remage: a Geant4-based simulation framework for low-background experiments

Abstract

Monte Carlo simulations are an essential tool for data modeling and experimental design in low-background physics. These simulations typically demand a considerable effort, with each collaboration developing and maintaining its own complex Geant4 application. In this paper we present the design and validation of remage, which is an open-source framework designed to standardize these simulations and significantly reduce this effort. Its design separates the geometry, built with dedicated Python tools, from the compiled application. It provides a physics list and event generators tuned to radiogenic and cosmogenic backgrounds, output tailored to the most common detector types, and robust validation backed by modern software development practices. The software is distributed ready to use and scales efficiently with the computing resources that demanding simulations require. remage has been primarily developed for the LEGEND experiment, but is applicable to a wide variety of experiments.

A Reproducible Benchmark and Evidence-Retrieval Software Framework for Silicon Detector R&D Literature

Silicon pixel detector R&D depends on a large and rapidly growing technical literature, including beam-test and irradiation studies, performance measurements, simulation, and design reports. Locating the supporting evidence passage for a measurement, operating condition, or design decision is therefore a computing and data-science challenge for detector-development workflows. General-purpose language models are insufficient unless grounded in traceable primary sources, particularly in a domain with specialised terminology, configuration-dependent measurements, and rapidly evolving experimental results. We address this with a reproducible, general-purpose framework for evidence-grounded retrieval over technical literature, using silicon pixel detector R&D as a demanding validation domain. The framework combines sparse lexical retrieval, dense semantic retrieval, and hybrid reciprocal-rank fusion, with an optional graph-guided exploration layer and grounded, abstention-aware response generation. The accompanying benchmark provides manually curated chunk-level evidence annotations, source-level diagnostics, semantic relevance checks, and negative-query abstention tests over two detector query sets. We evaluate six retrieval configurations across 378 source documents and 8,442 indexed chunks. Hybrid sparse-dense retrieval gives the strongest strict evidence recovery, achieving Hit@5 of 0.917 on the core benchmark and 0.951 on the curated extension benchmark, while graph-based methods are more effective for literature exploration and source discovery. Graph expansion is therefore best employed as a discovery layer over the hybrid retrieval backbone. The framework provides reusable software for traceable, 1 evidence-grounded knowledge access in silicon detector R&D and high-energy physics instrumentation.

Recent upgrades to the CRIS Decay Spectroscopy Station: Accessing $β$- and $γ$-ray spectroscopy on pure isomeric beams

The Decay Spectroscopy Station (DSS) of the Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy (CRIS) experiment at ISOLDE-CERN has been upgraded to perform isomer-selective $β$- and $γ$-ray spectroscopy, including a new tape system to perform spectroscopy, free from residual activity. The baseplate of the detection chamber was redesigned to incorporate the tape, a MicroTOF detector for beam diagnostics, and a custom-made, high-vacuum-compatible plastic scintillator. The vacuum operation reached a stable pressure of $10^{-7}$ mbar in the detection chamber, overcoming vacuum issues from the previous design. Around the detection chamber, up to three high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors and four LaBr detectors can be installed, giving a total photopeak efficiency of the HPGe detectors of 7% at 200 keV. The implementation of a 24-channel digital DAQ system combines the detection array with the CRIS setup to perform laser-assisted $β$- and $γ$-ray spectroscopy. A commissioning experiment with isomeric beams of $^{106g,106m}$In, purified by narrow-band laser resonance ionization, showed complete removal of activity from the $β$ detector and full separation of the ground and isomeric state of $^{106}$In. An average $β$-detection efficiency of 19(2)% was determined from the experiment.

Cryogenic scintillation veto for $0\nu2β$ bolometric experiments: from a concept to BINGO prototypes

Achieving a very low, ideally zero, background level, along with ensuring high energy resolution and detection efficiency, are the main tasks in the development of the next generation of experiments to search for neutrinoless double beta ($0\nu2β$) decay. Cryogenic scintillating bolometers meet these basic requirements perfectly. The main ideas pursued in the BINGO (Bi-Isotope $0\nu2β$ Next Generation Observatory) project are the use of a cryogenic scintillation anti-coincidence veto, the minimization of the detector array passive materials, and the use of advanced cryogenic light detectors to reduce backgrounds from surface radioactivity and random signal coincidences. This article presents simulation results for detectors based on Li$_2$MoO$_4$ or TeO$_2$ surrounded by a 5-cm-thick active Bi$_4$Ge$_3$O$_{12}$ scintillation veto, demonstrating the potential to reduce the background by up to a factor of $10^3$, depending on the source location and the type of radionuclide. We further present results from the first cryogenic tests of a small scale prototype with respect to the feasibility of this proposed veto.
