A lattice based equation of state and $ϕ$ meson production in $\sqrt{s}$=6-200 GeV Pb+Pb and Au+Au collisions

In a boost-invariant hydrodynamic model, we have analyzed $ϕ$ meson production in Pb+Pb and Au+Au collisions, in the centre of mass energy range $\sqrt{s}$= 6-200 GeV. Hydrodynamic evolution is governed by a lattice based equation of state with a confinement-deconfinement {\em cross over} at $T_{co}$=196 MeV. We also look for the threshold energy above which the confined matter undergoes a deconfinement transition. Analysis indicate that above a threshold energy, ${\sqrt{s}}_{th}$=$13.65 \pm 3.06$ GeV, the fluid medium crosses over from a confined phase to a deconfined phase.

Equation of state dependence of Mach cone like structures in Au+Au collisions

In jet quenching, a hard QCD parton, before fragmenting into a jet of hadrons, deposits a fraction of its energy in the medium. As the parton moves nearly with speed of light, much greater that the speed of sound of the medium, quenching jet can generate Mach shock wave. We have examined the possibility of Mach shock wave formation due to jet quenching. Assuming that the deposited energy quickly thermalize, we simulate the hydrodynamic evolution of the QGP fluid with a quenching jet and subsequent particle production. Angular distribution of pions, averaged over all the jet trajectories, resembles 'conical flow' due to Mach shock wave formation. However, speed of sound dependence of the simulated Mach angles are at variance with that due to shock wave formation in a static medium or in a medium with finite velocity.

Nearly perfect fluid in Au+Au collisions at RHIC

In the Israel-Stewart's theory of dissipative hydrodynamics, we have analysed the STAR data on $ϕ$ meson production in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=200 GeV. From a simultaneous fit to $ϕ$ mesons multiplicity, mean $p_T$ and integrated $v_2$, we obtain a phenomenological estimate of QGP viscosity, $η/s =0.07 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.14$, the first error is due to the experimental uncertainty in STAR measurements, the second reflects the uncertainties in initial and final conditions of the fluid.

Hydrodynamical model for $J/ψ$ suppression and elliptic flow

In a hydrodynamic model, we have studied $J/ψ$ suppression and elliptic flow in Au+Au collisions at RHIC energy $\sqrt{s}$=200 GeV. At the initial time, $J/ψ$'s are randomly distributed in the fluid. As the fluid evolve in time, the free streaming $J/ψ$'s are dissolved if the local fluid temperature exceeds a melting temperature $T_{J/ψ}$. Sequential melting of charmonium states ($χ_c$, $ψ\prime$ and $J/ψ$), with melting temperatures $T_{χ_c}=T_{ψ\prime} \approx 1.2T_c$, $T_{J/ψ} \approx2T_c$ and feed-down fraction $F\approx 0.3$, is consistent with the PHENIX data on $J/ψ$ suppression and near zero elliptic flow for $J/ψ$'s. It is also shown that the model will require substantial regeneration of charmoniums, if the charmonium states dissolve at temperature close to the critical temperature, $T_{χ_c}=T_{ψ\prime} \leq T_c$, $T_{J/ψ}\approx1.2T_c$. The regenerated charmoniums will have positive elliptic flow.

An estimate of QGP viscosity from STAR data on $ϕ$ mesons

In the Israel-Stewart's theory of dissipative hydrodynamics, with a lattice based equation of state, where the confinement-deconfinement transition is a cross-over at $T_{co}$=196 MeV, we have analysed the STAR data on $ϕ$ meson production in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=200 GeV. From a simultaneous fit to $ϕ$ mesons multiplicity, mean $p_T$ and integrated $v_2$, we obtain a phenomenological estimate of QGP viscosity, $η/s =0.15 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.03$, the first error is due to the experimental uncertainty in STAR measurements, the second reflects the uncertainties in initial and final conditions of the fluid. A host of STAR data, e.g. $ϕ$ multiplicity, integrated $v_2$, mean $p_T$, $p_T$ spectra ($p_T <$3 GeV), in central Au+Au collisions, are consistent with the estimate of viscosity.

