Observability of the Lightest CMSSM Higgs Boson at Hadron Colliders

We discuss the observability of the lightest neutral Higgs boson in the constrained MSSM (CMSSM), with universal soft supersymmetry-breaking parameters, at hadron colliders such as the Tevatron and the LHC. We take account of the constraints on parameter space provided by LEP, the measured rate of b to s gamma decay, the cosmological relic density Omega h^2, and the recent measurement of g_mu - 2. We normalize products of the expected CMSSM Higgs production cross sections and decay branching ratios (sigma B)_CMSSM relative to those expected for a Standard Model Higgs boson of the same mass. In the h to gamma gamma channel, we find that (sigma B)_CMSSM > 0.85 (sigma B)_SM. In the W/t tbar + h, h to b bbar channels, we find that (sigma B)_CMSSM \~ 1.05 (sigma B)_SM. We conclude that the lightest CMSSM Higgs boson should be almost as easy to see as the Standard Model Higgs boson: in particular, it should be discoverable with about 15/fb of luminosity at the Tevatron or 10/fb of luminosity at the LHC.

Do electroweak precision data and Higgs-mass constraints rule out a scalar bottom quark with mass of O(5 GeV)?

We investigate the phenomenological implications of a light scalar bottom quark, with a mass of about the bottom quark mass, within the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The study of such a scenario is of theoretical interest, since, depending on their production and decay modes, light sbottoms may have escaped experimental detection up to now and, in addition, may naturally appear for large values of \tanβ. In this article we show that such a light sbottom cannot be ruled out by the constraints from the electroweak precision data and the present bound on the lightest CP-even Higgs boson mass at LEP. It is inferred that a light sbottom scenario requires in general a relatively light scalar top quark whose mass is typically about the top-quark mass. It is also shown that under these conditions the lightest CP-even Higgs boson decays predominantly into scalar bottom quarks in most of the parameter space and that its mass is restricted to m_h ~< 123 GeV.

Precision Observables in the MSSM: Leading Electroweak Two-loop Corrections

The leading electroweak MSSM two-loop corrections to the $ρ$-parameter are calculated. They are obtained by evaluating the two-loop self-energies of the Z and the W boson at O(Gf^2 m_t^4) in the limit of heavy scalar quarks. A very compact expression is derived, depending on the ratio of the CP-odd Higgs boson mass, M_A, and the top quark mass, m_t. Expressions for the limiting cases M_A >> m_t and M_A << m_t are also given. The decoupling of the non-SM contribution in the limit M_A -> oo is verified at the two-loop level. The numerical effect of the leading electroweak MSSM two-loop corrections is analyzed in comparison with the leading corrections of O(Gf^2 m_t^4) in the SM and with the O(alpha alpha_s) corrections in the MSSM.

Higgs Production and Decay in the MSSM: Status and Perspectives

The theoretical predictions in the MSSM for Higgs-boson production at a future e^+e^- Linear Collider and Higgs-boson decay processes are discussed focusing in particular on recent diagrammatic two-loop results in the MSSM Higgs sector. The present status of the theoretical predictions is briefly summarized, and it is emphasized that considerable improvements will be necessary in order to match the high experimental accuracy achievable at a future Linear Collider.

Neutral MSSM Higgs-boson production at e+e- colliders in the Feynman-diagrammatic approach

We calculate the cross sections for the neutral Higgs-boson production at e+e- colliders in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) using the Feynman-diagrammatic approach and the on-shell renormalization scheme. We incorporate the Higgs-boson propagator corrections, evaluated up to two-loop order, into the prediction of the cross sections for the Higgs-boson production mechanism e+e- -> hZ, hA. The propagator corrections consist of the full one-loop contribution, including the effects of non-vanishing external momentum, and at the two-loop level of the dominant corrections of O(alpha alpha_s) and further sub-dominant contributions. The results are supplemented with the complete set of one-loop vertex and box corrections. The effects of the two-loop propagator corrections are investigated in detail. We briefly discuss also the effect of the box contributions for high $\sqrt{s}$. We compare our results with the case where only the corrections to the effective mixing angle, evaluated within the renormalization-group-improved one-loop Effective Potential approach, are taken into account. We find agreement better than 10% for LEP2 energies and deviations larger than 20% for $\sqrt{s}$ = 500 GeV.

