Magneto-optical signature of massless Kane electrons in Cd3As2

We report on optical reflectivity experiments performed on Cd3As2 over a broad range of photon energies and magnetic fields. The observed response clearly indicates the presence of 3D massless charge carriers. The specific cyclotron resonance absorption in the quantum limit implies that we are probing massless Kane electrons rather than symmetry-protected 3D Dirac particles. The latter may appear at a smaller energy scale and are not directly observed in our infrared experiments.

Rise and fall of shape resonances in thin films of BCS superconductors

The confinement of a superconductor in a thin film changes its Fermi-level density of states and is expected to change its critical temperature $T_c$. Previous calculations have reported large discontinuities of $T_c$ when the chemical potential coincides with a subband edge. By solving the BCS gap equation exactly, we show that such discontinuities are artifacts and that $T_c$ is a continuous function of the film thickness. We also find that $T_c$ is reduced in thin films compared with the bulk if the confinement potential is lower than a critical value, while for stronger confinement $T_c$ increases with decreasing film thickness, reaches a maximum, and eventually drops to zero. Our numerical results are supported by several exact solutions. We finally interpret experimental data for ultrathin lead thin films in terms of a thickness-dependent effective mass.

Multiband superconductivity due to the electron - LO-phonon interaction in strontium titanate and on a SrTiO3/LaAlO3 interface

In strontium titanate, the Froehlich electron - LO-phonon interaction dominates the electron response and can also provide superconductivity. Because of high LO-phonon frequencies in SrTiO3, the superconducting system is non-adiabatic. We demonstrate that the dielectric function approach is an adequate theoretical method for superconductivity in SrTiO3 and on the SrTiO3-LaAlO3 interface. The critical temperatures are calculated using realistic material parameters. The obtained critical temperatures are in line with experimental data both for bulk and interface superconductivity. The present method explains the observed multi-dome shape of the critical temperature in SrTiO3 as a function of the electron concentration due to multiband superconductivity.

BCS superconductivity near the band edge: Exact results for one and several bands

We revisit the problem of a BCS superconductor in the regime where the Fermi energy is smaller than the Debye energy. This regime is relevant for low-density superconductors such as SrTiO$_3$ that are not in the BEC limit, as well as in the problem of "shape resonances" associated with the confinement of a three-dimensional superconductor. While the problem is not new, exact results were lacking in the low-density limit. In two dimensions, we find that the initial rise of the pairing temperature $T_c$ at low density $n$ is nonanalytic and faster than any power of $n$. In three dimensions, we also find that $T_c$ is nonanalytic, but starts with zero slope at weak coupling and infinite slope at strong coupling. Self-consistent treatment of the chemical potential and energy dependence of the density of states are crucial ingredients to obtain these results. We also present exact results for multiband systems and confirm our analytical expressions by numerical simulations.

Temperature-dependent ellipsometry measurements of partial Coulomb energy in superconducting cuprates

We performed an experimental study of the temperature and doping dependence of the energy-loss function of the bilayer and trilayer Bi-cuprate family. The primary aim is to obtain information on the energy stored in the Coulomb interaction between the conduction electrons, on the temperature dependence thereof, and on the change of Coulomb interaction when Cooper-pairs are formed. We performed temperature-dependent ellipsometry measurements on several Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8-x}$ single crystals: under-doped with $T_c=60, 70$ and 83K, optimally doped with $T_c=91$K, overdoped with $T_c=84, 81, 70$ and $58$K, as well as optimally doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+x}$ with $T_c=110$K. Our first observation is that, as the temperature drops through $T_c$, the loss function in the range up to 2~eV displays a change of temperature dependence as compared to the temperature dependence in the normal state. This effect at - or close to - $T_c$ depends strongly on doping, with a sign-change for weak overdoping. The size of the observed change in Coulomb energy, using an extrapolation with reasonable assumptions about its $q$-dependence, is about the same size as the condensation energy that has been measured in these compounds. Our results therefore lend support to the notion that the Coulomb energy is an important factor for stabilizing the superconducting phase. Due to the restriction to small momentum, our observations do not exclude a possible significant contribution to the condensation energy of the Coulomb energy associated to the region of $q$ around $(π,π)$.

Jahn-Teller induced nematic orbital order in tetragonal Sr$_2$VO$_4$

Using high resolution X-Ray diffraction (XRD) on high purity powders, we resolved the structure and $ab$ symmetry of the intriguing compound \svo$ $ from room temperature down to 20 K to an unprecedented level of accuracy. Upon cooling, this new set of data unambiguously reveals a second order phase transition lowering the symmetry from tetragonal to orthorhombic at a temperature $T_{c2}=136$ K. The observation of an orthorhombic distortion of the $ab$-plane is attributed to nematic phase formation supported by local Jahn-Teller (JT) dynamical instability. At $T_{N}=105$ K, spins order and at $T_{c1}=100$ K the tetragonal structure is recovered with an elongated c-axis.

