Interplay between tunneling and exchange effects in the two electron double quantum dot molecule

The electronic structure of two vertically coupled quantum dots containing two electrons is investigated in the presence of interdot tunneling. Our approach also includes the interdot exchange and we find that the tunneling is affected by the Coulomb interaction. There is an interplay between direct tunneling, the interdot exchange and the Coulomb interaction influence on the tunneling, which can lead to a zero angular momentum spin-singlet - spin-triplet transition of the ground state, even in the absence of a magnetic field.

Influence of the confinement geometry on surface superconductivity

The nucleation field for surface superconductivity, $H_{c3}$, depends on the geometrical shape of the mesoscopic superconducting sample and is substantially enhanced with decreasing sample size. As an example we studied circular, square, triangular and wedge shaped disks. For the wedge the nucleation field diverges as $H_{c3}/H_{c2}=\sqrt{3}/α$ with decreasing angle ($α$) of the wedge, where $H_{c2}$ is the bulk upper critical field.

Melting of the classical bilayer Wigner crystal: influence of the lattice symmetry

The melting transition of the five different lattices of a bilayer crystal is studied using the Monte-Carlo technique. We found the surprising result that the square lattice has a substantial larger melting temperature as compared to the other lattice structures, which is a consequence of the specific topology of the temperature induced defects. A new melting criterion is formulated which we show to be universal for bilayers as well as for single layer crystals.

Monte-Carlo simulation of the coherent backscattering of electrons in a ballistic system

We study weak localization effects in the ballistic regime as induced by man-made scatterers. Specular reflection of the electrons off these scatterers results into backscattered trajectories which interfere with their time-reversed path resulting in weak localization corrections to the resistance. Using a semi-classical theory, we calculate the change in resistance due to these backscattered trajectories. We found that the inclusion of the exact shape of the scatterers is very important in order to explain the experimental results of Katine et al. [Superlattices and Microstructures 20, 337 (1996)].

Hall potentiometer in the ballistic regime

We demonstrate theoretically how a two-dimensional electron gas can be used to probe local potential profiles using the Hall effect. For small magnetic fields, the Hall resistance is inversely proportional to the average potential profile in the Hall cross and is independent of the shape and the position of this profile in the junction. The bend resistance, on the other hand, is much more sensitive on the exact details of the local potential profile in the cross junction.

Mesoscopic superconducting disks

Using the non-linear Ginzburg-Landau (GL) eqs. type I superconducting disks of finite radius ($R$) and thickness ($d$) are studied in a perpendicular magnetic field. Depending on $R$ and $d$, first or second order phase transitions are found for the normal to superconducting state. For sufficiently large $R$ several transitions in the superconducting phase are found corresponding to different angular momentum giant vortex states. In increasing magnetic field the superconductor is in its ground state, while in field down sweep it is possible to drive the system into metastable states. We also present a quantitative analysis of the relation between the detector output and the sample magnetization. The latter, and the incorporation of the finite thickness of the disks, are essential in order to obtain quantitative agreement with experiment.

Hall magnetocapacitance in two-dimensional electron systems

The magnetocapacitance of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) is investigated experimentally, both under and away from Quantum Hall (QH) conditions, at frequencies between 1 kHz and 100 MHz. The nature of the capacitive signal in a bounded 2DES is determined by a resistive cut-off frequency 1/$τ\propto σ_{xx}$, the longitudinal magnetoconductivity. A new response mechanism is reported for angular frequencies $ω> 1/τ$, which is controlled by the $\em transverse$ or Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ and the boundaries of the sample, even at frequencies far below those of the Edge Magnetoplasma resonances and away from the QH-conditions.

Quantum states in a magnetic anti-dot

We study a new system in which electrons in two dimensions are confined by a non homogeneous magnetic field. The system consists of a heterostructure with on top of it a superconducting disk. We show that in this system electrons can be confined into a dot region. This magnetic anti-dot has the interesting property that the filling of the dot is a discrete function of the magnetic field. The circulating electron current inside and outside the anti-dot can be in opposite direction for certain bound states. And those states exhibit a diamagnetic to paramagnetic transition with increasing magnetic field. The absorption spectrum consists of many peaks, some of which violate Kohn's theorem, and which is due to the coupling of the center of mass motion with the other degrees of freedom.

The two electron artificial molecule

Exact results for the classical and quantum system of two vertically coupled two-dimensional single electron quantum dots are obtained as a function of the interatomic distance (d) and with perpendicular magnetic field. The classical system exhibits a second order structural transition as a function of d which is smeared out and shifted to lower d values in the quantum case. The spin-singlet - spin-triplet oscillations are shifted to larger magnetic fields with increasing d and are quenched for a sufficiently large interatomic distance.

