Globally bounded trajectories for the barotropic Navier-Stokes system with general boundary conditions

We consider the barotropic Navier--Stokes system describing the motion of a viscous compressible fluid interacting with the outer world through general in/out flux boundary conditions. We consider a hard--sphere type pressure EOS and show that all trajectories eventually enter a bounded absorbing set. In particular, the associated omega-limit sets are compact and support a stationary statistical solution.

On the density of wild initial data for the compressible Euler system

We consider a class of wild initial data to the compressible Euler system that give rise to infinitely many admissible weak solutions via the method of convex integration. We identify the closure of this class in the natural $L^1$-topology and show that its complement is rather large, specifically it is an open dense set.

(S)-convergence and approximation of oscillatory solutions in fluid dynamics

We propose a new concept of (S)-convergence applicable to numerical methods as well as other consistent approximations of the Euler system in gas dynamics. (S)-convergence, based on averaging in the spirit of Strong Law of Large Numbers, reflects the asymptotic properties of a given approximate sequence better than the standard description via Young measures. Similarity with the tools of ergodic theory is discussed.

Statistical solutions to the barotropic Navier-Stokes system

We introduce a new concept of statistical solution in the framework of weak solutions to the barotropic Navier--Stokes system with inhomogeneous boundary conditions. Statistical solution is a family $\{ M_t \}_{t \geq 0}$ of Markov operators on the set of probability measures $\mathfrak{P}[\mathcal{D}]$ on the data space $\mathcal{D}$ containing the initial data $[\varrho_0, \mathbf{m}_0]$ and the boundary data $\mathbf{d}_B$. (1) $\{ M_t \}_{t \geq 0}$ possesses a.a. semigroup property, $ M_{t + s}(ν) = M_t \circ M_s(ν)$ for any $t \geq 0$, a.a. $s \geq 0$, and any $ν\in \mathfrak{P}[\mathcal{D}]$. (2) $\{ M_t \}_{t \geq 0}$ is deterministic when restricted to deterministic data, specifically $ M_t(δ_{[\varrho_0, \mathbf{m}_0, \mathbf{d}_B]}) = δ_{[\varrho(t, \cdot), \mathbf{m}(t, \cdot), \mathbf{d}_B]}, $ where $[\varrho, \mathbf{m}]$ is a finite energy weak solution of the Navier--Stokes system corresponding to the data $[\varrho_0, \mathbf{m}_0, \mathbf{d}_B] \in \mathcal{D}$. (3) $M_t: \mathfrak{P}[\mathcal{D}] \to \mathfrak{P}[\mathcal{D}]$ is continuous in a suitable Bregman--Wasserstein metric at measures supported by the data giving rise to regular solutions.

On oscillatory solutions to the complete Euler system

The Euler system in fluid dynamics is a model of a compressible inviscid fluid incorporating the three basic physical principles: Conservation of mass, momentum, and energy. We show that the Cauchy problem is basically ill-posed for the $L^\infty$-initial data in the class of weak entropy solutions. As a consequence, there are infinitely many measure-valued solutions for a vast set of initial data. Finally, using the concept of relative energy, we discuss a singular limit problem for the measure-valued solutions, where the Mach and Froude number are proportional to a small parameter.

On convergence of approximate solutions to the compressible Euler system

We consider a sequence of approximate solutions to the compressible Euler system admitting uniform energy bounds and/or satisfying the relevant field equations modulo an error vanishing in the asymptotic limit. We show that such a sequence either (i) converges strongly in the energy norm, or (ii) the limit is not a weak solution of the associated Euler system. This is in sharp contrast to the incompressible case, where (oscillatory) approximate solutions may converge weakly to solutions of the Euler system. Our approach leans on identifying a system of differential equations satisfied by the associated turbulent defect measure and showing that it only has a trivial solution.

Generalized solutions to models of compressible viscous fluids

We propose a new approach to models of general compressible viscous fluids based on the concept of dissipative solutions. These are weak solutions satisfying the underlying equations modulo a defect measure. A dissipative solution coincides with the strong solution as long as the latter exists (weak-strong uniqueness) and they solve the problem in the classical sense as soon as they are smooth (compatibility). We consider general models of compressible viscous fluids with non-linear viscosity tensor and non-homogeneous boundary conditions, for which the problem of existence of global-in-time weak/strong solutions is largely open.

