Fifteen years of Gamma-Ray Burst observations at Very High Energies with H.E.S.S

We present results from the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) follow-up observations of Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) between 2004 and 2019. We are focusing on non-detections and providing the most extensive set of very-high-energy (VHE, >100 GeV) upper limits to date. We use this catalogue to constrain the properties of VHE-detected GRBs and compare them to those detected at VHE. Our study finds that VHE-detected GRBs are not a distinct population but are instead associated with bright X-ray afterglows and low redshifts. In addition, we model the multi-wavelength emission of a few of the observed GRBs and discuss the results in the context of their obtained microphysical parameters. The results from this work help put current VHE observations into perspective and highlight the capabilities of next-generation instruments, in detecting fainter and more distant GRBs at VHE.

Weak lensing combined with the kinetic Sunyaev Zel'dovich effect: A study of baryonic feedback

Extracting precise cosmology from weak lensing surveys requires modelling the non-linear matter power spectrum, which is suppressed at small scales due to baryonic feedback processes. However, hydrodynamical galaxy formation simulations make widely varying predictions for the amplitude and extent of this effect. We use measurements of Dark Energy Survey Year 3 weak lensing (WL) and Atacama Cosmology Telescope DR5 kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) to jointly constrain cosmological and astrophysical baryonic feedback parameters using a flexible analytical model, `baryonification'. First, using WL only, we compare the $S_8$ constraints using baryonification to a simulation-calibrated halo model, a simulation-based emulator model and the approach of discarding WL measurements on small angular scales. We find that model flexibility can shift the value of $S_8$ and degrade the uncertainty. The kSZ provides additional constraints on the astrophysical parameters and shifts $S_8$ to $S_8=0.823^{+0.019}_{-0.020}$, a higher value than attained using the WL-only analysis. We measure the suppression of the non-linear matter power spectrum using WL + kSZ and constrain a mean feedback scenario that is more extreme than the predictions from most hydrodynamical simulations. We constrain the baryon fractions and the gas mass fractions and find them to be generally lower than inferred from X-ray observations and simulation predictions. We conclude that the WL + kSZ measurements provide a new and complementary benchmark for building a coherent picture of the impact of gas around galaxies across observations.

agnpy: An open-source python package modelling the radiative processes of jetted active galactic nuclei

Modelling the broadband emission of jetted active galactic nuclei (AGN) constitutes one of the main research topics of extragalactic astrophysics in the multi-wavelength and multi-messenger domain. We present agnpy, an open-source python package modelling the radiative processes of relativistic particles accelerated in the jets of active galactic nuclei. The package includes classes describing the galaxy components responsible for line and thermal emission and calculates the absorption due to $\gamma\gamma$ pair production on several photon fields. agnpy aims at extending the effort of modelling and interpreting the emission of extragalactic sources to a wide number of astrophysicists. We present the package content and illustrate a few examples of applications of its functionalities. We validate the software by comparing its results against the literature and against other open-source software. We illustrate the utility of agnpy in addressing the most common questions encountered while modelling the emission of jetted active galaxies. When comparing its results against the literature and other modelling tools adopting the same physical assumptions, we achieve an agreement within $10-30\%$. agnpy represents one of the first systematic and validated collection of established radiative processes for jetted active galaxies in an open-source python package. We hope it will stand also among the first endeavours providing reproducible and transparent astrophysical software not only for data reduction and analysis, but also for modelling and interpretation.

Nanowires: A route to efficient thermoelectric devices

Miniaturization of electronic devices aims at manufacturing ever smaller products, from mesoscopic to nanoscopic sizes. This trend is challenging because the increased levels of dissipated power demands a better understanding of heat transport in small volumes. A significant amount of the consumed energy is transformed into heat and dissipated to the environment. Thermoelectric materials offer the possibility to harness dissipated energy and make devices less energy-demanding. Heat-to-electricity conversion requires materials with a strongly suppressed thermal conductivity but still high electronic conduction. Nanowires can meet nicely these two requirements because enhanced phonon scattering at the surface and defects reduces the lattice thermal conductivity while electric conductivity is not deteriorated, leading to an overall remarkable thermoelectric efficiency. Therefore, nanowires are regarded as a promising route to achieving valuable thermoelectric materials at the nanoscale. In this paper, we present an overview of key experimental and theoretical results concerning the thermoelectric properties of nanowires. The focus of this review is put on the physical mechanisms by which the efficiency of nanowires can be improved. Phonon scattering at surfaces and interfaces, enhancement of the power factor by quantum effects and topological protection of electron states to prevent the degradation of electrical conductivity in nanowires are thoroughly discussed.

