Pade approximants for the ground-state energy of closed-shell quantum dots

Analytic approximations to the ground-state energy of closed-shell quantum dots (number of electrons from 2 to 210) are presented in the form of two-point Pade approximants. These Pade approximants are constructed from the small- and large-density limits of the energy. We estimated that the maximum error, reached for intermediate densities, is less than 3%. Within the present approximation the ground-state is found to be unpolarized.

Wigner crystallization in quantum electron bilayers

The phase diagram of quantum electron bilayers in zero magnetic field is obtained using density functional theory. For large electron densities the system is in the liquid phase, while for smaller densities the liquid may freeze (Wigner crystallization) into four different crystalline phases; the lattice symmetry and the critical density depend on the the inter-layer distance. The phase boundaries between different Wigner crystals consist of both first and second order transitions, depending on the phases involved, and join the freezing curve at three different triple points.

Classical artificial two-dimensional atoms: the Thomson model

The ring configurations for classical two-dimensional atoms are calculated within the Thomson model and compared with the results from `exact' numerical simulations. The influence of the functional form of the confinement potential and the repulsive interaction potential between the particles on the configurations is investigated. We also give exact results on those eigenmodes of the system whose frequency does not depend on the number of particles in the system.

Electron capture in GaAs quantum wells via electron-electron and optic phonon scattering

Electron capture times in a separate confinement quantum well (QW) structure with finite electron density are calculated for electron-electron (e-e) and electron-polar optic phonon (e-pop) scattering. We find that the capture time oscillates as function of the QW width for both processes with the same period, but with very different amplitudes. For an electron density of 10^11 cm^-2 the e-e capture time is 10-1000 times larger than the e-pop capture time except for QW widths near the resonance minima, where it is only 2-3 times larger. With increasing electron density the e-e capture time decreases and near the resonance becomes smaller than the e-pop capture time. Our e-e capture time values are two-to-three orders of magnitude larger than previous results of Blom et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 62, 1490 (1993)]. The role of the e-e capture in QW lasers is therefore readdressed.

Stability, dynamical properties and melting of a classical bi-layer Wigner Crystal

We investigate the stability, the dynamical properties and melting of a two-dimensional (2D) Wigner crystal (WC) of classical Coulombic particles in a bi-layer structure. Compared to the single-layer WC, this system shows a rich phase diagram. Five different crystalline phases are stable; the energetically favoured structure can be tuned by changing either the inter-layer distance or the particle density. Phase boundaries consist of both continuous and discontinuous transitions. We calculated the phonon excitations of the system within the harmonic approximation and we evaluated the melting temperature of the bi-layer WC by use of a modified Lindemann criterion, appropriate to 2D systems. We minimized the harmonic free-energy of the system with respect to the lattice geometry at different values of temperature/inter-layer distance and we found no temperature-induced structural phase transition.

Vortex Structure Around a Magnetic Dot in Planar Superconductors

The problem of the giant vortex state around a magnetic dot which is embedded in a superconducting film is investigated. The full non-linear, self-consistent Ginzburg-Landau equations are solved numerically in order to calculate the free energy, the order parameter of the host superconductor, the internal magnetic field due to the supercurrents, the corresponding current density, the magnetization probed in the vicinity of the dot, and the normal electron density as a function of the various parameters of the system. We find that, as we increase the magnetic moment of the dot, higher flux quanta vortex states become energetically more favorable, as they can better compete with the external magnetic field via the Meissner effect. In addition to that, they progressively become closer to each other in energy with direct experimental consequences, i.e. physical quantities like magnetization may fluctuate when measured, for example, as a function of a uniform external magnetic field.

Magnetotransport in a pseudomorphic GaAs/GaInAs/GaAlAs heterostructure with a Si delta-doping layer

Magnetotransport properties of a pseudomorphic GaAs/Ga0.8In0.2As/Ga0.75Al0.25As heterostructure are investigated in pulsed magnetic fields up to 50 T and at temperatures of T=1.4 K and 4.2 K. The structure studied consists of a Si delta-layer parallel to a Ga0.8In0.2As quantum well (QW). The dark electron density of the structure is n_e=1.67x 10^16 m^-2. By illumination the density can be increased up to a factor of 4; this way the second subband in the Ga0.8In0.2As QW can become populated as well as the Si delta-layer. The presence of electrons in the delta-layer results in drastic changes in the transport data, especially at magnetic fields beyond 30 T. The phenomena observed are interpreted as: 1) magnetic freeze-out of carriers in the delta-layer when a low density of electrons is present in the delta-layer, and 2) quantization of the electron motion in the two dimensional electron gases in both the Ga0.8In0.2As QW and the Si delta-layer in the case of high densities. These conclusions are corroborated by the numerical results of our theoretical model. We obtain a satisfactory agreement between model and experiment.

Spectral properties of charged particles in a classical finite two-dimensional system

We present a study of the spectral properties like the energy spectrum, the eigenmodes and density of states of a classical finite system of two-dimensional (2D) charged particles which are confined by a quadratic potential. Using the method of Newton optimization we obtain the ground state and the metastable states. For a given configuration the eigenvectors and eigenfrequencies for the normal modes are obtained using the Householder diagonalization technique for the dynamical matrix whose elements are the second derivative of the potential energy. For small clusters the lowest excitation corresponds to an intershell rotation. The energy barrier for such rotations is calculated. For large clusters the lowest excitation consists of a vortex/anti-vortex pair. The Lindeman melting criterion is used to calculate the order-disorder transition temperature for intershell rotation and intershell diffusion. The value of the transition temperature at which intershell rotation becomes possible depends very much on the configuration of the cluster, i.e. the distribution of the particles between the different shells. Magic numbers are associated to clusters which are most stable against intershell rotation. The specific heat of the cluster is also calculated using
