pairing of particles, in particular electrons, in high temperature plasma is generally not expected to occur. Here we investigate, based on earlier work, the possibility for electron pairing mediated in the presence of various kinds of plasma waves. We confirm the possibility for pairing in ion- and electron-acoustic waves, pointing out the importance of the former and the expected consequences. While electron-acoustic waves probably do not play any role, ion-acoustic waves may cause formation of heavy electron compounds. Lower hybrid waves also mediate pairing but under different conditions. Buneman modes which evolve from strong currents may cause pairing among trapped electrons constituting a heavy electron component that populates electron holes. All pairing processes are found to generate cold pair populations. They provide a mechanism of electron cooling which can be interpreted as kind of classical condensation, in some cases possibly accompanied by formation of current filaments, weak soft-X-ray emission and superfluidity which might affect reconnection physics.

Plasma wakefields driven by intense, broadband, incoherent electromagnetic radiation

Non-linear wave-driven processes in plasmas are normally described by either a monochromatic pump wave that couples to other monochromatic waves, or as a random phase wave coupling to other random phase waves. An alternative approach involves an incoherent, random or broadband pump coupling to monochromatic and/or coherent structures in the plasma. This approach can be implemented through the wave kinetic model. In this model, the incoming pump wave is described by either a bunch (for coherent waves) or a sea (for random phase waves) of quasi-particles. A particle-in-cell type code has been developed to perform numerical simulations of such interactions using the quasi-particle approach. This code allows for a comparatively easy description of both random phase and coherent pump pulses coupling to slow electrostatic plasma waves, while providing an extended range of powerful diagnostics leading to a deeper physical insight into the dynamics of the fast waves. As an example, the propagation of short, intense laser pulses through a plasma has been simulated. A sample of the phenomena that can be studied for this case includes modulational instabilities, photon wave breaking and turbulence, and pulse compression, stretching, and chirping. The extensibility of the numerical implementation to other types of fast wave-slow wave interactions is also discussed.

Exact solutions of macroscopic self-consistent electromagnetic fields and microscopic distribution of Vlasov-Maxwell system

Strict mathematics reveals that the strict solution of a Vlasov-Maxwell equation set cannot be of a zero-temperature mathematical form. This universal property of Vlasov-Maxwell system can lead to a closed equation set of three macroscopic quantities: selfconsistent fields E, B and fluid velocity u, and hence their exact solutions.Strict solution of microscoipc distribution governed by self-consistent electromagnetic fields is found to be a universal extension of well-known BGK mode, which corresponds to electrostatic case.

Tunable Electron Multibunch Production in Plasma Wakefield Accelerators

Synchronized, independently tunable and focused $μ$J-class laser pulses are used to release multiple electron populations via photo-ionization inside an electron-beam driven plasma wave. By varying the laser foci in the laboratory frame and the position of the underdense photocathodes in the co-moving frame, the delays between the produced bunches and their energies are adjusted. The resulting multibunches have ultra-high quality and brightness, allowing for hitherto impossible bunch configurations such as spatially overlapping bunch populations with strictly separated energies, which opens up a new regime for light sources such as free-electron-lasers.

Influence of small scale magnetic energy and helicity on the growth of large scale magnetic field

The influence of initially given small scale magnetic energy($E_M(0)$) and helicity($H_M(0)$) on the magnetohydrodynamics(MHD) dynamo was investigated. Equations for $E_M$(t), $H_M$(t), and electromotive force($\langle {\bf v}\times {\bf b}\rangle$, $EMF$) were derived and solved. The solutions indicate small scale magnetic field(${\bf b}_i$) caused by $E_M$(0) modifies $EMF$ and generates additional terms of which effect depends on magnetic diffusivity $η$, position of initial conditions($IC$s) $k_f$, and time ($\sim e^{-ηk_f^2 t}$). ${\bf b}_i$ increases the inverse cascade of energy resulting in the enhanced growth of large scale magnetic field($\overline{\bf B}$). Simulation data show that $E_M$(0) in small scale boosts the growth rate, which also proportionally depends on $H_M(0)$. If $E_M$(0) is the same, positive $H_M(0)$ is more effective for MHD dynamo than negative $H_M(0)$ is. It was discussed why large scale magnetic helicity should have the opposite sign of the injected kinetic helicity.