Early science with the Large Millimetre Telescope: An LMT/AzTEC 1.1 mm Survey of Dense Cores in the Monoceros R2 Giant Molecular Cloud

We present a 1.1~mm census of dense cores in the Mon~R2 Giant Molecular Cloud with the AzTEC instrument on the Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT). We detect 295 cores (209 starless, and 86 with protostars) in a two square degree shallow survey. We also carry out a deep follow-up survey of 9 regions with low to intermediate ($3 $10~$M_{\odot}$ are exclusively found in regions with high core number densities and that the CMF of the starless cores has an excess of low-mass cores ($<$5~$M_{\odot}$) compared to the CMF of protostellar cores. We report a power law correlation of index $1.99 \pm 0.03$ between local core mass density and gas column density (as traced by Herschel) over a wide range of size scales (0.3-5~pc). This power law is consistent with that predicted for thermal fragmentation of a self-gravitating sheet.

Run-Wise Simulations for Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope Arrays

We present a new paradigm for the simulation of arrays of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) which overcomes limitations of current approaches. Up to now, all major IACT experiments rely on the same Monte-Carlo simulation strategy, using predefined observation and instrument settings. Simulations with varying parameters are generated to provide better estimates of the Instrument Response Functions (IRFs) of different observations. However, a large fraction of the simulation configuration remains preserved, leading to complete negligence of all related influences. Additionally, the simulation scheme relies on interpolations between different array configurations, which are never fully reproducing the actual configuration for a given observation. Interpolations are usually performed on zenith angles, off-axis angles, array multiplicity, and the optical response of the instrument. With the advent of hybrid systems consisting of a large number of IACTs with different sizes, types, and camera configurations, the complexity of the interpolation and the size of the phase space becomes increasingly prohibitive. Going beyond the existing approaches, we introduce a new simulation and analysis concept which takes into account the actual observation conditions as well as individual telescope configurations of each observation run of a given data set. These run-wise simulations (RWS) thus exhibit considerably reduced systematic uncertainties compared to the existing approach, and are also more computationally efficient and simple. The RWS framework has been implemented in the H.E.S.S. software and tested, and is already being exploited in science analysis.

Target of Opportunity Observations of Blazars with H.E.S.S

The very-high-energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) extragalactic sky is dominated by blazars, a class of active galactic nuclei which show rapid variability at all wavelengths. Target of Opportunity (ToO) observations triggered by flaring activity detected at longer wavelengths are, thus, an important part of the blazar observing strategy of H.E.S.S., an array of five imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes sensitive to VHE photons. In this contribution we detail the H.E.S.S. extragalactic ToO program, describing the specific procedures currently in place to follow up on multi-wavelength alerts. The program is illustrated by discussing a few recent noteworthy targets observed with the H.E.S.S. phase II array over the last two years of blazar ToO observations.

First NuSTAR observations of the BL Lac - type blazar PKS~2155-304: constraints on the jet content and distribution of radiating particles

