Towards detailed tomography of high energy heavy-ion collisions by $γ$-jet

Within a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model with string melting scenario, the transverse momentum imbalance between prompt photon and jet is studied in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV. Jet loses more energy in more central collisions due to strong partonic interactions between jet parton shower and partonic matter, which is more significant than due to hadronic interactions only. The hadronization and final-state hadronic interactions have little influences on the imbalance. The imbalance ratio $x_{jγ}$ is sensitive to both production position and passing direction of $γ$-jet, which provides an opportunity to do detail $γ$-jet tomography on the formed partonic matter by selecting different $x_{jγ}$ ranges. It is also proposed that $γ$-hadron azimuthal correlation associated with photon+jet is a probe to see the medium responses to different $γ$-jet production configurations.

Probing in-medium spin-orbit potential with intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions

Incorporating for the first time both the spin and isospin degrees of freedom explicitly in transport model simulations of intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions, we observe that a local spin polarization appears during collision process. Most interestingly, it is found that the nucleon spin up-down differential transverse flow is a sensitive probe of the spin-orbit interaction, providing a novel approach to probe both the density and isospin dependence of the in-medium spin-orbit coupling that is important for understanding the structure of rare isotopes and synthesis of superheavy elements.

Measurement with the ATLAS detector of multi-particle azimuthal correlations in p+Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=5.02 TeV

In order to study further the long-range correlations ("ridge") observed recently in p+Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) =5.02 TeV, the second-order azimuthal anisotropy parameter of charged particles, v_2, has been measured with the cumulant method using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. In a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 1 microb^(-1), the parameter v_2 has been obtained using two- and four-particle cumulants over the pseudorapidity range |eta|<2.5. The results are presented as a function of transverse momentum and the event activity, defined in terms of the transverse energy summed over 3.1<eta<4.9 in the direction of the Pb beam. They show features characteristic of collective anisotropic flow, similar to that observed in Pb+Pb collisions. A comparison is made to results obtained using two-particle correlation methods, and to predictions from hydrodynamic models of p+Pb collisions. Despite the small transverse spatial extent of the p+Pb collision system, the large magnitude of v_2 and its similarity to hydrodynamic predictions provide additional evidence for the importance of final-state effects in p+Pb reactions.

Femtoscopic scales in $p+p$ and $p+$Pb collisions in view of the uncertainty principle

A method for quantum corrections of Hanbury-Brown/Twiss (HBT) interferometric radii produced by semi-classical event generators is proposed. These corrections account for the basic indistinguishability and mutual coherence of closely located emitters caused by the uncertainty principle. A detailed analysis is presented for pion interferometry in $p+p$ collisions at LHC energy ($\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV). A prediction is also presented of pion interferometric radii for $p+$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV. The hydrodynamic/hydrokinetic model with UrQMD cascade as 'afterburner' is utilized for this aim. It is found that quantum corrections to the interferometry radii improve significantly the event generator results which typically overestimate the experimental radii of small systems. A successful description of the interferometry structure of $p+p$ collisions within the corrected hydrodynamic model requires the study of the problem of thermalization mechanism, still a fundamental issue for ultrarelativistic $A+A$ collisions, also for high multiplicity $p+p$ and $p+$Pb events.

Model dependence of isospin sensitive observables at high densities

Within two different frameworks of isospin-dependent transport model, i.e., Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (IBUU04) and Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) transport models, sensitive probes of nuclear symmetry energy are simulated and compared. It is shown that neutron to proton ratio of free nucleons, pi-/pi+ ratio as well as isospin-sensitive transverse and elliptic flows given by the two transport models with their "best settings", all have obvious differences. Discrepancy of numerical value of isospin-sensitive n/p ratio of free nucleon from the two models mainly originates from different symmetry potentials used and discrepancies of numerical value of charged pi-/pi+ ratio and isospin-sensitive flows mainly originate from different isospin-dependent nucleon-nucleon cross sections. These demonstrations call for more detailed studies on the model inputs (i.e., the density- and momentum-dependent symmetry potential and the isospin-dependent nucleon-nucleon cross section in medium) of isospin-dependent transport model used. The studies of model dependence of isospin sensitive observables can help nuclear physicists to pin down the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy through comparison between experiments and theoretical simulations scientifically.

