First measurement of D$^{*+}$ vector spin alignment in Pb$-$Pb collisions at $\mathbf{\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02}$ TeV

The first measurement of prompt D$^{*+}$-meson spin alignment in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions with respect to the direction orthogonal to the reaction plane is presented. The spin alignment is quantified by measuring the element $ρ_{00}$ of the diagonal spin-density matrix for prompt D$^{*+}$ mesons with $4 1/3$ has been found for $p_{\rm T}>15$ GeV/$c$ and $0.3<|y|<0.8$ with a significance of $3.1σ$. The measured spin alignment of prompt D$^{*+}$ mesons is compared with the one of inclusive J$/ψ$ mesons measured at forward rapidity ($2.5 < y < 4$).

Exploring nuclear structure with multiparticle azimuthal correlations at the LHC

Details of the nuclear structure of $^{\rm 129}$Xe, such as the quadrupole deformation and the nuclear diffuseness, are studied by extensive measurements of anisotropic-flow-related observables in Xe--Xe collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}}~=~5.44$ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The results are compared with those from Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}}~=~5.02$ TeV for a baseline, given that the $^{\rm 208}$Pb nucleus exhibits a very weak deformation. Furthermore, comprehensive comparisons are performed with a state-of-the-art hybrid model using IP-Glasma+MUSIC+UrQMD. It is found that among various IP-Glasma+MUSIC+UrQMD calculations with different values of nuclear parameters, the one using a nuclear diffuseness parameter of $a_0=0.492$ and a nuclear quadrupole deformation parameter of $β_2=0.207$ provides a better description of the presented flow measurements. These studies represent the first systematic exploration of nuclear structure at TeV energies, utilizing a comprehensive set of anisotropic flow observables. The measurements serve as a critical experimental benchmark for rigorously testing the interplay between nuclear structure inputs and heavy-ion theoretical models.

First measurement of symmetric cumulants of hexagonal flow harmonics in Pb$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

Correlations between event-by-event fluctuations of anisotropic flow harmonics are measured in Pb$-$Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV, as recorded by the ALICE detector at the LHC. This study presents correlations up to the hexagonal flow harmonic, $v_6$, which was measured for the first time. The magnitudes of these higher-order correlations are found to vary as a function of collision centrality and harmonic order. These measurements are compared to viscous hydrodynamic model calculations with EKRT initial conditions and to the iEBE-VISHNU model with TRENTo initial conditions. The observed discrepancies between the data and the model calculations vary depending on the harmonic combinations. Due to the sensitivity of model parameters estimated with Bayesian analyses to these higher-order observables, the results presented in this work provide new and independent constraints on the initial conditions and transport properties in theoretical models used to describe the system created in heavy-ion collisions.

Measurement of $ω$ meson production in pp and p$-$Pb collisions at $\mathbf{\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02}$ TeV

We present the measurement of the $p_{\rm T}$-differential production cross section of $ω$ mesons in pp and p$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV at midrapidity by ALICE. In addition, the first measurement of the nuclear modification factor $R_{\text{pPb}}$ for $ω$ mesons at LHC energies is presented, complementing the existing measurements of lighter neutral mesons such as the $π^0$ and $η$. Within the measured $p_{\rm T}$-range, the $R_{\text{pPb}}$ of $ω$ mesons is compatible with no cold nuclear matter effects within the uncertainties, consistent with previous measurements at lower energies. The $ω/π^0$ ratio is presented for both collision systems, showing no collision system dependence within the uncertainties. The comparison to previously published $ω/π^0$ ratios at lower and higher collision energies in pp collisions suggests a decreasing trend of the ratio above $p_{\rm T}=~4 $ GeV/$c$ with increasing collision energy. The data in both collision systems are compared to predictions from PYTHIA, EPOS LHC and DPMJET event generators, revealing significant shortcomings in these models' ability to describe the production of $ω$ mesons.

Observation of the $Ω$(2012) baryon at the LHC

A signal consistent with the $Ω$(2012) baryon has been observed with a significance of $15σ$ in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV at the LHC. In this paper, the analysis technique is described and measurements of the mass and width of the $Ω$(2012) are reported, along with the first measurement of its transverse-momentum spectrum and yield. This paper corroborates the observation by Belle of this excited $Ω$ state and the observation that the $Ω$(2012) has a rather narrow width for a strongly decaying resonance. The yield measurement is combined with a statistical thermal model calculation of strange baryon yield ratios to obtain estimates of the $Ω{\rm (2012)}^{-} \rightarrow Ξ\overline{\rm K}$ branching ratios. These results will improve our understanding of the internal structure and mass spectrum of excited baryon states and serve as a baseline for searches regarding modifications of these properties in high-temperature media.

