Nonlinear evolution of the ablative Rayleigh-Taylor instability with preheating

Evolution of the single-mode ablative Rayleigh-Taylor instability in the presence of preheating is investigated numerically. It is found that the instability evolution depends strongly on the preheating length $L$ in front of the ablation-front interface. For weak preheating ($L/L_{\rm SH}\leq f_0$, where $L_{\rm SH}$ is the Spitzer-Harm length and $f_0\sim 20$ is a critical value), the linear growth rate has a sharp maximum and a secondary spike-bubble structure is generated. Interaction of this growing structure with the master spike-bubble leads to rupture of the latter. However, for strong preheating ($L/L_{\rm SH}>20$), the linear growth rate has no sharp maximum and no secondary spike-bubble is generated. Instead, the master spike-bubble evolves into an elongated jet. These results are interpreted in terms of the evolution and interaction of the instability-generated harmonic modes.

Electrostatic Potential of Phase Boundary in Coulomb Systems

Any interface boundary in an equilibrium system of Coulomb particles is accompanied by the existence of a finite difference in the average electrostatic potential through this boundary. This interface potential drop is a thermodynamic quantity. It depends on temperature only and does not depend on surface properties. The zero-temperature limit of this drop (along coexistence curve) is an individual substance coefficient. The drop tends to zero at the critical point of the gas-liquid phase transition. A special critical exponent can be defined to describe this behavior. The value of the discussed potential drop is directly calculated by numerical simulation of phase transitions in Coulomb systems. Properties of the interface potential drop are discussed for several simplified Coulomb models (melting and evaporation in the One Component Plasma (OCP)). Some examples of phase transition in real situations are also discussed.

Review of surface discharge experiments

Current state of the experimental physics of the surface discharge has been examined in the literature review. The existing works were classified by the mediums, where the surface discharge is explored, by the types of experimental setups and by the type of measured data. The conditional scheme of the surface discharge, which demonstrates the generality of the dielectric barrier discharge and the sliding one, was constructed. Some of the works have an applied purpose, therefore, the experimental setups are specific devices. These experimental setups have a lack of interest for studying physics of the surface discharge. There is no generality in the other experimental setups aimed at studying the phenomenon. All experiments are divided into two groups Scheme of experimental setup where more aspects of the surface discharge can be taken into account and their relationship traced was suggested.

New theorem of classical electromagnetism: equilibrium magnetic field and current density are zero inside ideal conductors

We prove a theorem on the magnetic energy minimum in a system of perfect, or ideal, conductors. It is analogous to Thomson's theorem on the equilibrium electric field and charge distribution in a system of conductors. We first prove Thomson's theorem using a variational principle. Our new theorem is then derived by similar methods. We find that magnetic energy is minimized when the current distribution is a surface current density with zero interior magnetic field; perfect conductors are perfectly diamagnetic. The results agree with currents in superconductors being confined near the surface. The theorem implies a generalized force that expels current and magnetic field from the interior of a conductor that loses its resistivity. Examples of solutions that obey the theorem are presented.

The sinusoid and the phasor

Mathieu equation is widely used to study several natural phenomenon. In this paper, we show that replacing the sinusoid in the Mathieu equation with a phasor can lead to solutions that behave in a totally different way. Solutions of Mathieu equation are either bounded or grow unboundedly at an exponential rate. Solutions of this new equation are always unbounded and grow linearly with time.

A Relativistic Generalization of Fowler-Nordheim Cold Emission in Presence of Strong Magnetic Field

A relativistic version of cold emission of electrons in presence of strong magnetic field, relevant for strongly magnetized neutron stars is obtained. It is found that in this scenario, a scalar type potential barrier does not allow quantum tunneling through the surface. Whereas, in presence of a vector type surface barrier, the probability of electron emission is much larger compared to the original Fowler-Nordheim cold emission of electrons. It is found that the relativistic version in presence of strong magnetic field does not follow exponential decay.

