Can the phase of radiation pressure fluctuations be flipped in a single path for laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors?

Radiation pressure (RP) noise, one component of quantum noise, can limit the sensitivity of laser interferometric gravitational wave (GW) detectors at lower frequencies. We conceived a possible RP noise cancellation method, using phase flipped ponderomotive-squeezed light (FPSL) incident on free-mass mirrors in interferometers' arms. This possibility is investigated under the constraint that the method is for space-based GW detectors in a broad frequency band lower than 1 Hz without using a long optical cavity. Considering various patterns in a single path small-scale case to generate the FPSL, we proved that no configuration exists in the single path case.

Revisit on thermodynamics of BTZ black hole with variable Newton constant

The thermodynamics of the BTZ black holes are revisited with variable Newton constant. A new pair of conjugated variables, the central charge $C$ and the chemical potential $μ$, is introduced as thermodynamic variables. The first law of thermodynamics and the Euler relation, instead of the Smarr relation in the extended phase space formalism, are matched perfectly in this formalism. Compatible with standard extensive thermodynamics, the black hole mass is verified to be a first order homogeneous function of the related extensive variables, and restores the role of internal energy. In addition, the heat capacity has also resulted in a first order homogeneous function in this formalism as we expected, and an asymptotic behavior in high temperature limit is shown intriguingly. The non-negatively of heat capacity indicates that the rotating and charged BTZ black holes are thermodynamically stable.

Recoil-free azimuthal angle for precision boson-jet correlation

The azimuthal decorrelation between a vector boson and a jet is an essential hard probe in high energy proton-proton and heavy-ion collisions. We overcome intrinsic limitations of previous studies by using a recoil-free axis, achieving unprecedented next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy with small nonperturbative corrections. This choice of axis also makes the observable robust in the presence of a large background. Furthermore, the azimuthal angle distribution is minimally changed when determined using only charged particle tracks, which offer superior angular resolution for precise measurements. Our effective field theory includes full jet dynamics, and we find contributions from linearly-polarized gluon transverse momentum distributions in the initial and final state.

Conceptual design and science cases of a juggled interferometer for gravitational wave detection

The Juggled interferometer (JIFO) is an earth-based gravitational wave detector using repeatedly free-falling test masses. With no worries of seismic noise and suspension thermal noise, the JIFO can have much better sensitivity at lower frequencies than the current earth-based gravitational wave detectors. The data readout method of a JIFO could be challenging if one adopts the fringe-locking method. We present a phase reconstruction method in this paper by building up a complex function which has a fringe-independent signal-to-noise ratio. Considering the displacement noise budget of the Einstein Telescope (ET), we show that the juggled test masses significantly improve the sensitivity at 0.1-2.5$\,$Hz even with discontinuous data. The science cases brought with the improved sensitivity would include detecting quasi-normal modes of black holes with $10^4-10^5\,M_{\odot}$, testing Brans-Dicke theory with black-hole and neutron-star inspirals, and detecting primordial-black-hole-related gravitational waves.

Co-evolution of Vaccination Behavior and Perceived Vaccination Risk can lead to a Stag-Hunt like Game

Voluntary vaccination is effective to prevent infectious diseases from spreading. Both vaccination behavior and cognition of the vaccination risk play important roles in individual vaccination decision making. However, it is not clear how the co-evolution of the two shapes the population-wide vaccination behavior. We establish a coupled dynamics of epidemic, vaccination behavior and perceived vaccination risk with three different time scales. We assume that the increase of vaccination level inhibits the rise of perceived vaccination risk, and the increase of perceived vaccination risk inhibits the rise of vaccination level. It is shown that the resulting vaccination behavior is similar to the stag-hunt game, provided that the basic reproductive ratio is moderate and that the epidemic dynamics evolves fast. This is in contrast with the previous view that vaccination is a snowdrift like game. Furthermore, we find that epidemic breaks out repeatedly and eventually leads to vaccine scares if these three dynamics evolve on a similar time scale. And we propose some ways to promote vaccination behavior, such as controlling side-effect bias and perceived vaccination costs. Our work sheds light on epidemic control via vaccination by taking into account the co-evolutionary dynamics of cognition and behavior.