Measurements of differential two-particle number and transverse momentum correlation functions in pp collisions at $\sqrt{\textit{s}}$ = 13 TeV

Differential two-particle normalized cumulants ($R_2$) and transverse momentum correlations ($P_2$) are measured as a function of the relative pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle difference $( Δη, Δφ)$ of charged particle pairs in minimum bias pp collisions at $\sqrt{\textit{s}}$ = 13 TeV. The measurements use charged hadrons in the pseudorapidity region of $|η| < 0.8$ and the transverse momentum range \mbox{0.2 $< \textit{p}_{\mathrm T} < $ 2.0 $\mathrm{GeV}/\textit{c}$} in order to focus on soft multiparticle interactions and to complement prior measurements of these correlation functions in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions. The correlation functions are reported for both unlike-sign and like-sign pairs and their charge-independent and charge-dependent combinations. Both the $R_2$ and $P_2$ measured in pp collisions exhibit features qualitatively similar to those observed in p--Pb and Pb--Pb collisions. The $Δη$ and $Δφ$ root mean square widths of the near-side peak of the correlation functions are evaluated and compared with those observed in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions and show smooth evolution with the multiplicity of charged particles produced in the collision. The comparison of the measured correlation functions with predictions from PYTHIA8 shows that this model qualitatively captures their basic structure and characteristics but feature important differences. In addition, the $R_2^{\rm CD}$ is used to determine the charge balance function of hadrons produced within the detector acceptance of the measurements. The integral of the balance function is found to be compatible with those reported by a previous measurement in Pb--Pb collisions.

Charged-particle multiplicity distributions over a wide pseudorapidity range in p-Pb collisions at $\mathbf{\sqrt{s}_{\rm NN} = 5.02}$ TeV

This paper presents the primary charged-particle multiplicity distributions in proton-lead collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision of $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV. The distributions are reported for non-single diffractive collisions in different pseudorapidity ranges. The measurements are performed using the combined information from the Silicon Pixel Detector and the Forward Multiplicity Detector of ALICE. The multiplicity distributions are parametrised with a double negative binomial distribution function which provides satisfactory descriptions of the distributions for all the studied pseudorapidity intervals. The data are compared to models and analysed quantitatively, evaluating the first four moments (mean, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis). The shape evolution of the measured multiplicity distributions is studied in terms of KNO variables and it is found that none of the considered models reproduces the measurements. This paper also reports on the average charged-particle multiplicity, normalised by the average number of participating nucleon pairs, as a function of the collision energy. The multiplicity results are then compared to measurements made in proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus collisions across a wide range of collision energies.

First direct access to the $ρ^0$p interaction via correlation studies at the LHC

Direct measurements of the $ρ^0$p interaction have remained so far elusive, with most insights derived indirectly from photoproduction or low-energy partial wave analyses. This letter presents the first direct observation of the $ρ^0$p interaction, obtained through two-particle correlations measured in high-multiplicity, ultrarelativistic proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV by the ALICE Collaboration at the LHC. Two-particle correlation data, analyzed within chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT) using a coupled-channel approach and incorporating recent $ϕ$-p data, yield a scattering length of $a_{ρ^0p} = (-0.46 \pm 0.04) + i(0.20 \pm 0.04)$ fm and constrain coupling strengths of two states identified with the N(1958) and N(1700). These findings emphasize the importance of coupled-channel dynamics and dynamically generated states in understanding the $ρ^0$p interaction. The results establish a vacuum baseline for extrapolation studies to high densities, contributing to the foundation for chiral symmetry restoration searches, and offer collider-based insights into the QCD spectrum, complementing traditional low-energy approaches. This work marks a significant advance in correlation studies, extending the exploration of interactions to the most short-lived QCD states.