Viscous hydrodynamics description of $ϕ$ meson production in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions

In the Israel-Stewart's theory of 2nd order dissipative hydrodynamics, we have simulated $ϕ$ production in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s}_{NN}$=200 GeV. Evolution of QGP fluid with viscosity over the entropy ratio $η/s$=0.25, thermalised at $τ_i$=0.2 fm, with initial energy density $ε_i$=5.1 $GeV/fm^3$ explains the experimental data on $ϕ$ multiplicity, integrated $v_2$, mean $p_T$, $p_T$ spectra and elliptic flow in central and mid-central Au+Au collisions. $η/s$=0.25 is also consistent with centrality dependence of $ϕ$ $p_T$ spectra in Cu+Cu collisions. The central energy density in Cu+Cu collisions is $ε_i$=3.48 $GeV/fm^3$.

Multiplicity, mean $p_T$, $p_T$-spectra and elliptic flow of identified particles in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC

Israel-Stewart's causal theory of dissipative hydrodynamics, with the ADS/CFT lower limit of shear viscosity to entropy ratio ($η/s$=0.08), give consistent description of a number of experimental observables in Au+Au collisions at RHIC (c.m. energy $\sqrt{s}$=200 GeV) \cite{Chaudhuri:2008sj}. Assuming that in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC (c.m. energy $\sqrt{s}$=5.5 TeV), except for the initial temperature, other parameters of the fluid remain unchanged, we have predicted for the centrality dependence of multiplicity, mean $p_T$, $p_T$-spectra, elliptic flow. The central temperature of the fluid is adjusted to $T_i$=421 MeV such that in a Pb+Pb collision, with participant number $N_{part}$=350, average charge particle multiplicity is $\sim$ 900 and is consistent with the experimental trend observed at lower energies. Compare to Au+Au collisions at RHIC, in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC, on the average, particle multiplicity increases by a factor of $\sim$1.6, the mean $p_T$ is increased by $\sim$10% only. The elliptic flow on the other hand decreases by $\sim$15%.

$J/ψ$ suppression and $p_T$ spectra in RHIC and LHC energy collisions

In a hydrodynamic model, we have studied $J/ψ$ production in Au+Au/Cu+Cu collisions at RHIC energy $\sqrt{s}$=200 GeV. At the initial time, $J/ψ$'s are randomly distributed in the fluid. As the fluid evolve in time, the free streaming $J/ψ$'s are dissolved if the local fluid temperature exceeds a threshold temperature $T_{J/ψ}$. Sequential melting of charmonium states ($χ_c$, $ψ\prime$ and $J/ψ$), with melting temperatures $T_{χ_c}=T_{ψ\prime} \approx 1.2T_c$, $T_{J/ψ} \approx2T_c$ and feed-down fraction $F\approx 0.3$, explains the PHENIX data on the centrality dependence of $J/ψ$ suppression in Au+Au collisions. $J/ψ$ $p_T$ spectra and the nuclear modification factor in Au+Au collisions are also well explained in the model. The model however over predict centrality dependence of $J/ψ$ suppression in Cu+Cu collisions by 20-30%. The $J/ψ$ $p_T$ spectra are under predicted by 20-30%. The model predict that in central Pb+Pb collisions at LHC energy, $\sqrt{s}$=5500 GeV, $J/ψ$'s are suppressed by a factor of $\sim$ 10. The model predicted $J/ψ$ $p_T$ distribution in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC is similar to that in Au+Au collisions at RHIC.

Dissipative hydrodynamics and heavy ion collisions

Space-time evolution and subsequent particle production from minimally viscous ($η/s$=0.08) QGP fluid is studied using the 2nd order Israel-Stewart's theory of dissipative relativistic fluid. Compared to ideal fluid, energy density or temperature evolves slowly in viscous dynamics. Particle yield at high $p_T$ is increased. Elliptic flow on the other hand decreases in viscous dynamics. Minimally viscous QGP fluid found to be consistent with a large number of experimental data.