Ground-state energy of confined charged bosons in two dimensions

The Pade approximant technique and the variational Monte Carlo method are applied to determine the ground-state energy of a finite number of charged bosons in two dimensions confined by a parabolic trap. The particles interact repulsively through a Coulombic, 1/r, potential. Analytic expressions for the ground-state energy are obtained. The convergence of the Pade sequence and comparison with the Monte Carlo results show that the error of the Pade estimate is less than 4% at any boson density and is exact in the extreme situations of very dilute and high density.

Vortex phase diagram for mesoscopic superconducting disks

Solving numerically the 3D non linear Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equations, we study equilibrium and nonequilibrium phase transitions between different superconducting states of mesoscopic disks which are thinner than the coherence length and the penetration depth. We have found a smooth transition from a multi-vortex superconducting state to a giant vortex state with increasing both the disk thickness and the magnetic field. A vortex phase diagram is obtained which shows, as function of the magnetic field, a re-entrant behavior between the multi-vortex and the giant vortex state.

Binding energy of localized biexcitons in quantum wells

A variational calculation of the ground state energy of a biexciton in a GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well is presented. The well width fluctuations leading to trapping of the biexcitons are modeled by a parabolic potential. The results obtained for different well widths are compared with recent experimental data. Good agreement is obtained both for the biexciton binding energy and for the Haynes factor. We find that the structure of a biexciton is similar to the one of the H_2 molecule.

Off center $D^-$ centers in a quantum well in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field: angular momentum transition and magnetic evaporation

We investigate the effect of the position of the donor in the quantum well on the energy spectrum and the oscillator strength of the D- system in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. As a function of the magnetic field we find that when the D- centers are placed sufficiently off-center they undergo singlet-triplet transitions which are similar to those found in many-electron parabolic quantum dots. The main difference is that the number of such transitions depends on the position of the donor and only a finite number of such singlet-triplet transitions are found as function of the strength of the magnetic field. For sufficiently large magnetic fields the two electron system becomes unbound. For the near center D- system no singlet-triplet and no unbinding of the D- is found with increasing magnetic field. A magnetic field vs. donor position phase diagram is presented that depends on the width of the quantum well.

Hysteresis in mesoscopic superconducting disks: the Bean-Livingston barrier

The magnetization behavior of mesoscopic superconducting disks can show hysteretic behavior which we explain by using the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory and properly taking into account the de-magnetization effects due to geometrical form factors. In large disks the Bean-Livingston surface barrier is responsible for the hysteresis. While in small disks a volume barrier is responsible for this hysteresis. It is shown that although the sample magnetization is diamagnetic (negative), the measured magnetization can be positive at certain fields as observed experimentally, which is a consequence of the de-magnetization effects and the experimental set up.

Magnetoplasma excitations of two vertically coupled dots

A classical hydrodynamic approach is used to calculate the magnetoplasma excitations of two vertically coupled electron dots. The electrons are confined by different parabolic potentials in which case Kohn's theorem is no longer valid. The equilibrium density profiles of the electrons in both dots are calculated as function of the interdot distance. We find that for unequal confinements of the two dots the electron density in one of the dots becomes ring-like. The electron densities are then used to obtain the magnetoplasma frequencies. The oscillator strengths are calculated, and we find that other then the center of mass modes can be excited due to the electron-electron interactions.

Magnetization of mesoscopic superconducting discs

Solutions of Ginzburg-Landau eqns. coupled with three dimensional Maxwell eqns. reveal intriguing magnetic response of small superconducting particles, qualitatively different from the two dimensional approximation but in agreement with recent experiments. Depending on the radius and thickness first or second order transitions are found for the normal to superconducting state. For a sufficient large radius of the disc several transitions in the superconducting phase are obtained which correspond to different angular momentum giant vortex states. The incorporation of the finite thickness in the calculation is crucial in order to obtain agreement with the position and the size of these jumps, and the line shape and magnitude of the magnetization curves.

Conductance Quantization in a Periodically Modulated Quantum Channel: backscattering and mode mixing

It is known that the conductance of a quantum point contact is quantized in units of $2e^2/h$ and this quantization is destroyed by a non-adiabatic scatterer in the point contact, due to backscattering. Recently, it was shown [Phys. Rev. Lett. 71, 137 (1993)] that taking many non-adiabatic scatterers periodically in a quantum channel, the quantization can be recovered. We study this conductance quantization of a periodic system in the presence of a strong defect. A periodic arrangement of double-stubs give remarkable quantization of conductance. A periodic arrangement of double-constrictions also gives a very good quantization only when the separation between the constrictions is small. We conclude that conductance quantization of a periodically modulated channel is robust.

Classical double-layer atoms: artificial molecules

The groundstate configuration and the eigenmodes of two parallel two-dimensional classical atoms are obtained as function of the inter-atomic distance (d). The classical particles are confined by identical harmonic wells and repel each other through a Coulomb potential. As function of d we find several structural transitions which are of first or second order. For first (second) order transitions the first (second) derivative of the energy with respect to d is discontinuous, the radial position of the particles changes discontinuously (continuously) and the frequency of the eigenmodes exhibit a jump (one mode becomes soft, i.e. its frequency becomes zero).
