Continuous phase transition in a spin-glass model without time-reversal symmetry

We investigate the phase transition in a strongly disordered short-range three-spin interaction model characterized by the absence of time reversal symmetry in the Hamiltonian. In the mean-field limit the model is well described by the Adam-Gibbs-DiMarzio scenario for the glass transition; however in the short-range case this picture turns out to be modified. The model presents a finite temperature continuous phase transition characterized by a divergent spin-glass susceptibility and a negative specific heat exponent. We expect the nature of the transition in this 3-spin model to be the same as the transition in the Edwards-Anderson model in a magnetic field, with the advantage that the strong crossover effects present in the latter case are absent.

On the Phase Structure of the 3D Edwards Anderson Spin Glass

We characterize numerically the properties of the phase transition of the three dimensional Ising spin glass with Gaussian couplings and of the low temperature phase. We compute critical exponents on large lattices. We study in detail the overlap probability distribution and the equilibrium overlap-overlap correlation functions. We find a clear agreement with off-equilibrium results from previous work. These results strongly support the existence of a continuous spontaneous replica symmetry breaking in three dimensional spin glasses.

The Glassy Potts Model

We introduce a Potts model with quenched, frustrated disorder, that enjoys of a gauge symmetry that forbids spontaneous magnetization, and allows the glassy phase to extend from $T_c$ down to T=0. We study numerical the 4 dimensional model with $q=4$ states. We show the existence of a glassy phase, and we characterize it by studying the probability distributions of an order parameter, the binder cumulant and the divergence of the overlap susceptibility. We show that the dynamical behavior of the system is characterized by aging.

Scaling corrections: site-percolation and Ising model in three dimensions

Using Finite-Size Scaling techniques we obtain accurate results for critical quantities of the Ising model and the site percolation, in three dimensions. We pay special attention in parameterizing the corrections-to-scaling, what is necessary to put the systematic errors below the statistical ones.

Comment on ``Dynamical Heterogeneities in a Supercooled Lennard-Jones Liquid''

In two recent interesting letters evidence was presented for the existence of a growing dynamic correlation length when we approach the glass transition from the liquid phase (a similar divergence is present also in the off-equilibrium dynamics below $T_c$). Here we would like to point out that this phenomenon can be easily predicted using the replica approach.

Small Window Overlaps Are Effective Probes of Replica Symmetry Breaking in 3D Spin Glasses

We compute numerically small window overlaps in the three dimensional Edwards Anderson spin glass. We show that they behave in the way implied by the Replica Symmetry Breaking Ansatz, that they do not qualitatively differ from the full volume overlap and do not tend to a trivial function when increasing the lattice volume. On the contrary we show they are affected by small finite volume effects, and are interesting tools for the study of the features of the spin glass phase.

A general method to determine replica symmetry breaking transitions

We introduce a new parameter to investigate replica symmetry breaking transitions using finite-size scaling methods. Based on exact equalities initially derived by F. Guerra this parameter is a direct check of the self-averaging character of the spin-glass order parameter. This new parameter can be used to study models with time reversal symmetry but its greatest interest concerns models where this symmetry is absent. We apply the method to long-range and short-range Ising spin glasses with and without magnetic field as well as short-range multispin interaction spin glasses.

Critical exponents of the three dimensional diluted Ising model

We study the phase diagram of the site-diluted Ising model in a wide dilution range, through Monte Carlo simulations and Finite-Size Scaling techniques. Our results for the critical exponents and universal cumulants turn out to be dilution-independent, but only after a proper infinite volume extrapolation, taking into account the leading corrections-to-scaling terms.

Crossovers in the Two Dimensional Ising Spin Glass with ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions

By means of extensive computer simulations we analyze in detail the two dimensional $\pm J$ Ising spin glass with ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions. We found a crossover from ferromagnetic to ``spin glass'' like order both from numerical simulations and analytical arguments. We also present evidences of a second crossover from the ``spin glass'' behavior to a paramagnetic phase for the largest volume studied.

