Long-range charge density wave proximity effect at cuprate-manganate interfaces

The interplay between charge density waves (CDWs) and high-temperature superconductivity is currently under intense investigation. Experimental research on this issue is difficult because CDW formation in bulk copper-oxides is strongly influenced by random disorder, and a long-range-ordered CDW state in high magnetic fields is difficult to access with spectroscopic and diffraction probes. Here we use resonant x-ray scattering in zero magnetic field to show that interfaces with the metallic ferromagnet La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ greatly enhance CDW formation in the optimally doped high-temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ ($\bf δ\sim 1$), and that this effect persists over several tens of nm. The wavevector of the incommensurate CDW serves as an internal calibration standard of the charge carrier concentration, which allows us to rule out any significant influence of oxygen non-stoichiometry, and to attribute the observed phenomenon to a genuine electronic proximity effect. Long-range proximity effects induced by heterointerfaces thus offer a powerful method to stabilize the charge density wave state in the cuprates, and more generally, to manipulate the interplay between different collective phenomena in metal oxides.

Quantitative determination of bond order and lattice distortions in nickel oxide heterostructures by resonant x-ray scattering

We present a combined study of Ni $K$-edge resonant x-ray scattering and density functional calculations to probe and distinguish electronically driven ordering and lattice distortions in nickelate heterostructures. We demonstrate that due to the low crystal symmetry, contributions from structural distortions can contribute significantly to the energy-dependent Bragg peak intensities of a bond-ordered NdNiO$_3$ reference film. For a LaNiO$_3$-LaAlO$_3$ superlattice that exhibits magnetic order, we establish a rigorous upper bound on the bond-order parameter. We thus conclusively confirm predictions of a dominant spin density wave order parameter in metallic nickelates with a quasi-two-dimensional electronic structure.

Cu-NMR study of oxygen disorder in ortho-II YBa2Cu3Oy

We show that 63Cu NMR spectra place strong constraints on both the nature and the concentration of oxygen defects in ortho-II YBa2Cu3Oy. Systematic deviation from ideal ortho-II order is revealed by the presence of inequivalent Cu sites in either full or empty chains. The results can be explained by two kinds of defects: oxygen clustering into additional chains, or fragments thereof, most likely present at all concentrations (6.4<y<6.6) and oxygen vacancies randomly distributed in the full chains for y<6.50 only. Furthermore, the remarkable reproducibility of the spectra in different samples with optimal ortho-II order (y=6.55) shows that chain-oxygen disorder, known to limit electronic coherence, is ineluctable because it is inherent to these compounds.

Optical anisotropy of the Jeff = 1/2 Mott insulator Sr2IrO4

We report the complex dielectric function along and perpendicular to the IrO2 planes in the layered perovskite Sr2IrO4 determined by spectroscopic ellipsometry in the spectral range from 12 meV to 6 eV. Thin high quality single crystals were stacked to measure the c-axis optical conductivity. In the phonon response we identified 10 infrared-active modes polarized within the basal plane and only four modes polarized along the c-axis, in full agreement with first-principle lattice dynamics calculations. We also observed a strong optical anisotropy in the near-infrared spectra arising from direct transitions between Ir 5d t2g Jeff = 1/2 and Jeff = 3/2 bands, which transition probability is highly suppressed for light polarized along the c-axis. The spectra are analyzed and discussed in terms of relativistic LSDA+U band structure calculations.

Magnetostriction and magneto-structural domains in antiferromagnetic YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6}$

We have used high-resolution neutron Larmor diffraction and capacitative dilatometry to investigate spontaneous and forced magnetostriction in undoped, antiferromagnetic YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.0}$, the parent compound of a prominent family of high-temperature superconductors. Upon cooling below the Néel temperature, $T_N = 420$~K, Larmor diffraction reveals the formation of magneto-structural domains of characteristic size $\sim 240$~nm. In the antiferromagnetic state, dilatometry reveals a minute ($4 \times 10^{-6}$) orthorhombic distortion of the crystal lattice in external magnetic fields. We attribute these observations to exchange striction and spin-orbit coupling induced magnetostriction, respectively, and show that they have an important influence on the thermal and charge transport properties of undoped and lightly doped cuprates.

Interfacial roughness and proximity effects in superconductor/ferromagnet CuNi/Nb heterostructures

We report an investigation of the structural and electronic properties of hybrid superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) bilayers of composition Nb/Cu$_{60}$Ni$_{40}$ prepared by magnetron sputtering. X-ray and neutron reflectometry show that both the overall interfacial roughness and vertical correlations of the roughness of different interfaces are lower for heterostructures deposited on Al$_2$O$_3$(1$\bar{1}$02) substrates than for those deposited on Si(111). Mutual inductance experiments were then used to study the influence of the interfacial roughness on the superconducting transition temperature, $T_C$. These measurements revealed a $\sim$ 4% higher $T_C$ in heterostructures deposited on Al$_2$O$_3$, compared to those on Si. We attribute this effect to a higher mean-free path of electrons in the S layer, caused by a suppression of diffusive scattering at the interfaces. However, the dependence of the $T_C$ on the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer is not significantly different in the two systems, indicating a weak influence of the interfacial roughness on the transparency for Cooper pairs.

