A New Phase of Tethered Membranes: Tubules

We show that fluctuating tethered membranes with {\it any} intrinsic anisotropy unavoidably exhibit a new phase between the previously predicted ``flat'' and ``crumpled'' phases, in high spatial dimensions $d$ where the crumpled phase exists. In this new "tubule" phase, the membrane is crumpled in one direction but extended nearly straight in the other. Its average thickness is $R_G\sim L^{ν_t}$ with $L$ the intrinsic size of the membrane. This phase is more likely to persist down to $d=3$ than the crumpled phase. In Flory theory, the universal exponent $ν_t=3/4$, which we conjecture is an exact result. We study the elasticity and fluctuations of the tubule state, and the transitions into it.

Probability of Reflection by a Random Laser

A theory is presented (and supported by numerical simulations) for phase-coherent reflection of light by a disordered medium which either absorbs or amplifies radiation. The distribution of reflection eigenvalues is shown to be the Laguerre ensemble of random-matrix theory. The statistical fluctuations of the albedo (the ratio of reflected and incident power) are computed for arbitrary ratio of sample thickness, mean free path, and absorption or amplification length. On approaching the laser threshold all moments of the distribution of the albedo diverge. Its modal value remains finite, however, and acquires an anomalous dependence on the illuminated surface area.

Grazing Incidence Infrared Reflectivity of La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$ and NbN

Infrared reflectivity measurements, using p-polarized light at a grazing angle of incidence, show an increased sensitivity to the optical conductivity of highly reflecting superconducting materials. We demonstrate that when this measurement technique is applied to the conventional s-wave superconductor NbN, the results are in perfect agreement with BCS theory. For the in-plane response of a La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$ single crystal, in the superconducting state, we find a reduction of the optical conductivity in the frequency range below 20 meV. The observed frequency dependence excludes an isotropic s-wave gap, but agrees well with model calculations assuming a d-wave order parameter.

Charge Density Wave in Two-Dimensional Electron Liquid in Weak Magnetic Field

We study the ground state of a clean two-dimensional electron liquid in a weak magnetic field where $N \gg 1$ lower Landau levels are completely filled and the upper level is partially filled. It is shown that the electrons at the upper Landau level form domains with filling factor equal to one and zero. The domains alternate with a spatial period of order of the cyclotron radius, which is much larger than the interparticle distance at the upper Landau level. The one-particle density of states, which can be probed by tunneling experiments, is shown to have a pseudogap linearly dependent on the magnetic field in the limit of large $N$.

New magnetic coherence effect in superconducting La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}

We have used inelastic neutron scattering to examine the magnetic fluctuations at intermediate frequencies in the simplest high temperature superconductor, La_{2-x}Sr_{x}Cu_{4}. The suppression of the low energy magnetic response in the superconducting state is accompanied by an increase in the response at higher energies. Just above a threshold energy of ~7 meV there is additional scattering present below T_{c} which is characterised by an extraordinarily long coherence length, in excess of 50 Å.

Tricritical behaviour of Ising spin glasses with charge fluctuations

We show that tricritical points displaying unusal behaviour exist in phase diagrams of fermionic Ising spin glasses as the chemical potential or the filling assumes characteristic values. Exact results for infinite range interaction and a one loop renormalization group analysis of thermal tricritical fluctuations for finite range models are presented. Surprising similarities with zero temperature transitions and a new $T=0$ tricritical point of metallic quantum spin glasses are derived.

Collective excitations of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

We apply linear-response analysis of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation to obtain the excitation frequencies of a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a time-averaged orbiting potential trap. Our calculated values are in excellent agreement with those observed in a recent experiment.

Glassy Motion of Elastic Manifolds

We discuss the low-temperature dynamics of an elastic manifold driven through a random medium. For driving forces well below the $T=0$ depinning force, the medium advances via thermally activated hops over the energy barriers separating favorable metastable states. We show that the distribution of waiting times for these hopping processes scales as a power-law. This power-law distribution naturally yields a nonlinear glassy response for the driven medium, $v\sim\exp(-{\rm const}\times F^{-μ})$.

Voltage rectification by a SQUID ratchet

We argue that the phase across an asymmetric dc SQUID threaded by a magnetic flux can experience an effective ratchet (periodic and asymmetric) potential. Under an external ac current, a rocking ratchet mechanism operates whereby one sign of the time derivative of the phase is favored. We show that there exists a range of parameters in which a fixed sign (and, in a narrower range, even a fixed value) of the average voltage across the ring occurs, regardless of the sign of the external current dc component.