We report the first hard X-ray observations with NuSTAR of the BL Lac type blazar PKS 2155-304, augmented with soft X-ray data from XMM-Newton and gamma-ray data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope, obtained in April 2013 when the source was in a very low flux state. A joint NuSTAR and XMM spectrum, covering the energy range 0.5 - 60 keV, is best described by a model consisting of a log-parabola component with curvature beta = 0.3(+0.2,-0.1) and a (local) photon index 3.04 +/- 0.15 at photon energy of 2 keV, and a hard power-law tail with photon index 2.2 +/- 0.4. The hard X-ray tail can be smoothly joined to the quasi-simultaneous gamma-ray spectrum by a synchrotron self-Compton component produced by an electron distribution with index p = 2.2. Assuming that the power-law electron distribution extends down to the minimum electron Lorentz factor gamma_min = 1 and that there is one proton per electron, an unrealistically high total jet power L_p of roughly 10^47 erg/s is inferred. This can be reduced by two orders of magnitude either by considering a significant presence of electron-positron pairs with lepton-to-proton ratio of at least 30, or by introducing an additional, low-energy break in the electron energy distribution at the electron Lorentz factor gamma_br1 of roughly 100. In either case, the jet composition is expected to be strongly matter-dominated.

GammaLib and ctools: A software framework for the analysis of astronomical gamma-ray data

The field of gamma-ray astronomy has seen important progress during the last decade, yet there exists so far no common software framework for the scientific analysis of gamma-ray telescope data. We propose to fill this gap by means of the GammaLib software, a generic library that we have developed to support the analysis of gamma-ray event data. GammaLib has been written in C++ and all functionality is available in Python through an extension module. On top of this framework we have developed the ctools software package, a suite of software tools that enables building of flexible workflows for the analysis of Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescope event data. The ctools are inspired by science analysis software available for existing high-energy astronomy instruments, and they follow the modular ftools model developed by the High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center. The ctools have been written in Python and C++, and can be either used from the command line, via shell scripts, or directly from Python. In this paper we present the GammaLib and ctools software versions 1.0 that have been released end of 2015. GammaLib and ctools are ready for the science analysis of Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescope event data, and also support the analysis of Fermi-LAT data and the exploitation of the COMPTEL legacy data archive. We propose to use ctools as the Science Tools software for the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory.

Experimental verification of reciprocity relations in quantum thermoelectric transport

Symmetry relations are manifestations of fundamental principles and constitute cornerstones of modern physics. An example are the Onsager relations between coefficients connecting thermodynamic fluxes and forces, central to transport theory and experiments. Initially formulated for classical systems, these reciprocity relations are also fulfilled in quantum conductors. Surprisingly, novel relations have been predicted specifically for thermoelectric transport. However, whereas these thermoelectric reciprocity relations have to date not been verified, they have been predicted to be sensitive to inelastic scattering, always present at finite temperature. The question whether the relations exist in practice is important for thermoelectricity: whereas their existence may simplify the theory of complex thermoelectric materials, their absence has been shown to enable, in principle, higher thermoelectric energy conversion efficiency for a given material quality. Here we experimentally verify the thermoelectric reciprocity relations in a four-terminal mesoscopic device where each terminal can be electrically and thermally biased, individually. The linear response thermoelectric coefficients are found to be symmetric under simultaneous reversal of magnetic field and exchange of injection and emission contacts. Intriguingly, we also observe the breakdown of the reciprocity relations as a function of increasing thermal bias. Our measurements thus clearly establish the existence of the thermoelectric reciprocity relations, as well as the possibility to control their breakdown with the potential to enhance thermoelectric performance

New AGNs discovered by H.E.S.S

During the last year, six new Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) have been discovered and studied by H.E.S.S. at Very High Energies (VHE). Some of these recent discoveries have been made thanks to new enhanced analysis methods and are presented at this conference for the first time. The three blazars 1ES 0414+009, SHBL J001355.9-185406 and 1RXS J101015.9-311909 have been targeted for observation due to their high levels of radio and X-ray fluxes, while the Fermi/LAT catalogue of bright sources triggered the observation of PKS 0447-439 and AP Librae. Additionally, the BL Lac 1ES 1312-423 was discovered in the field-of-view (FoV) of Centaurus A thanks to the large exposure dedicated by H.E.S.S. to this particularly interesting source. The newly-discovered sources are presented here and in three companion presentations at this conference.

Fermi observations of TeV AGN

We report on observations of TeV-selected AGN made during the first 5.5 months of observations with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on-board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi). In total, 28 TeV AGN were selected for study. The Fermi observations show clear detections of 21 of these TeV-selected objects. Most can be described with a power law of spectral index harder than 2, with a spectral break generally required to accommodate the TeV measurements. Evidence for systematic evolution of the gamma-ray spectrum with redshift is presented and discussed in the context of the EBL.

