Negative thermal expansion and antiferromagnetism in the actinide oxypnictide NpFeAsO

A neptunium analogue of the LaFeAsO tetragonal layered compound has been synthesized and characterized by a variety of experimental techniques. The occurrence of long-range magnetic order below a critical temperature T_N = 57 K is suggested by anomalies in the temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, and specific heat curves. Below T_N, powder neutron diffraction measurements reveal an antiferromagnetic structure of the Np sublattice, with an ordered magnetic moment of 1.70(0.07) μ_B aligned along the crystallographic c-axis. No magnetic order has been observed on the Fe sublattice, setting an upper limit of about 0.3 μ_B for the ordered magnetic moment on the iron. High resolution x-ray powder diffraction measurements exclude the occurrence of lattice transformations down to 5 K, in sharp contrast to the observation of a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic distortion in the rare-earth analogues, which has been associated with the stabilization of a spin density wave on the iron sublattice. Instead, a significant expansion of the NpFeAsO lattice parameters is observed with decreasing temperature below T_N, corresponding to a relative volume change of about 0.2% and to an invar behavior between 5 and 20 K. First-principle electronic structure calculations based on the local-spin density plus Coulomb interaction and the local density plus Hubbard-I approximations provide results in good agreement with the experimental findings.

Structural and magnetic properties of Mn3-xCdxTeO6 (x = 0, 1, 1.5 and 2)

Mn3TeO6 exhibits a corundum-related A3TeO6 structure and a complex magnetic structure involving two magnetic orbits for the Mn atoms [*]. Mn3-xCdxTeO6 (x=0, 1, 1.5 and 2) ceramics were synthesized by solid state reaction and investigated using X-ray powder diffraction, electron microscopy, calorimetric and magnetic measurements. Cd2+ replaces Mn2+ cations without greatly affecting the structure of the compound. The Mn and Cd cations were found to be randomly distributed over the A-site. Magnetization measurements indicated that the samples order antiferromagnetically at low temperature with a transition temperature that decreases with increasing Cd doping. The nuclear and magnetic structure of one specially prepared 114Cd containing sample: Mn1.5(114Cd)1.5TeO6, was studied using neutron powder diffraction over the temperature range 2 to 295 K. Mn1.5(114Cd)1.5TeO6 was found to order in an incommensurate helical magnetic structure, very similar to that of Mn3TeO6 [*]. However, with a lower transition temperature and the extension of the ordered structure confined to order 240(10) Å. [*] S. A. Ivanov et al. Mater. Res. Bull. 46 (2011) 1870.

Temperature-dependent multi-k magnetic structure in multiferroic Co3TeO6

A complex magnetic order of the multiferroic compound Co3TeO6 has been revealed by neutron powder diffraction studies on ceramics and crushed single crystals. The compound adopts a monoclinic structure (s.g. C2/c) in the studied temperature range 2 K - 300 K but exhibits successive antiferromagnetic transitions at low temperature. Incommensurate antiferromagnetic order with the propagation vector k1 = (0, 0.485, 0.055) sets in at 26 K. A transition to a second antiferromagnetic structure with k2 = (0, 0, 0) takes place at 21.1 K. Moreover, a transition to a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with k3 = (0, 0.5, 0.25) occurs at 17.4 K. The magnetic structures have been determined by neutron powder diffraction using group theory analysis as a preliminary tool. Different coordinations of the Co2+ ions involved in the low-symmetry C2/c structure of Co3TeO6 render the exchange-interaction network very complex by itself. The observed magnetic phase transformations are interpreted as an evidence of competing magnetic interactions. The temperature dependent changes in the magnetic structure, derived from refinements of high-resolution neutron data, are discussed and possible mechanisms connected with the spin reorientations are described.

Muon spin relaxation and neutron diffraction investigations of quadrupolar and magnetically ordered states of YbRu2Ge2

The magnetic and quadrupolar ordered states of polycrystalline YbRu2Ge2 have been investigated using zero-field muon spin relaxation (μSR) and neutron diffraction measurements. Specific heat measurements show three successive phase transitions, with decreasing temperature from a paramagnetic to a quadrupolar state at T0 ~ 10 K, from the quadrupolar to a magnetic state at T1 ~ 6.5 K and a possible change in the magnetic ground state at T2 ~ 5.5 K. Clear evidence for the magnetic transition below 7 K (spectrum at 8 K reveals paramagnetic state) and a likely change in the magnetic structure near 5.8 K is observed in the zero-field μSR measurements. The μSR data, however, do not reveal any signature of magnetic order in the temperature range 8 - 45 K. This result is further supported by neutron diffraction measurements, where clear magnetic Bragg peaks have been observed below 8 K, but not above it. Below 8 K, the magnetic Bragg peaks can be characterized by an incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering with the propagation vector q = [0.352, 0, 0] and the magnetic moment 2.9(3) μB of Yb along the b-axis. These results are discussed in terms of quadrupolar ordered and magnetically ordered states.

