Hybridization gap and anisotropic far-infrared optical conductivity of URu2Si2

We performed far-infrared optical spectroscopy measurements on the heavy fermion compound URu 2 Si 2 as a function of temperature. The light's electric-field was applied along the a-axis or the c-axis of the tetragonal structure. We show that in addition to a pronounced anisotropy, the optical conductivity exhibits for both axis a partial suppression of spectral weight around 12 meV and below 30 K. We attribute these observations to a change in the bandstructure below 30 K. However, since these changes have no noticeable impact on the entropy nor on the DC transport properties, we suggest that this is a crossover phenomenon rather than a thermodynamic phase transition.

Optical study of phonons and electronic excitations in tetragonal Sr$_2$VO$_4$

We report on the optical excitation spectra in Sr$_2$VO$_4$. The phonon modes are assigned and their evolution with temperature is discussed in the frame of the different phase transitions crossed upon cooling. Besides the expected infrared-active phonons we observe two additional excitations at about 290 cm$^{-1}$ and 840 cm$^{-1}$ which could correspond to electronic transitions of the V$^{4+}$ ions. Our experimental results are discussed in the context of recent experimental and theoretical studies of this material with a unique spin-orbital ground state.

Common Fermi-liquid origin of T-squared resistivity and superconductivity in n-type SrTiO3

A detailed analysis is given of the T^2 term in the resistivity observed in electron-doped SrTiO3. Novel bandstructure data are presented, which provide values for the bare mass, density of states, and plasma frequency of the quasiparticles as a function of doping. It is shown that these values are renormalized by approximately a factor 2 due to electron-phonon interaction. It is argued that the quasiparticles are in the anti-adiabatic limit with respect to electron-phonon interaction. The condition of anti-adiabatic coupling renders the interaction mediated through phonons effectively non-retarded. We apply Fermi-liquid theory developed in the 70's for the T^2 term in the resistivity of common metals, and combine this with expressions for Tc and with the Brinkman-Platzman-Rice (BPR) sum-rule to obtain Landau parameters of n-type SrTiO3. These parameters are comparable to those of liquid 3He, indicating interesting parallels between these Fermi-liquids despite the differences between the composite fermions from which they are formed.

Multi-component magneto-optical conductivity of multilayer graphene on SiC

Far-infrared diagonal and Hall conductivities of multilayer epitaxial graphene on the C-face of SiC were measured using magneto-optical absorption and Faraday rotation in magnetic fields up to 7 T and temperatures between 5 and 300 K. Multiple components are identified in the spectra, which include: (i) a quasi-classical cyclotron resonance (CR), originating from the highly doped graphene layer closest to SiC, (ii) transitions between low-index Landau levels (LLs), which stem from weakly doped layers and (iii) a broad optical absorption background. Electron and hole type LL transitions are optically distinguished and shown to coexist. An electron-hole asymmetry of the Fermi velocity of about 2% was found within one graphene layer, while the Fermi velocity varies by about 10% across the layers. The optical intensity of the LL transitions is several times smaller than what is theoretically expected for isolated graphene monolayers without electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions.

Spin resonance in EuTiO3 probed by time-domain GHz ellipsometry

We show an example of a purely magnetic spin resonance in EuTiO3 and the resulting new record high Faraday rotation of 590 deg/mm at 1.6 T for 1 cm wavelengths probed by a novel technique of magneto-optical GHz time-domain ellipsometry. From our transmission measurements of linear polarized light we map out the complex index of refraction in the GHz to THz range. We observe a strong resonant absorption by magnetic dipole transitions involving the Zeeman split S=7/2 magnetic energy levels of the Eu 2+ ions, which causes a very large dichroism for circular polarized radiation.

Infrared Conductivity of Elemental Bismuth under Pressure: Evidence for an Avoided Lifshitz-Type Semimetal-Semiconductor Transition

The application of pressure to elemental bismuth reduces its conduction-valence band overlap, and results in a semimetal-semiconductor (SMSC) transition around 25 kbar. This transition is nominally of the topological "Lifshitz" Fermi surface variety, but there are open questions about the role of interactions at low charge densities. Using a novel pressure cell with optical access, we have performed an extensive study of bismuth's infrared conductivity under pressure. In contrast to the expected pure band behavior we find signatures of enhanced interaction effects, including strongly coupled charge-plasmon (plasmaron) features and a plasma frequency that remains finite up to the transition. These effect are inconsistent with a pure Lifshitz bandlike transition. We postulate that interactions play a central role in driving the transition.

