Advanced Externally Seeded FEL Schemes for High-Repetition-Rate Operation at SHINE

Externally seeded free-electron lasers (FELs) are promising approaches for generating fully coherent soft-X-ray radiation. Their extension to shorter wavelengths and MHz-level repetition rates is, however, constrained by the limited availability of high-repetition-rate seed lasers with sufficient energy modulation. Recent self-amplification and direct-amplification experiments at the Shanghai Soft X-ray FEL facility have significantly relaxed the peak-power requirement for high-gain harmonic generation (HGHG) and opened a practical path toward echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG). Using the SHINE bypass line, three compatible high-repetition-rate seeded-FEL configurations are explored: self-modulation cascaded HGHG, self-modulation EEHG, and direct-amplification-driven EEHG. Numerical simulations indicate that these schemes can provide flexible routes toward MHz-level operation with harmonic generation beyond the 30th order. A common modulator-chicane layout is proposed to preserve compatibility among the candidate modes and to support future optimization and experimental implementation at SHINE.

Fully coherent short wavelength free-electron laser driven by a single sub-microjoule seed

High-repetition-rate, fully coherent extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) and X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) are essential for advanced time-resolved ultrafast spectroscopies. While external seeding serves as the standard technique to achieve precise temporal coherence, conventional methods demand hundred-megawatt peak-power laser systems. Furthermore, advanced configurations like echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG) introduce the severe complexities of dual-laser synchronization. Together, these requirements fundamentally restrict operations to kilohertz repetition rates and compromise overall system stability. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a fully coherent EEHG-FEL driven by a single, sub-microjoule seed laser. By employing a direct-amplification enabled harmonic generation technique, we utilize an initial 0.4 microJ (2 MW peak power) ultraviolet seed to directly drive coherent lasing at nanometer wavelengths. By eliminating the need for extreme peak powers and multiple synchronized lasers, this approach significantly simplifies the seeding architecture and provides a practical and robust pathway toward megahertz-class, fully coherent EUV and X-ray light sources.

ECG-R1: Protocol-Guided and Modality-Agnostic MLLM for Reliable ECG Interpretation

Electrocardiography (ECG) serves as an indispensable diagnostic tool in clinical practice, yet existing multimodal large language models (MLLMs) remain unreliable for ECG interpretation, often producing plausible but clinically incorrect analyses. To address this, we propose ECG-R1, the first reasoning ECG MLLM designed for reliable ECG interpretation via three innovations. First, we construct the interpretation corpus using \textit{Protocol-Guided Instruction Data Generation}, grounding interpretation in measurable ECG features and monograph-defined quantitative thresholds and diagnostic logic. Second, we present a modality-decoupled architecture with \textit{Interleaved Modality Dropout} to improve robustness and cross-modal consistency when either the ECG signal or ECG image is missing. Third, we present \textit{Reinforcement Learning with ECG Diagnostic Evidence Rewards} to strengthen evidence-grounded ECG interpretation. Additionally, we systematically evaluate the ECG interpretation capabilities of proprietary, open-source, and medical MLLMs, and provide the first quantitative evidence that severe hallucinations are widespread, suggesting that the public should not directly trust these outputs without independent verification. Code is available at \href{https://github.com/PKUDigitalHealth/ECG-R1}{here}.

Agent Learning via Early Experience

A long-term goal of language agents is to learn and improve through their own experience, ultimately outperforming humans in complex, real-world tasks. However, training agents from experience data with reinforcement learning remains difficult in many environments, which either lack verifiable rewards (e.g., websites) or require inefficient long-horizon rollouts (e.g., multi-turn tool use). As a result, most current agents rely on supervised fine-tuning on expert data, which is challenging to scale and generalizes poorly. This limitation stems from the nature of expert demonstrations: they capture only a narrow range of scenarios, and expose the agent to limited environment diversity. We address this limitation with a middle-ground paradigm we call early experience: interaction data generated by the agent's own actions, where the resulting future states serve as supervision without reward signals. Within this paradigm, we study two strategies of using such data: (1) implicit world modeling, which uses collected states to ground the policy in environment dynamics; and (2) self-reflection, where the agent learns from its suboptimal actions to improve reasoning and decision-making. Evaluation across eight diverse environments and multiple model families shows that our approaches consistently improve effectiveness and out-of-domain generalization, highlighting the value of early experience. Moreover, in environments with verifiable rewards, our results provide promising signals that early experience offers a strong foundation for subsequent reinforcement learning, making it a practical bridge between imitation learning and fully experience-driven agents.

