Two-dimensional cellular automaton model of traffic flow with open boundaries

A two-dimensional cellular automaton model of traffic flow with open boundaries are investigated by computer simulations. The outflow of cars from the system and the average velocity are investigated. The time sequences of the outflow and average velocity have flicker noises in a jamming phase. The low density behavior are discussed with simple jam-free approximation.

Burgers' Flows as Markovian Diffusion Processes

We analyze the unforced and deterministically forced Burgers equation in the framework of the (diffusive) interpolating dynamics that solves the so-called Schrödinger boundary data problem for the random matter transport. This entails an exploration of the consistency conditions that allow to interpret dispersion of passive contaminants in the Burgers flow as a Markovian diffusion process. In general, the usage of a continuity equation $\partial_tρ=-\nabla (\vec{v}ρ)$, where $\vec{v}=\vec{v}(\vec{x},t)$ stands for the Burgers field and $ρ$ is the density of transported matter, is at variance with the explicit diffusion scenario. Under these circumstances, we give a complete characterisation of the diffusive transport that is governed by Burgers velocity fields. The result extends both to the approximate description of the transport driven by an incompressible fluid and to motions in an infinitely compressible medium. Also, in conjunction with the Born statistical postulate in quantum theory, it pertains to the probabilistic (diffusive) counterpart of the Schrödinger picture quantum dynamics.

Observation of stochastic coherence in coupled map lattices

Chaotic evolution of structures in Coupled map lattice driven by identical noise on each site is studied (a structure is a group of neighbouring lattice-sites for whom values of dynamical variable follow certain predefined pattern). Number of structures is seen to follow a power-law decay with length of the structure for a given noise-strength. An interesting phenomenon, which we call stochastic coherence, is reported in which a rise of bell-shaped type in abundance and lifetimes of these structures is observed for a range of noise-strength values.

Symmetries and Fixed Point Stability of Stochastic Differential Equations Modeling Self-Organized Criticality

A stochastic nonlinear partial differential equation is built for two different models exhibiting self-organized criticality, the Bak, Tang, and Wiesenfeld (BTW) sandpile model and the Zhang's model. The dynamic renormalization group (DRG) enables to compute the critical exponents. However, the nontrivial stable fixed point of the DRG transformation is unreachable for the original parameters of the models. We introduce an alternative regularization of the step function involved in the threshold condition, which breaks the symmetry of the BTW model. Although the symmetry properties of the two models are different, it is shown that they both belong to the same universality class. In this case the DRG procedure leads to a symmetric behavior for both models, restoring the broken symmetry, and makes accessible the nontrivial fixed point. This technique could also be applied to other problems with threshold dynamics.

Crossover to Self-Organized Criticality in an Inertial Sandpile Model

We introduce a one-dimensional sandpile model which incorporates particle inertia. The inertial dynamics are governed by a new parameter which, as it passes through a threshold value, alters the toppling dynamics in such a way that the system no longer evolves to a self-organized critical state. A range of mean-field theories based on a kinetic equation approach is presented which confirm the numerical findings. We conclude by considering the physical applications of this model, particularly with reference to recent experimental results.

Flame front propagation II: Random Noise and Pole-Dynamics in Unstable Front Propagation

The problem of flame propagation is studied as an example of unstable fronts that wrinkle on many scales is studied. The analytic tool of pole expansion in the complex plane is emloyed to address the interaction of the unstable growth process with random initial conditions and perturbations. We argue that the effect of random noise is immense and that it can never be neglected in sufficiently large systems. We present simulations that lead to scaling laws for the velocity and acceleration of the front as a function of the system size and the level of noise, and analytic arguments that explain these results in terms of the noisy pole dynamics.

Critical Dynamics of Self-Organizing Eulerian Walkers

The model of self-organizing Eulerian walkers is numerically investigated on the square lattice. The critical exponents for the distribution of a number of steps ($τ_l$) and visited sites ($τ_s$) characterizing the process of transformation from one recurrent configuration to another are calculated using the finite-size scaling analysis. Two different kinds of dynamical rules are considered. The results of simulations show that both the versions of the model belong to the same class of universality with the critical exponents $τ_l=τ_s=1.75\pm 0.1$.

A Monte Carlo Renormalization Group Approach to the Bak-Sneppen model

A recent renormalization group approach to a modified Bak-Sneppen model is discussed. We propose a self-consistency condition for the blocking scheme to be essential for a successful RG-method applied to self-organized criticality. A new method realizing the RG-approach to the Bak-Sneppen model is presented. It is based on the Monte-Carlo importance sampling idea. The new technique performs much faster than the original proposal. Using this technique we cross-check and improve previous results.

Energy flow, partial equilibration and effective temperatures in systems with slow dynamics

We show that, in nonequilibrium systems with small heat flows, there is a time-scale dependent effective temperature which plays the same role as the thermodynamical temperature, in that it controls the direction of heat flows and acts as a criterion for thermalization. We simultaneously treat the case of stationary systems with weak stirring and of glassy systems that age after cooling and show that they exhibit very similar behavior provided that time dependences are expressed in terms of the correlations of the system. We substantiate our claims with examples taken from solvable models with non-trivial low-temperature dynamics, but argue that they have a much wider range of validity. We suggest experimental checks of these ideas.