Neutron displacement noise-free interferometer for gravitational-wave detection

An interferometer design that cancels all displacement noises of its test masses and maintains a gravitational-wave (GW) signal by combining multiple detector signals is called a displacement noise-free interferometer (DFI). The idea has been considered previously for a laser interferometer. However, a limitation of a laser DFI is that its sensitive frequency band is too high for astrophysical GW sources, $\sim 10^5\,{\rm Hz}$ even for a kilometer-sized interferometer. To circumvent this limitation, in this paper, we propose a neutron DFI, in which neutrons are used instead of light. Since neutrons have velocities much lower than the speed of light, the sensitive frequency band of a neutron DFI can be lowered down to $\sim 10^{-1}\,{\rm Hz}$. Therefore, a neutron DFI can be utilized for detecting GWs that are inaccessible by an ordinary laser interferometer on the ground.

MDAN: Multi-level Dependent Attention Network for Visual Emotion Analysis

Visual Emotion Analysis (VEA) is attracting increasing attention. One of the biggest challenges of VEA is to bridge the affective gap between visual clues in a picture and the emotion expressed by the picture. As the granularity of emotions increases, the affective gap increases as well. Existing deep approaches try to bridge the gap by directly learning discrimination among emotions globally in one shot without considering the hierarchical relationship among emotions at different affective levels and the affective level of emotions to be classified. In this paper, we present the Multi-level Dependent Attention Network (MDAN) with two branches, to leverage the emotion hierarchy and the correlation between different affective levels and semantic levels. The bottom-up branch directly learns emotions at the highest affective level and strictly follows the emotion hierarchy while predicting emotions at lower affective levels. In contrast, the top-down branch attempt to disentangle the affective gap by one-to-one mapping between semantic levels and affective levels, namely, Affective Semantic Mapping. At each semantic level, a local classifier learns discrimination among emotions at the corresponding affective level. Finally, We integrate global learning and local learning into a unified deep framework and optimize the network simultaneously. Moreover, to properly extract and leverage channel dependencies and spatial attention while disentangling the affective gap, we carefully designed two attention modules: the Multi-head Cross Channel Attention module and the Level-dependent Class Activation Map module. Finally, the proposed deep framework obtains new state-of-the-art performance on six VEA benchmarks, where it outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods by a large margin, e.g., +3.85% on the WEBEmo dataset at 25 classes classification accuracy.

Displacement-noise-free neutron interferometer for gravitational wave detection using a single Mach-Zehnder configuration

The improvement of sensitivity to gravitational waves (GWs) at lower frequencies is still challenging on account of displacement noise. One of the solutions is the neutron displacement-noise-free interferometer (DFI). We focus on a simplification of the detector configuration by taking advantage of the ability to adjust the neutron speed depending on the configuration. The new configuration consists of two beamsplitters and two mirrors, which constitute a single Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). It is simpler than the configuration with two MZIs in previous research. All displacement noise of mirrors and beamsplitters can be canceled in the frequency domain. This cancellation can be explained intuitively using a phasor diagram.

Prediction of Depression Severity Based on the Prosodic and Semantic Features with Bidirectional LSTM and Time Distributed CNN

Depression is increasingly impacting individuals both physically and psychologically worldwide. It has become a global major public health problem and attracts attention from various research fields. Traditionally, the diagnosis of depression is formulated through semi-structured interviews and supplementary questionnaires, which makes the diagnosis heavily relying on physicians experience and is subject to bias. Mental health monitoring and cloud-based remote diagnosis can be implemented through an automated depression diagnosis system. In this article, we propose an attention-based multimodality speech and text representation for depression prediction. Our model is trained to estimate the depression severity of participants using the Distress Analysis Interview Corpus-Wizard of Oz (DAIC-WOZ) dataset. For the audio modality, we use the collaborative voice analysis repository (COVAREP) features provided by the dataset and employ a Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Network (Bi-LSTM) followed by a Time-distributed Convolutional Neural Network (T-CNN). For the text modality, we use global vectors for word representation (GloVe) to perform word embeddings and the embeddings are fed into the Bi-LSTM network. Results show that both audio and text models perform well on the depression severity estimation task, with best sequence level F1 score of 0.9870 and patient-level F1 score of 0.9074 for the audio model over five classes (healthy, mild, moderate, moderately severe, and severe), as well as sequence level F1 score of 0.9709 and patient-level F1 score of 0.9245 for the text model over five classes. Results are similar for the multimodality fused model, with the highest F1 score of 0.9580 on the patient-level depression detection task over five classes. Experiments show statistically significant improvements over previous works.