Antiferromagnetic Ordering Enhanced Magnetic Damping in Mn2Au/CoFeB Bilayers

Antiferromagnets (AFMs) hold significant potential for spintronic devices owing to their insensitivity to external magnetic fields and the absence of stray fields. Beyond these inherent advantages, an AFM can manipulate the magnetic dynamics of a ferromagnet (FM) layer in AFM/FM bilayers, whereas the mechanism of such manipulation remains controversial. Here, we investigate the magnetic dynamics of AFM/FM Mn2Au/CoFeB bilayers via Ferromagnetic Resonance (FMR). It is found that the Néel temperature of 2-nm-thick Mn2Au is as low as ~40 K, in sharp contrast to that of bulk Mn2Au, which exceeds 1000 K. In the Mn2Au(2 nm)/CoFeB(4 nm) bilayer, the magnetic damping $α$ of the CoFeB layer increases from 0.013 to 0.047 as temperature decreases from 160 K to 10 K, accompanied by a synchronous increase in the exchange coupling field H_rot. Such an increase in $α$ is attributed to the enhanced spin angular momentum transfer from CoFeB to Mn2Au, mediated through AFM-FM exchange coupling between Mn2Au and CoFeB, which is enhanced by the Mn2Au antiferromagnetic ordering as the temperature decreases. Our study provides deeper insights into AFM/FM dynamics and spintronic storage technology.

Towards Clinically Interpretable Ophthalmic VQA via Spatially-Grounded Lesion Evidence

Visual Question Answering (VQA) holds great promise for clinical support, particularly in ophthalmology, where retinal fundus photography is essential for diagnosis. However, ophthalmic VQA benchmarks primarily emphasize answer accuracy, neglecting the explicit visual evidence necessary for clinical interpretability. In this work, we introduce FundusGround, a new benchmark for clinically interpretable ophthalmic VQA with spatially-grounded lesion evidence. Specifically, we propose a three-stage pipeline that collects 10,719 fundus images with 15,595 image-level meticulously annotated lesions. To ensure anatomical consistency and clinical validity, all lesions are spatially localized using the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) grid, enabling standardized mapping to nine clinically meaningful retinal regions. Built upon this structured lesion evidence, 72,706 questions are then generated spanning four formats: open-ended, closed-ended, single-choice, and multiple-choice. We further benchmark multiple general- and medical- large vision-language models using dual metrics for answer accuracy and lesion-level reasoning. The experiments demonstrate that incorporating lesion-level visual evidence consistently improves model performance and transparency, highlighting the necessity of explicit spatial grounding for reliable and explainable ophthalmic VQA.

Multi-needle Localization for Pelvic Seed Implant Brachytherapy based on Tip-handle Detection and Matching

Accurate multi-needle localization in intraoperative CT images is crucial for optimizing seed placement in pelvic seed implant brachytherapy. However, this task is challenging due to poor image contrast and needle adhesion. This paper presents a novel approach that reframes needle localization as a tip-handle detection and matching problem to overcome these difficulties. An anchor-free network, based on HRNet, is proposed to extract multi-scale features and accurately detect needle tips and handles by predicting their centers and orientations using decoupled branches for heatmap regression and polar angle prediction. To associate detected tips and handles into individual needles, a greedy matching and merging (GMM) method designed to solve the unbalanced assignment problem with constraints (UAP-C) is presented. The GMM method iteratively selects the most probable tip-handle pairs and merges them based on a distance metric to reconstruct 3D needle paths. Evaluated on a dataset of 100 patients, the proposed method demonstrates superior performance, achieving higher precision and F1 score compared to a segmentation-based method utilizing the nnUNet model, thereby offering a more robust and accurate solution for needle localization in complex clinical scenarios.