J/$ψ$-hadron correlations at midrapidity in pp collisions at $\mathbf{\sqrt{\it s}}$ = 13 TeV

We report on the measurement of inclusive, non-prompt, and prompt J/$ψ$-hadron correlations by the ALICE Collaboration at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $13~\text{TeV}$. The correlations are studied at midrapidity ($|y| < 0.9$) in the transverse momentum ranges $p_{\rm T} < 40~\text{GeV}/c$ for the J/$ψ$ and $0.15 < p_{\rm T} < 10~\text{GeV}/c$ and $|η|<0.9$ for the associated hadrons. The measurement is based on minimum bias and high multiplicity data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of $L_{\text{int}} = 34~\text{nb}^{-1}$ and $L_{\text{int}} = 6.9~\text{pb}^{-1}$, respectively. In addition, two more data samples are employed, requiring, on top of the minimum bias condition, a threshold on the tower energy of $E = 4$ and $9~\text{GeV}$ in the ALICE electromagnetic calorimeters, which correspond to integrated luminosities of $L_{\text{int}} = 0.9~\text{pb}^{-1}$ and $L_{\text{int}} = 8.4~\text{pb}^{-1}$, respectively. The azimuthally integrated near and away side yields of associated charged hadrons per J/$ψ$ trigger are presented as a function of the J/$ψ$ and associated hadron transverse momentum. The measurements are discussed in comparison to PYTHIA calculations.

Studying charm hadronisation into baryons with azimuthal correlations of $Λ_{\rm c}^{+}$ with charged particles in pp collisions at $\mathbf{\sqrt{\it s} = 13}$ TeV

The distribution of angular correlations between prompt charm hadrons and primary charged particles in pp collisions is sensitive to the charm-quark hadronisation process. In this letter, charm-baryon correlations are measured for the first time by studying the azimuthal-angle difference between charged particles and prompt $Λ_{\rm c}^{+}$ baryons produced in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV, with the ALICE detector. $Λ_{\rm c}^{+}$ baryons are reconstructed at midrapidity ($|y| < 0.5$) in the transverse-momentum interval $3 < p_{\rm T} < 16$ GeV/$c$, and correlated with charged particles with $p_{\rm T} > 0.3$ GeV/$c$ and pseudorapidity $|η| < 0.8$. For $3< p_{\rm T}^{Λ_{\rm c}^{+},{\rm D}} <5$ GeV/$c$, the comparison with published measurements of D-meson and charged-particle correlations in the same collision system hints at a larger number of low-momentum particles associated with $Λ_{\rm c}^{+}$-baryon triggers than with D-meson triggers, both in the collinear and opposite directions with respect to the trigger particle. These differences can be quantified by the comparison of the properties of the near- and away-side correlation peaks, and are not reproduced by predictions of various Monte Carlo event generators, generally underpredicting the associated particle yields at $p_{\rm T}^{\rm assoc}<1$ GeV/$c$. This tension between $Λ_{\rm c}^{+}$-baryon and D-meson associated peak yields could suggest a modified fragmentation of the charm quark, or a different hadronisation process, when a charm baryon is produced in the final state.

Search for quasi-particle scattering in the quark-gluon plasma with jet splittings in pp and Pb$-$Pb collisions at $\mathbf{\sqrt{\textit{s}_{\rm NN}} = 5.02}$ TeV

The ALICE Collaboration reports measurements of the large relative transverse momentum ($k_{\text{T}}$) component of jet substructure in pp and Pb$-$Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=5.02$ TeV. Enhancement in the yield of such large-$k_{\text{T}}$ emissions in head-on Pb$-$Pb collisions is predicted to arise from partonic scattering with quasi-particles of the quark-gluon plasma. The analysis utilizes charged-particle jets reconstructed by the anti-$k_{\text{T}}$ algorithm with resolution parameter $R=0.2$ in the transverse-momentum interval $60 < p_{\text{T,ch jet}} < 80$ GeV/$c$. The soft drop and dynamical grooming algorithms are used to identify high transverse momentum splittings in the jet shower. Comparison of measurements in Pb$-$Pb and pp collisions shows medium-induced narrowing, corresponding to yield suppression of high-$k_{\text{T}}$ splittings, in contrast to the expectation of yield enhancement due to quasi-particle scattering. The measurements are compared to theoretical model calculations incorporating jet modification due to jet-medium interactions ("jet quenching"), both with and without quasi-particle scattering effects. These measurements provide new insight into the underlying mechanisms and theoretical modeling of jet quenching.