Nonlinear seed island generation by three-dimensional electromagnetic, gyrokinetic turbulence

Turbulence is shown to be critical to the onset and evolution of the neoclassical tearing mode, affecting both its growth and rotation. The interaction is here studied for the first time in the three dimensional, toroidal gyrokinetic framework. Turbulent fluctuations do not destroy the growing island early in its development, which maintains a coherent form as it grows, in fact the island is seeded and its rotation frequency determined, by nonlinear interaction. This process provides an initial structure that is of the order of an ion gyro-radius wide, allowing the island to rapidly reach a large size. A large degree of stochastisation around the seperatrix, and a complete breakdown of the X-point is seen, which significantly reduces the effective island width. A turbulent modification of the electrostatic field in and around the island greatly affects the size of the resonant layer width, and the island is seen to grow at the linear rate even though the island is significantly wider than the singular layer width.

Main Magnetic Focus Ion Trap, new tool for trapping of highly charged ions

It is proposed to produce the highly charged ions in the local ion trap formed by a rippling electron beam in the focusing magnetic field. The experimental results demonstrate the presence of iridium ions with charges up to 50+. According to estimates, the average electron current density in the local ion trap can reach the value of the order of 10 kA/cm^2. The pilot examples of devices of this type with the electron beam energies within the range 3-10 keV are also presented.

Intrinsic nonlinearity of interaction of an electromagnetic field with quantum plasma and its research

The analysis of nonlinear interaction of transversal electromagnetic field with quantum collisionless plasma is carried out. Formulas for calculation electric current in quantum collisionless plasma at any temperature are deduced. It has appeared, that the nonlinearity account leads to occurrence of the longitudinal electric current directed along a wave vector. This second current is orthogonal to the known transversal classical current, received at the classical linear analysis. The case of degenerate electronic plasma is considered. The concept of longitudinal-transversal conductivity is entered. The graphic analysis of the real and imaginary parts of dimensionless coefficient of longitudinal-transversal conductivity is made. It is shown, that for degenerate plasmas the electric current is calculated under the formula, not containing quadratures. In this formula we have allocated known Kohn's singularities (W. Kohn, 1959).

Kinetic description of wave induced plasma flow in the radio frequency domain

A model for ICRH induced flows in the presence of a strong magnetic field is presented. These flows are the finite temperature counterpart of flows existing in cold plasmas described e.g. in [D. Van Eester et al., Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 55 (2013) 025002] and thus do not rely on the waves being damped. The kinetic corrections offer insight in what happens at cyclotron resonances. Authors commonly either rely on the confining magnetic field $\vec{B}_o$-field to be strong, or the electric field $\vec{E}$-field to be rapidly varying but are not accounting for both when writing down the solution of the equation of motion on the slow time scale. In this paper, the equation of motion is solved for constant $B_o$ to keep the discussion as simple as possible. The simultaneous presence of $\vec{B}_o$ and the $\vec{E}$-field inhomogeneity causes drifts perpendicular to the $\vec{B}_o$ and to other slow time scale accelerations, the Ponderomotive acceleration being one of them. Because of the first and having tokamak applications in mind, these flows - although small in magnitude - cause drifts that enter in competition with transport induced flows.

Plasma Dispersion in Fractional-Dimension Space

The dielectric function for electron gas with parabolic energy bands is derived in a fractional dimensional space. The static response function shows a good dimensional dependance. The plasma frequencies are obtained from the roots of the dielectric functions. The plasma dispersion shows strong dimensional dependence. It is found that the plasma frequencies in the low dimensional systems are strongly dependent on the wave vector. It is weakly dependent in the three dimensional system and has a finite value at zero wave vector.