Learning Stateful Predictive Knowledge From Experience

As large language model (LLM) agents increasingly learn from experience, they primarily rely on trajectory-level reflection to extract insights. Viewed through the lens of predictive knowledge, we argue that this approach operates on episodic hindsight rather than predictive foresight, yielding brittle, path-dependent heuristics. To address this, we propose Stateful Knowledge Learning (SKL). SKL shifts the agent's focus from trajectory-level summarization to maintaining Stateful Knowledge: explicit, declarative predictive assessments anchored to state. We first demonstrate a motivating example showing how stateful knowledge provides granularity, enhances generalization, and enables knowledge bootstrapping. To further scale up the idea, we introduce two algorithms via self-distillation (SKL-SD) and reinforcement learning (SKL-RL), training agents to autonomously extract state-grounded predictive knowledge from experience and learn to leverage it for policy making. Experiments on interactive environments (WebShop, ScienceWorld) and a complex reasoning task (ChessPuzzles) demonstrate that equipping models with the inherent ability to learn stateful predictive knowledge significantly outpaces current reflection-based training paradigms.

Sample size and power calculations for causal inference of observational studies

This paper investigates the theoretical foundation and develops analytical formulas for sample size and power calculations for causal inference with observational data. By analyzing the variance of an inverse probability weighting estimator of the average treatment effect, we decompose the power calculation into three components: propensity score distribution, potential outcome distribution, and their correlation. We show that to determine the minimal sample size of an observational study, in addition to the standard inputs in the power calculation of randomized trials, it is sufficient to have two parameters, which quantify the strength of the confounder-treatment and the confounder-outcome association, respectively. For the former, we propose using the Bhattacharyya coefficient, which measures the covariate overlap and, together with the treatment proportion, leads to a uniquely identifiable and easily computable propensity score distribution. For the latter, we propose a sensitivity parameter bounded by the R-squared statistic of the regression of the outcome on covariates. Our procedure relies on a parametric propensity score model and a semiparametric restricted mean outcome model, but does not require distributional assumptions on the multivariate covariates. We develop an associated R package PSpower and an online calculator.

Intuitive Surgical SurgToolLoc and SurgVU Challenges Results: 2022-2025

Robotic assisted (RA) surgery promises to transform surgical intervention. Intuitive Surgical is committed to fostering these changes and the machine learning models and algorithms that will enable them. With these goals in mind we have invited the surgical data science community to participate in a yearly competition hosted through the Medical Imaging Computing and Computer Assisted Interventions (MICCAI) conference. With varying changes from year to year, we have challenged the community to solve difficult machine learning problems in the context of advanced RA applications. Here we document the results of these challenges, focusing on surgical tool localization (SurgToolLoc) and surgical visual understanding (SurgVU). The publicly released dataset that accompanies these challenges is detailed in a separate paper arXiv:2501.09209 [1].

Sample size and power calculations for causal inference with time-to-event outcomes

This paper develops power and sample size formulas for causal inference with time-to-event outcomes. The target estimand is the marginal hazard ratio: the coefficient of a marginal structural Cox proportional hazard model with treatment as the only predictor. We extend the robust sandwich variance theory and derive the analytical form of the asymptotic variance for the inverse probability weighted partial likelihood estimator. Building on this, we derive a new analytical sample size formula valid at any prespecified effect size, applicable to both randomized trials and observational studies. For randomized trials, the formula requires only the canonical inputs of treatment proportion, effect size, and event rate. The new formula corrects the mischaracterization of classic log-rank-based formulas. For observational studies, one additional input suffices: an overlap coefficient summarizing covariate similarity between comparison groups. We further develop a variance inflation approach applicable to any propensity score balancing weights, anchored to the corrected baseline variance. We provide an online calculator and an R package 'PSpower' to implement the method.