120° Helical Magnetic Order in the Distorted Triangular Antiferromagnet alpha-CaCr2O4

α-CaCr2O4 is a distorted triangular antiferromagnet. The magnetic Cr3+ ions which have spin-3/2 and interact with their nearest neighbors via Heisenberg direct exchange interactions, develop long-range magnetic order below T_N=42.6 K. Powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction reveal a helical magnetic structure with ordering wavevector k=(0,~1/3,0) and angles close to 120° between neighboring spins. Spherical neutron polarimetry unambiguously proves that the spins lie in the ac plane perpendicular to k. The magnetic structure is therefore that expected for an ideal triangular antiferromagnet where all nearest neighbor interactions are equal, in spite of the fact that α-CaCr2O4 is distorted with two inequivalent Cr3+ ions and four different nearest neighbor interactions. By simulating the magnetic order as a function of these four interactions it is found that the special pattern of interactions in α-CaCr2O4 stabilizes 120° helical order for a large range of exchange interactions.

New type of incommensurate magnetic ordering in Mn3TeO6

The complex metal oxide Mn3TeO6 exhibits a corundum related structure and has been prepared both in forms of single crystals by chemical transport reactions and of polycrystalline powders by a solid state reaction route. The crystal structure and magnetic properties have been investigated using a combination of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, electron microscopy, calorimetric and magnetic measurements. At room temperature this compound adopts a trigonal structure, space group R3 with a = 8.8679(1) Å, c = 10.6727(2) Å. A long-range magnetically ordered state is identified below 23 K. An unexpected feature of this magnetic structure is several types of Mn-chains. Under the action of the incommensurate magnetic propagation vector k = [0, 0, 0.4302(1)] the unique Mn site is split into two magnetically different orbits. One orbit forms a perfect helix with the spiral axis along the c-axis while the other orbit has a sine wave character along the c-axis.

Neutron diffraction studies and the magnetism of an ordered perovskite: Ba2CoTeO6

The complex perovskite Ba2CoTeO6 (BCTO) has been synthesised, and the crystal structure and magnetic properties have been investigated using a combination of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, electron microscopy and dielectric, calorimetric and magnetic measurements. It was shown that at room temperature this compound adopts the 6L-trigonal perovskite structure, space group P-3m (N 164) (a= 5.7996(1)Å, c=14.2658(3)Å). The structure comprises dimers of face-sharing octahedra as well as octahedra which share only vertices with their neighbours. A long-range antiferromagnetically ordered state has been identified from neutron diffraction and magnetic studies. The magnetic diffraction peaks were registered below the magnetic transition at about 15 K and a possible model for the magnetic structure is proposed. The structural and magnetic features of this compound are discussed and compared with those of other Co-based quaternary oxides adopting the perovskite structure.

Structural and magnetic properties of the ordered perovskite Pb2CoTeO6

The complex perovskite Pb2CoTeO6 (PCTO) has been prepared as polycrystalline powders by solid state reaction route, and the crystal structure and magnetic properties have been investigated using a combination of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, electron microscopy, dielectric, calorimetric and magnetic measurements. It was shown that at room temperature this compound adopts a trigonal perovskite structure, space group R-3 (a= 5.6782(1)Å, c= 13.8552(3)Å). The compound undergoes a number of temperature-induced phase transitions and adopts four different structures in the temperature range 5-500 K: monoclinic in P21/n(5<T<125K, tilt system (a+b-b-)), monoclinic in I2/m (125<T<210 K, tilt system (a0b-b-)), rhombohedral in R-3 (210<T<370K, tilt system (a-a-a-)), and finally cubic in Fm-3m (above 370K without any tilting). These structural phase transitions are coupled to a change in the dielectric constant and the heat capacity around 210 and 370K. A long-range antiferromagnetically ordered state has been identified from neutron powder diffraction and magnetic studies at different temperatures. Magnetic diffraction peaks were registered below the transition at about 16 K and a possible model for the magnetic structure is proposed. Possible coexistence of long-range ordering of electrical dipoles and magnetic moments at low temperatures making PCTO a multiferroic candidate is discussed and compared with those of other Co-based quaternary oxides adopting the perovskite structure.