Doping-driven topological polaritons in graphene/α-MoO3 heterostructures

Controlling the charge carrier density provides an efficient way to trigger phase transitions and modulate the optoelectronic properties in natural materials. This approach could be used to induce topological transitions in the optical response of photonic systems. Here, we predict a topological transition in the isofrequency dispersion contours of hybrid polaritons supported by a two-dimensional heterostructure consisting of graphene and $α$-phase molybdenum trioxide ($α$-MoO3). By chemically changing the doping level of graphene, we experimentally demonstrate that the contour topology of polariton isofrequency surfaces transforms from open to closed shapes as a result of doping-dependent polariton hybridization. Moreover, by changing the substrate medium for the heterostructure, the dispersion contour can be further engineered into a rather flattened shape at the topological transition, thus supporting tunable polariton canalization and providing the means to locally control the topology. We demonstrate this idea to achieve extremely subwavelength focusing by using a 1.2-$μ$m-wide silica substrate as a negative refraction lens. Our findings open a disruptive approach toward promising on-chip applications in nanoimaging, optical sensing, and manipulation of nanoscale energy transfer.

Thermodynamics curvature in phase transitions for AdS black hole

We investigate the thermodynamic curvature in the Hawking-Page phase transition and the second-order phase transition of the AdS black hole. It is shown that the thermodynamic curvature has the same behavior in these two different phase transitions. Specifically, the thermodynamic curvature in the Hawking-Page phase transition is the power function of the Hawking-Page phase transition temperature with exponent related to the spacetime dimension, or is invariably proportional to the reciprocal of the Hawking-Page phase transition entropy. For the thermodynamic curvature in the second-order phase transition, the conclusion is similar. The more enlightening result is that the ratio of thermodynamic curvatures along the two different phase transitions tends to the natural constant in the limit that the number of spacetime dimensions is infinite. The universal and novel result provides an essential difference between the Hawking-Page phase transition and the second-order phase transition of the AdS black hole in the large dimension paradigm.

van der Waals fluid and charged AdS black hole in the Landau theory

By introducing the general construction of Landau functional of the van der Waals system and charged AdS black hole system, we have preliminarily realized the Landau continuous phase transition theory in black hole thermodynamics. The results show that the Landau functional constructed in present paper can directly reflect the physical process of black hole phase transition. Specifically, the splitting of the global minimum of the Landau functional corresponds to the second-order phase transition of the black hole, and the transformation of the global minimum reflects the first-order phase transition of the black hole.

A shell of Bosons in Spherically Symmetric spacetimes

The thermodynamic properties of a shell of bosons with the inner surface locating at Planck length away from the horizon of Schwarzschild black holes by using statistical mechanics are studied. The covariant partition function of bosons is obtained, from which the Bose-Einstein condensation of bosons is found at a non-zero temperature in the curved spacetimes. As a special case of bosons, we analyze the entropy of photon gas near the horizon of the Schwarzschild black hole, which shows an area dependence similar to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. The results may offer new perspectives on the study of black hole thermodynamics. All these are extended to the $D+1$ dimensional spherically symmetric static spacetimes.

Ruppeiner geometry and thermodynamic phase transition of the black hole in massive gravity

The phase transition and thermodynamic geometry of a 4-dimensional AdS topological charged black hole in de Rham, Gabadadze and Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity have been studied. After introducing a normalized thermodynamic scalar curvature, it is speculated that its value is related to the interaction between the underlying black hole molecules if the black hole molecules exist. We show that there does exist a crucial parameter given in terms of the topology, charge, and massive parameters of the black hole, which characterizes the thermodynamic properties of the black hole. It is found that when the parameter is positive, the singlet large black hole phase does not exist for sufficient low temperature and there is a weak repulsive interaction dominating for the small black hole which is similar to the Reissner-Nordström AdS black hole; when the parameter is negative, an additional phase region describing large black holes also implies a dominant repulsive interaction. These constitute the distinguishable features of dRGT massive topological black hole from those of the Reissner-Nordström AdS black hole as well as the Van der Waals fluid system.

Payoff Control in Repeated Games

Evolutionary game theory is a powerful mathematical framework to study how intelligent individuals adjust their strategies in collective interactions. It has been widely believed that it is impossible to unilaterally control players' payoffs in games, since payoffs are jointly determined by all players. Until recently, a class of so-called zero-determinant strategies are revealed, which enables a player to make a unilateral payoff control over her partners in two-action repeated games with a constant continuation probability. The existing methods, however, lead to the curse of dimensionality when the complexity of games increases. In this paper, we propose a new mathematical framework to study ruling strategies (with which a player unilaterally makes a linear relation rule on players' payoffs) in repeated games with an arbitrary number of actions or players, and arbitrary continuation probability. We establish an existence theorem of ruling strategies and develop an algorithm to find them. In particular, we prove that strict Markov ruling strategy exists only if either the repeated game proceeds for an infinite number of rounds, or every round is repeated with the same probability. The proposed mathematical framework also enables the search of collaborative ruling strategies for an alliance to control outsiders. Our method provides novel theoretical insights into payoff control in complex repeated games, which overcomes the curse of dimensionality.