Optical spectroscopy and the nature of the insulating state of rare-earth nickelates

Using a combination of spectroscopic ellipsometry and DC transport measurements, we determine the temperature dependence of the optical conductivity of NdNiO$_3$ and SmNiO$_{3}$ films. The optical spectra show the appearance of a characteristic two-peak structure in the near-infrared when the material passes from the metal to the insulator phase. Dynamical mean-field theory calculations confirm this two-peak structure, and allow to identify these spectral changes and the associated changes in the electronic structure. We demonstrate that the insulating phase in these compounds and the associated characteristic two-peak structure are due to the combined effect of bond-disproportionation and Mott physics associated with half of the disproportionated sites. We also provide insights into the structure of excited states above the gap.

The fate of quasiparticles in the superconducting state

Quasiparticle properties in the superconducting state are masked by the superfluid and are not directly accessible to infrared spectroscopy. We show how one can use a Kramers--Kronig transformation to separate the quasiparticle from superfluid response and extract intrinsic quasiparticle properties in the superconducting state. We also address the issue of a narrow quasiparticle peak observed in microwave measurements, and demonstrate how it can be combined with infrared measurements to obtain unified picture of electrodynamic properties of cuprate superconductors.

Optical Response of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ Reveals Universal Fermi-liquid Scaling and Quasiparticles Beyond Landau Theory

We report optical measurements demonstrating that the low-energy relaxation rate ($1/τ$) of the conduction electrons in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ obeys scaling relations for its frequency ($ω$) and temperature ($T$) dependence in accordance with Fermi-liquid theory. In the thermal relaxation regime, $1/τ\propto (\hbarω)^2 + (pπ\kB T)^2$ with $p=2$, and $ω/T$ scaling applies. Many-body electronic structure calculations using dynamical mean-field theory confirm the low-energy Fermi-liquid scaling, and provide quantitative understanding of the deviations from Fermi-liquid behavior at higher energy and temperature. The excess optical spectral weight in this regime provides evidence for strongly dispersing "resilient" quasiparticle excitations above the Fermi energy.

Optical properties of BiTeBr and BiTeCl

We present a comparative study of the optical properties - reflectance, transmission and optical conductivity - and Raman spectra of two layered bismuth-tellurohalides BiTeBr and BiTeCl at 300 K and 5 K, for light polarized in the a-b planes. Despite different space groups, the optical properties of the two compounds are very similar. Both materials are doped semiconductors, with the absorption edge above the optical gap which is lower in BiTeBr (0.62 eV) than in BiTeCl (0.77 eV). The same Rashba splitting is observed in the two materials. A non-Drude free carrier contribution in the optical conductivity, as well as three Raman and two infrared phonon modes, are observed in each compound. There is a dramatic difference in the highest infrared phonon intensity for the two compounds, and a difference in the doping levels. Aspects of the strong electron-phonon interaction are identified. Several interband transitions are assigned, among them the low-lying absorption $β$ which has the same value 0.25 eV in both compounds, and is caused by the Rashba spin splitting of the conduction band. An additional weak transition is found in BiTeCl, caused by the lower crystal symmetry.

Interface superconductivity in LaAlO$_{3}$-SrTiO$_{3}$ heterostructures

The interface superconductivity in LaAlO$_{3}$-SrTiO$_{3}$ heterostructures reveals a non-monotonic behavior of the critical temperature as a function of the two-dimensional density of charge carriers. We develop a theoretical description of interface superconductivity in strongly polar heterostructures, based on the dielectric function formalism. The density dependence of the critical temperature is calculated accounting for all phonon branches including different types of optical (interface and half-space) and acoustic phonons. The LO- and acoustic-phonon-mediated electron-electron interaction is shown to be the dominating mechanism governing the superconducting phase transition in the heterostructure.

Infrared and Raman spectroscopy measurements of a transition in the crystal structure and a closing of the energy gap of BiTeI under pressure

BiTeI is a giant Rashba spin splitting system, in which a non-centro symmetric topological phase has recently been suggested to appear under high pressure. We investigated the optical properties of this compound, reflectivity and transmission, under pressures up to $15$ GPa. The gap feature in the optical conductivity vanishes above $p \sim 9$ GPa and does not reappear up to at least $15$ GPa. The plasma edge, associated with intrinsically doped charge carriers, is smeared out through a phase transition at $9$ GPa. Using high pressure Raman spectroscopy, we follow the vibrational modes of BiTeI, providing additional clear evidence that the transition at 9 GPa involves a change of crystal structure. This change of crystal structure possibly inhibits the high-pressure topological phase from occurring.

Infrared spectroscopy of hole doped ABA-stacked trilayer graphene

Using infrared spectroscopy, we investigate bottom gated ABA-stacked trilayer graphene subject to an additional environment-induced p-type doping. We find that the Slonczewski-Weiss-McClure tight-binding model and the Kubo formula reproduce the gate voltage-modulated reflectivity spectra very accurately. This allows us to determine the charge densities and the potentials of the π-band electrons on all graphene layers separately and to extract the interlayer permittivity due to higher energy bands.