Algorithmic Mapping Criticality into Self Organized Criticality

Probabilistic cellular automata are prototypes of non equilibrium critical phenomena. This class of models includes among others the directed percolation problem (Domany Kinzel model) and the dynamical Ising model. The critical properties of these models are usually obtained by fine-tuning one or more control parameters, as for instance the temperature. We present a method for the parallel evolution of the model for all the values of the control parameter, although its implementation is in general limited to a fixed number of values. This algorithm facilitates the sketching of phase diagrams and can be useful in deriving the critical properties of the model. Since the criticality here emerges from the asymptotic distribution of some quantities, without tuning of parameters, our method is a mapping from a probabilistic cellular automaton with critical behavior to a self organized critical model with the same critical properties.

On-Line AdaTron Learning of Unlearnable Rules

We study the on-line AdaTron learning of linearly non-separable rules by a simple perceptron. Training examples are provided by a perceptron with a non-monotonic transfer function which reduces to the usual monotonic relation in a certain limit. We find that, although the on-line AdaTron learning is a powerful algorithm for the learnable rule, it does not give the best possible generalization error for unlearnable problems. Optimization of the learning rate is shown to greatly improve the performance of the AdaTron algorithm, leading to the best possible generalization error for a wide range of the parameter which controls the shape of the transfer function.)

The metastate approach to thermodynamic chaos

In realistic disordered systems, such as the Edwards-Anderson (EA) spin glass, no order parameter, such as the Parisi overlap distribution, can be both translation-invariant and non-self-averaging. The standard mean-field picture of the EA spin glass phase can therefore not be valid in any dimension and at any temperature. Further analysis shows that, in general, when systems have many competing (pure) thermodynamic states, a single state which is a mixture of many of them (as in the standard mean-field picture) contains insufficient information to reveal the full thermodynamic structure. We propose a different approach, in which an appropriate thermodynamic description of such a system is instead based on a metastate, which is an ensemble of (possibly mixed) thermodynamic states. This approach, modelled on chaotic dynamical systems, is needed when chaotic size dependence (of finite volume correlations) is present. Here replicas arise in a natural way, when a metastate is specified by its (meta)correlations. The metastate approach explains, connects, and unifies such concepts as replica symmetry breaking, chaotic size dependence and replica non-independence. Furthermore, it replaces the older idea of non-self-averaging as dependence on the bulk couplings with the concept of dependence on the state within the metastate at fixed coupling realization. We use these ideas to classify possible metastates for the EA model, and discuss two scenarios introduced by us earlier --- a nonstandard mean-field picture and a picture intermediate between that and the usual scaling/droplet picture.

Renormalization group of probabilistic cellular automata with one absorbing state

We apply a recently proposed dynamically driven renormalization group scheme to probabilistic cellular automata having one absorbing state. We have found just one unstable fixed point with one relevant direction. In the limit of small transition probability one of the cellular automata reduces to the contact process revealing that the cellular automata are in the same universality class as that process, as expected. Better numerical results are obtained as the approximations for the stationary distribution are improved.

A Simple Learning Algorithm for the Traveling Salesman Problem

We propose a learning algorithm for solving the traveling salesman problem based on a simple strategy of trial and adaptation: i) A tour is selected by choosing cities probabilistically according to the ``synaptic'' strengths between cities. ii) The ``synaptic'' strengths of the links that form the tour are then enhanced (reduced) if the tour length is shorter (longer) than the average result of the previous trials. We perform extensive simulations of the random distance traveling-salesman problem. For sufficiently slow learning rates, near optimal tours can be obtained with the average optimal tour lengths close to the lower bounds for the shortest tour lengths.

Ecological model of extinctions

We present numerical results based on a simplified ecological system in evolution, showing features of extinction similar to that claimed for the biosystem on Earth. In the model each species consists of a population in interaction with the others, that reproduces and evolves in time. Each species is simultaneously a predator and a prey in a food chain. Mutations that change the interactions are supposed to occur randomly at a low rate. Extinctions of populations result naturally from the predator-prey dynamics. The model is not pinned in a fitness variable, and natural selection arises from the dynamics.

First Order Nonequilibrium Phase Transition in a Spatially Extended System

We investigate a system of harmonically coupled identical nonlinear constituents subject to noise in different spatial arrangements. For global coupling we find for infinitely many constituents the coexistence of several ergodic components and a bifurcation behaviour like in first order phase transitions. These results are compared with simulations for finite systems both for global coupling and for nearest neighbour coupling on two- and three-dimensional cubic lattices. The mean-field type results for global coupling provide a better understanding of the more complex behaviour in the latter case.

Emergent spatial correlations in stochastically evolving populations

We study the spatial pattern formation and emerging long range correlations in a model of three species coevolving in space and time according to stochastic contact rules. Analytical results for the pair correlation functions, based on a truncation approximation and supported by computer simulations, reveal emergent strategies of survival for minority agents based on selection of patterns. Minority agents exhibit defensive clustering and cooperative behavior close to phase transitions.