Constraining the symmetry energy at subsaturation densities using isotope binding energy difference and neutron skin thickness

We show that the neutron skin thickness $Δr_{np}$ of heavy nuclei is uniquely fixed by the symmetry energy density slope $L(ρ)$ at a subsaturation cross density $ρ_c \approx 0.11$ fm$^{-3}$ rather than at saturation density $ρ_0$, while the binding energy difference $ΔE$ between a heavy isotope pair is essentially determined by the magnitude of the symmetry energy $E_{\text{sym}}(ρ)$ at the same $ρ_c$. Furthermore, we find a value of $L({ρ_c})$ leads to a negative $E_{\text{sym}}({ρ_{0}})$-$L({ρ_{0}})$ correlation while a value of $E_{\text{sym}}({ρ_{c})}$ leads to a positive one. Using data on $Δr_{np}$ of Sn isotopes and $ΔE$ of a number of heavy isotope pairs, we obtain simultaneously $E_{\text{sym}}({ρ_{c})}=26.65\pm0.20$ MeV and $L({ρ_c})= 46.0\pm4.5$ MeV at 95% confidence level, whose extrapolation gives $E_{\text{sym}}({ρ_{0}})=32.3\pm1.0$ MeV and $L({ρ_{0}})=45.2\pm10.0$ MeV. The implication of these new constraints on the $Δr_{np}$ of $^{208}$Pb and the core-crust transition density in neutron stars is discussed.

Contributions to the event-by-event charge asymmetry dependence for the elliptic flow of pi^{+} and pi^{-} in heavy-ion collisions

We discuss various contributions to the event-by-event charge-asymmetry dependence of $π^{+}$ and $π^{-}$ elliptic flow, recently measured by the STAR Collaboration at RHIC. It is shown that under general assumptions, the difference between $v_2^+$ and $v_2^-$ at a given fluctuating value of an asymmetry parameter, $A$, is a linear function of $A$, as observed in the preliminary data. We discuss two mechanisms that are qualitatively consistent with the experimental data and result in a signal of the correct order of magnitude. Our subsequent hydrodynamic calculations, assuming local charge conservation at freeze-out, yield a qualitative and partial quantitative understanding of the observed signal, so offering a detailed test of the hydrodynamic model in heavy-ion collisions.

Inclusive b-jet production in heavy ion collisions at the LHC

Theoretical and experimental advances in understanding light jet production and modification in Pb+Pb reactions at a center-of-mass energy 2.76 TeV have been a highlight of the LHC heavy ion program. At the same time, the detailed mechanisms of heavy quark energy loss in dense QCD matter are not yet fully understood. With this motivation, we present theoretical predictions for the nuclear-induced attenuation of the differential cross sections for inclusive b-jet production in heavy ion collisions at the LHC for comparison to upcoming data. We find that for transverse momenta pT > 75 GeV both hadronization and mass effects are negligible and this attenuation is comparable to the one observed for light jets. We discuss how the detailed b-jet quenching patterns can be used to gain new insight into the in-medium heavy flavor dynamics.

Search for a dark photon in the $π^0 \to e^+e^-γ$ decay

The presently world largest data sample of pi0 --> gamma e+e- decays containing nearly 5E5 events was collected using the WASA detector at COSY. A search for a dark photon U produced in the pi0 --> gamma U --> gamma e+e- decay from the pp-->ppπ^0 reaction was carried out. An upper limit on the square of the U-gamma mixing strength parameter epsilon^2 of 5e-6 at 90% CL was obtained for the mass range 20 MeV <M_U< 100 MeV. This result together with other recent experimental limits significantly reduces the M_U vs. ε^2 parameter space preferred by the measured value of the muon anomalous magnetic moment.