Sequential melting of charmonium states in an expanding Quark Gluon Plasma and $J/ψ$ suppression at RHIC and LHC energy collisions

We have developed a hydrodynamic model to study sequential melting of charmonium states in an expanding QGP medium. According to the initial fluid temperature profile, $J/ψ$'s are randomly distributed in the transverse plane. As the fluid evolve in time, the free streaming $J/ψ$'s are suppressed if the local fluid temperature exceed a critical temperature. PHENIX data on the centrality dependence of $J/ψ$ suppression in Au+Au collisions at mid-rapidity are explained by sequential melting of the charmonium states, $χ_c$, $ψ\prime$ and $J/ψ$, in the expanding medium. The critical temperatures $T_{J/ψ} \approx2.09T_c$ and $T_χ=T_{χ_c}=T_{ψ\prime} \approx 1.1T_c$ agree with lattice motivated calculations. The feed-down fraction $F$ depend on whether the cold nuclear matter effect is included or not. It changes from $F=0.3$ with cold nuclear matter effect included to $F=0.5$ when the effect is neglected. Model fails to reproduce the PHENIX data on the centrality dependence of $J/ψ$ suppression in Cu+Cu collisions at mid-rapidity, indicating that the mechanism of $J/ψ$ suppression is different in Au+Au and in Cu+Cu collisions. We also use the model to predict for the centrality dependence of $J/ψ$ suppression in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC energy, $\sqrt{s}$=5500 GeV. In LHC energy, $J/ψ$'s are more suppressed in mid central collisions than in Au+Au collisions at RHIC energy.

Viscous fluid dynamics in Au+Au collisions at RHIC

We have studied the space-time evolution of minimally viscous ($\fracη{s}$=0.08) QGP fluid, undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal motion and arbitrary transverse expansion. Relaxation equations for the shear stress tensor components, derived from the phenomenological Israel-Stewart's theory of dissipative relativistic fluid, are solved simultaneously with the energy-momentum conservation equations. Comparison of evolution of ideal and viscous fluid, both initialized under the similar conditions, e.g. same equilibration time, energy density and velocity profile, indicate that in viscous fluid, energy density or temperature of the fluid evolve slowly than in an ideal fluid. Transverse expansion is also more in viscous evolution. We have also studied particle production in viscous dynamics. Compared to ideal dynamics, in viscous dynamics, particle yield at high $p_T$ is increased. Elliptic flow on the other hand decreases. Minimally viscous QGP fluid, initialized at entropy density $s_{ini}$=110 $fm^{-3}$ at the initial time $τ_i$=0.6 fm, if freeze-out at temperature $T_F$=130 MeV, explains the centrality dependence of $p_T$ spectra of identified particles. Experimental $p_T$ spectra of $π^-$, $K^+$ and protons in 0-5%, 5-10%, 10-20%, 20-30%, 30-40% and 40-50% Au+Au collisions are well reproduced through out the experimental $p_T$ range. This is in contrast to ideal dynamics, where, the spectra are reproduced only up to $p_T\approx$1.5 GeV. Minimally viscous QGP fluid, also explain the elliptic flow in mid-central (10-20%, 16-23%, 20-30%) collisions. The minimum bias elliptic flow is also explained. However, the model under-predict/over-predict the elliptic flow in very central/peripheral collisions.

Di-jet hadron pair correlation in a hydrodynamical model with a quenching jet

In jet quenching, a hard QCD parton, before fragmenting into a jet of hadrons, deposits a fraction of its energy in the medium, leading to suppressed production of high-$p_T$ hadrons. Assuming that the deposited energy quickly thermalizes, we simulate the subsequent hydrodynamic evolution of the QGP fluid. Hydrodynamic evolution and subsequent particle emission depend on the jet trajectories. Azimuthal distribution of excess $π^-$ due to quenching jet, averaged over all the trajectories, reasonably well reproduce the di-hadron correlation as measured by the STAR and PHENIX collaboration in central and in peripheral Au+Au collisions.