Robust High-Precision Time Transfer over 91-km Hollow-Core Fiber: Immunity to Dispersion and Nonlinearity

To address the fundamental limitations imposed by chromatic dispersion and environmental susceptibility in standard single-mode fiber (SMF) for long-haul high-precision time transfer, we systematically explore the application potential of hollow-core fiber (HCF) through comparative experiments. We designed a bidirectional time transfer platform enabling direct comparison between HCF and SMF links across distances of 91 km, 68 km, and 54 km. We quantitatively characterize the impact of critical non-reciprocal error sources, specifically the optical Kerr effect and chromatic dispersion, under varying laser power, wavelength drift, and environmental perturbations. Our results show that HCF exhibits significantly suppressed dispersion, with a mean coefficient of 3.4 ps per nm per km, and reduced environmental sensitivity compared with SMF. Notably, over the 91 km link, the HCF yields a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) enhancement of more than 24 dB and confines the time deviation to less than 80 ps, which is nearly an order-of-magnitude improvement over SMF, where the time deviation exceeds 600 ps, while remaining nearly immune to power and wavelength fluctuations. Under 24 hour diurnal monitoring, the 68 km HCF link demonstrates strong robustness, with environment-induced time delay fluctuations of 776 ps, corresponding to only 24.5% of those in SMF, which reach 3166 ps. Consequently, the time transfer stability, evaluated by time deviation (TDEV), reaches 0.2 ps at an integration time of 1000 s, representing a twofold improvement over SMF. These findings validate HCF as a superior transmission medium with low latency, low nonlinearity, and high thermal stability, paving the way for next-generation ultra-stable, long-haul time-frequency distribution networks.

MieDB-100k: A Comprehensive Dataset for Medical Image Editing

The scarcity of high-quality data remains a primary bottleneck in adapting multimodal generative models for medical image editing. Existing medical image editing datasets often suffer from limited diversity, neglect of medical image understanding and inability to balance quality with scalability. To address these gaps, we propose MieDB-100k, a large-scale, high-quality and diverse dataset for text-guided medical image editing. It categorizes editing tasks into perspectives of Perception, Modification and Transformation, considering both understanding and generation abilities. We construct MieDB-100k via a data curation pipeline leveraging both modality-specific expert models and rule-based data synthetic methods, followed by rigorous manual inspection to ensure clinical fidelity. Extensive experiments demonstrate that model trained with MieDB-100k consistently outperform both open-source and proprietary models while exhibiting strong generalization ability. We anticipate that this dataset will serve as a cornerstone for future advancements in specialized medical image editing.

SenseNova-U1: Unifying Multimodal Understanding and Generation with NEO-unify Architecture

Recent large vision-language models (VLMs) remain fundamentally constrained by a persistent dichotomy: understanding and generation are treated as distinct problems, leading to fragmented architectures, cascaded pipelines, and misaligned representation spaces. We argue that this divide is not merely an engineering artifact, but a structural limitation that hinders the emergence of native multimodal intelligence. Hence, we introduce SenseNova-U1, a native unified multimodal paradigm built upon NEO-unify, in which understanding and generation evolve as synergistic views of a single underlying process. We launch two native unified variants, SenseNova-U1-8B-MoT and SenseNova-U1-A3B-MoT, built on dense (8B) and mixture-of-experts (30B-A3B) understanding baselines, respectively. Designed from first principles, they rival top-tier understanding-only VLMs across text understanding, vision-language perception, knowledge reasoning, agentic decision-making, and spatial intelligence. Meanwhile, they deliver strong semantic consistency and visual fidelity, excelling in conventional or knowledge-intensive any-to-image (X2I) synthesis, complex text-rich infographic generation, and interleaved vision-language generation, with or without think patterns. Beyond performance, we show detailed model design, data preprocessing, pre-/post-training, and inference strategies to support community research. Last but not least, preliminary evidence demonstrates that our models extend beyond perception and generation, performing strongly in vision-language-action (VLA) and world model (WM) scenarios. This points toward a broader roadmap where models do not translate between modalities, but think and act across them in a native manner. Multimodal AI is no longer about connecting separate systems, but about building a unified one and trusting the necessary capabilities to emerge from within.