Measurement of magnetic excitations in the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Sr2CuO2Cl2 insulator using resonant x-ray scattering:Evidence for extended interactions

Using high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), we performed a momentum-resolved study of magnetic excitations in the model spin-1/2 2D antiferromagnetic insulator Sr_2CuCl_2O_2. We identify both a single-spin-wave feature and a multi-magnon continuum, and show that the X-ray polarization can be used to distinguish these two contributions in the cross-section. The spin-waves display a large (70 meV) dispersion between the zone-boundary points ($π$,0) and ($π$/2,$π$/2). Employing an extended $t$-$t'$-$t"$-$U$ one-band Hubbard model, we find significant electronic hopping beyond nearest-neighbor Cu ions. We conclude that sizeable extended magnetic interactions are present in \scoc{} and probably important in all undoped cuprates.

Optical conductivity and superconductivity in LaSb$_2$

We have measured the resistivity, optical conductivity, and magnetic susceptibility of LaSb$_2$ to search for clues as to the cause of the extraordinarily large linear magnetoresistance and to explore the properties of the superconducting state. We find no evidence in the optical conductivity for the formation of a charge density wave state above 20 K despite the highly layered crystal structure. In addition, only small changes to the optical reflectivity with magnetic field are observed indicating that the MR is due to scattering rate, not charge density, variations with field. Although a superconducting ground state was previously reported below a critical temperature of 0.4 K, we observe, at ambient pressure, a fragile superconducting transition with an onset at 2.5 K. In crystalline samples, we find a high degree of variability with a minority of samples displaying a full Meissner fraction below 0.2 K and fluctuations apparent up to 2.5 K. The application of pressure stabilizes the superconducting transition and reduces the anisotropy of the superconducting phase.

Spin Glass ground state in Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si

We report the discovery of a new spin glass ground state in the transition metal monosilicides with the B20 crystallographic structure. Magnetic, transport, neutron and muon investigation of the solid solution Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si have revealed a new dome in the phase diagram with evidence of antiferromagnetic interactions. For Mn rich compounds, a sharp decrease of the Curie temperature is observed upon Co doping and neutron elastic scattering shows that helimagnetic order of MnSi persists up to $x=0.05$ with a shortening of the helix period. For higher Co ($0.05<x<0.90$) concentrations, the Curie-Weiss temperature changes sign and the system enters a spin glass state upon cooling ($T_g=9$ K for $x_{Co}=0.50$), due to chemical disorder. In this doping range, a minimum appears in the resistivity, attributed to scattering of conduction electron by localized magnetic moments.

Evidence for core-hole-mediated inelastic x-ray scattering from metallic Fe$_{1.087}$Te

We present a detailed analysis of resonant inelastic scattering (RIXS) from Fe$_{1.087}$Te with unprecedented energy resolution. In contrast to the sharp peaks typically seen in insulating systems at the transition metal $L_3$ edge, we observe spectra which show different characteristic features. For low energy transfer, we experimentally observe theoretically predicted many-body effects of resonant Raman scattering from a non-interacting gas of fermions. Furthermore, we find that limitations to this many-body electron-only theory are realized at high Raman shift, where an exponential lineshape reveals an energy scale not present in these considerations. This regime, identified as emission, requires considerations of lattice degrees of freedom to understand the lineshape. We argue that both observations are intrinsic general features of many-body physics of metals.

Strong coupling to magnetic fluctuations in the charge dynamics of Fe-based superconductors

We present a comprehensive comparison of the infrared charge response of two systems, characteristic of classes of the 122 pnictide (SrFe2As2) and 11 chalcogenide (Fe_1.087Te) Fe compounds with magnetically-ordered ground states. In the 122 system, the magnetic phase shows a decreased plasma frequency and scattering, and associated appearance of strong mid-infrared features. The 11 system, with a different magnetic ordering pattern, also shows decreased scattering, but an increase in the plasma frequency, while no clear mid-infrared features appear below the ordering temperature. We suggest how this marked contrast can be understood in terms of the diverse magnetic ordering patterns of the ground state, and conclude that while the high temperature phases of these systems are similar, the magnetic ordering strongly affects the charge dynamical response. In addition, we propose an optical absorption mechanism which appears to be consistent with information gained from several different experiments.

Many-body large polaron optical conductivity in SrTi$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_3$

Recent experimental data on the optical conductivity of niobium doped SrTiO$_{3}$ are interpreted in terms of a gas of large polarons with effective coupling constant $α_{eff}\approx2$. The {theoretical approach takes into account} many-body effects, the electron-phonon interaction with multiple LO-phonon branches, and the degeneracy and the anisotropy of the Ti t$_{2g}$ conduction band. {Based on the Fröhlich interaction, the many-body large-polaron theory} provides an interpretation for the essential characteristics, except -- interestingly -- for the unexpectedly large intensity of a peak at $\sim130$ meV, of the observed optical conductivity spectra of SrTi$_{1-x}$Nb$_{x}$O$_{3}$ \textit{without} any adjustment of material parameters.

