The Physics of the Glass Transition

In this talk, after a short phenomenological introduction on glasses, I will describe some recent progresses that have been done in glasses using the replica method in the definition and in the evaluation of the configurational entropy (or complexity). These results are at the basis of some analytic computations of the thermodynamic glass transition and of the properties below the phase transition point.

Theory of Non-linear Susceptibility and Correlation Length in Glasses and Liquids

Within the framework of the effective potential theory of the structural glass transition, we calculate for the p-spin model a static nonlinear susceptibility related to a four-point density correlation function, and show that it grows and diverges in mean field with exponent $γ=1/2$ as the mode coupling critical temperature T_c is approached from below. When T_c is approached from above, we calculate within the mode coupling framework a dynamic nonlinear susceptibility and show that there is a characteristic time where the susceptibility is a maximum, and that this time grows with decreasing T. We find that this susceptibility diverges as T_c is approached from above, and has key features in common with the ``displacement-displacement susceptibility'' recently introduced to measure correlated particle motion in simulations of glass-forming liquids.

On the origin of ultrametricity

In this paper we show that in systems where the probability distribution of the the overlap is non trivial in the infinity volume limit, the property of ultrametricity can be proved in general starting from two very simple and natural assumptions: each replica is equivalent to the others (replica equivalence or stochastic stability) and all the mutual information about a pair of equilibrium configurations is encoded in their mutual distance or overlap (separability or overlap equivalence).

The thermodynamical liquid-glass transition in a Lennard-Jones binary mixture

We use the results derived in the framework of the replica approach to study the liquid-glass thermodynamic transition. The main results are rederived without using replicas and applied to the study of the Lennard-Jones binary mixture introduced by Kob and Andersen. We find that there is a phase transition due to the entropy crisis. We compute both analytically and numerically the value of the phase transition point $T_{K}$ and the specific heat in the low temperature phase.

Physics of glassy systems

In this talk I present some of the recent theoretical results that have been obtained on glassy systems like spin glasses or structural glasses. The physical principles at the basis of the theory are explained in a simple language (without using replicas) and the results are compared with large scale numerical simulations. Finally we introduce the generalized fluctuation dissipation relation that can be directly tested in experiments with the present day technology.

A new approach for the analytic computation of the Instantaneous Normal Modes spectrum

In the context of the Instantaneous Normal Mode approach, the spectrum of the Hessian of Hamiltonian is a key quantity to describe liquids behaviour. The determination of the spectrum represents a major task for theoretical studies, and has been addressed recently in various works. In this paper a new approach for the analytic computation of the Hessian spectrum is presented. The one dimensional case for a system of particles interacting via a purely repulsive potential at low density is analyzed in details and the spectrum is computed exactly also in the localized sector. Finally, the possible extensions of the method are discussed, together with a comparison with different approaches to the problem.

Thermodynamics of binary mixture glasses

We compute the thermodynamic properties of the glass phase in a binary mixture of soft spheres. Our approach is a generalization to mixtures of the replica strategy, recently proposed by Mezard and Parisi, providing a first principle statistical mechanics computation of the thermodynamics of glasses. The method starts from the inter-atomic potentials, and translates the problem into the study of a molecular liquid. We compare uor analytical predictions to numerical simulations, focusing onto the values of the thermodynamic transition and the configurational entropy.

Replica and Glasses

In these two lectures I review our theoretical understanding of spin glasses paying a particular attention to the basic physical ideas. We introduce the replica method and we describe its probabilistic consequences (we stress the recently discovered importance of stochastic stability). We show that the replica method is not restricted to systems with quenched disorder. We present the consequences on the dynamics of the system when it slows approaches equilibrium are presented: they are confirmed by large scale simulations, while we are still awaiting for a direct experimental

P-adic numbers and replica symmetry breaking

The p-adic formulation of replica symmetry breaking is presented. In this approach ultrametricity is a natural consequence of the basic properties of the p-adic numbers. Many properties can be simply derived in this approach and p-adic Fourier transform seems to be an promising tool.

Analytic computation of the Instantaneous Normal Modes spectrum in low density liquids

We analytically compute the spectrum of the Hessian of the Hamiltonian for a system of N particles interacting via a purely repulsive potential in one dimension. Our approach is valid in the low density regime, where we compute the exact spectrum also in the localized sector. We finally perform a numerical analysis of the localization properties of the eigenfunctions.

A pedagogical introduction to the replica method for fragile glasses

In this note I present a simplified version of the recent computation (Mezard and Parisi 1998, 1999) of the properties of glasses in the low temperature phase in the framework of the replica theory, using an extension of the tools used in liquid theory. I will only consider here the case of the internal energy at T=0, which can be studied in a simple way without introducing replicas.

Comment on "Numerical Study on Aging Dynamics in the 3D Ising Spin Glass Model"

We show that the dynamical behavior of the 3D Ising spin glass with Gaussian couplings is not compatible with a droplet dynamics. We show that this is implied from the data of reference cond-mat/9904143, that, when analyzed in an accurate way, give multiple evidences of this fact. Our study is based on the analysis of the overlap-overlap correlation function, at different values of the separation r and of the time t.

A first principle computation of the thermodynamics of glasses

We propose a first principle computation of the equilibrium thermodynamics of simple fragile glasses starting from the two body interatomic potential. A replica formulation translates this problem into that of a gas of interacting molecules, each molecule being built of m atoms, and having a gyration radius (related to the cage size) which vanishes at zero temperature. We use a small cage expansion, valid at low temperatures, which allows to compute the cage size, the specific heat (which follows the Dulong and Petit law), and the configurational entropy.

Generalized off-equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation relations in random Ising systems

We show that the numerical method based on the off-equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation relation does work and is very useful and powerful in the study of disordered systems which show a very slow dynamics. We have verified that it gives the right information in the known cases (diluted ferromagnets and random field Ising model far from the critical point) and we used it to obtain more convincing results on the frozen phase of finite-dimensional spin glasses. Moreover we used it to study the Griffiths phase of the diluted and the random field Ising models.

Finite dimensional corrections to mean field in a short-range p-spin glassy model

In this work we discuss a short range version of the $p$-spin model. The model is provided with a parameter that allows to control the crossover with the mean field behaviour. We detect a discrepancy between the perturbative approach and numerical simulation. We attribute it to non-perturbative effects due to the finite probability that each particular realization of the disorder allows for the formation of regions where the system is less frustrated and locally freezes at a higher temperature.

Measuring equilibrium properties in aging systems

We corroborate the idea of a close connection between replica symmetry breaking and aging in the linear response function for a large class of finite-dimensional systems with short-range interactions. In these system, characterized by a continuity condition with respect to weak random perturbations of the Hamiltonian, the ``fluctuation dissipation ratio'' in off-equilibrium dynamics should be equal to the static cumulative distribution function of the overlaps. This allows for an experimental measurement of the equilibrium order parameter function.
