Noisy Text Data: Achilles' Heel of BERT

Owing to the phenomenal success of BERT on various NLP tasks and benchmark datasets, industry practitioners are actively experimenting with fine-tuning BERT to build NLP applications for solving industry use cases. For most datasets that are used by practitioners to build industrial NLP applications, it is hard to guarantee absence of any noise in the data. While BERT has performed exceedingly well for transferring the learnings from one use case to another, it remains unclear how BERT performs when fine-tuned on noisy text. In this work, we explore the sensitivity of BERT to noise in the data. We work with most commonly occurring noise (spelling mistakes, typos) and show that this results in significant degradation in the performance of BERT. We present experimental results to show that BERT's performance on fundamental NLP tasks like sentiment analysis and textual similarity drops significantly in the presence of (simulated) noise on benchmark datasets viz. IMDB Movie Review, STS-B, SST-2. Further, we identify shortcomings in the existing BERT pipeline that are responsible for this drop in performance. Our findings suggest that practitioners need to be vary of presence of noise in their datasets while fine-tuning BERT to solve industry use cases.

hinglishNorm -- A Corpus of Hindi-English Code Mixed Sentences for Text Normalization

We present hinglishNorm -- a human annotated corpus of Hindi-English code-mixed sentences for text normalization task. Each sentence in the corpus is aligned to its corresponding human annotated normalized form. To the best of our knowledge, there is no corpus of Hindi-English code-mixed sentences for text normalization task that is publicly available. Our work is the first attempt in this direction. The corpus contains 13494 parallel segments. Further, we present baseline normalization results on this corpus. We obtain a Word Error Rate (WER) of 15.55, BiLingual Evaluation Understudy (BLEU) score of 71.2, and Metric for Evaluation of Translation with Explicit ORdering (METEOR) score of 0.50.

Electron-phonon coupling in APd3O4: A = Ca, Sr, and Sr0.85Li0.15

Here we have investigated the role of electron-phonon coupling on the Raman spectrum of narrow bandgap semiconductors APd3O4 (A = Ca, Sr) and hole-doped system Sr0.85Li0.15Pd3O4. Four Raman active phonons are observed at room temperature for all three compounds as predicted by factor group analysis. The lowest energy phonon (~190/202 cm-1) associated with Pd vibrations is observed to exhibit an asymmetric Fano-like lineshape in all the three compounds, indicating the presence of an interaction between the phonon and the electronic continuum. The origin of the electronic continuum states and electron-phonon coupling are discussed based on our laser power- and temperature-dependent Raman results. We have observed an enhanced strength of electron-phonon coupling in Sr0.85Li0.15Pd3O4 at low temperatures which can be attributed to the metallicity in this doped compound.

Warm dense matter and cooling of supernovae remnants

We study the thermal effects on the nuclear matter (NM) properties such as binding energy, incompressibility, free symmetry energy and its coefficients using NL3, G3 and IU-FSU parameter sets of relativistic mean-field models. These models being consistent with the properties of cold NM, have also been used to study the effect of temperature by incorporating the Fermi function. The critical temperature for the liquid-gas phase transition in the symmetric NM is found to be 14.60, 15.37 and 14.50 MeV for NL3, G3 and IU-FSU parameter sets respectively, which is in excellent agreement with previous theoretical and experimental studies. We inspect that the properties related to second differential coefficient of the binding energy and free symmetry energy at saturation density ( i.e. K 0 (n, T ) and Q sym,0) exhibit the contrary effects for NL3 and G3 parameters as the temperature increases. We find that the prediction of saturated curvature parameter ( K sym,0 ) for G3 equation of state at finite temperature favour the combined analysis of K sym,0 for the existence of massive pulsars, gravitational waves from GW170817 and NICER observations of PSR J0030+0451. Further, we investigate the cooling mechanism of newly born stars through neutrino emissivity controlled by direct Urca process and instate some interesting remarks about neutrino emissivity. We also deliberate the effect of temperature on the M-R profile of Proto-Neutron star.