Long-range magnetic order in CeRu2Al10 evidenced by muSR and neutron diffraction

The low temperature state of CeRu2Al10 has been studied by neutron powder diffraction and muon spin relaxation (muSR). By combining both techniques, we prove that the transition occurring below T*~27K, which has been the subject of considerable debate, is unambiguously magnetic due to the ordering of the Ce sublattice. The magnetic structure with propagation vector k=(1,0,0) involves collinear antiferromagnetic alignment of the Ce moments along the c-axis of the Cmcm space group with a reduced moment of 0.34(2)mu_B. No structural changes within the resolution limit have been detected below the transition temperature. However, the temperature dependence of the magnetic Bragg peaks and the muon precession frequency show an anomaly around T2~12 K indicating a possible second transition.

Ferromagnetically coupled Shastry-Sutherland quantum spin singlets in (CuCl)LaNb$_2$O$_7$

Using inelastic neutron scattering, x-ray, neutron diffraction, and the first-principle calculation techniques, we show that the crystal structure of the two-dimensional quantum spin system (CuCl)LaNb$_2$O$_7$ is orthorhombic with $Pbam$ symmetry in which CuCl$_4$O$_2$ octahedra are tilted from their high symmetry positions and the Cu$^{2+} (s = 1/2)$ ions form a distorted square lattice. The dominant magnetic interactions are the fourth nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions with a Cu-Cl--Cl-Cu exchange path, which lead to the formation of spin singlets. The two strongest interactions between the singlets are ferromagnetic, which makes (CuCl)LaNb$_2$O$_7$ the first system of ferromagnetically coupled Shastry-Sutherland quantum spin singlets.

Spin dynamics in the frustrated three-dimensional hyperkagom{é} compound $Gd_3 Ga_5 O_{12}$

We present the first neutron inelastic scattering results on the low temperature magnetic state of the three dimensional hyperkagomé compound Gd$_{3}$Ga$_{5}$O$_{12}$ (GGG). GGG is often classified as a strongly frustrated system with a manifold of continuously connected states. However, in contrast to the expectation of a continuum of gap-less excitations above a spin liquid-like ground state our results reveal three distinct inelastic modes found at 0.04(1), 0.12(2) an 0.58(3) meV at 0.06 K. The inelastic modes can be attributed to the magnetic ground state with the lowest and highest energy excitations showing spatial dependencies indicative of dimerized short range antiferromagnetic correlations. Short range correlations, reminiscent of spin liquid-like order, are static within the instrumental resolution (50 $μ$eV) and represent 82% of the spectral weight. Longer range correlations, first observed by Petrenko, et al.\cite{Petrenko1998, develop below 0.14 ~K within the elastic cross section. The short range static correlations and dynamic components survive to high temperatures, comparable to the nearest neighbor exchange interactions. Our results suggest that the ground state of a three dimensional hyperkagomé compound differs distinctly from its frustrated counterparts on a pyrochlore lattice and reveals a juxtaposition of spin liquid order and strong dimerised coupling.

Magnetic Structure of CaBaCo4O7: Lifting of Geometrical Frustration towards Ferrimagnetism

CaBaCo4O7 represents a new class of ferrimagnets whose structure is built up of CoO4 tetrahedra only, similarly to other members LnBaCo4O7 of the 114 series, forming an alternate stacking of kagome and triangular layers. Neutron powder diffraction reveals, that this compound exhibits the largest distortion within the 114 series, characterized by a strong buckling of the kagome layers. Differently from all other members it shows charge ordering, with Co2+ sitting on two sites (Co2, Co3) and mixed valent cobalt Co3+/Co2+L sitting on two other sites (Co1, Co4). The unique ferrimagnetic structure of this cobaltite at 4 K can be described as the assemblage of ferrimagnetic triple chains (Co1 Co2 Co3) running perpendicular to the kagome layers, ferromagnetically coupled within the layers, and antiferromagnetically coupled with a fourth cobalt species Co4. The lifting of the geometrical frustration towards ferrimagnetism, which appears in spite of the triangular topology of the cobalt lattice, is explained by the very large structural distortion, charge ordering phenomena and large cobalt valence compared to other LnBaCo4O7 oxides.

From antiferromagnetism to superconductivity in Fe 1+y(Te1-x,Sex) (0 < x < 0.20): a neutron powder diffraction analysis

The nuclear and magnetic structure of Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex) (0 < x < 0.20) compounds was analyzed between 2 K and 300 K by means of Rietveld refinement of neutron powder diffraction data. Samples with x < 0.075 undergo a tetragonal to monoclinic phase transition at low temperature, whose critical temperature decreases with increasing Se content; this structural transition is strictly coupled to a long range antiferromagnetic ordering at the Fe site. Both the transition to a monoclinic phase and the long range antiferromagnetism are suppressed for 0.10 < x < 0.20. The onset of the structural and of the magnetic transition remains coincident with the increase of Se substitution. The low temperature monoclinic crystal structure has been revised. Superconductivity arises for x > 0.05, therefore a significant region where superconductivity and long range antiferromagnetism coexist is present in the pseudo-binary FeTe - FeSe phase diagram.

