Excited hadrons from improved interpolating fields

The calculation of quark propagators for Ginsparg-Wilson-type Dirac operators is costly and thus limited to a few different sources. We present a new approach for determining spatially optimized operators for lattice spectroscopy of excited hadrons. Jacobi smeared quark sources with different widths are combined to construct hadron operators with different spatial wave functions. We study the Roper state and excited rho and pion mesons.

Spatially improved operators for excited hadrons on the lattice

We present a new approach for determining spatially optimized operators that can be used for lattice spectroscopy of excited hadrons. Jacobi smeared quark sources with different widths are combined to construct hadron operators with different spatial wave functions. We use the variational method to determine those linear combinations of operators that have optimal overlap with ground and excited states. The details of the new approach are discussed and we demonstrate the power of the method using examples from quenched baryon and meson spectroscopy. In particular we study the Roper state and rho(1450) and discuss some physical implications of our tests.

Excited nucleons with chirally improved fermions

We study positive and negative parity nucleons on the lattice using the chirally improved lattice Dirac operator. Our analysis is based on a set of three operators chi_i with the nucleon quantum numbers but in different representations of the chiral group and with different diquark content. We use a variational method to separate ground state and excited states and determine the mixing coefficients for the optimal nucleon operators in terms of the chi_i. We clearly identify the negative parity resonances N(1535) and N(1650) and their masses agree well with experimental data. The mass of the observed excited positive parity state is too high to be interpreted as the Roper state. Our results for the mixing coefficients indicate that chiral symmetry is important for N(1535) and N(1650) states. We confront our data for the mixing coefficients with quark models and provide insights into the physics of the nucleon system and the nature of strong decays.

Topological lumps and Dirac zero modes in SU(3) lattice gauge theory on the torus

We compute eigenmodes of the lattice Dirac operator for quenched SU(3) gauge configurations on the 4-torus with topological charge 1. We find a strong dependence of the zero modes on the boundary conditions which we impose for the Dirac operator. The lumps seen by the eigenmodes often change their position when changing the boundary conditions, while the local chirality of the lumps remains the same. Our results show that the zero mode of a charge 1 configuration can couple to more than one object. We address the question whether these objects could be fractionally charged lumps.

Quenched spectroscopy with fixed-point and chirally improved fermions

We present results from quenched spectroscopy calculations with the parametrized fixed-point and the chirally improved Dirac operators. Both these operators are approximate solutions of the Ginsparg-Wilson equation and have good chiral properties. This allows us to work at small quark masses and we explore pseudoscalar-mass to vector-mass ratios down to 0.28. We discuss meson and baryon masses, their scaling properties, finite volume effects and compare our results with recent large scale simulations. We find that the size of quenching artifacts of the masses is strongly correlated with their experimentally observed widths and that the gauge and hadronic scales are consistent.

Searching for KvBLL calorons in SU(3) lattice gauge field ensembles

We discuss Kraan - van Baal - Lee - Lu (KvBLL) solutions of the classical Yang-Mills equations with temperature in the context of SU(3) lattice gauge theory. We present discretized lattice versions of KvBLL solutions and other dyonic structures, obtained by cooling in order to understand their variety and signature. An analysis of the zero modes of the lattice Dirac operator for different fermionic boundary conditions gives clear evidence for a KvBLL-like background of finite T lattice subensembles with Q = +/-1. Using APE-smearing we are able to study the topological charge density q(x) of the configurations and to corroborate this interpretation.

New findings for topological excitations in SU(3) lattice gauge theory

We probe the SU(3) vacuum using eigenvectors of the Dirac operator with an arbitrary phase for the temporal boundary condition. We consider configurations with topological charge |Q| = 1 near the QCD phase transition and at low temperatures on a torus. For all our ensembles we show that the zero-mode of the Dirac operator changes its position as one changes the phase of the boundary condition. For ensembles near the QCD phase transition our results closely resemble the behavior of zero-modes for Kraan - van Baal solutions of the classical Yang-Mills equations where the individual lumps are interpreted as monopoles. Our findings near T_c and on the torus show that for both cases an excitation with topological charge |Q| = 1 is built from several separate lumps.

Calorons, instantons and constituent monopoles in SU(3) lattice gauge theory

We analyze the zero-modes of the Dirac operator in quenched SU(3) gauge configurations at non-zero temperature and compare periodic and anti-periodic temporal boundary conditions for the fermions. It is demonstrated that for the different boundary conditions often the modes are localized at different space-time points and have different sizes. Our observations are consistent with patterns expected for Kraan - van Baal solutions of the classical Yang-Mills equations. These solutions consist of constituent monopoles and the zero-modes are localized on different constituents for different boundary conditions. Our findings indicate that the excitations of the QCD vacuum are more structured than simple instanton-like lumps.

