Evolution of Fermi surface and normal-state gap in chemically substituted cuprates Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2-x}$Bi$_{x}$CuO$_{6+δ}$

We have performed a systematic angle-resolved photoemission study of chemically substituted cuprates Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2-x}$Bi$_{x}$CuO$_{6+δ}$. We observed that the Fermi surface area shrinks linearly with Bi substitution content $x$, reflecting the electron doping nature of this chemical substitution. In addition, the spectral linewidth broadens rapidly with increasing $x$, and becomes completely incoherent at the superconducting-insulating boundary. The d-wave-like normal-state gap observed in the lightly underdoped region gradually evolves into a large soft gap, which suppresses antinodal spectral weight linearly in both the excitation energy and temperature. Combining with the bulk resistivity data obtained on the same samples, we establish the emergence of the Coulomb gap behavior in the very underdoped regime. Our results reveal the dual roles, doping and disorder, of off-plane chemical substitutions in high-$T_c$ cuprates and elucidate the nature of the quantum electronic states due to strong correlation and disorder.

Antiferromagnetism-superconductivity competition in electron-doped cuprates triggered by oxygen reduction

We have performed a systematic angle-resolved photoemission study of as-grown and oxygen-reduced Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ and Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_{x}$CuO$_4$ electron-doped cuprates. In contrast to the common belief, neither the band filling nor the band parameters are significantly affected by the oxygen reduction process. Instead, we show that the main electronic role of the reduction process is to remove an anisotropic leading edge gap around the Fermi surface. While the nodal leading edge gap is induced by long-range antiferomagnetic order, the origin of the antinodal one remains unclear.

Universal quasiparticle decoherence in hole- and electron-doped high-Tc cuprates

We use angle-resolved photoemission to unravel the quasiparticle decoherence process in the high-$T_c$ cuprates. The coherent band is highly renormalized, and the incoherent part manifests itself as a nearly vertical ``dive'' in the $E$-$k$ intensity plot that approaches the bare band bottom. We find that the coherence-incoherence crossover energies in the hole- and electron-doped cuprates are quite different, but scale to their corresponding bare bandwidth. This rules out antiferromagnetic fluctuations as the main source for decoherence. We also observe the coherent band bottom at the zone center, whose intensity is strongly suppressed by the decoherence process. Consequently, the coherent band dispersion for both hole- and electron-doped cuprates is obtained, and is qualitatively consistent with the framework of Gutzwiller projection.

Unusual photoemission resonances of oxygen-dopant induced states in Bi$_{2}$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$

We have performed an angular-resolved photoemission study of underdoped, optimally doped and overdoped Bi$_{2}$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$ samples using a wide photon energy range (15 - 100 eV). We report a small and broad non-dispersive A$_{1g}$ peak in the energy distribution curves whose intensity scales with doping. We attribute it to a local impurity state similar to the one observed recently by scanning tunneling spectroscopy and identified as the oxygen dopants. Detailed analysis of the resonance profile and comparison with the single-layered Bi$_{2}$Sr$_2$CuO$_{6+x}$ suggest a mixing of this local state with Cu via the apical oxygens.

Fine Details of the Nodal Electronic Excitations in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$

Very high energy resolution photoemission experiments on high quality samples of optimally doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ show new features in the low-energy electronic excitations. A marked change in the binding energy and temperature dependence of the near-nodal scattering rates is observed near the superconducting transition temperature, $T_C$. The temperature slope of the scattering rate measured at low energy shows a discontinuity at ~$T_C$. In the superconducting state, coherent excitations are found with the scattering rates showing a cubic dependence on frequency and temperature. The superconducting gap has a d-wave magnitude with negligible contribution from higher harmonics. Further, the bi-layer splitting has been found to be finite at the nodal point.

Doping dependent charge injection and band alignment in organic field-effect transistors

We have studied metal/organic semiconductor charge injection in poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) field-effect transistors with Pt and Au electrodes as a function of annealing in vacuum. At low impurity dopant densities, Au/P3HT contact resistances increase and become nonohmic. In contrast, Pt/P3HT contacts remain ohmic even at far lower doping. Ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) reveals that metal/P3HT band alignment shifts dramatically as samples are dedoped, leading to an increased injection barrier for holes, with a greater shift for Au/P3HT. These results demonstrate that doping can drastically alter band alignment and the charge injection process at metal/organic interfaces.