Strong energy-momentum dispersion of phonon-dressed carriers in the lightly doped band insulator SrTiO$_3$

Much progress has been made recently in the study of the effects of electron-phonon (el-ph) coupling in doped insulators using angle resolved photoemission (ARPES), yielding evidence for the dominant role of el-ph interactions in underdoped cuprates. As these studies have been limited to doped Mott insulators, the important question arises how this compares with doped band insulators where similar el-ph couplings should be at work. The archetypical case is the perovskite SrTiO$_3$ (STO), well known for its giant dielectric constant of 10000 at low temperature, exceeding that of La$_2$CuO$_4$ by a factor of 500. Based on this fact, it has been suggested that doped STO should be the archetypical bipolaron superconductor. Here we report an ARPES study from high-quality surfaces of lightly doped SrTiO$_3$. Comparing to lightly doped Mott insulators, we find the signatures of only moderate electron-phonon coupling: a dispersion anomaly associated with the low frequency optical phonon with a $λ'\sim0.3$ and an overall bandwidth renormalization suggesting an overall $λ'\sim0.7$ coming from the higher frequency phonons. Further, we find no clear signatures of the large pseudogap or small polaron phenomena. These findings demonstrate that a large dielectric constant itself is not a good indicator of el-ph coupling and highlight the unusually strong effects of the el-ph coupling in doped Mott insulators.

Effect of Fe excess on structural, magnetic and superconducting properties of single-crystalline Fe(1+x)Te(1-y)Se(y)

Single crystals of Fe(1+x)Te(1-y)Se(y) have been grown with a controlled Fe excess and Se doping, and the crystal structure has been refined for various compositions. The systematic investigation of magnetic and superconducting properties as a function of the structural parameters shows how the material can be driven into various ground states, depending on doping and the structural modifications. Our results prove that the occupation of the additional Fe site, Fe2, enhances the spin localization. By reducing the excess Fe, the antiferromagnetic ordering is weakened, and the superconducting ground state is favored. We have found that both Fe excess and Se doping in synergy determine the properties of the material and an improved 3-dimensional phase diagram is proposed.

Optical properties of BaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$

We present detailed temperature dependent optical data on BaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_{x}$As$_{2}$ (BCFA), with x = 0.14, between 4 meV and 6.5 eV. We analyze our spectra to determine the main optical parameters and show that in this material the interband conductivity already starts around 10 meV. We determine the superfluid density to be 2.2 10^{7}$ cm^{-2}, which places optimally doped BFCA close to the Uemura line. Our experimental data shows clear signs of a superconducting gap with 2$Δ_{1}$ = 6.2 $\pm$ 0.8 meV. In addition we show that the optical spectra are consistent with the presence of an additional band of strongly scattered carriers with a larger gap, 2$Δ_{2}$ = 14 $\pm$ 2 meV.

Gate tunable charged-phonon effect in bilayer graphene

We observe a giant increase of the infrared intensity and a softening of the in-plane antisymmetric phonon mode Eu (~0.2 eV) in bilayer graphene as a function of the gate-induced doping. The phonon peak has a pronounced Fano-like asymmetry. We suggest that the intensity growth and the softening originate from the coupling of the phonon mode to the narrow electronic transition between parallel bands of the same character, while the asymmetry is due to the interaction with the continuum of transitions between the lowest hole and electron bands. The growth of the peak is a manifestation of the "charged-phonon" effect observed previously in organic chain conductors and doped fullerenes, which can now be tuned with the gate voltage.

Determination of the gate-tunable bandgap and tight-binding parameters in bilayer graphene using infrared spectroscopy

We present a compelling evidence for the opening of a bandgap in exfoliated bottom-gated bilayer graphene by fitting the gate-voltage modulated infrared reflectivity spectra in a large range of doping levels with a tight-binding model and the Kubo formula. A close quantitative agreement between the experimental and calculated spectra is achieved, allowing us to determine self-consistently the full set of Slonczewski-Weiss-McClure tight-binding parameters together with the gate-voltage dependent bandgap. The doping dependence of the bandgap shows a good agreement with the existing calculations that take the effects of self-screening into account. We also identify certain mismatches between the tight-binding model and the data, which can be related to electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions.

Evidence for strongly coupled charge-density-wave ordering in three-dimensional RE5Ir4Si10 compounds by optical measurements

We report optical spectra of Lu$_5$Ir$_4$Si$_{10}$ and Er$_5$Ir$_4$Si$_{10}$, exhibiting the phenomenon of coexisting superconductivity or antiferromagnetism and charge density wave (CDW) order. We measure the maximum value of the charge density wave gap present on part of the Fermi surface of Lu5Ir4Si10, corresponding to a ratio 2Δ/k_B T_CDW \approx 10, well above the value in the limit of weak electron-phonon coupling. Strong electron-phonon coupling was confirmed by analyzing the optical conductivity with the Holstein model describing the electron-phonon interactions, indicating the coupling to phonons centered at 30 meV, with a coupling constant λ\approx 2.6. Finally we provide evidence that approximately 16 % of the Fermi surface of Lu5Ir4Si10 becomes gapped in the CDW state.