Entropic Barriers, Frustration and Order: Basic Ingredients in Protein Folding

We solve a model that takes into account entropic barriers, frustration, and the organization of a protein-like molecule. For a chain of size $M$, there is an effective folding transition to an ordered structure. Without frustration, this state is reached in a time that scales as $M^λ$, with $λ\simeq 3$. This scaling is limited by the amount of frustration which leads to the dynamical selectivity of proteins: foldable proteins are limited to $\sim 300$ monomers; and they are stable in {\it one} range of temperatures, independent of size and structure. These predictions explain generic properties of {\it in vivo} proteins.

Spin Diffusion in 2D XY Ferromagnet with Dipolar Interaction

In the ordered phase of 2D XY ferromagnet the dipolar interaction between spins induces a strong, relevant interaction between spin-waves. We study quasi-excitations of the interacting spin-wave 'liquid' in the long wavelength limit. We employ the Janssen-De-Dominicis method for classical Langevin equation to find the transformation of the spin-wave excitation into a new soft-mode excitation in the intermediate range of wavelengths; and into an anomalous anisotropic diffusion mode excitation at long wavelengths. The dissipation of a spin-wave at short wavelengths is found to be highly anisotropic.

Ordering temperatures and critical exponents in Ising spin glasses

We propose a numerical criterion which can be used to obtain accurate and reliable values of the ordering temperatures and critical exponents of spin glasses. Using this method we find an value of the ordering temperature for the $\pm J$ Ising spin glass in three dimensions which is definitely non-zero and in good agreement with previous estimates. We show that the critical exponents of three dimensional Ising spin glasses do not appear to obey the usual universality rules.

Mesoscopic Capacitors: A Statistical Analysis

The capacitance of mesoscopic samples depends on their geometry and physical properties, described in terms of characteristic times scales. The resulting ac admittance shows sample to sample fluctuations. Their distribution is studied here -through a random-matrix model- for a chaotic cavity capacitively coupled to a backgate: it is observed from the distribution of scattering time delays for the cavity, which is found analytically for the orthogonal, unitary, and symplectic universality classes, one mode in the lead connecting the cavity to the reservoir and no direct scattering. The results agree with numerical simulations.

Dimensional Crossover in Quantum Antiferromagnets

The dimensional crossover in a spin-$S$ nearest neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet is discussed as it is tuned from a two-dimensional square lattice, of lattice spacing $a$, towards a spin chain by varying the width $L_y$ of a semi-infinite strip $L_x\times L_y$. For integer spins and arbitrary $L_y$, and for half integer spins with $L_y/a$ an arbitrary even integer, explicit analytical expressions for the zero temperature correlation length and the spin gap are given. For half integer spins and $L_y/a$ an odd inetger, it is shown that the $c=1$ behavior of the $SU(2)_1$ WZW fixed point is squeezed out as the width $L_y\to \infty$; here $c$ is the conformal charge. The results specialized to $S=1/2$ are relevant to spin-ladder systems.

Exact results for quantum phase transitions in random XY spin chains

The effect of disorder on the quantum phase transitions induced by a transverse field, anisotropy, and dimerization in XY spin chains is investigated. The low-energy behavior near the critical point is described by a Dirac-type equation with a random mass for which an exact analytic treatment is possible. Results obtained for the dynamical critical exponent, the specific heat, and transverse susceptibility agree with results recently obtained using a real space renormalization group decimation technique, supporting Fisher's claim that it is exact. A non-zero transverse field changes the universality class of the anisotropy transition.

Electric field scaling at a B=0 metal-insulator transition in two dimensions

The non-linear (electric field-dependent) resistivity of the 2D electron system in silicon exhibits scaling as a function of electric field and electron density in both the metallic and insulating phases, providing further evidence for a true metal-insulator transition in this 2D system at B=0. Comparison with the temperature scaling yields separate determinations of the correlation length exponent, ν=1.5, and the dynamical exponent, z=0.8, close to the theoretical value z=1.

Re-entrance of the metallic conductance in a mesoscopic proximity superconductor

We present an experimental study of the diffusive transport in a normal metal near a superconducting interface, showing the re-entrance of the metallic conductance at very low temperature. This new mesoscopic regime comes in when the thermal coherence length of the electron pairs exceeds the sample size. This re-entrance is suppressed by a bias voltage given by the Thouless energy and can be strongly enhanced by an Aharonov Bohm flux. Experimental results are well described by the linearized quasiclassical theory.

Dynamical Phase Transition in a Driven Disordered Vortex Lattice

Using Langevin dynamics, we have investigated the dynamics of vortices in a disordered two dimensional superconductor subjected to a uniform driving current. The results provide direct numerical evidence for a dynamical phase transition between a plastic flow regime and a moving ``hexatic glass." The simulated current-voltage characteristics are in excellent agreement with recent transport measurements on amorphous ${\rm Mo_{77}Ge_{23}}$ thin film superconductors.