Na2IrO3 as a spin-orbit-assisted antiferromagnetic insulator with a 340 meV gap

We study Na2IrO3 by ARPES, optics, and band structure calculations in the local-density approximation (LDA). The weak dispersion of the Ir 5d-t2g manifold highlights the importance of structural distortions and spin-orbit coupling (SO) in driving the system closer to a Mott transition. We detect an insulating gap Δ_gap = 340 meV which, at variance with a Slater-type description, is already open at 300 K and does not show significant temperature dependence even across T_N ~ 15 K. An LDA analysis with the inclusion of SO and Coulomb repulsion U reveals that, while the prodromes of an underlying insulating state are already found in LDA+SO, the correct gap magnitude can only be reproduced by LDA+SO+U, with U = 3 eV. This establishes Na2IrO3 as a novel type of Mott-like correlated insulator in which Coulomb and relativistic effects have to be treated on an equal footing.

Electron spin resonance and exchange paths in the orthorhombic dimer system Sr2VO4

We report on magnetization and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements of Sr$_{2}$VO$_4$ with orthorhombic symmetry. In this dimer system the $V^{4+}$ ions are in tetrahedral environment and are coupled by an antiferromagnetic intra-dimer exchange constant $J/k_B \approx$ 100 K to form a singlet ground state without any phase transitions between room temperature and 2 K. Based on an extended-Hückel-Tight-Binding analysis we identify the strongest exchange interaction to occur between two inequivalent vanadium sites via two intermediate oxygen ions. The ESR absorption spectra can be well described by a single Lorentzian line with an effective g-factor $g$ = 1.89. The temperature dependence of the ESR intensity is well described by a dimer model in agreement with the magnetization data. The temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth can be modeled by a superposition of a linear increase with temperature with a slope $α$ = 1.35 Oe/K and a thermally activated behavior with an activation energy $Δ/k_B$ = 1418 K, both of which point to spin-phonon coupling as the dominant relaxation mechanism in this compound.

Evidence for a Fermi liquid in the pseudogap phase of high-Tc cuprates

Cuprate high-T_c superconductors on the Mott-insulating side of "optimal doping" (with respect to the highest T_c's) exhibit enigmatic behavior in the non-superconducting state. Near optimal doping the transport and spectroscopic properties are unlike those of a Landau-Fermi liquid. For carrier concentrations below optimal doping a pseudogap removes quasi-particle spectral weight from parts of the Fermi surface, and causes a break-up of the Fermi surface into disconnected nodal and anti-nodal sectors. Here we show that the near-nodal excitations of underdoped cuprates obey Fermi liquid behavior. Our optical measurements reveal that the dynamical relaxation rate 1/tau(omega,T) collapses on a universal function proportional to (hbar omega)^2+(1.5 pi k_B T)^2. Hints at possible Fermi liquid behavior came from the recent discovery of quantum oscillations at low temperature and high magnetic field in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+d and YBa2Cu4O8, from the observed T^2-dependence of the DC (ω=0) resistivity for both overdoped and underdoped cuprates, and from the two-fluid analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance data. However, the direct spectroscopic determination of the energy dependence of the life-time of the excitations -provided by our measurements- has been elusive up to now. This observation defies the standard lore of non-Fermi liquid physics in high T_c cuprates on the underdoped side of the phase diagram.

Microscopic mechanisms for the Fermi-liquid behavior of Nb-doped strontium titanate

The relaxation rate in Nb-doped strontium titanate involving different scattering channels is investigated theoretically. It is demonstrated that the total relaxation rate in SrTiO_{3} is provided mainly by two mechanisms. The Baber electron-electron scattering with participation of both Coulomb and phonon-mediated electron-electron interactions provides the T^{2}-dependence of the relaxation rate. The scattering on the potential landscape caused by impurities is responsible for the residual relaxation rate at low temperatures. A good agreement with experiment is achieved accounting for all phonon branches in strontium titanate, both the optical and acoustic phonons. It is shown that the effective electron-electron interaction can be attractive in strontium titanate, and provides superconductivity at low temperatures and Fermi-liquid response in a wide range of temperatures. Thus our microscopic model supports the notion that superconductivity and Fermi-liquid properties of n-type SrTiO_{3} have a common origin.

Alternating spin-orbital order in tetragonal Sr2VO4

Considering spin-orbit coupling, the tetragonal crystal-field, and all relevant superexchange processes including quantum interference, we derive expressions for the energy levels of the vanadium ions in tetragonal Sr2VO4. The used parameters of the model Hamiltonian allow to describe well the excitation spectra observed in neutron scattering and optical experiments at low temperatures. The free energy exhibits a minimum which corresponds to a novel alternating spin-orbital order with strong thermal fluctuation of the orbital mixing parameter.