Soft spin-amplitude fluctuations in a Mott-insulating ruthenate

Magnetism in transition-metal compounds (TMCs) has traditionally been associated with spin degrees of freedom, because the orbital magnetic moments are typically largely quenched. On the other hand, magnetic order in 4f- and 5d-electron systems arises from spin and orbital moments that are rigidly tied together by the large intra-atomic spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Using inelastic neutron scattering on the archetypal 4d-electron Mott insulator Ca$_2$RuO$_4$, we report a novel form of excitonic magnetism in the intermediate-strength regime of the SOC. The magnetic order is characterized by ``soft'' magnetic moments with large amplitude fluctuations manifested by an intense, low-energy excitonic mode analogous to the Higgs mode in particle physics. This mode heralds a proximate quantum critical point separating the soft magnetic order driven by the superexchange interaction from a quantum-paramagnetic state driven by the SOC. We further show that this quantum critical point can be tuned by lattice distortions, and hence may be accessible in epitaxial thin-film structures. The unconventional spin-orbital-lattice dynamics in Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ identifies the SOC as a novel source of quantum criticality in TMCs.

Crystal growth and intrinsic magnetic behavior of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$

We report on the growth of stoichiometric Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ single crystals, which allow us to unveil their intrinsic magnetic properties. The effect of different growth conditions has been investigated for crystals grown by the flux method. We find that the magnetic response depends very sensitively on the details of the growth conditions. We assess the defect concentration based on magnetization, X-ray diffraction, Raman scattering, and optical conductivity measurements. We find that samples with a low concentration of electronically active defects show much reduced in-gap spectral weight in the optical conductivity and a pronounced two-magnon peak in the Raman scattering spectrum. A prolonged exposure at high temperature during the growth leads to higher defect concentration likely due to creation of oxygen vacancies. We further demonstrate a systematic intergrowth of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ phases by varying the growth temperature. Our results thus emphasize that revealing the intrinsic magnetic properties of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and related materials requires a scrupulous control of the crystal growth process.

Spin-orbital excitation continuum and anomalous electron-phonon interaction in the Mott insulator LaTiO$_3$

Raman scattering experiments on stoichiometric, Mott-insulating LaTiO$_3$ over a wide range of excitation energies reveal a broad electronic continuum which is featureless in the paramagnetic state, but develops a gap of $\sim 800$ cm$^{-1}$ upon cooling below the Néel temperature $T_N = 146$ K. In the antiferromagnetic state, the spectral weight below the gap is transferred to well-defined spectral features due to spin and orbital excitations. Low-energy phonons exhibit pronounced Fano anomalies indicative of strong interaction with the electron system for $T > T_N$, but become sharp and symmetric for $T < T_N$. The electronic continuum and the marked renormalization of the phonon lifetime by the onset of magnetic order are highly unusual for Mott insulators and indicate liquid-like correlations between spins and orbitals.

Two-magnon Raman scattering and pseudospin-lattice interactions in Sr2IrO4 and Sr3Ir2O7

We have used Raman scattering to investigate the magnetic excitations and lattice dynamics in the prototypical spin-orbit Mott insulators Sr2IrO4 and Sr3Ir2O7. Both compounds exhibit pronounced two-magnon Raman scattering features with different energies, lineshapes, and temperature dependencies, which in part reflect the different influence of long-range frustrating exchange interactions. Additionally, we find strong Fano asymmetries in the lineshapes of low-energy phonon modes in both compounds, which disappear upon cooling below the antiferromagnetic ordering temperatures. These unusual phonon anomalies indicate that the spin-orbit coupling in Mott-insulating iridates is not sufficiently strong to quench the orbital dynamics in the paramagnetic state.

Peculiarities of neutron waveguides with thin Gd layer

Peculiarities of the formation of a neutron enhanced standing wave in the structure with a thin highly absorbing layer of gadolinium are considered in the article. An analogue of the poisoning effect well known in reactor physics was found. The effect is stronger for the Nb/Gd/Nb system. Despite of this effect, for a Nb/Gd bilayer and a Nb/Gd/Nb trilayer placed between Al2O3 substrate and Cu layer, it is shown theoretically and experimentally that one order of magnitude enhancement of neutron density is possible in the vicinity of the Gd layer. This enhancement makes it possible to study domain formation in the Gd layer under transition of the Nb layer(s) into the superconducting state (cryptoferromagnetic phase).