Zero-Shot Heterogeneous Transfer Learning from Recommender Systems to Cold-Start Search Retrieval

Many recent advances in neural information retrieval models, which predict top-K items given a query, learn directly from a large training set of (query, item) pairs. However, they are often insufficient when there are many previously unseen (query, item) combinations, often referred to as the cold start problem. Furthermore, the search system can be biased towards items that are frequently shown to a query previously, also known as the 'rich get richer' (a.k.a. feedback loop) problem. In light of these problems, we observed that most online content platforms have both a search and a recommender system that, while having heterogeneous input spaces, can be connected through their common output item space and a shared semantic representation. In this paper, we propose a new Zero-Shot Heterogeneous Transfer Learning framework that transfers learned knowledge from the recommender system component to improve the search component of a content platform. First, it learns representations of items and their natural-language features by predicting (item, item) correlation graphs derived from the recommender system as an auxiliary task. Then, the learned representations are transferred to solve the target search retrieval task, performing query-to-item prediction without having seen any (query, item) pairs in training. We conduct online and offline experiments on one of the world's largest search and recommender systems from Google, and present the results and lessons learned. We demonstrate that the proposed approach can achieve high performance on offline search retrieval tasks, and more importantly, achieved significant improvements on relevance and user interactions over the highly-optimized production system in online experiments.

Hands-off Model Integration in Spatial Index Structures

Spatial indexes are crucial for the analysis of the increasing amounts of spatial data, for example generated through IoT applications. The plethora of indexes that has been developed in recent decades has primarily been optimised for disk. With increasing amounts of memory even on commodity machines, however, moving them to main memory is an option. Doing so opens up the opportunity to use additional optimizations that are only amenable to main memory. In this paper we thus explore the opportunity to use light-weight machine learning models to accelerate queries on spatial indexes. We do so by exploring the potential of using interpolation and similar techniques on the R-tree, arguably the most broadly used spatial index. As we show in our experimental analysis, the query execution time can be reduced by up to 60% while simultaneously shrinking the index's memory footprint by over 90%

Imaging the topological current carrying state and the surface to bulk transformation, in Bi2Se3 single crystal and thin film

Magneto-optics based current imaging technique compares the nature of topological current distribution in a single crystal and thin film of topological insulator material, Bi2Se3. The single crystal, at low temperatures, has uniform topological surface current sheets which are about 3.6 nm thick. With increasing temperature, the current partially diverts into the crystal bulk and concomitantly, the sheet break up into a patchy network of high and low current density regions. The temperature dependence of the high current density areas shows that the surface to bulk transformation in the crystal has features of classical phase transition phenomena. The surface area fraction with topological high current density behaves like an order parameter. This phase transition is driven by disorder. In Bi2Se3 thin film we show the presence of quasi one-dimensional topological edge currents which are suppressed with a weak applied magnetic field. The edge current transforms into a uniform bulk current in the film.

Damping-like Torque in Monolayer 1T-TaS$_2$

A damping-like spin orbit torque (SOT) is a prerequisite for ultralow power spin logic devices. Here, we report on the damping-like SOT in just one monolayer of the conducting transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) TaS$_2$ interfaced with a NiFe (Py) ferromagnetic layer. The charge-spin conversion efficiency is found to be 0.25$\pm$0.03 and the spin Hall conductivity (2.63 $\times$ 10$^5$ $\frac{\hbar}{2e}$ $Ω^{-1}$ m$^{-1}$) is found to be superior to values reported for other TMDs. The origin of this large damping-like SOT can be found in the interfacial properties of the TaS$_2$/Py heterostructure, and the experimental findings are complemented by the results from density functional theory calculations. The dominance of damping-like torque demonstrated in our study provides a promising path for designing next generation conducting TMD based low-powered quantum memory devices.

Imaging the effect of drive on the low-field vortex melting phenomenon in Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 single crystal

Self-field imaging of current distribution in Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 superconductor is used to study the effect of drive on the low-field vortex solid to liquid melting phase transformation. At low fields, the current induced drive on the vortices aids in thermally destabilizing the vortex state thereby shifting the low field melting phase boundary. We show that the current induced drive shifts solid-liquid boundaries and prepones the vortex melting phenomenon compared to the equilibrium situation. The analysis shows that for currents above 50 mA, Joule heating effects shift the melting line while below 50 mA, an effective temperature concept for driven system viz., a drive dependent shaking temperature, explains the shift. The observation of a transformation from inhomogeneous to homogeneous current flow in the sample at low fields as a function of the driving force is reconciled via an inverse dependence of the shaking temperature on vortex velocity, which is incorporated in our analysis.

