Hall response in interacting bosonic and fermionic ladders

We use bosonization, retaining band curvature terms, to analyze the Hall response of interacting bosonic and fermionic two-leg ladders threaded by a flux. We derive an explicit expression of the Hall imbalance in a perturbative expansion in the band curvature, retaining fully the interactions. We show that the flux dependence of the Hall imbalance allows to distinguish the two phases (Meissner and Vortex) that are present for a bosonic ladder. For small magnetic field we relate the Hall resistance, both for bosonic and fermionic ladders, to the density dependence of the charge sitffness of the system in absence of flux. Our expression unveil a universal interaction-independent behavior in the Galilean invariant case.

Formation and fragmentation of quantum droplets in a quasi-one dimensional dipolar Bose gas

We theoretically investigate the droplets formation in a tightly trapped one-dimensional dipolar gas of bosonic atoms. When the strength of the dipolar interaction becomes sufficiently attractive compared to the contact one, we show how a solitonic-like density profile evolves into a liquid-like droplet on increasing the number of particles in the trap. The incipient gas-liquid transition is also signalled by a steep increase of the breathing mode and a change in sign of the chemical potential. Upon a sudden release of the trap, varying the number of trapped atoms and the scattering length, the numerical solution of a time-dependent generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation shows either an evaporation of the cloud, the formation of a single self-bound droplet or a fragmentation in multiple droplets. These results can be probed with lanthanides atoms and help in characterizing the effect of the dipolar interaction in a quasi-one-dimensional geometry.

Polarization angle dependence of the breathing modes in confined one-dimensional dipolar bosons

Probing the radial collective oscillation of a trapped quantum system is an accurate experimental tool to investigate interactions and dimensionality effects. We consider a fully polarized quasi-one dimensional dipolar quantum gas of bosonic dysprosium atoms in a parabolic trap at zero temperature. We model the dipolar gas with an effective quasi-one dimensional Hamiltonian in the single-mode approximation, and derive the equation of state using a variational approximation based on the Lieb-Liniger gas Bethe Ansatz wavefunction or perturbation theory. We calculate the breathing mode frequencies while varying polarization angles by a sum-rule approach, and find them in good agreement with recent experimental findings.

Roadmap on Atomtronics: State of the art and perspective

Atomtronics deals with matter-wave circuits of ultra-cold atoms manipulated through magnetic or laser-generated guides with different shapes and intensities. In this way, new types of quantum networks can be constructed, in which coherent fluids are controlled with the know-how developed in the atomic and molecular physics community. In particular, quantum devices with enhanced precision, control and flexibility of their operating conditions can be accessed. Concomitantly, new quantum simulators and emulators harnessing on the coherent current flows can also be developed. Here, we survey the landscape of atomtronics-enabled quantum technology and draw a roadmap for the field in the near future. We review some of the latest progresses achieved in matter-wave circuits design and atom-chips. Atomtronic networks are deployed as promising platforms for probing many-body physics with a new angle and a new twist. The latter can be done both at the level of equilibrium and non-equilibrium situations. Numerous relevant problems in mesoscopic physics, like persistent currents and quantum transport in circuits of fermionic or bosonic atoms, are studied through a new lens. We summarize some of the atomtronics quantum devices and sensors. Finally, we discuss alkali-earth and Rydberg atoms as potential platforms for the realization of atomtronic circuits with special features.

Variational Bethe Ansatz approach for dipolar one-dimensional bosons

We propose a variational approximation to the ground state energy of a one-dimensional gas of interacting bosons on the continuum based on the Bethe Ansatz ground state wavefunction of the Lieb-Liniger model. We apply our variational approximation to a gas of dipolar bosons in the single mode approximation and obtain its ground state energy per unit length. This allows for the calculation of the Tomonaga-Luttinger exponent as a function of density and the determination of the structure factor at small momenta. Moreover, in the case of attractive dipolar interaction, an instability is predicted at a critical density, which could be accessed in lanthanide atoms.