Two-loop electroweak contributions to $Δr$

A review is given on the quantum correction $Δr$ in the $W$--$Z$ mass correlation at the electroweak two-loop level, as derived from the calculation of the muon lifetime in the Standard Model. Exact results for $Δr$ and the $W$-mass prediction including ${\mathcal{O}}(α^2)$ corrections with fermion loops are presented and compared with previous results of a next-to-leading order expansion in the top-quark mass.

Electroweak Precision Tests with GigaZ

By running the prospective high-energy e^+e^- collider TESLA in the GigaZ mode on the Z resonance, experiments can be performed on the basis of more than 10^9 Z events. This will allow the measurement of the effective electroweak mixing angle to an accuracy of δsin^2(theta_W,eff) \approx \pm 10^-5. The W boson mass is likewise expected to be measurable with an error of δM_W \approx \pm 6 MeV near the W^+W^ threshold. We review the electroweak precision tests that can be performed with these high precision measurements within the Standard Model (SM) and its minimal Supersymmetric extension (MSSM). The complementarity of direct measurements at a prospective linear e^+e^- collider and indirect constraints following from measurements performed at GigaZ is emphasized.

Calculation of fermionic two-loop contributions to muon decay

The computation of the correction Δr in the W-Z mass correlation, derived from muon decay, is described at the two-loop level in the Standard Model. Technical aspects which become relevant at this level are studied, e.g. gauge-parameter independent mass renormalization, ghost-sector renormalization and the treatment of γ_5. Exact results for Δr and the W mass prediction including O(α^2) corrections with fermion loops are presented and compared with previous results of a next-to-leading order expansion in the top-quark mass.

Higgs-mass predictions and electroweak precision observables in the Standard Model and the MSSM

Higher-order results for electroweak precision observables in the Standard Model are analyzed in view of the experimental accuracies achievable at the present and the next generation of colliders, and the indirect prediction of the Higgs-boson mass from the precision data is discussed. Within the MSSM, two-loop results for the lightest CP-even Higgs-boson mass are confronted with the exclusion limits from LEP. Possible precision tests of the MSSM at a future linear collider are furthermore investigated.

Reconciling the Two-Loop Diagrammatic and Effective Field Theory Computations of the Mass of the Lightest CP-even Higgs Boson in the MSSM

The mass of the lightest CP-even Higgs boson of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) has previously been computed including O(alpha alpha_s) two-loop contributions by an on-shell diagrammatic method, while approximate analytic results have also been obtained via renormalization-group-improved effective potential and effective field theory techniques. Initial comparisons of the corresponding two-loop results revealed an apparent discrepancy between terms that depend logarithmically on the supersymmetry-breaking scale, and different dependences of the non-logarithmic terms on the squark mixing parameter, X_t. In this paper, we determine the origin of these differences as a consequence of different renormalization schemes in which both calculations are performed. By re-expressing the on-shell result in terms of MS-bar parameters, the logarithmic two-loop contributions obtained by the different approaches are shown to coincide. The remaining difference, arising from genuine non-logarithmic two-loop contributions, is identified, and its effect on the maximal value of the lightest CP-even Higgs boson mass is discussed. Finally, we show that in a simple analytic approximation to the Higgs mass, the leading two-loop radiative corrections can be absorbed to a large extent into an effective one-loop expression by evaluating the running top quark mass at appropriately chosen energy scales.

