Frenkel Excitons in Random Systems With Correlated Gaussian Disorder

Optical absorption spectra of Frenkel excitons in random one-dimensional systems are presented. Two models of inhomogeneous broadening, arising from a Gaussian distribution of on-site energies, are considered. In one case the on-site energies are uncorrelated variables whereas in the second model the on-site energies are pairwise correlated (dimers). We observe a red shift and a broadening of the absorption line on increasing the width of the Gaussian distribution. In the two cases we find that the shift is the same, within our numerical accuracy, whereas the broadening is larger when dimers are introduced. The increase of the width of the Gaussian distribution leads to larger differences between uncorrelated and correlated disordered models. We suggest that this higher broadening is due to stronger scattering effects from dimers.

Intentionally disordered superlattices with high dc conductance

We study disordered quantum-well-based semiconductor superlattices where the disorder is intentional and short-range correlated. Such systems consist of quantum-wells of two different thicknesses randomly distributed along the growth direction, with the additional constraint that wells of one kind always appears in pairs. Imperfections due to interface roughness are considered by allowing the quantum-well thicknesses to fluctuate around their {\em ideal} values. As particular examples, we consider wide-gap (GaAs-Ga$_{1-x}$Al$_{x}$As) and narrow-gap (InAs-GaSb) superlattices. We show the existence of a band of extended states in perfect correlated disordered superlattices, giving rise to a strong enhancement of their finite-temperature dc conductance as compared to usual random ones whenever the Fermi level matches this band. This feature is seen to survive even if interface roughness is taken into account. Our predictions can be used to demonstrate experimentally that structural correlations inhibit the localization effects of disorder, even in the presence of imperfections. This effect might be the basis of new, filter-like or other specific-purpose electronic devices.

Understanding delocalization in the Continuous Random Dimer model

We propose an explanation of the bands of extended states appearing in random one dimensional models with correlated disorder, focusing on the Continuous Random Dimer model [A.\ Sánchez, E.\ Maciá, and F.\ Dom\'ınguez-Adame, Phys.\ Rev.\ B {\bf 49}, 147 (1994)]. We show exactly that the transmission coefficient at the resonant energy is independent of the number of host sites between two consecutive dimers. This allows us to understand why are there bands of extended states for every realization of the model as well as the dependence of the bandwidths on the concentration. We carry out a perturbative calculation that sheds more light on the above results. In the conclusion we discuss generalizations of our results to other models and possible applications which arise from our new insight of this problem.

Electronic Structure of Fibonacci Si Delta-Doped Gaas

We study the electronic structure of a new type of Fibonacci superlattice based on Si $δ$-doped GaAs. Assuming that $δ$-doped layers are equally spaced, quasiperiodicity is introduced by selecting two different donor concentrations and arranging them according to the Fibonacci series along the growth direction. The one-electron potential due to $δ$-doping is obtained by means of the Thomas-Fermi approach. The resulting energy spectrum is then found by solving the corresponding effective-mass wave equation. We find that a self-similar spectrum can be seen in the band structure. Electronic transport properties of samples are also discussed and related to the degree of spatial localization of electronic envelope-functions.

Exact Solutions of Two-Band Models of Graded-Gap Superlattices

We have theoretically investigated two-band models of graded-gap superlattices within the envelope-function approximation. Assuming that the gap varies linearly with spatial coordinate, we are able to find exact solutions of the corresponding Dirac-like equation describing the conduction- and valence-band envelope-functions. The dispersion relation inside allowed miniband of the superlattice may be expressed in terms of confluent hypergeometric functions in a closed form.

Exciton Optical Absorption in Self-Similar Aperiodic Lattices

Exciton optical absorption in self-similar aperiodic one-dimensional systems is considered, focusing our attention on Thue-Morse and Fibonacci lattices as canonical examples. The absorption line shape is evaluated by solving the microscopic equations of motion of the Frenkel-exciton problem on the lattice, in which on-site energies take on two values, according to the Thue-Morse or Fibonacci sequences. Results are compared to those obtained in random lattices with the same stechiometry and size. We find that aperiodic order causes the occurrence of well-defined characteristic features in the absorption spectra which clearly differ from the case of random systems, indicating a most peculiar exciton dynamics. We successfully explain the obtained spectra in terms of the two-center problem. This allows us to establish the origin of all the absorption lines by considering the self-similar aperiodic lattices as composed of two-center blocks, within the same spirit of the renormalization group ideas.

Enhanced suppresion of localization in a continuous Random-Dimer Model

We consider a one-dimensional continuous (Kronig-Penney) extension of the (tight-binding) Random Dimer model of Dunlap et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 65, 88 (1990)]. We predict that the continuous model has infinitely many resonances (zeroes of the reflection coefficient) giving rise to extended states instead of the one resonance arising in the discrete version. We present exact, transfer-matrix numerical calculations supporting, both realizationwise and on the average, the conclusion that the model has a very large number of extended states.