Doping evolution of chemical potential, spin-correlation gap, and charge dynamics in Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$

We report optical reflectivity study on Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ over a broad doping range 0$\leq x\leq$0.20. The study reveals a systematic shift of chemical potential with doping. A pronounced peak structure specific to the electron-doped cuprate is observed in optical scattering rate based on the extended Drude model analysis. The energy scale of the peak could be very different from that of the peak in conductivity spectrum. We clarify that the "hot spots" gap probed in photoemission experiments correlates directly with the sharp suppression feature in scattering rate rather than conductivity spectra. The gap is associated with the short-range antiferromagnetic correlation, and disappears in a manner of fading away with increasing doping and temperature. In the heavily overdoped region, a dominant $ω^2$-dependence of the scattering rate is identified up to very high energy.

Fermi surface evolution and Luttinger theorem in Na$_x$CoO$_2$: a systematic photoemission study

We report a systematic angle-resolved photoemission study on Na$_x$CoO$_2$ for a wide range of Na concentrations ($0.3 \leq x \leq 0.72$). In all the metallic samples at different $x$, we observed (i) only a single hole-like Fermi surface centered around $Γ$ and (ii) its area changes with $x$ according to the Luttinger theorem. We also observed a surface state that exhibits a larger Fermi surface area. The $e_g^\prime$ band and the associated small Fermi surface pockets near the $K$ points predicted by band calculations are found to ``sink'' below the Fermi energy in a manner almost independent of the doping and temperature.

Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy of the Antiferromagnetic Superconductor Nd1.87Ce0.13CuO4: Anisotropic Spin-Correlation Gap, Pseudogap, and the Induced Quasiparticle Mass Enhancement

We performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on Nd1.87Ce0.13CuO4, which is located at the boundary of the antiferromagnetic (AF) and the superconducting phase. We observed that the quasiparticle (QP) effective mass around (pi, 0) is strongly enhanced due to the opening of the AF gap. The QP mass and the AF gap are found to be anisotropic, with the largest value near the intersecting point of the Fermi surface and the AF zone boundary. In addition, we observed that the QP peak disappears around the Neel temperature (TN) while the AF pseudogap is gradually filled up at much higher temperatures, possibly due to the short-range AF correlation.

Fermi surface topology of Ca_{1.5}Sr_{0.5}RuO_{4} determined by ARPES

We report ARPES results of the Fermi surface of Ca_{1.5}Sr_{0.5}RuO$_{4}, which is at the boundary of magnetic/orbital instability in the phase diagram of the Ca-substituted Sr ruthenates. Three t_{2g} energy bands and the corresponding Fermi surface sheets are observed, which are also present in the Ca-free Sr_{2}RuO$_{4}. We find that while the Fermi surface topology of the alpha, beta (d_{yz, zx}) sheets remains almost the same in these two materials, the gamma (d_{xy}) sheet exhibits a hole-like Fermi surface in Ca_{1.5}Sr_{0.5}RuO_{4} in contrast to being electron-like in Sr_{2}RuO_{4}. Our observation of all three volume conserving Fermi surface sheets clearly demonstrates the absence of orbital-selective Mott transition, which was proposed theoretically to explain the unusual transport and magnetic properties in Ca_{1.5}Sr_{0.5}RuO_{4}.

ARPES on Na$_{0.6}$CoO$_{2}$: Fermi surface, extended flat dispersion, and unusual band splitting

The electronic structure of single crystals Na$_{0.6}$CoO$_2$, which are closely related to the superconducting Na$_{0.3}$CoO$_2$.$y$H$_2$O ($T_c \sim 5K$), is studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. While the measured Fermi surface is found to be consistent with the prediction of a local density band theory, the energy dispersion is highly renormalized, with an anisotropy along the two principle axes ($Γ$-$K$, $Γ$-$M$). Our ARPES result also indicates that an extended flat band is formed slightly above $E_F$ along $Γ$-$K$. In addition, an unusual band splitting is observed in the vicinity of the Fermi surface along the $Γ$-$M$ direction, which differs from the predicted bilayer splitting.