Physics Impact of GigaZ

By running the prospective high-energy e^+ e^- collider TESLA in the GigaZ mode on the Z resonance, experiments can be performed on the basis of more than 10^9 Z events. They will allow the measurement of the effective electroweak mixing angle to an accuracy of approximately +- 10^-5. Likewise the W boson mass is expected to be measurable with an error of about 6 MeV near the W^+ W^- threshold. In this note, we study the accuracy with which the Higgs boson mass can be determined from loop corrections to these observables in the Standard Model. The comparison with a directly observed Higgs boson may be used to constrain new physics scales affecting the virtual loops. We also study constraints on the heavy Higgs particles predicted in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, which are very difficult to observe directly for large masses. Similarly, it is possible to constrain the mass of the heavy scalar top particle.

Constraints on tan beta in the MSSM from the Upper Bound on the Mass of the Lightest Higgs boson

We investigate the possibilities for constraining tan beta within the MSSM by combining the theoretical result for the upper bound on the lightest Higgs-boson mass as a function of tan beta with the informations from the direct experimental search for this particle. We discuss the commonly used ``benchmark'' scenario, in which the parameter values m_top = 175 GeV and M_susy = 1 TeV are chosen, and analyze in detail the effects of varying the other SUSY parameters. We furthermore study the impact of the new diagrammatic two-loop result for mh, which leads to an increase of the upper bound on mh by several GeV, on present and future constraints on tan beta. We suggest a slight generalization of the ``benchmark'' scenario, such that the scenario contains the maximal possible values for mh(tan beta) within the MSSM for fixed m_top and M_susy. The implications of allowing values for m_top, M_susy beyond the ``benchmark'' scenario are also discussed.

Report of the Beyond the Standard Model Working Group of the 1999 UK Phenomenology Workshop on Collider Physics (Durham)

The Beyond the Standard Model Working Group discussed a variety of topics relating to exotic searches at current and future colliders, and the phenomenology of current models beyond the Standard Model. For example, various supersymmetric (SUSY) and extra dimensions search possibilities and constraints are presented. Fine-tuning implications of SUSY searches are derived. The implications of Higgs (non)-discovery are discussed, as well as the program HDECAY. The individual contributions are included seperately. Much of the enclosed work is original, although some is reviewed.

Decay widths of the neutral CP-even MSSM Higgs bosons in the Feynman-diagrammatic approach

In the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) we incorporate the Higgs-boson propagator corrections, evaluated up to two-loop order, into the prediction of $Γ$(h -> ff) and BR(h -> ff) for f = b, c, $τ$. The propagator corrections consist of the full one-loop contribution, including the effects of non-vanishing external momentum, and corrections of O(alpha alpha_s) at the two-loop level. The results are supplemented with the dominant one-loop QED corrections and final state QCD corrections from both gluons and gluinos. The effects of the two-loop propagator corrections and of the one-loop gluino contributions are investigated in detail. Our results are compared with the result obtained within the renormalization group approach. Agreement within 10% is found for most parts of the MSSM parameter space.

Aspects of GMSB Phenomenology at TeV Colliders

The status of two on-going studies concerning important aspects of the phenomenology of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking (GMSB) models at TeV colliders is reported. The first study deals with the characteristics of the light Higgs boson spectrum allowed by the (minimal and non-minimal) GMSB framework. Today's most accurate GMSB model generation and two-loop Feynman-diagrammatic calculation of m_h have been combined. The Higgs masses are shown in dependence of various model parameters at the messenger and electroweak scales. In the minimal model, an upper limit on m_h of about 124 GeV is found for m_t = 175 GeV. The second study is focused on the measurement of the fundamental SUSY breaking scale sqrt(F) at the LHC in the GMSB scenario where a stau is the next-to-lightest SUSY particle (NLSP) and decays into a gravitino with c*tau_NLSP in the range 0.5 m to 1 km. This implies the measurement of mass and lifetime of long lived sleptons. The identification is performed by determining the time of flight in the ATLAS muon chambers. Accessible range and precision on sqrt(F) achievable with a counting method are assessed.