Emergence of High Peaks in the Axial Velocity for an Ideal Magnetohydrodynamics Disk Configuration

We study the profile of a thin disk configuration as described by an axisymmetric ideal magnetohydrodynamics steady equilibrium. We consider the disk like a differentially rotating system dominated by the Keplerian term, but allowing for a non-zero radial and vertical matter flux. As a result, the steady state allows for the existence of local peaks for the vertical velocity of the plasma particles, though it prevents the radial matter accretion rate. This ideal magnetohydrodynamics scheme is therefore unable to solve the angular momentum-transport problem, but we suggest that it provides a mechanism for the generation of matter-jet seeds.

Dual cascade and its possible variations in magnetized kinetic plasma turbulence

Electrostatic gyrokinetic absolute equilibria with continuum velocity field are obtained through the partition function and through the Green function of the functional integral. The new results justify and explain the prescription for quantization/discretization or taking the continuum limit of velocity. The mistakes in the Appendix D of our earlier work [J.-Z. Zhu and G. W. Hammett, Phys. Plasmas {\bf 17}, 122307 (2010)] are explained and corrected. If the lattice spacing for discretizing velocity is big enough, all the invariants could concentrate at the lowest Fourier modes in a negative-temperature state, which might indicate a possible variation of the dual cascade picture in two-dimension magnetized plasma turbulence.

The life-cycle of drift-wave turbulence driven by small scale instability

We demonstrate theoretically and numerically the zonal-flow/drift-wave feedback mechanism for the LH transition in an idealised model of plasma turbulence driven by a small scale instability. Zonal flows are generated by a secondary modulational instability of the modes which are directly driven by the primary instability. The zonal flows then suppress the small scales thereby arresting the energy injection into the system, a process which can be described using nonlocal wave turbulence theory. Finally, the arrest of the energy input results in saturation of the zonal flows at a level which can be estimated from the theory and the system reaches stationarity without damping of the large scales.

Controlling Electron-Beam Emittance Partitioning for Future X-Ray Light Sources

Motivated by the emittance requirements for future light sources, we show how longitudinal-transverse correlations can be introduced to create beams with large emittance asymmetry. This concept generalizes a key aspect of a Flat Beam Transform, which introduces initial correlations among the transverse planes, to systems with initial longitudinal-transverse correlations. We present an eigen-emittance formalism to analyze such systems. We illustrate the approach by analyzing an electron beam emitted from a photoinjector utilizing a laser with a tilted pulse front. This approach can be used to design beam delivery systems that achieve extraordinarily transversely bright electron beams.

An Energy Conserving Parallel Hybrid Plasma Solver

We investigate the performance of a hybrid plasma solver on the test problem of an ion beam. The parallel solver is based on cell centered finite differences in space, and a predictor-corrector leapfrog scheme in time. The implementation is done in the FLASH software framework. It is shown that the solver conserves energy well over time, and that the parallelization is efficient (it exhibits weak scaling).

Polariton Enhanced IR Reflection Spectra of Epitaxial Graphene on SiC

We show ~10x polariton-enhanced infrared reflectivity of epitaxial graphene on 4H-SiC, in SiC's restrahlen band (8-10um). By fitting measurements to theory, we extract the thickness, N, in monolayers (ML), momentum scattering time, Fermi level position of graphene and estimate carrier mobility. By showing that 1/root(ns), the carrier concentration/ML, we argue that scattering is dominated by short-range interactions at the SiC/graphene interface. Polariton formation finds application in near-field optical devices such as superlenses.

