Spiral Motion in a Noisy Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation

The response of spiral waves to external perturbations in a stable regime of the two-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE) is investigated. It is shown that the spiral core has a finite mobility and performs Brownian motion when driven by white noise. Combined with simulation results, this suggests that defect-free and quasi-frozen states in the noiseless CGLE are unstable against free vortex excitation at any non-zero noise strength.

Thermal Fluctuations, Subcritical Bifurcation, and Nucleation of Localized States in Electroconvection

Measurements of the mean-square amplitude of thermally-induced fluctuations of a thin layer of the nematic liquid crystal I52 subjected to a voltage V < Vc are reported. They yield the limit of stability Vc of the spatially uniform conduction state to infinitesimal perturbations. Localized long-lived convecting structures known as worms form spontaneously from the fluctuations for V well below Vc. This, as well as measurements of the lifetime of the conduction state for V < Vc, suggests a thermally-activated mechanism of worm formation; but a theory for this non-potential system is lacking.

Efficient Computation of Dendritic Microstructures using Adaptive Mesh Refinement

We study dendritic microstructure evolution using an adaptive grid, finite element method applied to a phase-field model. The computational complexity of our algorithm, per unit time, scales linearly with system size, rather than the quadratic variation given by standard uniform mesh schemes. Time-dependent calculations in two dimensions are in good agreement with the predictions of solvability theory, and can be extended to three dimensions and small undercoolings

A Phase Front Instability in Periodically Forced Oscillatory Systems

Multiplicity of phase states within frequency locked bands in periodically forced oscillatory systems may give rise to front structures separating states with different phases. A new front instability is found within bands where $ω_{forcing}/ω_{system}=2n$ ($n>1$). Stationary fronts shifting the oscillation phase by $π$ lose stability below a critical forcing strength and decompose into $n$ traveling fronts each shifting the phase by $π/n$. The instability designates a transition from stationary two-phase patterns to traveling $n$-phase patterns.

The Viscous Nonlinear Dynamics of Twist and Writhe

Exploiting the "natural" frame of space curves, we formulate an intrinsic dynamics of twisted elastic filaments in viscous fluids. A pair of coupled nonlinear equations describing the temporal evolution of the filament's complex curvature and twist density embodies the dynamic interplay of twist and writhe. These are used to illustrate a novel nonlinear phenomenon: ``geometric untwisting" of open filaments, whereby twisting strains relax through a transient writhing instability without performing axial rotation. This may explain certain experimentally observed motions of fibers of the bacterium B. subtilis [N.H. Mendelson, et al., J. Bacteriol. 177, 7060 (1995)].

Continuum-type stability balloon in oscillated granular layers

The stability of convection rolls in a fluid heated from below is limited by secondary instabilities, including the skew-varicose and crossroll instabilities. We observe a stability boundary defined by the same instabilities in stripe patterns in a vertically oscillated granular layer. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the mechanism of the skew-varicose instability in granular patterns is similar to that in convection. These results suggest that pattern formation in granular media can be described by continuum models analogous to those used in fluid systems.

Localization of Waves without Bistability: Worms in Nematic Electroconvection

A general localization mechanism for waves in dissipative systems is identified that does not require the bistability of the basic state and the nonlinear plane-wave state. The mechanism explains the two-dimensional localized wave structures (`worms') that recently have been observed in experiments on electroconvection in nematic liquid crystals where the transition to extended waves is supercritical. The mechanism accounts for the propagation direction of the worms and certain aspects of their interaction. The dynamics of the localized waves can be steady or irregular.

Modulational instability of solitary waves in non-degenerate three-wave mixing: The role of phase symmetries

We show how the analytical approach of Zakharov and Rubenchik [Sov. Phys. JETP {\bf 38}, 494 (1974)] to modulational instability (MI) of solitary waves in the nonlinear Schröedinger equation (NLS) can be generalised for models with two phase symmetries. MI of three-wave parametric spatial solitons due to group velocity dispersion (GVD) is investigated as a typical example of such models. We reveal a new branch of neck instability, which dominates the usual snake type MI found for normal GVD. The resultant nonlinear evolution is thereby qualitatively different from cases with only a single phase symmetry.

Standing and Moving Gap Solitons in Resonantly Absorbing Gratings

We present hitherto unknown forms of soliton dynamics in the forbidden frequency gap of a Bragg reflector, modified by periodic layers of near-resonant two-level systems (TLS). Remarkably, even extremely low TLS densities create an allowed band within the forbidden gap. This spectrum gives rise, for any Bragg reflectivity, to a vast family of stable gap solitons, both standing and moving, having a unique analytic form, an arbitrary pulse area, and inelastic collision properties. These findings suggest new possibilities of transmission control, noise filtering or ``dynamical cavities'' (self-traps) for both weak and strong signal pulses.

