Defect Chaos of Oscillating Hexagons in Rotating Convection

Using coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations, the dynamics of hexagonal patterns with broken chiral symmetry are investigated, as they appear in rotating non-Boussinesq or surface-tension-driven convection. We find that close to the secondary Hopf bifurcation to oscillating hexagons the dynamics are well described by a single complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE) coupled to the phases of the hexagonal pattern. At the bandcenter these equations reduce to the usual CGLE and the system exhibits defect chaos. Away from the bandcenter a transition to a frozen vortex state is found.

Pattern formation in inclined layer convection

We report experiments on thermally driven convection in an inclined layer of large aspect ratio in a fluid of Prandtl number $σ\approx 1$. We observed a number of new nonlinear, mostly spatio-temporally chaotic, states. At small angles of inclination we found longitudinal rolls, subharmonic oscillations, Busse oscillations, undulation chaos, and crawling rolls. At larger angles, in the vicinity of the transition from buoyancy- to shear-driven instability, we observed drifting transverse rolls, localized bursts, and drifting bimodals. For angles past vertical, when heated from above, we found drifting transverse rolls and switching diamond panes.

Discrete stochastic modeling of calcium channel dynamics

We propose a simple discrete stochastic model for calcium dynamics in living cells. Specifically, the calcium concentration distribution is assumed to give rise to a set of probabilities for the opening/closing of channels which release calcium thereby changing those probabilities. We study this model in one dimension, analytically in the mean-field limit of large number of channels per site N, and numerically for small N. As the number of channels per site is increased, the transition from a non-propagating region of activity to a propagating one changes in nature from one described by directed percolation to that of deterministic depinning in a spatially discrete system. Also, for a small number of channels a propagating calcium wave can leave behind a novel fluctuation-driven state, in a parameter range where the limiting deterministic model exhibits only single pulse propagation.

Anomalous resonance phenomena of solitary waves with internal modes

We investigate the non-parametric, pure ac driven dynamics of nonlinear Klein-Gordon solitary waves having an internal mode of frequency $Ω_i$. We show that the strongest resonance arises when the driving frequency $δ=Ω_i/2$, whereas when $δ=Ω_i$ the resonance is weaker, disappearing for nonzero damping. At resonance, the dynamics of the kink center of mass becomes chaotic. As we identify the resonance mechanism as an {\em indirect} coupling to the internal mode due to its symmetry, we expect similar results for other systems.

Time resolved pattern evolution in a large aperture laser

We have measured quasi-instantaneous transverse patterns in a broad aperture laser. Non-ordered patterns yielding to boundary determined regular structures in progressive time-integrated recording are observed. The linear analysis and numerical integration of the full Maxwell-Bloch equations allow us to interpret the features of the experiment. We show that this system being far from threshold cannot be fully understood with a perturbative model.

Dynamics of localized structures in vector waves

Dynamical properties of topological defects in a twodimensional complex vector field are considered. These objects naturally arise in the study of polarized transverse light waves. Dynamics is modeled by a Vector Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation with parameter values appropriate for linearly polarized laser emission. Creation and annihilation processes, and selforganization of defects in lattice structures, are described. We find "glassy" configurations dominated by vectorial defects and a melting process associated to topological-charge unbinding.

Dipole-Mode Vector Solitons

We find a new type of optical vector soliton that originates from trapping of a dipole mode by a soliton-induced waveguide. These solitons, which appear as a consequence of the vector nature of the two component system, are more stable than the previously found optical vortex-mode solitons and represent a new type of extremely robust nonlinear vector structure.

Dynamics of Earthquake Faults

We present an overview of our ongoing studies of the rich dynamical behavior of the uniform, deterministic Burridge--Knopoff model of an earthquake fault. We discuss the behavior of the model in the context of current questions in seismology. Some of the topics considered include: (1) basic properties of the model, such as the magnitude vs. frequency distribution and the distinction between small and large events; (2) dynamics of individual events, including dynamical selection of rupture propagation speeds; (3) generalizations of the model to more realistic, higher dimensional models; (4) studies of predictability, in which artificial catalogs generated by the model are used to test and determine the limitations of pattern recognition algorithms used in seismology.

A Simple Model for Faraday Waves

We show that the linear-stability analysis of the birth of Faraday waves on the surface of a fluid is simplified considerably when the fluid container is driven by a triangle waveform rather than by a sine wave. The calculation is simple enough to use in an undergraduate course on fluid dynamics or nonlinear dynamics. It is also an attractive starting point for a nonlinear analysis.

