Planck Scale Phenomena

Though the Planck scale is encountered in Quantum SuperString Theory and Quantum Gravity, it is the Compton scale of elementary particles which is encountered in the physical world. An explanation for this is given in terms of Brownian processes and the duality relation.

The Origin of Life in the Universe

Terrestrial and extraterrestrial theories of the origin of life are discussed in the light of latest observations. The available data suggest a dual mode of origin, some of the ingredients, including possibly sugars, were brought to earth from outer space, which combined with other ingredients, such as proteins, already available on the earth leading to the formation of life.

The Cosmology of Fluctuations

We review a cosmology in which particles are fluctuationally created from a background Zero Point Field. This cosmology is consistent with recent observations of an ever expanding and accelerating universe, as also the recently confirmed evolution of the fine structure constant. All hitherto mysterious and accidental, so called Large Number coincidences, infact follow from the theory.

The Nature of Space Time

We first examine the approximation involved in the conventional differentiable spacetime manifold. We then analyse how, going beyond this approximation, we reach the non commutative spacetime of recent approaches. It is shown that this provides the rationale for El Naschie's transfinite Cantorian spacetime. The nature and form of the consequent Generalized Uncertainity Principle is also briefly investigated.

A New Spin on the Dirac Electron

We re-examine the non Hermitian position coordinate of Dirac's equation, in the light of his own insights and conclude that this, and the Dirac equation itself is symptomatic of an underlying Noncommutative Geometry.

Time-Varying Fine-Structure Constant and Quantum SuperStrings

In this note we observe that Webb and co-workers' observation of an evolving fine structure constant has since been reconfirmed. We also confirm Kuhne's contention that this implies a cosmological constant and exhibit a cosmological mechanism for Webb's result. We also see how this provides a mechanism to reach elementary particle scales from the Quantum Superstring scale.

The Holistic Universe and the Variation of the Fine Structure Constant

Inaba recently used a simple model to suggest that Quantum Theory can result from a fluctuation in the cosmos. In this note we confirm this conclusion from a different and more general point of view. We then argue that this provides an explanation for the recently observed variation of the fine structure constant.

Gravitation and Electromagnetism II

We show how, a non commutative underpinning for spacetime throws up mass, spin and charge and indicate how it is possible to include QCD effects also.

A Reconciliation of Electromagnetism and Gravitation

It is argued that once we consider the underpinning of a Non Commutative geometry, itself symptomatic of extended particles, for example in Quantum Superstring theory, then a reconciliation between gravitation and electromagnetism is possible.

"Extended" Particles, Non Commutative Geometry and Unification

A reconciliation of gravitation and electromagnetism has eluded physics for neearly a century. It is argued here that this is because both quantum physics and classical physics are set in differentiable space time manifolds with point particles. Once we consider extended particles as in Quantum Superstring theory, and the consequential underlying Non-Commutative geometry, then a reconciliation is possible.

Fluctuations in the Quantum Vacuum

We argue that it is a fluctuational underpinning of the Quantum vacuum which on the one hand gives a stochastic character to the conservation laws, and on the other is required for explaining the recently observed acceleration of the universe. This also provides us with the arrow of time, in a consistent cosmology.

The Origin of a Metric

In the context of earlier work, we investigate the emergence of a "distance" in the physical world. For this we consider a Cantor ternary like process, but much more general: properties like perfectness and disconnectedness are not invoked, but instead we deal with Borel sets. An interesting case from a physical point of view is considered: when the process is truncated.

Duality and Cosmology

In some recent theories including Quantum SuperString theory we encounter duality - it arises due to a non commutative geometry which in effect adds an extra term to the Heiserberg Uncertainity Principle. The result is that the micro world and the macro universe seem to be linked. We show why this is so in the context of a recent cosmological model and a physical picture emerges in the context of the Feynman-Wheeler formulation of interactions.

Fuzzy, Non Commutative SpaceTime: A New Paradigm for a New Century

Much of twentieth century physics, whether it be Classical or Quantum, has been based on the concept of spacetime as a differentiable manifold. While this work has culminated in the standard model, it is now generally accepted that in the light of recent experimental results, we have to go beyond the standard model. On the other hand Quantum SuperString Theory and a recent model of Quantized Spacetime in which, for example, an electron can be meaningfully described by the Kerr-Newman metric, have shown promise. They lead to mathematically identical spacetime-energy-momenta commutation relations, and infact an identical non commutative geometry which is a departure from the usual concept of spacetime. This could well be a new paradigm for the new century.

The Astronomical Link Between India and the Mayans

We argue that there was a link between Indus Valley India and the Mayans of Central America which is brought out by astronomical references. The former used a Jovian calendar while the latter had perfected a calendar based on Venus. This will be shown to be a significant clue. This also provides an explanation for the as yet unexplained fact that the Indus script has been found on Easter Islands.

Consequences of a Quantized Spacetime Model

A recent extended particle model is discussed, which lead to some interesting consequences in cosmology, neutrino astrophysics and low dimensional and low temperature statistics, some of which have since been verified.