Neutron powder diffraction investigation of the structural and magnetic properties of (La1-yYy)FeAsO

The structural, magnetic and resistive properties of (La1-yYy)FeAsO compounds (y = 0.10, 0.20, 0.30) have been investigated by means of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction as well as by resistivity measurements. The temperatures at which the structural transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic and the magnetic ordering take place progressively reduce by similar amounts with increasing Y substitution on account of the progressive chemical pressure increase. We propose that the structural transition could be originated by a cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion involving the alignment of the fully occupied Fe 3d(z2) orbitals in the Fe plane along the y axis, leading to the branching of the cell parameters a and b. The magnetic structure develops after the occurrence of the structural transition, but before its completion.

Toward Perfection: Kapellasite, Cu3Zn(OH)6Cl2, a New Model S = 1/2 Kagome Antiferromagnet

The search for the resonating valence bond (RVB) state continues to underpin many areas of condensed matter research. The RVB is made from the dimerisation of spins on different sites into fluctuating singlets, and was proposed by Anderson to be the reference state from which the transition to BCS superconductivity occurs. Little is known about the state experimentally, due to the scarcity of model materials. Theoretical work has put forward the S = 1/2 kagome antiferromagnet (KAFM) as a good candidate for the realization of the RVB state. In this paper we introduce a new model system, the S = 1/2 KAFM Kapellasite, Cu3Zn(OH)6Cl2. We show that its crystal structure is a good approximation to a 2-dimensional kagome antiferromagnet and that susceptibility data indicate a collapse of the magnetic moment below T = 25 K that is compatible with the spins condensing into the non-magnetic RVB state.

High and low-temperature crystal and magnetic structures of epsilon-Fe2O3 and their correlation to its magnetic properties

The crystal and magnetic structures of the orthorhombic e-Fe2O3 have been studied by simultaneous Rietveld refinement of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction data in combination with Mossbauer spectroscopy, as well as magnetisation and heat capacity measurements. It has been found that above 150 K the e-Fe2O3 polymorph is a collinear ferrimagnet with the magnetic moments directed along the a axis, while the magnetic ordering below 80 K is characterised by a square-wave incommensurate structure. The transformation between these two states is a second order phase transition and involves subtle structural changes mostly affecting the coordination of the tetrahedral and one of the octahedral Fe sites. The temperature dependence of the e-Fe2O3 magnetic properties is discussed in the light of these results.

Structural phase separation in La2/3Ba1/3MnO3: macroscopic and microscopic aspects

The structural phase transformation in the La2/3Ba1/3MnO3 perovskite manganite was studied by ultrasound, neutron diffraction and electron microscopy techniques. Minima of the velocity and maxima of the decrement of the ultrasound point out the structural transition temperature Ts=200 K. The hysteretic temperature behavior and giant alteration of the ultrasound velocity and decrement present an evidence of martensitic character of the phase transition at a macroscopic level. The martensitic transformation in La2/3Ba1/3MnO3 is tightly connected with electronic transitions in both coexisting high symmetry R3c and low symmetry Imma crystal phases. Neutron diffraction data show that the electronic structure of the compound exhibits anomalous behavior in the vicinity of Ts: temperature dependences of the Mn-O-Mn bond angles and Mn-O bond lengths have singularities. Parameters of the coexisting crystalline phases studied have different character of temperature correlation with parameters of the magnetic subsystem of the compound.

Neutron inelastic scattering investigation of the magnetic excitations in Cu_2Te_2O_5X_2 (X=Br, Cl)

Neutron inelastic scattering investigations have been performed on the spin tetrahedral system Cu_2Te_2O_5X_2 (X = Cl, Br). We report the observation of magnetic excitations with a dispersive component in both compounds, associated with the 3D incommensurate magnetic order that develops below $T^{Cl}_{N}$=18.2 K and $T^{Br}_{N}$=11.4 K. The excitation in Cu_2Te_2O_5Cl_2 softens as the temperature approaches $T^{Cl}_{N}$, leaving diffuse quasi-elastic scattering above the transition temperature. In the bromide, the excitations are present well above $T^{Br}_{N}$, which might be attributed to the presence of a degree of low dimensional correlations above $T^{Br}_{N}$ in this compound.