Nonlinear lattice dynamics as a basis for enhanced superconductivity in YBa2Cu3O6.5

THz-frequency optical pulses can resonantly drive selected vibrational modes in solids and deform their crystal structure. In complex oxides, this method has been used to melt electronic orders, drive insulator to metal transitions or induce superconductivity. Strikingly, coherent interlayer transport strongly reminiscent of superconductivity can be transiently induced up to room temperature in YBa2Cu3O6+x. By combining femtosecond X-ray diffraction and ab initio density functional theory calculations, we determine here the crystal structure of this exotic non-equilibrium state. We find that nonlinear lattice excitation in normal-state YBa2Cu3O6+x at 100 K causes a staggered dilation/contraction of the Cu-O2 intra/inter- bilayer distances, accompanied by anisotropic changes in the in-plane O-Cu-O bond buckling. Density functional theory calculations indicate that these motions cause dramatic changes in the electronic structure. Amongst these, the enhancement in the dx2-y2 character of the in-plane electronic structure is likely to favor superconductivity.

Coherent Modulation of the YBa2Cu3O6+x Atomic Structure by Displacive Stimulated Ionic Raman Scattering

We discuss the mechanism of coherent phonon generation by Stimulated Ionic Raman Scattering, a process different from conventional excitation with near visible optical pulses. Ionic Raman scattering is driven by anharmonic coupling between a directly excited infrared-active phonon mode and other Raman modes. We experimentally study the response of YBa2Cu3O6+x to the resonant excitation of apical oxygen motions at 20 THz by mid-infrared pulses, which has been shown in the past to enhance the interlayer superconducting coupling. We find coherent oscillations of four totally symmetric (Ag) Raman modes and make a critical assessment of the role of these oscillatory motions in the enhancement of superconductivity.

Magnetic-field and doping dependence of low-energy spin fluctuations in the antiferroquadrupolar compound Ce(1-x)La(x)B(6)

CeB(6) is a model compound exhibiting antiferroquadrupolar (AFQ) order, its magnetic properties being typically interpreted within localized models. More recently, the observation of strong and sharp magnetic exciton modes forming in its antiferromagnetic (AFM) state at both ferromagnetic and AFQ wave vectors suggested a significant contribution of itinerant electrons to the spin dynamics. Here we investigate the evolution of the AFQ excitation upon the application of an external magnetic field and the substitution of Ce with non-magnetic La, both parameters known to suppress the AFM phase. We find that the exciton energy decreases proportionally to T_N upon doping. In field, its intensity is suppressed, while its energy remains constant. Its disappearance above the critical field of the AFM phase is preceded by the formation of two modes, whose energies grow linearly with magnetic field upon entering the AFQ phase. These findings suggest a crossover from itinerant to localized spin dynamics between the two phases, the coupling to heavy-fermion quasiparticles being crucial for a comprehensive description of the magnon spectrum.

The symmetry of charge order in cuprates

Charge-ordered ground states permeate the phenomenology of 3d-based transition metal oxides, and more generally represent a distinctive hallmark of strongly-correlated states of matter. The recent discovery of charge order in various cuprate families fueled new interest into the role played by this incipient broken symmetry within the complex phase diagram of high-Tc superconductors. Here we use resonant X-ray scattering to resolve the main characteristics of the charge-modulated state in two cuprate families: Bi2201 and YBCO. We detect no signatures of spatial modulations along the nodal direction in Bi2201, thus clarifying the inter-unit-cell momentum-structure of charge order. We also resolve the intra-unit-cell symmetry of the charge ordered state, which is revealed to be best represented by a bond-order with modulated charges on the O-2p orbitals and a prominent d-wave character. These results provide insights on the microscopic description of charge order in cuprates, and on its origin and interplay with superconductivity.

Femtosecond x rays link melting of charge-density wave correlations and light-enhanced coherent transport in YBa2Cu3O6.6

We use femtosecond resonant soft x-ray diffraction to measure the optically stimulated ultrafast changes of charge density wave correlations in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.6. We find that when coherent interlayer transport is enhanced by optical excitation of the apical oxygen distortions, at least 50% of the in-plane charge density wave order is melted. These results indicate that charge ordering and superconductivity may be competing up to the charge ordering transition temperature, with the latter becoming a hidden phase that is accessible only by nonlinear phonon excitation.

Collective nature of spin excitations in superconducting cuprates probed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We used resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) with and without analysis of the scattered photon polarization, to study dispersive spin excitations in the high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6+x over a wide range of doping levels (0.1 < x < 1). The excitation profiles were carefully monitored as the incident photon energy was detuned from the resonant condition, and the spin excitation energy was found to be independent of detuning for all x. These findings demonstrate that the largest fraction of the spin-flip RIXS profiles in doped cuprates arises from magnetic collective modes, rather than from incoherent particle-hole excitations as recently suggested theoretically [Benjamin et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 247002(2014)]. Implications for the theoretical description of the electron system in the cuprates are discussed.
