Convergence of a stochastic collocation finite volume method for the compressible Navier-Stokes system

We propose a stochastic collocation method based on the piecewise constant interpolation on the probability space combined with a finite volume method to solve the compressible Navier-Stokes system at the nodal points. We show convergence of numerical solutions to a statistical solution of the Navier-Stokes system on condition that the numerical solutions are bounded in probability. The analysis uses the stochastic compactness method based on the Skorokhod/Jakubowski representation theorem and the criterion of convergence in probability due to Gyöngy and Krylov.

The Rayleigh Benard problem for compressible fluid flows

We consider the physically relevant fully compressible setting of the Rayleigh Benard problem of a fluid confined between two parallel plates, heated from the bottom, and subjected to the gravitational force. Under suitable restrictions imposed on the constitutive relations we show that this open system is dissipative in the sense of Levinson, meaning there exists a bounded absorbing set for any global-in-time weak solution. In addition, global-in-time trajectories are asymptotically compact in suitable topologies and the system possesses a global compact trajectory attractor A. The standard technique of Krylov and Bogolyubov then yields the existence of an invariant measure - a stationary statistical solution sitting on A. In addition, the Birkhoff - Khinchin ergodic theorem provides convergence of ergodic averages of solutions belonging to A a.s. with respect to the invariant measure.

Euler system with a polytropic equation of state as a vanishing viscosity limit

We consider the Euler system of gas dynamics endowed with the incomplete equation of state relating the internal energy to the mass density and the pressure. We show that any sufficiently smooth solution can be recovered as a vanishing viscosity - heat conductivity limit of the Navier--Stokes--Fourier system with a properly defined temperature. The result is unconditional in the case of the Navier type (slip) boundary conditions and extends to the no-slip condition for the velocity under some extra hypotheses of Kato's type concerning the behavior of the fluid in the boundary layer.

A model of a non-isothermal two phase flow of compressible fluids

We introduce a simple model of the time evolution of a binary mixture of compressible fluids including the thermal effects. Despite its apparent simplicity, the model is thermodynamically consistent admitting an entropy balance equation. We introduce a suitable weak formulation of the problem based on a combination of the entropy inequality with the total energy conservation principle. Finally, we show compactness of any bounded family of weak solutions and establish a global existence result.

Asymptotic stability of solutions to the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system driven by inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions

We consider global in time solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system describing the motion of a general compressible, viscous and heat conducting fluid far from equilibirum. Using a new concept of weak solution suitable to accommodate the inhomogeneous Dirichlet time dependent data we find sufficient conditions for the global in time weak solutions to be ultimately bounded.

Two phase flows of compressible viscous fluids

We introduce a new concept of dissipative varifold solution to models of two phase compressible viscous fluids. In contrast with the existing approach based on the Young measure description, the new formulation is variational combining the energy and momentum balance in a single inequality. We show the existence of dissipative varifold solutions for a large class of general viscous fluids with non--linear dependence of the viscous stress on the symmetric velocity gradient.

Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with Dirichlet boundary conditions

We consider the Navier--Stokes--Fourier system describing the motion of a compressible, viscous, and heat conducting fluid in a bounded domain with general non-homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions for the velocity and the absolute temperature, with the associated boundary conditions for the density on the inflow part. We introduce a new concept of weak solution based on the satisfaction of the entropy inequality together with a balance law for the ballistic energy. We show the weak-strong uniqueness principle as well as the existence of global-in-time solutions.

Ergodic theory for energetically open compressible fluid flows

The ergodic hypothesis is examined for energetically open fluid systems represented by the barotropic Navier--Stokes equations with general inflow/outflow boundary conditions. We show that any globally bounded trajectory generates a stationary statistical solution, which is interpreted as a stochastic process with continuous trajectories supported by the family of weak solutions of the problem. The abstract Birkhoff--Khinchin theorem is applied to obtain convergence (in expectation and a.s.) of ergodic averages for any bounded Borel measurable function of state variables associated to any stationary solution. Finally, we show that validity of the ergodic hypothesis is determined by the behavior of entire solutions (i.e. a solution defined for any $t\in R$). In particular, the ergodic averages converge for any trajectory provided its $ω-$limit set in the trajectory space supports a unique (in law) stationary solution.