Scoping Studies for NBI Launch Geometries on DEMO

Scans of Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) tangency radii and elevation on two possible DEMO scenarios have been performed with two beam energies, 1.5MeV and 1.0MeV, in order to determine the most favourable options for Neutral Beam Current Drive (NBCD) efficiency. In addition, a method using a genetic algorithm has been used to seek optimised solutions of NBI source locations and powers to synthesize a target total plasma driven-current profile. It is found that certain beam trajectories may be proscribed by limitations on shinethrough onto the vessel wall. This may affect the ability of NBCD to extend the duration of a pulse in a scenario where it must complement the induced plasma current. Operating at the lower beam energy reduces the restrictions due to shinethrough and is attractive for technical reasons, but in the scenarios examined here this results in a spatial broadening of the NBCD profile, which may make it more challenging to achieve desired total driven-current profiles.

Generation of spherical and cylindrical shock acoustic waves from optical breakdown in water, stimulated with femtosecond pulse

Using shadow photography technique we have observed shock acoustic wave from optical breakdown, excited in water by tightly focused Cr:Forsterite femtosecond laser beam, and have found two different regimes of shock wave generation by varying only the energy of laser pulse. At low energies a single spherical shock wave is generated from laser beam waist, and its radius tends to saturation with energy increasing. At higher energies long laser filament in water is fired, that leads to the cylindrical shock wave generation, which longitude increases logarithmically with laser pulse energy. From shadow pictures we estimated maximal velocity in front or shock wave of 2300+/-150m/s and pressure of 1.0+/-0.1 GPa

Turbulence in two dimensional visco - elastic medium

The properties of decaying turbulence is studied with the help of a Generalized Hydrodynamic (GHD) fluid model in the context of two dimensional visco - elastic medium such as a strongly coupled dusty plasma system. For the incompressible case considered here however, the observations are valid for a wider class of visco - elastic systems not necessarily associated with plasmas only. Our observations show that an initial spectrum that is confined in a limited domain of wave numbers becomes broad, even when the Reynold's number is much less than the critical value required for the onset of turbulence in Newtonian fluids. This is a signature of elastic turbulence where Weissenberg's number also plays a role in the onset of turbulence. This has been reported in several experiments. It is also shown that the existence of memory relaxation time parameter and the transverse shear wave inhibit the normal process (for 2-D systems) of inverse spectral cascade in this case. A detailed simulation study has been carried out for the understanding of this inhibition.

Study of spin plasmons on the surface of a topological insulator based on spin quantum hydrodynamics

Starting from the Dirac equation, the relativistic quantum hydrodynamic equations for Dirac electrons on a surface of a three dimensional-topological insulator (TI) are derived and numerically solved to study the spin plasmons. The surface of the TI is modulated by a perpendicular magnetic field and a pulsed exchange field provided by an array of ferromagnetic insulating (FI) stripes. The collective density and velocity oscillations in the two-dimensional Dirac electron gas are simulated and analyzed. It is shown that in spin plasmons, the collective electron density and momentum are modulated by the spin state. Direct experimental observations of such oscillations are possible at laboratory conditions.

Enthalpic and entropic phase transitions in high energy density nuclear matter

Features of Gas-Liquid (GL) and Quark-Hadron (QH) phase transitions (PT) in dense nuclear matter are under discussion in comparison with their terrestrial counterparts, e.g. so-called "plasma" PT in shock-compressed hydrogen, nitrogen, xenon etc. Both, GLPT and QHPT, when being represented in widely accepted $T - μ$ diagram, are often considered as similar, i.e. amenable to one-to-one mapping by simple scaling. It is argued that this impression is illusive and that GLPT and QHPT belong to different classes: namely, GLPT is typical \emph{enthalpic} (VdW-like) PT while QHPT ("deconfinement-driven") is typical \emph{entropic} PT like hypothetical ionization- and dissociation-driven phase transitions in hot and dense hydrogen, nitrogen etc. of megabar pressure range. Newly introduced terms "enthalpic" and "entropic" PT, are defined and clarified in their illustrative comparison successively from $T - μ$ to $P - T$ and $P - V$ phase diagrams for GLPT and QHPT from one side (dense nuclear plasma) vs. GLPT and "plasma" (or "dissociative") PTs from another side (electromagnetic plasma). Fundamental difference in topology of binodal and spinodal curves for enthalpic and entropic phase transitions are discussed and illustrated. Multilayered structure of thermodynamic surfaces $T(P,V)$, $U(P,V)$, $S(P,V)$ etc. as basic origin for intrinsic anomalous properties of all entropic PTs, is stressed.