The Johnson-Segalman model with a diffusion term in Couette flow

We study the Johnson-Segalman (JS) model as a paradigm for some complex fluids which are observed to phase separate, or ``shear-band'' in flow. We analyze the behavior of this model in cylindrical Couette flow and demonstrate the history dependence inherent in the local JS model. We add a simple gradient term to the stress dynamics and demonstrate how this term breaks the degeneracy of the local model and prescribes a much smaller (discrete, rather than continuous) set of banded steady state solutions. We investigate some of the effects of the curvature of Couette flow on the observable steady state behavior and kinetics, and discuss some of the implications for metastability.

Complex Patterns in a Simple System

Numerical simulations of a simple reaction--diffusion model reveal a surprising variety of irregular spatio--temporal patterns. These patterns arise in response to finite--amplitude perturbations. Some of them resemble the steady irregular patterns discussed by Lee et al. Others consist of spots which grow until they reach a critical size at which time they divide in two. If, in some region, the spots become overcrowded, all the spots in that region decay into the uniform background.

Life-Times of Simulated Traffic Jams

We study a model for freeway traffic which includes strong noise taking into account the fluctuations of individual driving behavior. The model shows emergent traffic jams with a self-similar appearance near the throughput maximum of the traffic. The lifetime distribution of these jams shows a short scaling regime, which gets considerably longer if one reduces the fluctuations for driving at maximum speed but leaves the fluctuations for slowing down or accelerating unchanged. The outflow from a traffic jam self-organizes into this state of maximum throughput.

Lattice-Gas Simulations of Ternary Amphiphilic Fluid Flow in Porous Media

We develop our existing two-dimensional lattice-gas model to simulate the flow of single-phase, binary-immiscible and ternary-amphiphilic fluids. This involves the inclusion of fixed obstacles on the lattice, together with the inclusion of ``no-slip'' boundary conditions. Here we report on preliminary applications of this model to the flow of such fluids within model porous media. We also construct fluid invasion boundary conditions, and the effects of invading aqueous solutions of surfactant on oil-saturated rock during imbibition and drainage are described.

New Sets of Kink Bearing Hamiltonians

Given a kink bearing Hamiltonian, Isospectral Hamiltonian approach is used in generating new sets of Hamiltonains which also admit kink solutions. We use Sine-Gordon model as a example and explicitly work out the new sets of potentials and the solutions.

Spatial- and spatio-temporal pattern formation in optically driven discrete systems

Dynamical coherent structure (pattern) formation in the Klein-Gordon lattice excited by periodic external field near the optical resonance is studied. It is shown that besides spatial patterns discovered recently (V.M.Burlakov, Phys.Rev.Lett. 80, 3988 (1998)) the spatio-temporal patterns can be generated in the lattice in rather broad region of excitation parameters. An influence of cubic anharmonicity in the lattice potential and that of random noise on the pattern formation is examined.

Discrete Dynamical Models Showing Pattern Formation in Subaqueous Bedforms

A new class of ``toy models'' for subaqueous bedform formation are proposed and examined. These models all show a similar mechanism of wavelength selection via bedform unification, and they may have applications to bedform stratigraphy. The models are also useful for exploring general issues of pattern formation and complexity in stochastically driven far from equilibrium systems.

Front Structures in a Real Ginzburg-Landau Equation Coupled to a Mean Field

Localized traveling wave trains or pulses have been observed in various experiments in binary mixture convection. For strongly negative separation ratio, these pulse structures can be described as two interacting fronts of opposite orientation. An analytical study of the front solutions in a real Ginzburg-Landau equation coupled to a mean field is presented here as a first approach to the pulse solution. The additional mean field becomes important when the mass diffusion in the mixture is small as is the case in liquids. Within this framework it can lead to a hysteretic transition between slow and fast fronts when the Rayleigh number is changed.

Maps, PDE's and Solitary Waves

We describe a map-based model which reproduces many of the behaviors seen in partial differential equations (PDE's). Like PDE's, we show that this model can support an infinite number of stationary solutions, traveling solutions, breathing solutions, and elastically colliding solutions. Unlike PDE's, the model can be applied with minimal computational machinery, and few sources of numerical error. Moreover, this model clarifies possible mechanisms by which various coherent solutions are maintained in the face of dispersion.
