On uniqueness of dissipative solutions to the isentropic Euler system

The dissipative solutions can be seen as a convenient generalization of the concept of weak solution to the isentropic Euler system. They can be seen as expectations of the Young measures associated to a suitable measure--valued solution of the problem. We show that dissipative solutions coincide with weak solutions starting from the same initial data on condition that: {\bf (i)} the weak solution enjoys certain Besov regularity; {\bf (ii)} the symmetric velocity gradient of the weak solution satisfies a one--sided Lipschitz bound.

On the convergence of a finite volume method for the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system

We study convergence of a finite volume scheme for the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system describing the motion of compressible viscous and heat conducting fluids. The numerical flux uses upwinding with an additional numerical diffusion of order $\mathcal{O} (h^{ \varepsilon+1})$, $0<\varepsilon<1$. The approximate solutions are piecewise constant functions with respect to the underlying mesh. We show that any uniformly bounded sequence of numerical solutions converges unconditionally to the solution of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system. In particular, the existence of the solution to the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system is not a priori assumed.

On global-in-time weak solutions to the magnetohydrodynamic system of compressible inviscid fluids

We consider the motion of an inviscid compressible fluid under the mutual interactions with magnetic field. We show that the initial value problem is ill--posed in the class of weak solutions for a large class of physically admissible data. We also consider the same problem for inviscid heat--conductive fluid and show the same result under certain restrictions imposed on the magnetic field. The main tool is the method of convex integration adapted to the Euler system with `variable coefficients'.

On a class of compressible viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress--diffusion

We develop a mathematical theory for a class of compressible viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress diffusion. Our approach is based on the concepts used in the nowadays standard theory of compressible Newtonian fluids as renormalization, effective viscous flux identity, compensated compactness. The presence of the extra stress, however, requires substantial modification of these techniques, in particular, a new version of the effective viscous flux identity is derived. With help of these tools, we show the existence of global--in--time weak solutions for any finite energy initial data.

Markov selection for the stochastic compressible Navier--Stokes system

We analyze the Markov property of solutions to the compressible Navier--Stokes system perturbed by a general multiplicative stochastic forcing. We show the existence of an almost sure Markov selection to the associated martingale problem. Our proof is based on the abstract framework introduced in [F. Flandoli, M. Romito: Markov selections for the 3D stochastic Navier--Stokes equations. Probab. Theory Relat. Fields 140, 407--458. (2008)]. A major difficulty arises from the fact, different from the incompressible case, that the velocity field is not continuous in time. In addition, it cannot be recovered from the variables whose time evolution is described by the Navier--Stokes system, namely, the density and the momentum. We overcome this issue by introducing an auxiliary variable into the Markov selection procedure.

On a singular limit for stratified compressible fluids

We consider a singular limit problem for the complete compressible Euler system in the low Mach and strong stratification regime. We identify the limit problem - the anelastic Euler system - in the case of well prepared initial data. The result holds in the large class of the dissipative measure-valued solutions of the primitive system. Applications are discussed to the driven shallow water equations.

A finite volume scheme for the Euler system inspired by the two velocities approach

We propose a new finite volume scheme for the Euler system of gas dynamics motivated by the model proposed by H. Brenner. Numerical viscosity imposed through upwinding acts on the velocity field rather than on the convected quantities. The resulting numerical method enjoys the crucial properties of the Euler system, in particular positivity of the approximate density and pressure and the minimal entropy principle. In addition, the approximate solutions generate a dissipative measure-valued solutions of the limit system. In particular, the numerical solutions converge to the smooth solution of the system as long as the latter exists.

On the low Mach number limit for the compressible Euler system

In this paper, we propose a new approach to singular limits of inviscid fluid flows based on the concept of dissipative measure-valued solutions. We show that dissipative measure-valued solutions of the compressible Euler equations converge to the smooth solution of the incompressible Euler system when the Mach number tends to zero. This holds both for well-prepared and ill-prepared initial data, where in the latter case the presence of acoustic waves causes difficulties. However this effect is eliminated on unbounded domains thanks to dispersion.

Homogenization of a non-homogeneous fluid

We consider a non--homogeneous incompressible and heat conducting fluid confined to a 3D domain perforated by tiny holes. The ratio of the diameter of the holes and their mutual distance is critical, the former being equal to $ε^3$, the latter proportional to $ε$, where $ε$ is a small parameter. We identify the asymptotic limit for $ε\to 0$, in which the momentum equation contains a friction term of Brinkman type determined uniquely by the viscosity and geometric properties of the perforation. Besides the inhomogeneity of the fluid, we allow the viscosity and the heat conductivity coefficient to depend on the temperature, where the latter is determined via the Fourier law with homogenized (oscillatory) heat conductivity coefficient that is different for the fluid and the solid holes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first result in the critical case for the inhomogenous heat--conducting fluid.

