Finite temperature excitations of a trapped Bose gas

We present a detailed study of the temperature dependence of the condensate and noncondensate density profiles of a Bose-condensed gas in a parabolic trap. These quantitites are calculated self-consistently using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations within the Popov approximation. Below the Bose-Einstein transition the excitation frequencies have a realtively weak temperature dependence even though the condensate is strongly depleted. As the condensate density goes to zero through the transition, the excitation frequencies are strongly affected and approach the frequencies of a noninteracting gas in the high temperature limit.

Magneto-Resistance in the Two-Channel Anderson Lattice

The paramagnetic phase of the two channel Anderson Lattice model in the Kondo limit is investigated in infinite spatial dimensions using the non-crossing approximation. The resistivity exhibits a Kondo upturn with decreasing $T$, followed by a slow decrease to a finite value at $T=0$. The decrease reflects lattice coherence effects in concert with particle-hole symmetry breaking. The magneto-resistance obeys an approximate scaling relation, decreasing towards coherent Fermi liquid behavior with increasing field. The magnetic field induces a Drude peak in the optical conductivity.

Quasiparticle Lifetime in a Finite System: A Non--Perturbative Approach

The problem of electron--electron lifetime in a quantum dot is studied beyond perturbation theory by mapping it onto the problem of localization in the Fock space. We identify two regimes, localized and delocalized, corresponding to quasiparticle spectral peaks of zero and finite width, respectively. In the localized regime, quasiparticle states are very close to single particle excitations. In the delocalized state, each eigenstate is a superposition of states with very different quasiparticle content. A transition between the two regimes occurs at the energy $\simeqΔ(g/\ln g)^{1/2}$, where $Δ$ is the one particle level spacing, and $g$ is the dimensionless conductance. Near this energy there is a broad critical region in which the states are multifractal, and are not described by the Golden Rule.

Relations Between Markov Processes Via Local Time and Coordinate Transformations

The Duru-Kleinert (DK) method of solving unknown path integrals of quantum mechanical systems by relating them to known ones does not apply to Markov processes since the DK-transform of a Fokker-Planck equation is in general not a Fokker-Planck equation. In this note, we present a significant modification of the method, based again on a combination of path-dependent time and coordinate transformations, to obtain such relations after all. As an application we express unknown Green functions for a one-parameter family of Markov processes in terms of the known one for the Schenzle-Brandt process.

Possible chiral phase transition in two-dimensional solid $^3$He

We study a spin system with two- and four-spin exchange interactions on the triangular lattice, which is a possible model for the nuclear magnetism of solid $^3$He layers. It is found that a novel spin structure with scalar chiral order appears if the four-spin interaction is dominant. Ground-state properties are studied using the spin-wave approximation. A phase transition concerning the scalar chirality occurs at a finite temperature, even though the dimensionality of the system is two and the interaction has isotropic spin symmetry. Critical properties of this transition are studied with Monte Carlo simulations in the classical limit.

Avoided Band Crossings: Tuning Metal-Insulator Transitions in Chaotic Systems

We show that avoided crossings of energy bands may give rise to a variety of phenomena such as transitions from metal to insulator and vice versa, changes in localization lengths, and changes in the fractal dimension of energy spectra. We explain the occurrence of these phenomena in the kicked Harper model under classically chaotic conditions and predict them to occur in other systems.

Distribution of Eigenvalues in Non-Hermitian Anderson Model

We develop a theory which describes the behaviour of eigenvalues of a class of one-dimensional random non-Hermitian operators introduced recently by Hatano and Nelson. Under general assumptions on random parameters we prove that the eigenvalues are distributed along a curve in the complex plane. An equation for the curve is derived and the density of complex eigenvalues is found in terms of spectral characteristics of a ``reference'' hermitian disordered system. Coexistence of the real and complex parts in the spectrum and other generic properties of the eigenvalue distribution for the non-Hermitian problem are discussed.

Dynamical properties of the pinned Wigner crystal

We study various dynamical properties of the weakly pinned Wigner crystal in a high magnetic field. Using a Gaussian variational method we can compute the full frequency and field dependence of the real and imaginary parts of the diagonal and Hall conductivities. The zero temperature Hall resistivity is independent of frequency and remains unaffected by disorder at its classical value. We show that, depending on the inherent length scales of the system, the pinning peak and the threshold electric field exhibit strikingly different magnetic field dependences.

The dynamics of component separation in a binary mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates

We present studies of the time-evolution of a two-component system of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in the |F=1, mf=-1> and |2,1> spin states of Rb-87. The two condensates are created with a well-defined relative phase and complete spatial overlap. In subsequent evolution they undergo complex relative motions which tend to preserve the total density profile. the motions quickly damp out, leaving the condensates in a steady state with a nonnegligible (and adjustable) overlap region.