Quantum phase transitions of a two-leg bosonic ladder in an artificial gauge field

We consider a two leg bosonic ladder in a $U(1)$ gauge field with both interleg hopping and interleg repulsion. As a function of the flux, the interleg interaction converts the commensurate-incommensurate transition from the Meissner to a Vortex phase, into an Ising-type of transition towards a density wave phase. A disorder point is also found after which the correlation functions develop a damped sinusoid behavior signaling a melting of the vortex phase. We discuss the differences on the phase diagram for attractive and repulsive interleg interaction. In particular, we show how repulsion favors the Meissner phase at low-flux and a phase with a second incommensuration in the correlation functions for intermediate flux, leading to a richer phase diagram than in the case of interleg attraction. The effect of the temperature on the chiral current is also discussed.

Revealing topological Dirac fermions at the surface of strained HgTe thin films via Quantum Hall transport spectroscopy

We demonstrate evidences of electronic transport via topological Dirac surface states in a thin film of strained HgTe. At high perpendicular magnetic fields, we show that the electron transport reaches the quantum Hall regime with vanishing resistance. Furthermore, quantum Hall transport spectroscopy reveals energy splittings of relativistic Landau levels specific to coupled Dirac surface states. This study provides new insights in the quantum Hall effect of topological insulator (TI) slabs, in the cross-over regime between two- and three-dimensional TIs, and in the relevance of thin TI films to explore novel circuit functionalities in spintronics and quantum nanoelectronics.

Vortex lattice melting in a boson-ladder in artificial gauge field

We consider a two-leg boson ladder in an artificial U(1) gauge field and show that, in the presence of interleg attractive interaction, the flux induced Vortex state can be melted by dislocations. For increasing flux, instead of the Meissner to Vortex transition in the commensurate-incommensurate universality class, first an Ising transition from the Meissner state to a charge density wave takes place, then, at higher flux, the melted Vortex phase is established via a disorder point where incommensuration develops in the rung current correlation function and in momentum distribution. Finally, the quasi-long range ordered Vortex phase is recovered for sufficiently small interaction. Our predictions for the observables, such as the spin current and the static structure factor, could be tested in current experiments with cold atoms in bosonic ladders.

Diffusion of Dirac fermions across a topological merging transition in two dimensions

A continuous deformation of a Hamiltonian possessing at low energy two Dirac points of opposite chiralities can lead to a gap opening by merging of the two Dirac points. In two dimensions, the critical Hamiltonian possesses a semi-Dirac spectrum: linear in one direction but quadratic in the other. We study the transport properties across such a transition, from a Dirac semi-metal through a semi-Dirac phase towards a gapped phase. Using both a Boltzmann approach and a diagrammatic Kubo approach, we describe the conductivity tensor within the diffusive regime. In particular, we show that both the anisotropy of the Fermi surface and the Dirac nature of the eigenstates combine to give rise to anisotropic transport times, manifesting themselves through an unusual matrix self-energy.

Giant magnetic-field dependence of the coupling between spin Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids in BaCo2V2O8

We use nuclear magnetic resonance to map the complete low-temperature phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic Ising-like spin-chain system BaCo2V2O8 as a function of the magnetic field applied along the chains. In contrast to the predicted crossover from the longitudinal incommensurate phase to the transverse antiferromagnetic phase, we find a sequence of three magnetically ordered phases between the critical fields 3.8 T and 22.8 T. Their origin is traced to the giant magnetic-field dependence of the total effective coupling between spin chains, extracted to vary by a factor of 24. We explain this novel phenomenon as emerging from the combination of nontrivially coupled spin chains and incommensurate spin fluctuations in the chains treated as Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids.

Bosonization and entanglement spectrum for one-dimensional polar bosons on disordered lattices

The extended Bose-Hubbard model subjected to a disordered potential is predicted to display a rich phase diagram. In the case of uniform random disorder one finds two insulating quantum phases -- the Mott-insulator and the Haldane insulator -- in addition to a superfluid and a Bose glass phase. In the case of a quasiperiodic potential further phases are found, eg the incommensurate density wave, adiabatically connected to the Haldane insulator. For the case of weak random disorder we determine the phase boundaries using a perturbative bosonization approach. We then calculate the entanglement spectrum for both types of disorder, showing that it provides a good indication of the various phases.