Higher-order symmetry plane correlations in Pb$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{{\it s}_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The correlations between event-by-event fluctuations of symmetry planes are measured in Pb--Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV recorded by the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. This analysis is conducted using the Gaussian Estimator technique, which is insensitive to biases from correlations between different flow amplitudes. The study presents, for the first time, the centrality dependence of correlations involving up to five different symmetry planes. The correlation strength varies depending on the harmonic order of the symmetry plane and the collision centrality. Comparisons with measurements from lower energies indicate no significant differences within uncertainties. Additionally, the results are compared with hydrodynamic model calculations. Although the model predictions provide a qualitative explanation of the experimental results, they overestimate the data for some observables. This is particularly true for correlators that are sensitive to the non-linear response of the medium to initial-state anisotropies in the collision system. As these new correlators provide unique information -- independent of flow amplitudes -- their usage in future model developments can further constrain the properties of the strongly-interacting matter created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions.

System size and energy dependence of the mean transverse momentum fluctuations at the LHC

Event-by-event fluctuations of the event-wise mean transverse momentum, $\langle p_{\mathrm{T}}\rangle$, of charged particles produced in proton$-$proton (pp) collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV, Xe$-$Xe collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} =$ 5.44 TeV, and Pb$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} =$ 5.0 TeV are studied using the ALICE detector based on the integral correlator $\langle\langle Δp_{\rm T}Δp_{\rm T}\rangle\rangle $. The correlator strength is found to decrease monotonically with increasing produced charged-particle multiplicity measured at midrapidity in all three systems. In Xe$-$Xe and Pb$-$Pb collisions, the multiplicity dependence of the correlator deviates significantly from a simple power-law scaling as well as from the predictions of the HIJING and AMPT models. The observed deviation from power-law scaling is expected from transverse radial flow in semicentral to central Xe$-$Xe and Pb$-$Pb collisions. In pp collisions, the correlation strength is also studied by classifying the events based on the transverse spherocity, $S_0$, of the particle production at midrapidity, used as a proxy for the presence of a pronounced back-to-back jet topology. Low-spherocity (jetty) events feature a larger correlation strength than those with high spherocity (isotropic). The strength and multiplicity dependence of jetty and isotropic events are well reproduced by calculations with the PYTHIA 8 and EPOS LHC models.

Search for a common baryon source in high-multiplicity pp collisions at the LHC

We report on the measurement of the size of the particle-emitting source from two-baryon correlations with ALICE in high-multiplicity pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The source radius is studied with low relative momentum p-p, $\bar{\rm{p}}$-$\bar{\rm{p}}$, p-$Λ$ and $\bar{\rm{p}}$-$\barΛ$ pairs as a function of the pair transverse mass $m_{\rm{T}}$ considering for the first time in a quantitative way the effect of strong resonance decays. After correcting for this effect, the radii extracted for pairs of different particle species agree. This indicates that protons, antiprotons, $Λ$, and $\barΛ$ originate from the same source. Within the measured $m_{\rm{T}}$ range (1.1-2.2) GeV/$c^{2}$ the invariant radius of this common source varies between 0.85 and 1.3 fm. These results provide a precise reference for studies of the strong hadron-hadron interactions and for the investigation of collective properties in small colliding systems.

Direct-photon production in inelastic and high-multiplicity proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

In this letter, we present the first measurement of direct photons at the transverse momentum of $ 1 < p_{\rm T} < 6$ GeV/$c$ at midrapidity $|η| < 0.8$ in inelastic and high-multiplicity proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV. The fraction of virtual direct photons in the inclusive virtual photon spectrum is obtained from a fit to the dielectron invariant mass spectrum. In the limit of zero invariant mass, this fraction is equal to the relative contribution of real direct photons in the inclusive real photon spectrum. Contributions from decays of light-flavour neutral mesons are estimated using independent measurements in proton-proton collisions at the same energy and the same event class. For the first time at the LHC energies, a direct-photon signal is observed at low $p_{\rm T}$ in both inelastic and high-multiplicity event classes, with a significance of 3.2$σ$ and 1.9$σ$ in terms of standard deviations, correspondingly. The yield of direct photons in inelastic pp collisions is compared to perturbative QCD calculations. The integrated photon yield is studied as a function of charged-particle multiplicity and is compared to the results from other experiments and theoretical calculations. The results show a significant increase of direct-photon yield with charged-particle multiplicity.