Three-Dimensional Lattice Boltzmann Model for High-Speed Compressible Flows

A highly efficient three-dimensional (3D) Lattice Boltzmann (LB) model for high speed compressible flows is proposed. This model is developed from the original one by Kataoka and Tsutahara[Phys. Rev. E 69, 056702 (2004)]. The convection term is discretized by the Non-oscillatory, containing No free parameters and Dissipative (NND) scheme, which effectively damps oscillations at discontinuities. To be more consistent with the kinetic theory of viscosity and to further improve the numerical stability, an additional dissipation term is introduced. Model parameters are chosen in such a way that the von Neumann stability criterion is satisfied. The new model is validated by well-known benchmarks, (i) Riemann problems, including the problem with Lax shock tube and a newly designed shock tube problem with high Mach number; (ii) reaction of shock wave on droplet or bubble. Good agreements are obtained between LB results and exact ones or previously reported solutions. The model is capable of simulating flows from subsonic to supersonic and capturing jumps resulted from shock waves.

Effective coupling parameter for 2D Yukawa liquids and non-invasive measurement of plasma parameters

We derive an effective coupling parameter for two-dimensional Yukawa systems based on the height of the first maximum of the pair distribution function. Two variants -- one valid in the high-coupling range, the other for arbitrary couplings of the liquid -- are derived. Comparison to previous approaches to Yukawa coupling parameters shows that the present concept is more general and more accurate. Using, in addition, dynamical information contained in the velocity autocorrelation function, we outline a reference data method that can be employed as a non-invasive measurement scheme of the plasma parameters -- the coupling strength and the screening length. This approach requires only input from a time-series of configuration snapshots and particle velocities with no recourse to additional information about the system. Our results should be directly applicable as a simple, yet reliable diagnostic method for a variety of experiments, including dusty plasmas, colloidal suspensions and ions in traps, and can be employed to facilitate comparisons between experiments, theory and simulations.

Resonant cyclotron acceleration of particles by a time periodic singular flux tube

We study the dynamics of a classical nonrelativistic charged particle moving on a punctured plane under the influence of a homogeneous magnetic field and driven by a periodically time-dependent singular flux tube through the hole. We observe an effect of resonance of the flux and cyclotron frequencies. The particle is accelerated to arbitrarily high energies even by a flux of small field strength which is not necessarily encircled by the cyclotron orbit; the cyclotron orbits blow up and the particle oscillates between the hole and infinity. We support this observation by an analytic study of an approximation for small amplitudes of the flux which is obtained with the aid of averaging methods. This way we derive asymptotic formulas that are afterwards shown to represent a good description of the accelerated motion even for fluxes which are not necessarily small. More precisely, we argue that the leading asymptotic terms may be regarded as approximate solutions of the original system in the asymptotic domain as the time tends to infinity.

Generation of Ultrafast Jets through the Implosion of a Nested Conical Wire Array

It is shown that in contrast to the electric pulse power driven implosion of a single conical wire array, the implosion of a nested conical wire array with opposite alternate opening angles can lead to the generation of fast jets, with velocities of the order 108 cm/s. This technique can be applied for the supersonic shear flow stabilization of a dense z-pinch, but possibly also for the fast ignition of a pre-compressed dense deuterium-tritium target.

Energy absorption of quasineutral plasmas through electronic edge-modes

Ultracold quasineutral plasmas generated in the laboratory are generically inhomogeneous and ex- hibit small charge imbalances. As will be demonstrated, via a hydrodynamic theory as well as microscopic simulations, the latter lead to efficient energy absorption at the plasma boundary. This proposed "edge-mode" is shown to provide a unified explanation for observed absorption spectra measured in different experiments. Understanding the response of the electronic plasma compo- nent to weak external driving is essential since it grants experimental access to the density and temperature of ultracold plasmas.

Kinetic model of GMSW in an anisotropic plasma

A kinetic model of gravimagnetic shock waves (GMSW) in a locally anisotropic plasma is investigated. The equations of a drift approximation are written, and the moments of the distribution function are calculated. Solutions of the drift equations for a highly anisotropic ultrarelativistic plasma are found. It is shown that in this case the GMSW essentially affect the angular characteristics and the intensity of the magneto - bremsstrahlung of the magnetoactive plasma.