Dynamics and Selection of Giant Spirals in Rayleigh-Benard Convection

For Rayleigh-Benard convection of a fluid with Prandtl number σ\approx 1, we report experimental and theoretical results on a pattern selection mechanism for cell-filling, giant, rotating spirals. We show that the pattern selection in a certain limit can be explained quantitatively by a phase-diffusion mechanism. This mechanism for pattern selection is very different from that for spirals in excitable media.

Tunable Pinning of Burst-Waves in Extended Systems with Discrete Sources

We study the dynamics of waves in a system of diffusively coupled discrete nonlinear sources. We show that the system exhibits burst waves which are periodic in a traveling-wave reference frame. We demonstrate that the burst waves are pinned if the diffusive coupling is below a critical value. When the coupling crosses the critical value the system undergoes a depinning instability via a saddle-node bifurcation, and the wave begins to move. We obtain the universal scaling for the mean wave velocity just above threshold.

Square patterns in Rayleigh-Benard convection with rotation about a vertical axis

We present experimental results for Rayleigh-Benard convection with rotation about a vertical axis at dimensionless rotation rates in the range 0 to 250 and upto 20% above the onset. Critical Rayleigh numbers and wavenumbers agree with predictions of linear stability analysis. For rotation rates greater than 70 and close to onset, the patterns are cellular with local four-fold coordination and differ from the theoretically expected Kuppers-Lortz unstable state. Stable as well as intermittent defect-free square lattices exist over certain parameter ranges. Over other ranges defects dynamically disrupt the lattice but cellular flow and local four-fold coordination is maintained.

Parametrically excited surface waves in magnetic fluids: observation of domain structures

Observations of parametrically excited surface waves in a magnetic fluid are presented. Under the influence of a magnetic field these waves have a non--monotonic dispersion relation, which leads to a richer behavior than in ordinary liquids. We report observation of three novel effects, namely: i) domain structures, ii) oscillating defects and iii) relaxational phase oscillations.

``Smoke Rings'' in Ferromagnets

It is shown that bulk ferromagnets support propagating non-linear modes that are analogous to the vortex rings, or ``smoke rings'', of fluid dynamics. These are circular loops of {\it magnetic} vorticity which travel at constant velocity parallel to their axis of symmetry. The topological structure of the continuum theory has important consequences for the properties of these magnetic vortex rings. One finds that there exists a sequence of magnetic vortex rings that are distinguished by a topological invariant (the Hopf invariant). We present analytical and numerical results for the energies, velocities and structures of propagating magnetic vortex rings in ferromagnetic materials.

Phase Diagram of Traffic States in the Presence of Inhomogeneities

We present a phase diagram of the different kinds of congested traffic that are triggered by disturbances when passing ramps or other spatial inhomogeneities of a freeway. The simulation results obtained by the nonlocal, gas-kinetic-based traffic model are in good agreement with empirical findigs. They allow to understand the observed trasitions between free and various kinds of congested traffic, among them localized clusters, stop-and-go waves, and different types of ``synchronized'' traffic. The proposed conditions for the existence of these states suggest that the phase diagram is universal for a class of different microscopic and macroscopic traffic models.

Circular Kinks on the Surface of Granular Material Rotated in a Tilted Spinning Bucket

We find that circular kinks form on the surface of granular material when the axis of rotation is tilted more than the angle of internal friction of the material. Radius of the kinks is measured as a function of the spinning speed and the tilting angle. Stability consideration of the surface results in an explanation that the kink is a boundary between the inner unstable and outer stable regions. A simple cellular automata model also displays kinks at the stability boundary.

Solitons on the edge of a two-dimensional electron system

We present a study of the excitations of the edge of a two-dimensional electron droplet in a magnetic field in terms of a contour dynamics formalism. We find that, beyond the usual linear approximation, the non-linear analysis yields soliton solutions which correspond to uniformly rotating shapes. These modes are found from a perturbative treatment of a non-linear eigenvalue problem, and as solutions to a modified Korteweg-de Vries equation resulting from a local induction approximation to the nonlocal contour dynamics. We discuss applications to the edge modes in the quantum Hall effect.

Controlled Dynamics of Interfaces in a Vibrated Granular Layer

We present experimental study of a topological excitation, {\it interface}, in a vertically vibrated layer of granular material. We show that these interfaces, separating regions of granular material oscillation with opposite phases, can be shifted and controlled by a very small amount of an additional subharmonic signal, mixed with the harmonic driving signal. The speed and the direction of interface motion depends sensitively on the phase and the amplitude of the subharmonic driving.