Finite-size scaling study of the d=4 site-diluted Ising

We study the four dimensional site-diluted Ising model using finite-size scaling techniques. We explore the whole parameter space (density-coupling) in order to determine the Universality Class of the transition line. Our data are compatible with Mean Field behavior plus logarithmic corrections.

The Modular Structure of Kauffman Networks

This is the second paper of a series of two about the structural properties that influence the asymptotic dynamics of Random Boolean Networks. Here we study the functionally independent clusters in which the relevant elements, introduced and studied in our first paper, are subdivided. We show that the phase transition in Random Boolean Networks can also be described as a percolation transition. The statistical properties of the clusters of relevant elements (that we call modules) give an insight on the scaling behavior of the attractors of the critical networks that, according to Kauffman, have a biological analogy as a model of genetic regulatory systems.

Relevant elments, Magnetization and Dynamical Properties in Kauffman Networks: a Numerical Study

This is the first of two papers about the structure of Kauffman networks. In this paper we define the relevant elements of random networks of automata, following previous work by Flyvbjerg and Flyvbjerg and Kjaer, and we study numerically their probability distribution in the chaotic phase and on the critical line of the model. A simple approximate argument predicts that their number scales as sqrt(N) on the critical line, while it is linear with N in the chaotic phase and independent of system size in the frozen phase. This argument is confirmed by numerical results. The study of the relevant elements gives useful information about the properties of the attractors in critical networks, where the pictures coming from either approximate computation methods or from simulations are not very clear.

Attractors in fully asymmetric neural networks

The statistical properties of the length of the cycles and of the weights of the attraction basins in fully asymmetric neural networks (i.e. with completely uncorrelated synapses) are computed in the framework of the annealed approximation which we previously introduced for the study of Kauffman networks. Our results show that this model behaves essentially as a Random Map possessing a reversal symmetry. Comparison with numerical results suggests that the approximation could become exact in the infinite size limit.

Ising exponents in the two-dimensional site-diluted Ising model

We study the site-diluted Ising model in two dimensions with Monte Carlo simulations. Using finite-size scaling techniques we compute the critical exponents observing deviations from the pure Ising ones. The differences can be explained as the effects of logarithmic corrections, without requiring to change the Universality Class.

The four dimensional site-diluted Ising model: a finite-size scaling study

Using finite-size scaling techniques, we study the critical properties of the site-diluted Ising model in four dimensions. We carry out a high statistics Monte Carlo simulation for several values of the dilution. The results support the perturbative scenario: there is only the Ising fixed point with large logarithmic scaling corrections. We obtain, using the Perturbative Renormalization Group, functional forms for the scaling of several observables that are in agreement with the numerical data.

4D Spin Glasses in Magnetic Field Have a Mean Field like Phase

By using numerical simulations we show that the 4D $J=\pm 1$ Edwards Anderson spin glass in magnetic field undergoes a mean field like phase transition. We use a dynamical approach: we simulate large lattices (of volume $V$) and work out the behavior of the system in limit where both $t$ and $V$ go to infinity, but where the limit $V \to \infty$ is taken first. By showing that the dynamic overlap $q$ converges to a value smaller than the static one we exhibit replica symmetry breaking. The critical exponents are compatible with the ones obtained by mean field computations.

Temperature evolution and bifurcations of metastable states in mean-field spin glasses, with connections with structural glasses

The correlations of the free-energy landscape of mean-field spin glasses at different temperatures are investigated, concentrating on models with a first order freezing transition. Using a ``potential function'' we follow the metastable states of the model in temperature, and discuss the possibility of level crossing (which we do not find) and multifurcation (which we find). The dynamics at a given temperature starting from an equilibrium configuration at a different temperature is also discussed. In presence of multifurcation, we find that the equilibrium is never achieved, leading to aging behaviour at slower energy levels than usual aging. The relevance of the observed mechanisms for real structural glasses is discussed, and some numerical simulations of a soft sphere model of glass are presented.