A diffuse interface model of a two-phase flow with thermal fluctuations

We consider a model of a two phase flow proposed by Anderson, McFadden and Wheeler taking into account possible thermal fluctuations. The mathematical model consists of the compressible Navier-Stokes system coupled with the Cahn-Hilliard equation, where the latter is driven by a multiplicative temporal white noise accounting for thermal fluctuations. We show that existence of dissipative martingale solutions satisfying the associated total energy balance.

Convergence of finite volume schemes for the Euler equations via dissipative measure--valued solutions

The Cauchy problem for the complete Euler system is in general ill posed in the class of admissible (entropy producing) weak solutions. This suggests there might be sequences of approximate solutions that develop fine scale oscillations. Accordingly, the concept of measure--valued solution that capture possible oscillations is more suitable for analysis. We study the convergence of a class of entropy stable finite volume schemes for the barotropic and complete compressible Euler equations in the multidimensional case. We establish suitable stability and consistency estimates and show that the Young measure generated by numerical solutions represents a dissipative measure--valued solution of the Euler system. Here dissipative means that a suitable form of the Second law of thermodynamics is incorporated in the definition of the measure--valued solutions. In particular, using the recently established weak-strong uniqueness principle, we show that the numerical solutions converge pointwise to the regular solution of the limit systems at least on the lifespan of the latter.

Stability of strong solutions to the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system

We identify a large class of objects - dissipative measure-valued (DMV) solutions to the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system - in which the strong solutions are stable. More precisely, a DMV solution coincides with the strong solution emanating from the same initial data as long as the latter exists. The DMV solutions are represented by parameterized families of measures satisfying certain compatibility conditions. They can be seen as an analogue to the dissipative measure-valued solutions introduced earlier in the context of the (inviscid) Euler system.

Maximal dissipation principle for the complete Euler system

We introduce the concept of maximal dissipative measure-valued solution to the complete Euler system. These are solutions that maximize the entropy production rate. We show that these solutions exist under fairly general hypotheses imposed on the data and constitutive relations.

Measure-valued solutions to the complete Euler system revisited

We consider the complete Euler system describing the time evolution of a general inviscid compressible fluid. We introduce a new concept of measure-valued solution based on the total energy balance and entropy inequality for the physical entropy without any renormalization. This class of so-called dissipative measure-valued solutions is large enough to include the vanishing dissipation limits of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system. Our main result states that any sequence of weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with vanishing viscosity and heat conductivity coefficients generates a dissipative measure-valued solution of the Euler system under some physically grounded constitutive relations. Finally, we discuss the same asymptotic limit for the bi-velocity fluid model introduced by H.Brenner.

Stochastic Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations

We study the full Navier--Stokes--Fourier system governing the motion of a general viscous, heat-conducting, and compressible fluid subject to stochastic perturbation. Stochastic effects are implemented through (i) random initial data, (ii) a forcing term in the momentum equation represented by a multiplicative white noise, (iii) random heat source in the internal energy balance. We establish existence of a weak martingale solution under physically grounded structural assumptions. As a byproduct of our theory we can show that stationary martingale solutions only exist in certain trivial cases.

On solvability and ill-posedness of the compressible Euler system subject to stochastic forces

We consider the (barotropic) Euler system describing the motion of a compressible inviscid fluid driven by a stochastic forcing. Adapting the method of convex integration we show that the initial value problem is ill-posed in the class of weak (distributional) solutions. Specifically, we find a sequence $τ_M \to \infty$ of positive stopping times for which the Euler system admits infinitely many solutions originating from the same initial data. The solutions are weak in the PDE sense but strong in the probabilistic sense, meaning, they are defined on an {\it a priori} given stochastic basis and adapted to the driving stochastic process.

Stationary solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes system driven by stochastic forces

We study the long-time behavior of solutions to a stochastically driven Navier-Stokes system describing the motion of a compressible viscous fluid driven by a temporal multiplicative white noise perturbation. The existence of stationary solutions is established in the framework of Lebesgue--Sobolev spaces pertinent to the class of weak martingale solutions. The methods are based on new global-in-time estimates and a combination of deterministic and stochastic compactness arguments. In contrast with the deterministic case, where related results were obtained only under rather restrictive constitutive assumptions for the pressure, the stochastic case is tractable in the full range of constitutive relations allowed by the available existence theory. This can be seen as a kind of regularizing effect of the noise on the global-in-time solutions.