Response functions in multicomponent Luttinger liquids

We derive an analytic expression for the zero temperature Fourier transform of the density-density correlation function of a multicomponent Luttinger liquid with different velocities. By employing Schwinger identity and a generalized Feynman identity exact integral expressions are derived, and approximate analytical forms are given for frequencies close to each component singularity. We find power-like singularities and compute the corresponding exponents. Numerical results are shown for the case of three components.

Spin-chain system as a tunable simulator of frustrated planar magnetism

At low temperatures, weakly coupled spin chains develop a magnetic order that reflects the character of gapless spin fluctuations along the chains. Using nuclear magnetic resonance, we identify and characterize two ordered states in the gapless region of the antiferromagnetic, Ising-like spin-chain system BaCo2V2O8, both arising from the incommensurate fluctuations along the chains. They correspond to the columnar and ferromagnetic ordered states of the frustrated J1-J2 spin model on a square lattice, where the spins are encoded in original spin chains. As a result of field-dependent incommensurate fluctuations and frustrated interchain interaction, J1 can be tuned continuously with the magnetic field, and its value with respect to a fixed J2 selects the ordered state. Spin-chain systems can thus be used as tunable simulators of frustrated planar magnetism.

Light scattering in inhomogeneous Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids

We derive the dynamical structure factor for an inhomogeneous Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid as can be formed in a confined strongly interacting one-dimensional gas. In view of current experimental progress in the field, we provide a simple analytic expression for the light-scattering cross section, requiring only the knowledge of the density dependence of the ground-state energy, as they can be extracted e.g. from exact or Quantum Monte Carlo techniques, and a Thomas-Fermi description. We apply the result to the case of one-dimensional quantum bosonic gases with dipolar interaction in a harmonic trap, using an energy functional deduced from Quantum Monte Carlo computations. We find an universal scaling behavior peculiar of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, a signature that can be eventually probed by Bragg spectroscopy in experimental realizations of such systems.

One dimensional Bosons: From Condensed Matter Systems to Ultracold Gases

We review the physics of one-dimensional interacting bosonic systems. Beginning with results from exactly solvable models and computational approaches, we introduce the concept of bosonic Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquids relevant for one-dimension, and compare it with Bose-Einstein condensates existing in dimensions higher than one. We discuss the effects of various perturbations on the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid state as well as extensions to multicomponent and out of equilibrium situations. Finally, we review the experimental systems that can be described in terms of models of interacting bosons in one dimension.

Probing the helical edge states of a topological insulator by Cooper-pair injection

We consider the proximity effect between a singlet s-wave superconductor and the edge of a Quantum Spin Hall (QSH) topological insulator. We establish that Andreev reflection at a QSH edge state/superconductor interface is perfect while nonlocal Andreev processes through the superconductor are totally suppressed. We compute the corresponding conductance and noise.

Competition of superfluidity and density waves in one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures

We study a mixture of one-dimensional bosons and spinless fermions at incommensurate filling using phenomenological bosonization and Green's functions techniques. We derive the relation between the parameters of the microscopic Hamiltonian and macroscopic observables. Galilean invariance results in extra constraints for the current current interactions. We obtain the exact exponents for the various response functions, and show that superfluid fluctuations are enhanced by the effective boson-fermion density-density interaction and suppressed by the effective boson-fermion current-current interaction. In the case of a bosonized model with purely density-density interaction, when the effective boson-fermion density-density interaction is weak enough, the superfluid exponent of the bosons has a non-monotonous variation with the ratio of the fermion velocity to the boson velocity. By contrast, density-wave exponent and the exponent for fermionic superfluidity are monotonous functions of the velocity ratio.

Field-Controlled Magnetic Order in the Quantum Spin-Ladder System (Hpip)2CuBr4

Neutron diffraction is used to investigate the field-induced, antiferromagnetically ordered state in the two-leg spin-ladder material (Hpip)2CuBr4. This "classical" phase, a consequence of weak interladder coupling, is nevertheless highly unconventional: its properties are influenced strongly by the spin Luttinger-liquid state of the ladder subunits. We determine directly the order parameter (transverse magnetization), the ordering temperature, the spin structure, and the critical exponents around the transition. We introduce a minimal, microscopic model for the interladder coupling and calculate the quantum fluctuation corrections to the mean-field interaction.