EndoVGGT: GNN-Enhanced Depth Estimation for Surgical 3D Reconstruction

Accurate 3D reconstruction of deformable soft tissues is essential for surgical robotic perception. However, low-texture surfaces, specular highlights, and instrument occlusions often fragment geometric continuity, posing a challenge for existing fixed-topology approaches. To address this, we propose EndoVGGT, a geometry-centric framework equipped with a Deformation-aware Graph Attention (DeGAT) module. Rather than using static spatial neighborhoods, DeGAT dynamically constructs feature-space semantic graphs to capture long-range correlations among coherent tissue regions. This enables robust propagation of structural cues across occlusions, enforcing global consistency and improving non-rigid deformation recovery. Extensive experiments on SCARED show that our method significantly improves fidelity, increasing PSNR by 24.6% and SSIM by 9.1% over prior state-of-the-art. Crucially, EndoVGGT exhibits strong zero-shot cross-dataset generalization to the unseen SCARED and EndoNeRF domains, confirming that DeGAT learns domain-agnostic geometric priors. These results highlight the efficacy of dynamic feature-space modeling for consistent surgical 3D reconstruction.

ConFit v3: Improving Resume-Job Matching with LLM-based Re-Ranking

A reliable resume-job matching system helps a company find suitable candidates from a pool of resumes and helps a job seeker find relevant jobs from a list of job posts. While recent advances in embedding-based methods such as ConFit and ConFit v2 can efficiently retrieve candidates at scale, the lack of controllability and explainability limits their real-world adaptations. LLM-based re-rankers can address these limitations through reasoning, but existing training recipes are developed on short-document benchmarks and do not account for noise in real-world recruiting data. In this work, we first conduct a systematic analysis over the LLM re-ranker training pipeline for person-job fit, covering inference algorithm design, RL algorithm selection, data processing, and SFT distillation. We find that using multi-pass re-ranking, training with listwise RL objectives, removing noisy samples, and distilling from a stronger LLM before RL significantly improves re-ranking performance. We then aggregate these findings to train ConFit v3 with Qwen3-8B and Qwen3-32B on real-world person-job fit datasets, and find significant improvements over existing best person-job fit systems as well as strong LLMs such as GPT-5 and Claude Opus-4.5. We hope our findings provide useful insights for future research on adapting LLM-based re-rankers to person-job fit systems.

Unified Modeling of Lane and Lane Topology for Driving Scene Reasoning

Autonomous vehicles need to perceive not only physical elements in the driving scene, such as lane lines and traffic lights, but also logical elements like lane centerlines and their topology. Existing lane topology reasoning methods typically follow a reasoning-by-detection paradigm, where lane topological relationships are primarily derived from lane detection results. In this paper, we propose an innovative method called Unified Modeling of Lane and Lane Topology (UniTopo), which represents the topological relationships between lanes as connected lanes, encompassing predecessor lanes, successor lanes, and their interconnections. This unified representation of lanes and lane topology allows us to simultaneously obtain both the positions and topological information of lanes within a shared perception pipeline, establishing a new paradigm for directly perceiving lane topology from original image features. We validate our method on the driving scene reasoning benchmark OpenLane-V2, which consists of two subsets, built based on Argoverse2 and nuScenes, respectively. Our method achieves TOP_ll of 30.1% and 31.8% on the two subsets, significantly surpassing the existing state-of-the-art method T^2SG by 6.0% and 8.6%.

UWB-Fat: Non-Intrusive Body Fat Measurement Using Commodity Ultra-Wideband Radar

Body fat percentage and its spatial distribution are clinically important health indicators. However, existing measurement methods often impose a tradeoff between accuracy and accessibility. Clinical-grade techniques, such as Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) and hydrostatic weighing, provide accurate measurements but require specialized equipment and trained operators, making them difficult to access and unsuitable for everyday use. In contrast, consumer-level methods, such as Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) smart scales and skinfold calipers, are more accessible but typically provide only coarse-grained estimates, are prone to user error, or require intrusive physical contact. In this work, we present UWB-Fat, the first system that leverages commodity ultra-wideband (UWB) radar to enable non-intrusive, accessible, and accurate caliper-equivalent skinfold thickness estimation, serving as a convenient replacement for the skinfold caliper. UWB-Fat collects UWB signal at specified body sites non-intrusively without operator assistance. It extracts body-composition-related features from UWB signals by exploiting dielectric contrasts among skin, fat, and muscle tissues. Then, it uses a physics-inspired model to estimate site-specific skinfold thickness. We evaluate UWB-Fat on 15 participants, achieving a root mean square error of 0.63~mm for pooled-site subcutaneous fat thickness. These results highlight the potential of UWB-Fat to support low-cost, self-administered, and everyday body fat monitoring.