Impact of the crystal orientation on spin-orbit torques in Fe/Pd bilayers

Spin-orbit torques in ferromagnetic (FM)/non-magnetic (NM) heterostructures offer more energy-efficient means to realize spin-logic devices; however, their strengths are determined by the heterostructure interface. This work examines crystal orientation impact on the spin-orbit torque efficiency in different Fe/Pd bilayer systems. Spin torque ferromagnetic measurements evidence that the damping-like torque efficiency is higher in epitaxial than in polycrystalline bilayer structures while the field-like torque is negligible in all bilayer structures. The strength of the damping-like torque decreases with deterioration of the bilayer epitaxial quality. The present finding provides fresh insight for the enhancement of spin-orbit torques in magnetic heterostructures.

Extraordinary efficient spin-orbit torque switching in (W, Ta)/epitaxial-Co60Fe40/TiN heterostructures

The giant spin Hall effect in magnetic heterostructures along with low spin memory loss and high interfacial spin mixing conductance are prerequisites to realize energy efficient spin torque based logic devices. We report giant spin Hall angle (SHA) of 28.67 (5.09) for W (Ta) interfaced epi- Co60Fe40/TiN structures. The spin-orbit torque switching current density (J_Crit) is as low as 1.82 (8.21) MA/cm2 in W (Ta)/Co60Fe40(t_CoFe)/TiN structures whose origin lies in the epitaxial interfaces. These structures also exhibit very low spin memory loss and high spin mixing conductance. These extraordinary values of SHA and therefore ultra-low J_Crit in semiconducting industry compatible epitaxial materials combinations open up a new direction for the realization of energy efficient spin logic devices by utilizing epitaxial interfaces.

Spin pumping and spin torque in interfacial tailored Co2FeAl/\b{eta}-Ta layers

The Heusler ferromagnetic (FM) compound Co2FeAl interfaced with a high-spin orbit coupling non-magnetic (NM) layer is a promising candidate for energy efficient spin logic circuits. The circuit potential depends on the strength of angular momentum transfer across the FM/NM interface; hence, requiring low spin memory loss and high spin-mixing conductance. To highlight this issue, spin pumping and spin-transfer torque ferromagnetic resonance measurements have been performed on Co_2FeAl/β-Ta heterostructures tailored with Cu interfacial layers. The interface tailored structure yields an enhancement of the effective spin-mixing conductance. The interface transparency and spin memory loss corrected values of the spin-mixing conductance, spin Hall angle and spin diffusion length are found to be 3.40 \pm 0.01 \times 10^{19} m^{-2}, 0.029 \pm 0.003, and 2.3 \pm 0.5 nm, respectively. Furthermore, a high current modulation of the effective damping of around 2.1 % has been achieved at an applied current density of 1 \times 10^9 A/m^2 , which clearly indicates the potential of using this heterostructure for energy efficient control in spin devices

Engineering of spin mixing conductance in Ru/FeCo/Ru interfaces: Effect of Re Doping

We have deposited polycrystalline Re doped $(Fe_{65}Co_{35})_{100-x}Re_{x}$ (0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 12.6 at\%) thin films grown under identical conditions and sandwiched between thin layers of Ru in order to study the phenomenon of spin pumping as a function of Re concentration. In-plane and out-of-plane ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy results show an enhancement of the Gilbert damping with an increase in Re doping. We found evidence of an increase in the real part of effective spin mixing conductance [Re($g^{\uparrow\downarrow}_{eff}$)] with the increase in Re doping of 6.6 at\%, while a decrease is evident at higher Re doping. The increase in Re($g^{\uparrow\downarrow}_{eff}$) can be linked to the Re doping induced change of the interface electronic structure in the non-magnetic Ru layer and the effect interfacial spin-orbit coupling has on the effective spin-mixing conductance. The lowest and highest values of Re($g^{\uparrow\downarrow}_{eff}$) are found to be 9.883(02) $nm^{-2}$ and 19.697(02) $nm^{-2}$ for 0 at\% and 6.6 at\% Re doping, respectively. The saturation magnetization decreases with increasing Re doping, from 2.362(13) T for the undoped film to 1.740(03) T for 12.6 at\% Re doping. This study opens a new direction of tuning the spin-mixing conductance in magnetic heterostructures by doping of the ferromagnetic layerr, which is essential for the realization of energy efficient operation of spintronic devices.