An anelastic approximation arising in astrophysics

We identify the asymptotic limit of the compressible non-isentropic Navier-Stokes system in the regime of low Mach, low Froude and high Reynolds number. The system is driven by a long range gravitational potential. We show convergence to an anelastic system for ill-prepared initial data. The proof is based on frequency localized Strichartz estimates for the acoustic equation based on the recent work of Metcalfe and Tataru.

Well/ill posedness for the Euler-Korteweg-Poisson system and related problems

We consider a general Euler-Korteweg-Poisson system in $R^3$, supplemented with the space periodic boundary conditions, where the quantum hydrodynamics equations and the classical fluid dynamics equations with capillarity are recovered as particular examples. We show that the system admits infinitely many global-in-time weak solutions for any sufficiently smooth initial data including the case of a vanishing initial density - the vacuum zones. Moreover, there is a vast family of initial data, for which the Cauchy problem possesses infinitely many dissipative weak solutions, i.e. the weak solutions satisfying the energy inequality. Finally, we establish the weak-strong uniqueness property in a class of solutions without vacuum.

Numerical analysis of a model of two phase compressible fluid flow

We consider a model of a binary mixture of two immiscible compressible fluids. We propose a numerical scheme and discuss its basic properties: Stability, consistency, convergence. The convergence is established via the method of generalized weak solutions combined with the weak-strong uniqueness principle.

Stationary solutions in thermodynamics of stochastically forced fluids

We study the full Navier--Stokes--Fourier system governing the motion of a general viscous, heat-conducting, and compressible fluid subject to stochastic perturbation. The system is supplemented with non-homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions for the temperature and hence energetically open. We show that, in contrast with the energetically closed system, there exists a stationary solution. Our approach is based on new global-in-time estimates which rely on the non-homogeneous boundary conditions combined with estimates for the pressure.

Randomness in compressible fluid flows past an obstacle

We consider a statistical limit of solutions to the compressible Navier--Stokes system in the high Reynolds number regime in a domain exterior to a rigid body. We investigate to what extent this highly turbulent regime can be modeled by an external stochastic perturbation, as suggested in the related physics literature. To this end, we interpret the statistical limit as a stochastic process on the associated trajectory space. We suppose that the limit process is statistically equivalent to a solution of the stochastic compressible Euler system. Then, necessarily, (i) the stochastic forcing is not active -- the limit is a statistical solution of the deterministic Euler system; (ii) the solutions S-converge to the limit; (iii) if, in addition, the expected value of the limit process solves the Euler system, then the limit is deterministic and the convergence is strong in the $L^p$-sense. These results strongly indicate that a stochastic forcing may not be a suitable model for turbulent randomness in compressible fluid flows.

On the long time behavior of compressible fluid flows excited by random forcing

We are concerned with the long time behavior of the stochastic Navier--Stokes system for compressible fluids in dimension two and three. In this setting, the part of the phase space occupied by the solution depends sensitively on the choice of the initial state. Our main results are threefold. (i) The kinetic energy of a solution is universally and asymptotically bounded, independent of the initial datum. (ii) Time shifts of a solution with initially controlled energy are asymptotically compact and generate an entire solution defined for all $t\in R$. (iii) Every solution with initially controlled energy generates a stationary solution and even an ergodic stationary solution on the closure of the convex hull of its $ω$--limit set.

Some remarks on steady solutions to the Euler system in $\mathbb{R}^d$

We show that the Euler system of gas dynamics in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d=2,3$, with positive far field density and arbitrary far field entropy, admits infinitely many steady solutions with compactly supported velocity. The same proof yields a similar result for the incompressible Euler system with variable density. In particular, these are examples of global in time smooth (non-trivial) solutions for the corresponding time-dependent systems.

Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with general boundary conditions

We consider the Navier--Stokes--Fourier system in a bounded domain $Ω\subset R^d$, $d=2,3$, with physically realistic in/out flow boundary conditions. We develop a new concept of weak solutions satisfying a general form of relative energy inequality. The weak solutions exist globally in time for any finite energy initial data and comply with the weak--strong uniqueness principle.