First measurement of $\mathrm{D_{s1}}(1^{+})(2536)^+$ and $\mathrm{D_{s2}^{*}(2^{+})(2573)^+}$ production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV at the LHC

The production yields of the orbitally excited charm-strange mesons $\mathrm{D_{s1}(1^{+})(2536)^+}$ and $\mathrm{D_{s2}^{*}(2^{+})(2573)^+}$were measured for the first time in proton-proton (pp) collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The $\mathrm{D_{s1}^+}$ and $\mathrm{D_{s2}^{*+}}$ mesons were measured at midrapidity ($|y|<0.5$) in minimum-bias and high-multiplicity pp collisions in the transverse-momentum interval $2<p_{\rm T}<24$ GeV/$c$. Their production yields relative to the $\mathrm{D_{s}^{+}}$ ground-state yield were found to be compatible between minimum-bias and high-multiplicity collisions, as well as with previous measurements in ${\rm e}^{\pm}$p and ${\rm e^+ e^-}$ collisions. The measured $\mathrm{D_{s1}^+/D_{s}^{+}}$ and $\mathrm{D_{s2}^{*+}/D_{s}^{+}}$ yield ratios are described by statistical hadronization models and can be used to tune the parameters governing the production of excited charm-strange hadrons in Monte Carlo generators, such as PYTHIA 8.

Measurement of the cross sections of $Ξ^0_{\rm c}$ and $Ξ^+_{\rm c}$ baryons and branching-fraction ratio BR($Ξ^0_{\rm c} \rightarrow Ξ^-{\rm e}^+ν_{\rm e}$)/BR($Ξ^0_{\rm c} \rightarrow Ξ^-π^+$) in pp collisions at 13 TeV

The $p_{\rm T}$-differential cross sections of prompt charm-strange baryons $Ξ^0_{\rm c}$ and $Ξ^+_{\rm c}$ were measured at midrapidity ($|y| < 0.5$) in proton-proton (pp) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=$~13~TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The $Ξ^0_{\rm c}$ baryon was reconstructed via both the semileptonic decay ($Ξ^{-}{\rm e^{+}}ν_{\rm e}$) and the hadronic decay ($Ξ^{-}{\rm π^{+}}$) channels. The $Ξ^+_{\rm c}$ baryon was reconstructed via the hadronic decay ($Ξ^{-}π^{+}π^{+}$) channel. The branching-fraction ratio $\rm {\rm BR}(Ξ_c^0\rightarrow~ Ξ^-e^+ν_e)/\rm {\rm BR}(Ξ_c^0\rightarrow Ξ^{-}π^+)=$ 0.95 $\pm$ 0.15 (stat) $\pm$ 0.16 (syst) was consistent with the Belle's result within 1$σ$. The transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) dependence of the $Ξ^0_{\rm c}$- and $Ξ^+_{\rm c}$-baryon production relative to the ${\rm D^0}$-meson and to the $Σ^{0,+,++}_{\rm c}$- and $Λ^+_{\rm c}$-baryon production are reported. The baryon-to-meson ratio increases towards low $p_{\rm T}$ up to a value of approximately 0.3. The measurements are compared with various models that take different hadronisation mechanisms into consideration. The results provide stringent constraints to these theoretical calculations and additional evidence that different processes are involved in charm hadronisation in electron-positron ($\rm e^+e^-$) and hadronic collisions.

Multiplicity-dependent jet modification from di-hadron correlations in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV

Short-range correlations between charged particles are studied via two-particle angular correlations in pp collisions at ${\sqrt{\textit s}}=13$~TeV. The correlation functions are measured as a function of the relative azimuthal angle $Δφ$ and the pseudorapidity separation $Δη$ for pairs of primary charged particles within the pseudorapidity interval $|η| < 0.9$ and the transverse-momentum range $1 < p_{\rm T} < 8$ GeV/$c$. Near-side ($|Δφ|<1.3$) peak widths are extracted from a generalised Gaussian fitted over the correlations in full pseudorapidity separation ($|Δη|<1.8$), while the per-trigger associated near-side yields are extracted for the short-range correlations ($|Δη|<1.3$). Both are evaluated as a function of charged-particle multiplicity obtained by two different event activity estimators. The width of the near-side peak decreases with increasing multiplicity, and this trend is reproduced qualitatively by the Monte Carlo event generators PYTHIA 8, AMPT, and EPOS. However, the models overestimate the width in the low transverse-momentum region ($p_{\rm T} < 3$ GeV/$c$). The per-trigger associated near-side yield increases with increasing multiplicity. Although this trend is also captured qualitatively by the considered event generators, the yield is mostly overestimated by the models in the considered kinematic range. The measurement of the shape and yield of the short-range correlation peak can help us understand the interplay between jet fragmentation and event activity, quantify the narrowing trend of the near-side peak as a function of transverse momentum and multiplicity selections in pp collisions, and search for final-state jet modification in small collision systems.
