Dipole-Mode Vector Solitons

We find a new type of optical vector soliton that originates from trapping of a dipole mode by a soliton-induced waveguide. These solitons, which appear as a consequence of the vector nature of the two component system, are more stable than the previously found optical vortex-mode solitons and represent a new type of extremely robust nonlinear vector structure.

Dynamics of Earthquake Faults

We present an overview of our ongoing studies of the rich dynamical behavior of the uniform, deterministic Burridge--Knopoff model of an earthquake fault. We discuss the behavior of the model in the context of current questions in seismology. Some of the topics considered include: (1) basic properties of the model, such as the magnitude vs. frequency distribution and the distinction between small and large events; (2) dynamics of individual events, including dynamical selection of rupture propagation speeds; (3) generalizations of the model to more realistic, higher dimensional models; (4) studies of predictability, in which artificial catalogs generated by the model are used to test and determine the limitations of pattern recognition algorithms used in seismology.

Stellar Oscillons

We study the weakly nonlinear evolution of acoustic instability of a plane- parallel polytrope with thermal dissipation in the form of Newton's law of cooling. The most unstable horizontal wavenumbers form a band around zero and this permits the development of a nonlinear pattern theory leading to a complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE). Numerical solutions for a subcritical, quintic CGLE produce vertically oscillating, localized structures that resemble the oscillons observed in recent experiments of vibrated granular material.

A Simple Model for Faraday Waves

We show that the linear-stability analysis of the birth of Faraday waves on the surface of a fluid is simplified considerably when the fluid container is driven by a triangle waveform rather than by a sine wave. The calculation is simple enough to use in an undergraduate course on fluid dynamics or nonlinear dynamics. It is also an attractive starting point for a nonlinear analysis.

The Johnson-Segalman model with a diffusion term in Couette flow

We study the Johnson-Segalman (JS) model as a paradigm for some complex fluids which are observed to phase separate, or ``shear-band'' in flow. We analyze the behavior of this model in cylindrical Couette flow and demonstrate the history dependence inherent in the local JS model. We add a simple gradient term to the stress dynamics and demonstrate how this term breaks the degeneracy of the local model and prescribes a much smaller (discrete, rather than continuous) set of banded steady state solutions. We investigate some of the effects of the curvature of Couette flow on the observable steady state behavior and kinetics, and discuss some of the implications for metastability.

Complex Patterns in a Simple System

Numerical simulations of a simple reaction--diffusion model reveal a surprising variety of irregular spatio--temporal patterns. These patterns arise in response to finite--amplitude perturbations. Some of them resemble the steady irregular patterns discussed by Lee et al. Others consist of spots which grow until they reach a critical size at which time they divide in two. If, in some region, the spots become overcrowded, all the spots in that region decay into the uniform background.

Life-Times of Simulated Traffic Jams

We study a model for freeway traffic which includes strong noise taking into account the fluctuations of individual driving behavior. The model shows emergent traffic jams with a self-similar appearance near the throughput maximum of the traffic. The lifetime distribution of these jams shows a short scaling regime, which gets considerably longer if one reduces the fluctuations for driving at maximum speed but leaves the fluctuations for slowing down or accelerating unchanged. The outflow from a traffic jam self-organizes into this state of maximum throughput.

Patterns and Long Range Correlations in Idealized Granular Flows

An initially homogeneous freely evolving fluid of inelastic hard spheres develops inhomogeneities in the flow field (vortices) and in the density field (clusters), driven by unstable fluctuations. Their spatial correlations, as measured in molecular dynamics simulations, exhibit long range correlations; the mean vortex diameter grows as the square root of time; there occur transitions to macroscopic shearing states, etc. The Cahn--Hilliard theory of spinodal decomposition offers a qualitative understanding and quantitative estimates of the observed phenomena. When intrinsic length scales are of the order of the system size, effects of physical boundaries and periodic boundaries (finite size effects in simulations) are important.

Lattice-Gas Simulations of Ternary Amphiphilic Fluid Flow in Porous Media

We develop our existing two-dimensional lattice-gas model to simulate the flow of single-phase, binary-immiscible and ternary-amphiphilic fluids. This involves the inclusion of fixed obstacles on the lattice, together with the inclusion of ``no-slip'' boundary conditions. Here we report on preliminary applications of this model to the flow of such fluids within model porous media. We also construct fluid invasion boundary conditions, and the effects of invading aqueous solutions of surfactant on oil-saturated rock during imbibition and drainage are described.

New Sets of Kink Bearing Hamiltonians

Given a kink bearing Hamiltonian, Isospectral Hamiltonian approach is used in generating new sets of Hamiltonains which also admit kink solutions. We use Sine-Gordon model as a example and explicitly work out the new sets of potentials and the solutions.