Recent results from systematic parameterizations of Ginsparg-Wilson fermions

The Fixed Point Dirac Operator and Chirally Improved Fermions both use large numbers of gauge paths and the full Dirac structure to approximate a solution of the Ginsparg-Wilson equation. After a brief review of the two approaches we present recent results for quenched QCD with pion masses down to 210 MeV. We discuss the limits and advantages of approximate parameterizations and outline future perspectives.

Quenched QCD with fixed-point and chirally improved fermion

In this contribution we present results from quenched QCD simulations with the parameterized fixed-point (FP) and the chirally improved (CI) Dirac operator. Both these operators are approximate solutions of the Ginsparg-Wilson equation and have good chiral properties. We focus our discussion on observables sensitive to chirality. In particular we explore pion masses down to 210 MeV in light hadron spectroscopy, quenched chiral logs, the pion decay constant and the pion scattering length. We discuss finite volume effects, scaling properties of the FP and CI operators and performance issues in their numerical implementation.

Testing the self-duality of topological lumps in SU(3) lattice gauge theory

We discuss a simple formula which connects the field-strength tensor to a spectral sum over certain quadratic forms of the eigenvectors of the lattice Dirac operator. We analyze these terms for the near zero-modes and find that they give rise to contributions which are essentially either self-dual or anti self-dual. Modes with larger eigenvalues in the bulk of the spectrum are more dominated by quantum fluctuations and are less (anti) self-dual. In the high temperature phase of QCD we find considerably reduced (anti) self-duality for the modes near the edge of the spectral gap.

The topological susceptibility of SU(3) gauge theory near T_c

We compute the topological susceptibility chi_t in SU(3) lattice gauge theory using fermionic methods based on the Atiyah-Singer index theorem. Near the phase transition we find a smooth crossover behavior for chi_t with values decreasing from (191(5) MeV)^4 to (100(5) MeV)^4 as we increase the temperature from 0.88 T_c to 1.31 T_c, showing that topological excitations exist far above T_c. Our study is the first large scale analysis of the topological susceptibility at high temperature based on the index theorem and the results agree well with field theoretical methods.

Setting the scale for the Luescher-Weisz action

We study the quark-antiquark potential of quenched SU(3) lattice gauge theory with the Luescher-Weisz action. After blocking the gauge fields with the recently proposed hypercubic transformation we compute the Sommer parameter, extract the lattice spacing a and set the scale at 6 different values of the gauge coupling in a range from a = 0.084 fm to 0.136 fm.

Chiral symmetry restoration and the Z3 sectors of QCD

Quenched SU(3) lattice gauge theory shows three phase transitions, namely the chiral, the deconfinement and the Z3 phase transition. Knowing whether or not the chiral and the deconfinement phase transition occur at the same temperature for all Z3 sectors could be crucial to understand the underlying microscopic dynamics. We use the existence of a gap in the Dirac spectrum as an order parameter for the restoration of chiral symmetry. We find that the spectral gap opens up at the same critical temperature in all Z3 sectors in contrast to earlier claims in the literature.

Improving the Dirac Operator in Lattice QCD

Recently various new concepts for the construction of Dirac operators in lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) have been introduced. These operators satisfy the so-called Ginsparg-Wilson condition (GWC), thus obeying the Atiyah-Singer index theorem and violating chiral symmetry only in a modest and local form. Here we present studies in 4-d for SU(3) gauge configurations with non-trivial topological content. We study the flow of eigenvalues and we compare the numerical stability and efficiency of a recently suggested chirally improved operator with that of others in this respect.

A comprehensive picture of topological excitations in finite temperature lattice QCD

We study spectra, localization properties and local chirality of eigenvectors of the lattice Dirac operator. We analyze ensembles of quenched SU(3) configurations on both sides of the QCD phase transition. Our Dirac operator is a systematic expansion in path length of a solution of the Ginsparg-Wilson equation. Analyzing the finite volume behavior of our observables and their scaling with the gauge coupling we come up with a consistent picture of topological excitations on both sides of the QCD phase transition. Our results support the interpretation of the dominant gauge field excitations seen by the Dirac operator as a fluid of instanton-like objects.

Comparing lattice Dirac operators in smooth instanton backgrounds

We compare the behavior of different lattice Dirac operators in gauge backgrounds which are lattice discretizations of a classical instanton. In particular we analyze the standard Wilson operator, a chirally improved Dirac operator and the overlap operators constructed from these two operators. We discuss the flow of real eigenvalues as a function of the instanton size. An analysis of the eigenvectors shows that overlap fermions with the Wilson operator as input operator have difficulties with reproducing the continuum zero mode already for moderately small instantons. This problem is greatly reduced when using the chirally improved operator for the overlap projection.