On the motion of rigid bodies in a perfect fluid

We consider the problem of motion of several rigid bodies immersed in a perfect compressible fluid. Using the method of convex integration we establish the existence of infinitely many weak solutions with {\it a priori} prescribed motion of rigid bodies. In particular, the dynamics is completely \emph{time--reversible} at the motion of rigid bodies although the solutions comply with the standard entropy admissibility criterion.

Computing oscillatory solutions of the Euler system via $\mathcal{K}$-convergence

We develop a method to compute effectively the Young measures associated to sequences of numerical solutions of the compressible Euler system. Our approach is based on the concept of $\mathcal{K}$-convergence adapted to sequences of parametrized measures. The convergence is strong in space and time (a.e.~pointwise or in certain $L^q$ spaces) whereas the measures converge narrowly or in the Wasserstein distance to the corresponding limit.

Generalized solutions to models of inviscid fluids

We discuss several approaches to generalized solutions of problems describing the motion of inviscid fluids. We propose a new concept of dissipative solution to the compressible Euler system based on a careful analysis of possible oscillations and/or concentrations in the associated generating sequence. Unlike the conventional measure-valued solutions or rather their expected values, the dissipative solutions comply with a natural compatibility condition - they are classical solutions as long as they enjoy certain degree of smoothness.

Solution semiflow to the isentropic Euler system

It is nowadays well understood that the multidimensional isentropic Euler system is desperately ill--posed. Even certain smooth initial data give rise to infinitely many solutions and all available selection criteria fail to ensure both global existence and uniqueness. We propose a different approach to well--posedness of this system based on ideas from the theory of Markov semigroups: we show the existence of a Borel measurable solution semiflow. To this end, we introduce a notion of dissipative solution which is understood as time dependent trajectories of the basic state variables - the mass density, the linear momentum, and the energy - in a suitable phase space. The underlying system of PDEs is satisfied in a generalized sense. The solution semiflow enjoys the standard semigroup property and the solutions coincide with the strong solutions as long as the latter exist. Moreover, they minimize the energy (maximize the energy dissipation) among all dissipative solutions.

On strong continuity of weak solutions to the compressible Euler system

Let $\mathcal{S} = \{ τ_n \}_{n=1}^\infty \subset (0,T)$ be an arbitrary countable (dense) set. We show that for any given initial density and momentum, the compressible Euler system admits (infinitely many) admissible weak solutions that are not strongly continuous at each $τ_n$, $n=1,2,\dots$. The proof is based on a refined version of the oscillatory lemma of De Lellis and Sz\' ekelyhidi with coefficients that may be discontinuous on a set of zero Lebesgue measure.

Convergence of a finite volume scheme for the compressible Navier--Stokes system

We study convergence of a finite volume scheme for the compressible (barotropic) Navier--Stokes system. First we prove the energy stability and consistency of the scheme and show that the numerical solutions generate a dissipative measure-valued solution of the system. Then by the dissipative measure-valued-strong uniqueness principle, we conclude the convergence of the numerical solution to the strong solution as long as the latter exists. Numerical experiments for standard benchmark tests support our theoretical results.

Ill posedness for the full Euler system driven by multiplicative white noise

We consider the Euler system describing the motion of a compressible fluid driven by a multiplicative white noise. We identify a large class of initial data for which the problem is ill posed - there exist infinitely many global in time weak solutions. The solutions are adapted to the noise and satisfy the entropy admissibility criterion.

Dissipative solutions and semiflow selection for the complete Euler system

To circumvent the ill-posedness issues present in various models of continuum fluid mechanics, we present a dynamical systems approach aiming at selection of physically relevant solutions. Even under the presence of infinitely many solutions to the full Euler system describing the motion of a compressible inviscid fluid, our approach permits to select a system of solutions (one trajectory for every initial condition) satisfying the classical semiflow property. Moreover, the selection respects the well accepted admissibility criteria for physical solutions, namely, maximization of the entropy production rate and the weak--strong uniqueness principle. Consequently, strong solutions are always selected whenever they exist and stationary states are stable and included in the selection as well. To this end, we introduce a notion of dissipative solution, which is given by a triple of density, momentum and total entropy defined as expectations of a suitable measure--valued solution.

$\mathcal{K}-$convergence as a new tool in numerical analysis

We adapt the concept of $\mathcal{K}-$convergence of Young measures to the sequences of approximate solutions resulting from numerical schemes. We obtain new results on pointwise convergence of numerical solutions in the case when solutions of the limit continuous problem possess minimal regularity. We apply the abstract theory to a finite volume method for the isentropic Euler system describing the motion of a compressible inviscid fluid. The result can be seen as a nonlinear version of the fundamental Lax equivalence theorem.