Spatial- and spatio-temporal pattern formation in optically driven discrete systems

Dynamical coherent structure (pattern) formation in the Klein-Gordon lattice excited by periodic external field near the optical resonance is studied. It is shown that besides spatial patterns discovered recently (V.M.Burlakov, Phys.Rev.Lett. 80, 3988 (1998)) the spatio-temporal patterns can be generated in the lattice in rather broad region of excitation parameters. An influence of cubic anharmonicity in the lattice potential and that of random noise on the pattern formation is examined.

Discrete Dynamical Models Showing Pattern Formation in Subaqueous Bedforms

A new class of ``toy models'' for subaqueous bedform formation are proposed and examined. These models all show a similar mechanism of wavelength selection via bedform unification, and they may have applications to bedform stratigraphy. The models are also useful for exploring general issues of pattern formation and complexity in stochastically driven far from equilibrium systems.

Front Structures in a Real Ginzburg-Landau Equation Coupled to a Mean Field

Localized traveling wave trains or pulses have been observed in various experiments in binary mixture convection. For strongly negative separation ratio, these pulse structures can be described as two interacting fronts of opposite orientation. An analytical study of the front solutions in a real Ginzburg-Landau equation coupled to a mean field is presented here as a first approach to the pulse solution. The additional mean field becomes important when the mass diffusion in the mixture is small as is the case in liquids. Within this framework it can lead to a hysteretic transition between slow and fast fronts when the Rayleigh number is changed.

Maps, PDE's and Solitary Waves

We describe a map-based model which reproduces many of the behaviors seen in partial differential equations (PDE's). Like PDE's, we show that this model can support an infinite number of stationary solutions, traveling solutions, breathing solutions, and elastically colliding solutions. Unlike PDE's, the model can be applied with minimal computational machinery, and few sources of numerical error. Moreover, this model clarifies possible mechanisms by which various coherent solutions are maintained in the face of dispersion.

Nonclassical Kinetics in Constrained Geometries: Initial Distribution Effects

We present a detailed study of the effects of the initial distribution on the kinetic evolution of the irreversible reaction A+B -> 0 in one dimension. Our analytic as well as numerical work is based on a reaction-diffusion model of this reaction. We focus on the role of initial density fluctuations in the creation of the macroscopic patterns that lead to the well-known kinetic anomalies in this system. In particular, we discuss the role of the long wavelength components of the initial fluctuations in determining the long-time behavior of the system. We note that the frequently studied random initial distribution is but one of a variety of possible distributions leading to interesting anomalous behavior. Our discussion includes an initial distribution with correlated A-B pairs and one in which the initial distribution forms a fractal pattern. The former is an example of a distribution whose long wavelength components are suppressed, while the latter exemplifies one whose long wavelength components are enhanced, relative to those of the random distribution.

Validation and Calibration of Models for Reaction-Diffusion Systems

Space and time scales are not independent in diffusion. In fact, numerical simulations show that different patterns are obtained when space and time steps ($Δx$ and $Δt$) are varied independently. On the other hand, anisotropy effects due to the symmetries of the discretization lattice prevent the quantitative calibration of models. We introduce a new class of explicit difference methods for numerical integration of diffusion and reaction-diffusion equations, where the dependence on space and time scales occurs naturally. Numerical solutions approach the exact solution of the continuous diffusion equation for finite $Δx$ and $Δt$, if the parameter $γ_N=D Δt/(Δx)^2$ assumes a fixed constant value, where $N$ is an odd positive integer parametrizing the alghorithm. The error between the solutions of the discrete and the continuous equations goes to zero as $(Δx)^{2(N+2)}$ and the values of $γ_N$ are dimension independent. With these new integration methods, anisotropy effects resulting from the finite differences are minimized, defining a standard for validation and calibration of numerical solutions of diffusion and reaction-diffusion equations. Comparison between numerical and analytical solutions of reaction-diffusion equations give global discretization errors of the order of $10^{-6}$ in the sup norm. Circular patterns of travelling waves have a maximum relative random deviation from the spherical symmetry of the order of 0.2%, and the standard deviation of the fluctuations around the mean circular wave front is of the order of $10^{-3}$.

Spiral Waves in Media with Complex Excitable Dynamics

The structure of spiral waves is investigated in super-excitable reaction-diffusion systems where the local dynamics exhibits multi-looped phase space trajectories. It is shown that such systems support stable spiral waves with broken symmetry and complex temporal dynamics. The main structural features of such waves, synchronization defect lines, are demonstrated to be similar to those of spiral waves in systems with complex-oscillatory dynamics.

Two-phase binary fluids and immiscible fluids described by an order parameter

A unified framework for coupled Navier-Stokes/Cahn-Hilliard equations is developed using, as a basis, a balance law for microforces in conjunction with constitutive equations consistent with a mechanical version of the second law. As a numerical application of the theory, we consider the kinetics of coarsening for a binary fluid in two space-dimensions.