Disordered XY models and Coulomb gases: renormalization via traveling waves

We present a novel RG approach to 2D random XY models using direct and replicated Coulomb gas methods. By including fusion of environments (charge fusion in the replicated CG) it follows the distribution of local disorder, found to obey a Kolmogorov non linear equation (KPP) with traveling wave solutions. At low T and weak disorder it yields a glassy XY phase with broad distributions and precise connections to Derrida's GREM. Finding marginal operators at the disorder-induced transition is related to the front velocity selection problem in KPP equations yielding new critical behaviour. The method is applied to critical random Dirac problems.

Comment on ``Roughening Transition of Interfaces in Disordered Media''

Emig and Nattermann (Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 1469 (1998)) have recently investigated the competition between lattice pinning and impurity pinning using a Renormalisation Group (RG) approach. For elastic objects of internal dimensions $2 < D < 4$, they find, at zero temperature, an interesting second order phase transition between a flat phase for small disorder and a rough phase for large disorder. These results contrast with those obtained using the replica variational approach for the same problem, where a first order transition between flat and rough phases was predicted. In this comment, we show that these results can be reconciled by analysing the RG flow for an arbitrary dimension $N$ for the displacement field.

Thermodynamics of the one-dimensional SU(4) symmetric spin-orbital model

The ground state properties and the thermodynamics of the one-dimensional SU(4) symmetric spin system with orbital degeneracy are investigated using the quantum Monte Carlo loop algorithm. The spin-spin correlation functions exhibit a 4-site periodicity, and their low temperature behavior is controlled by two correlation lengths that diverge like the inverse temperature, while the entropy is linear in temperature and its slope is consistent with three gapless modes of velocity $π/2$. The physical implications of these results are discussed.

Correlations in the Adiabatic Response of Chaotic Systems

Adiabatic variation of the parameters of a chaotic system results in a fluctuating reaction force. In the leading order in the adiabaticity parameter, a dissipative force, that is present in classical mechanics was found to vanish in quantum mechanics. On the time scale t, this force is proportional to I(t), the integral of the force-force correlation function over time t. In order to understand the crossover between the classical and the quantum mechanical behavior we calculated I(t) in random matrix theory. We found that for systems belonging to the Gaussian unitary ensemble this crossover takes place at a characteristic time (proportional to the Heisenberg time) and for longer times I(t) practically vanishes, resulting in vanishing dissipation. For systems belonging to the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble I(t) drops like 1/t and there is no such characteristic time. I(t) is calculated for various models and the relation to experiment is discussed.

Molecular motor that never steps backwards

We investigate the dynamics of a classical particle in a one-dimensional two-wave potential composed of two periodic potentials, that are time-independent and of the same amplitude and periodicity. One of the periodic potentials is externally driven and performs a translational motion with respect to the other. It is shown that if one of the potentials is of the ratchet type, translation of the potential in a given direction leads to motion of the particle in the same direction, whereas translation in the opposite direction leaves the particle localized at its original location. Moreover, even if the translation is random, but still has a finite velocity, an efficient directed transport of the particle occurs.

High Pressure Insulator-Metal Transition in Molecular Fluid Oxygen

We report the first experimental evidence for a metallic phase in fluid molecular oxygen. Our electrical conductivity measurements of fluid oxygen under dynamic quasi-isentropic compression show that a non-metal/metal transition occurs at 3.4 fold compression, 4500 K and 1.2 Mbar. We discuss the main features of the electrical conductivity dependence on density and temperature and give an interpretation of the nature of the electrical transport mechanisms in fluid oxygen at these extreme conditions.

Freezing of dynamical exponents in low dimensional random media

A particle in a random potential with logarithmic correlations in dimensions $d=1,2$ is shown to undergo a dynamical transition at $T_{dyn}>0$. In $d=1$ exact results demonstrate that $T_{dyn}=T_c$, the static glass transition temperature, and that the dynamical exponent changes from $z(T)=2 + 2 (T_c/T)^2$ at high temperature to $z(T)= 4 T_c/T$ in the glass phase. The same formulae are argued to hold in $d=2$. Dynamical freezing is also predicted in the 2D random gauge XY model and related systems. In $d=1$ a mapping between dynamics and statics is unveiled and freezing involves barriers as well as valleys. Anomalous scaling occurs in the creep dynamics.

Critical phenomena of thick branes in warped spacetimes

We have investigated the effects of a generic bulk first-order phase transition on thick Minkowski branes in warped geometries. As occurs in Euclidean space, when the system is brought near the phase transition an interface separating two ordered phases splits into two interfaces with a disordered phase in between. A remarkable and distinctive feature is that the critical temperature of the phase transition is lowered due to pure geometrical effects. We have studied a variety of critical exponents and the evolution of the transverse-traceless sector of the metric fluctuations.