High-resolution measurement of the time-modulated orbital electron capture and of the $β^+$ decay of hydrogen-like $^{142}$Pm$^{60+}$ ions

The periodic time modulations, found recently in the two-body orbital electron-capture (EC) decay of both, hydrogen-like $^{140}$Pr$^{58+}$ and $^{142}$Pm$^{60+}$ ions, with periods near to 7s and amplitudes of about 20%, were re-investigated for the case of $^{142}$Pm$^{60+}$ by using a 245 MHz resonator cavity with a much improved sensitivity and time resolution. We observed that the exponential EC decay is modulated with a period $T = 7.11(11)$s, in accordance with a modulation period $T = 7.12(11)$ s as obtained from simultaneous observations with a capacitive pick-up, employed also in the previous experiments. The modulation amplitudes amount to $a_R = 0.107(24)$ and $a_P = 0.134(27)$ for the 245 MHz resonator and the capacitive pick-up, respectively. These new results corroborate for both detectors {\it exactly} our previous findings of modulation periods near to 7s, though with {\it distinctly smaller} amplitudes. Also the three-body $β^+$ decays have been analyzed. For a supposed modulation period near to 7s we found an amplitude $a = 0.027(27)$, compatible with $a = 0$ and in agreement with the preliminary result $a = 0.030(30)$ of our previous experiment. These observations could point at weak interaction as origin of the observed 7s-modulation of the EC decay. Furthermore, the data suggest that interference terms occur in the two-body EC decay, although the neutrinos are not directly observed.

Enhanced J/Psi-pair production from double parton scatterings in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the Large Hadron Collider

A generic expression of double-parton scattering cross sections in high-energy nucleus-nucleus (A-A) collisions is derived as a function of the corresponding single-parton hard cross sections and of the A-A event centrality. We consider the case of prompt-J/psi production in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and find that about 20% (35%) of the J/psi events in minimum-bias (most central) collisions contain a second J/psi from double parton interactions. In Pb-Pb at 5.5 TeV, in the absence of final-state effects, about 240 double-J/psi events are expected per unit midrapidity and per inverse-nanobarn in the dilepton decay modes. The implications of double-J/psi production on the interpretation of the observed J/psi suppression in A-A collisions are discussed.

Comparison of the Color Glass Condensate to multiplicity dependence of the average transverse momentum in p+p, p+Pb and Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC

The first moment of the charged-particle transverse momentum spectrum and its correlation with the charged-particle multiplicity N_{ch} provide vital information about the underlying particle production mechanism. The ALICE collaboration recently reported that versus N_{ch} in Pb+Pb collisions is smaller than in p+p and p+Pb collisions. Other interesting features of data is rather flatness of at high N_{ch} in Pb+Pb and p+Pb collisions in seemingly striking contrast to the case of p+p collisions. With a detailed calculation, we show all these peculiar features in a wide range of energies and system sizes can be well described by the idea of gluon saturation within the Color Glass Condensate framework using the k_T-factorization. This establishes an important fact that the bulk of the produced particles in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC carries signature of the initial stage of collisions. We also show that the recent scaling property seen by the CMS collaboration between the number of tracks in p+p and p+Pb collisions may provide a strong evidence in favor of geometric-scaling phenomenon and gluon saturation, indicating that the underlying dynamics of high multiplicity events in p+p and p+Pb collisions should be similar.

Shear viscosity of neutron-rich nucleonic matter near its liquid-gas phase transition

Within a relaxation time approach using free nucleon-nucleon cross sections modified by the in-medium nucleon masses that are determined from an isospin- and momentum-dependent effective nucleon-nucleon interaction, we investigate the specific shear viscosity ($η/s$) of neutron-rich nucleonic matter near its liquid-gas phase transition. It is found that as the nucleonic matter is heated at fixed pressure or compressed at fixed temperature, its specific shear viscosity shows a valley shape in the temperature or density dependence, with the minimum located at the boundary of the phase transition. Moreover, the value of $η/s$ drops suddenly at the first-order liquid-gas phase transition temperature, reaching as low as $4\sim5$ times the KSS bound of $\hbar/4π$. However, it varies smoothly for the second-order liquid-gas phase transition. Effects of the isospin degree of freedom and the nuclear symmetry energy on the value of $η/s$ are also discussed.