On guided circumferential waves in soft electroactive tubes under radially inhomogeneous biasing fields

In this paper, we present an analysis of the guided circumferential elastic waves in soft EA tube actuators, which has potential applications in the in-situ non-destructive evaluation or online structural health monitoring (SHM) to detect structural defects or fatigue cracks in soft EA tube actuators and in the self-sensing of soft EA tube actuators based on the concept of guided circumferential elastic waves. Both circumferential SH and Lamb-type waves in an incompressible soft EA cylindrical tube under inhomogeneous biasing fields are considered. The biasing fields, induced by the application of an electric voltage difference to the electrodes on the inner and outer cylindrical surfaces of the EA tube in addition to an axial pre-stretch, are inhomogeneous in the radial direction. Dorfmann and Ogden's theory of nonlinear electroelasticity and the associated linear theory for small incremental motion constitute the basis of our analysis. By means of the state-space formalism for the incremental wave motion along with the approximate laminate technique, dispersion relations are derived in a particularly efficient way. For a neo-Hookean ideal dielectric model, the proposed approach is first validated numerically. Numerical examples are then given to show that the guided circumferential wave propagation characteristics are significantly affected by the inhomogeneous biasing fields and the geometrical parameters. Some particular phenomena such as the frequency veering and the nonlinear dependence of the phase velocity on the radial electric voltage are discussed. Our numerical findings demonstrate that it is feasible to use guided circumferential elastic waves for the ultrasonic non-destructive online SHM to detect interior structural defects or fatigue cracks and for the self-sensing of the actual state of the soft EA tube actuator.

Surface effects on anti-plane shear waves propagating in magneto-electro-elastic nano-plates

Material surface may have a remarkable effect on the mechanical behavior of magneto-electro-elastic (or multiferroic) structures at nano-scale. In this paper, a surface magneto-electro-elasticity theory (or effective boundary condition formulation), which governs the motion of the material surface of magneto-electro-elastic nano-plates, is established by employing the state-space formalism. The properties of anti-plane shear (SH) waves propagating in a transversely isotropic magneto-electro-elastic plate with nano-thickness are investigated by taking surface effects into account. The size-dependent dispersion relations of both antisymmetric and symmetric SH waves are presented. The thickness-shear frequencies and the asymptotic characteristics of the dispersion relations considering surface effects are determined analytically as well. Numerical results show that surface effects play a very pronounced role in elastic wave propagation in magneto-electro-elastic nano-plates, and the dispersion properties depend strongly on the chosen surface material parameters of magneto-electro-elastic nano-plates. As a consequence, it is possible to modulate the waves in magneto-electro-elastic nano-plates through surface engineering.

On free vibration of piezoelectric nanospheres with surface effect

Surface effect responsible for some size-dependent characteristics can become distinctly important for piezoelectric nanomaterials with inherent large surface-to-volume ratio. In this paper, we investigate the surface effect on the free vibration behavior of a spherically isotropic piezoelectric nanosphere. Instead of directly using the well-known Huang-Yu surface piezoelectricity theory (HY theory), another general framework based on a thin shell layer model is proposed. A novel approach is developed to establish the surface piezoelectricity theory or the effective boundary conditions for piezoelectric nanospheres employing the state-space formalism. Three different sources of surface effect can be identified in the first-order surface piezoelectricity, i.e. the electroelastic effect, the inertia effect, and the thickness effect. It is found that the proposed theory becomes identical to the HY theory for a spherical material boundary if the transverse stress (TS) components are discarded and the electromechanical properties are properly defined. The nonaxisymmetric free vibration of a piezoelectric nanosphere with surface effect is then studied and an exact solution is obtained. In order to investigate the surface effect on the natural frequencies of piezoelectric nanospheres, numerical calculations are finally performed. Our numerical findings demonstrate that the surface effect, especially the thickness effect, may have a particularly significant influence on the free vibration of piezoelectric nanospheres. This work provides a more accurate prediction of the dynamic characteristics of piezoelectric nanospherical devices in Nano-Electro-Mechanical Systems (NEMS).