$J/ψ$ suppression in the threshold model at RHIC and LHC energy

In the QGP based threshold model \cite{Blaizot:2000ev,Blaizot:1996nq}, in addition to the normal nuclear absorption, $J/ψ$'s are subjected to an 'anomalous' suppression such that above a threshold density $n_{J/ψ}$, all the $J/ψ$'s are melted. In the threshold model we have analysed the recent PHENIX data on the centrality dependence of $J/ψ$ suppression in Au+Au collisions at RHIC. Feedback from decay of the state $χ$ is accounted for. $J/ψ$'s are anomalously suppressed above a threshold density, $n_{J/ψ}=3.57\pm 0.17$ $fm^{-2}$. Threshold density for anomalous suppression of the state $χ$ is uncertain to a large extent, $n_χ=0.32 \pm 0.32$ $fm^{-2}$. The fraction $F$ of the state $χ$ can not be determined unambiguously, depending on the nuclear absorption, it can vary from 20% to 40%. We have also predicted for the suppression in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC energy. In central Pb+Pb collisions, $J/ψ$'s are suppressed by a factor of 3-4. Suppression pattern is rather similar to that in Au+Au collisions, if not slighty less in central collisions. Using the PHENIX data on the participant number dependence of the Bjorken energy density, we have also estimated the QGP formation time. For critical temperature $T_c$=192 MeV, estimated QGP formation time ranges between 0.07-0.09 fm/c.

Saturation of elliptic flow and shear viscosity

Effect of shear viscosity on elliptic flow is studied in causal dissipative hydrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions. Elliptic flow is reduced in viscous dynamics. Causal evolution of minimally viscous fluid ($η/s$=0.08), can explain the PHENIX data on elliptic flow in 16-23% Au+Au collisions up to $p_T\approx$3.6 GeV. In contrast, ideal hydrodynamics, can explain the same data only up to $p_T\approx$1.5 GeV. $p_T$ spectra of identified particles are also better explained in minimally viscous fluid than in ideal dynamics. However, saturation of elliptic flow at large $p_T$ is not reproduced.

$J/ψ$ suppression in the threshold model and QGP formation time

In the QGP motivated threshold model, in addition to the normal nuclear absorption, $J/ψ$'s are subjected to an additional "anomalous" suppression. We have analysed the recently published PHENIX data on the participant number dependence of the nuclear modification factor for $J/ψ$'s in Au+Au collisions and extracted the anomalous suppression required to explain the data. At mid rapidity $J/ψ$'s are anomalously suppressed only above a threshold density $n_c$=3.73 fm$^{-2}$. The forward rapidity data on the otherhand require that $J/ψ$'s are continuously "anomalously" suppressed. The analysis strongly indicate that in mid rapidity $J/ψ$'s are suppressed in a deconfined medium. Using the PHENIX data on the participant number dependence of the Bjorken energy density, we have also estimated the QGP formation time. For critical temperature $T_c$=192 MeV, estimated QGP formation time ranges between 0.06-0.08 fm/c.

Jet quenching and elliptic flow

In jet quenching, a hard QCD parton, before fragmenting into a jet of hadrons, deposits a fraction of its energy in the medium, leading to suppressed production of high-$p_T$ hadrons. Assuming that the deposited energy quickly thermalizes, we simulate the subsequent hydrodynamic evolution of the QGP fluid. Explicit simulation of Au+Au collision with and without a quenching jet indicate that elliptic flow is greatly reduced in a jet event. The result can be used to identify the jet events in heavy ion collisions.

Causal dissipative hydrodynamics for QGP fluid in 2+1 dimensions

In 2nd order causal dissipative theory, space-time evolution of QGP fluid is studied in 2+1 dimensions. Relaxation equations for shear stress tensors are solved simultaneously with the energy-momentum conservation equations. Comparison of evolution of ideal and viscous QGP fluid, initialized under the same conditions, e.g. same equilibration time, energy density and velocity profile, indicate that in a viscous dynamics, energy density or temperature of the fluid evolve slowly, than in an ideal fluid. Cooling gets slower as viscosity increases. Transverse expansion also increases in a viscous dynamics. For the first time we have also studied elliptic flow of 'quarks' in causal viscous dynamics. It is shown that elliptic flow of quarks saturates due to non-equilibrium correction to equilibrium distribution function, and can not be mimicked by an ideal hydrodynamics.