Fermi observations of TeV-selected AGN

We report on observations of TeV-selected AGN made during the first 5.5 months of observations with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on-board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi). In total, 96 AGN were selected for study, each being either (i) a source detected at TeV energies (28 sources) or (ii) an object that has been studied with TeV instruments and for which an upper-limit has been reported (68 objects). The Fermi observations show clear detections of 38 of these TeV-selected objects, of which 21 are joint GeV-TeV sources and 29 were not in the third EGRET catalog. For each of the 38 Fermi-detected sources, spectra and light curves are presented. Most can be described with a power law of spectral index harder than 2.0, with a spectral break generally required to accommodate the TeV measurements. Based on an extrapolation of the Fermi spectrum, we identify sources, not previously detected at TeV energies, which are promising targets for TeV instruments. Evidence for systematic evolution of the $γ$-ray spectrum with redshift is presented and discussed in the context of interaction with the EBL.

Limited local electron-lattice coupling in manganites

(Pr,Ca)MnO3 is the archetypal charge-ordered manganite, but in Pr0.48Ca0.52MnO3 we find (using convergent-beam electron diffraction and dark-field images) that the superlattice period is locally incommensurate with respect to the parent lattice, and that the superlattice orientation possesses significant local variations. This suggests that local electron-lattice coupling never overwhelmingly dominates the rich physics of manganites, even in the most extreme scenarios that produce the largest colossal magnetoresistance effects.

Resonant tunneling diode with spin polarized injector

We investigate the current-voltage characteristics of a II-VI semiconductor resonant-tunneling diode coupled to a diluted magnetic semiconductor injector. As a result of an external magnetic field, a giant Zeeman splitting develops in the injector, which modifies the band structure of the device, strongly affecting the transport properties. We find a large increase in peak amplitude accompanied by a shift of the resonance to higher voltages with increasing fields. We discuss a model which shows that the effect arises from a combination of three-dimensional incident distribution, giant Zeeman spin splitting and broad resonance linewidth.

Large domain wall resistance in self-organised manganite film

The electrical resistance of magnetic domain walls in ferromagnetic metallic manganites can be enhanced to 10-12 Ohm.m2 by patterning nanoconstrictions [J. Appl. Phys. 89, 6955 (2001)]. We show equally large enhancements in a phase separated La0.60Ca0.40MnO3 manganite film without recourse to nanopatterning. The domain walls were measured in the current-perpendicular-to-the-plane (CPP) geometry between ferromagnetic metallic La0.70Ca0.30MnO3 electrodes patterned like magnetic tunnel junctions.

High resolution determination of ferromagnetic metallic limit in epitaxial La1-xCaxMnO3 films on NdGaO3

The physical properties of manganites depend strongly on sample morphology, probably due to strain. We investigate the influence of NdGaO3 substrates on the limit of the ferromagnetic-metallic phase field in La1-xCaxMnO3, doping with x=1% resolution. Films with x=0.40 show a metal-insulator transition, but the ferromagnetic volume fraction is half the spin aligned value. Films with x=0.41 are similar but the metal-insulator transition is not always seen. Films with x=0.42, 0.43, 0.44, 0.45 are insulating, and the magnetization is dramatically reduced. The observed phase boundary indicates where to search for enhanced phase separation effects that may be exploited in thin films and devices.

Magnetic field symmetry and phase rigidity of the nonlinear conductance in a ring

We have performed nonlinear transport measurements as a function of a perpendicular magnetic field in a semiconductor Aharonov-Bohm ring connected to two leads. While the voltage-symmetric part of the conductance is symmetric in magnetic field, the voltage-antisymmetric part of the conductance is not symmetric. These symmetry relations are compatible with the scattering theory for nonlinear mesoscopic transport. The observed asymmetry can be tuned continuously by changing the gate voltages near the arms of the ring, showing that the phase of the nonlinear conductance in a two-terminal interferometer is not rigid, in contrast to the case for the linear conductance.