Charmonium ground states in presence of strong magnetic fields

The in-medium masses of the lowest S-wave charmonium states (vector meson, $J/ψ$ and pseudoscalar meson, $η_c$) and P-wave charmonium states (scalar, $χ_{c0}$ and axialvector $χ_{c1}$) are investigated in magnetized nuclear matter, within the framework of QCD sum rule approach. These are computed from the medium modifications of the scalar as well as twist--2 gluon condensates, obtained from the medium modifications of a scalar dilaton field, within a chiral effective model. The effects of the magnetic field, isospin asymmetry and density on the masses of these charmonium states have been investigated. The modifications of the masses of the P-wave charmonium states ($χ_{c0}$ and $χ_{c1}$) are observed to be much larger as compared to those of the S-wave states, $J/ψ$ and $η_c$ within the QCD sum rule approach. The effects of the coupling of the spin with the magnetic field are also investigated in the present work, which result in the mixing of the spin zero charmonium state with the longitudinal component of the vector meson. This leads to an increase (drop) in mass of the longitudinal $J/ψ$ ($η_c$) for the S-wave states. The effects of the spin-magnetic field interactions are observed to be dominant at high magnetic fields.

Theory of time-resolved optical conductivity of superconductors:comparing two methods for its evaluation

Time-resolved optical conductivity is an oft-used tool to interrogate quantum materials driven out of equilibrium. Theoretically calculating this observable is a complex topic with several approaches discussed in the literature. Using a non-equilibrium Keldysh formalism and a functional derivative approach to the conductivity, we present a comparison of two particular approaches to the calculation of the optical conductivity, and their distinguishing features, as applied to a pumped superconductor. The two methods are distinguished by the relative motion of the probe and gate times; either the probe or gate time is kept fixed while the other is swept. We find that both the methods result in same qualitative features of the time-resolved conductivity after pump is over. However, calculating the conductivity by keeping the gate fixed removes artifacts inherent to the other method. We provide software that, based on data for the first method, is able to construct the second approach.

Planar pinning induced, lowering of vortex dimensionality and low field melting in a single crystal of Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2

Theoretically, the vortex melting phenomenon occurs at both low and high magnetic fields at a fixed temperature. While the high field melting has been extensively investigated in high Tc cuprates, the low field melting phenomena in the presence of disorder hasn't been well explored. Using bulk magnetization measurement and high-sensitivity differential magneto-optical imaging technique, we detect a low-field vortex melting phenomenon in a single crystal of Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2. The low field melting is accompanied by a significant change in local magnetization ~ 3 G, which decreases with increasing applied field. The observed vortex melting phenomena is traced on a field temperature phase diagram and which lies very close to theoretically predicted Lindemann criteria based low field melting line. Our analysis shows a Lindemann number cL = 0.14 associated with the low field melting. Imaging of low-field vortex melting features shows the process nucleates via formation of extended finger-like projections which spreads across the sample with increasing field or temperature, before entering into an interaction-dominated vortex solid phase regime. Magnetization scaling analysis shows that the dimensionality of melting vortex state is close to one. Angular dependence of bulk magnetization hysteresis loop in our sample shows the presence of extended defects. From our studies, we propose the sample contains a peculiar geometry of extended defects arranged in a plane in the sample, with these planes extending through the sample thickness. In the weak intervortex interaction limit, we argue that reduced vortex dimensionality due to pinning by these peculiar extended defect planes strongly enhances thermal fluctuations. It is these extended defects planes, which we propose are promoting low dimensional vortex melting in the pnictide system.

Quasi-Fredholm spectrum and compact perturbations

In this paper we explore some characteristics of the quasi-Fredholm resolvent set $ρ_{qf}(T)$ of an operator $T$ defined on an infinite dimensional Banach space $X$. Moreover, in the case of Hilbert space $H$, we study the stability of the SVEP and describe the operators for which the SVEP is preserved under compact perturbations using quasi-Fredholm spectrum and $ρ_{qf}(T)$.