Determination of the η'-nucleus optical potential

The excitation function and momentum distribution of $η^\prime$ mesons have been measured in photon induced reactions on $^{12}{}$C in the energy range of 1250-2600 MeV. The experiment was performed with tagged photon beams from the ELSA electron accelerator using the Crystal Barrel and TAPS detectors. The data are compared to model calculations to extract information on the sign and magnitude of the real part of the $η^\prime$-nucleus potential. Within the model, the comparison indicates an attractive potential of -($37 \pm 10(stat)\pm10(syst)$) MeV depth at normal nuclear matter density. Since the modulus of this depth is larger than the modulus of the imaginary part of the $η^\prime$-nucleus potential of -($10\pm2.5$) MeV, determined by transparency ratio measurements, a search for resolved $η^\prime$-bound states appears promising.

Strange freezeout

We argue that known systematics of hadron cross sections may cause different particles to freeze out of the fireball produced in heavy-ion collisions at different times. We find that a simple model with two freezeout points is a better description of data than that with a single freezeout, while still remaining predictive. The resulting fits seem to present constraints on the late stage evolution of the fireball, including the tantalizing possibility that the QCD chiral transition influences the yields at sqrt(S)=2700 GeV and the QCD critical point those at sqrt(S)=17.3 GeV.

Multi-strange baryon production at mid-rapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV

The production of ${\rmΞ}^-$ and ${\rmΩ}^-$ baryons and their anti-particles in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV has been measured using the ALICE detector. The transverse momentum spectra at mid-rapidity ($|y| < 0.5$) for charged $\rmΞ$ and $\rmΩ$ hyperons have been studied in the range $0.6 < p_{\rm T} < 8.0$ GeV/$c$ and $1.2 < p_{\rm T} < 7.0$ GeV/$c$, respectively, and in several centrality intervals (from the most central 0-10% to the most peripheral 60-80% collisions). These spectra have been compared with the predictions of recent hydrodynamic models. In particular, the Krak${ó}$w and EPOS models give a satisfactory description of the data, with the latter covering a wider $p_{\rm T}$ range. Mid-rapidity yields, integrated over $p_{\rm T}$, have been determined. The hyperon-to-pion ratios are similar to those at RHIC: they rise smoothly with centrality up to $\langle N_{\rm part}\rangle$~150 and saturate thereafter. The enhancements (yields per participant nucleon relative to pp collisions) increase both with the strangeness content of the baryon and with centrality, but are less pronounced than at lower energies.

One-neutron knockout reaction of 17C on a hydrogen target at 70 MeV/nucleon

First experimental evidence of the population of the first 2- state in 16C above the neutron threshold is obtained by neutron knockout from 17C on a hydrogen target. The invariant mass method combined with in-beam gamma-ray detection is used to locate the state at 5.45(1) MeV. Comparison of its populating cross section and parallel momentum distribution with a Glauber model calculation utilizing the shell-model spectroscopic factor confirms the core-neutron removal nature of this state. Additionally, a previously known unbound state at 6.11 MeV and a new state at 6.28(2) MeV are observed. The position of the first 2- state, which belongs to a member of the lowest-lying p-sd cross shell transition, is reasonably well described by the shell-model calculation using the WBT interaction.

Mode-by-mode fluid dynamics for relativistic heavy ion collisions

We propose to study the fluid dynamic propagation of fluctuations in relativistic heavy ion collisions differentially with respect to their azimuthal, radial and longitudinal wavelength. To this end, we introduce a background-fluctuation splitting and a Bessel-Fourier decomposition of the fluctuating modes. We demonstrate how the fluid dynamic evolution of realistic events can be build up from the propagation of individual modes. We describe the main elements of this mode-by-mode fluid dynamics, and we discuss its use in the fluid dynamic analysis of heavy ion collisions. As a first illustration, we quantify to what extent only fluctuations of sufficiently large radial wave length contribute to harmonic flow coefficients. We find that fluctuations of short wave length are suppressed not only due to larger dissipative effects, but also due to a geometrical averaging over the freeze-out hyper surface. In this way, our study further substantiates the picture that harmonic flow coefficients give access to a coarse-grained version of the initial conditions for heavy ion collisions, only.