BCS-like Bogoliubov Quasiparticles in High-Tc Superconductors Observed by Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

We performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on triple-layered high-Tc cuprate Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+delta. We have observed the full energy dispersion (electron and hole branches) of Bogoliubov quasiparticles and determined the coherence factors above and below EF as a function of momentum from the spectral intensity as well as from the energy dispersion based on BCS theory. The good quantitative agreement between the experiment and the theoretical prediction suggests the basic validity of BCS formalism in describing the superconducting state of cuprates.

Discovery of microscopic electronic inhomogeneity in the high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x

The parent compounds of the copper oxide high-Tc superconductors are unusual insulators. Superconductivity arises when they are properly doped away from stoichiometry1. In Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x, superconductivity results from doping with excess oxygen atoms, which introduce positive charge carriers (holes) into the CuO2 planes, where superconductivity is believed to originate. The role of these oxygen dopants is not well understood, other than the fact that they provide charge carriers. However, it is not even clear how these charges distribute in the CuO2 planes. Accordingly, many models of high-Tc superconductors simply assume that the charge carriers introduced by doping distribute uniformly, leading to an electronically homogeneous system, as in ordinary metals. Here we report the observation of an electronic inhomogeneity in the high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x using scanning tunnelling microscopy/spectroscopy. This inhomogeneity is manifested as spatial variations in both the local density of states spectrum and the superconducting energy gap. These variations are correlated spatially and vary on a surprisingly short length scale of ~ 14 Angs. Analysis suggests that the inhomogeneity observed is a consequence of proximity to a Mott insulator resulting in poor screening of the charge potentials associated with the oxygen ions left behind in the BiO plane after doping. Hence this experiment is a direct probe of the local nature of the superconducting state, which is not easily accessible by macroscopic measurements.

On the determination of the Fermi surface in high-Tc superconductors by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We study the normal state electronic excitations probed by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in Bi2201 and Bi2212. Our main goal is to establish explicit criteria for determining the Fermi surface from ARPES data on strongly interacting systems where sharply defined quasiparticles do not exist and the dispersion is very weak in parts of the Brillouin zone. Additional complications arise from strong matrix element variations within the zone. We present detailed results as a function of incident photon energy, and show simple experimental tests to distinguish between an intensity drop due to matrix element effects and spectral weight loss due to a Fermi crossing. We reiterate the use of polarization selection rules in disentangling the effect of umklapps due to the BiO superlattice in Bi2212. We conclude that, despite all the complications, the Fermi surface can be determined unambiguously: it is a single large hole barrel centered about (pi,pi) in both materials.

Coherent quasiparticle weight and its connection to high-T_c superconductivity from angle-resolved photoemission

In conventional superconductors, the pairing energy gap (Δ) and superconducting phase coherence go hand-in-hand. As the temperature is lowered, both the energy gap and phase coherence appear at the transition temperature T_c. In contrast, in underdoped high-T_c superconductors (HTSCs), a pseudogap appears at a much higher temperature T^*, smoothly evolving into the superconducting gap at T_c. Phase coherence on the other hand is only established at T_c, signaled by the appearance of a sharp quasiparticle (QP) peak in the excitation spectrum. Another important difference between the two types of superconductors is in the ratio of 2Δ/ T_c=R. In BCS theory, R~3.5, is constant. In the HTSCs this ratio varies widely, continuing to increase in the underdoped region, where the gap increases while T_c decreases. Here we report that in HTSCs it is the ratio z_AΔ_m/T_c which is approximately constant, where Δ_m is the maximum value of the d-wave gap, and z_A is the weight of the coherent excitations in the spectral function. This is highly unusual, since in nearly all phase transitions, T_c is determined by an energy scale alone. We further show that in the low-temperature limit, z_{\it A} increases monotonically with increasing doping x. The growth is linear, i.e. z_A(x)\propto x, in the underdoped to optimally doped regimes, and slows down in overdoped samples. The reduction of z_A with increasing temperature resembles that of the c-axis superfluid density.

Quasiparticles in the superconducting state of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8

Recent improvements in momentum resolution by a factor of 32 lead to qualitatively new ARPES results on the spectra of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) along the (pi,pi) direction, where there is a node in the superconducting gap. With improved resolution, we now see the intrinsic lineshape, which indicates the presence of true quasiparticles at the Fermi momentum in the superconducting state, and lack thereof in the normal state. The region of momentum space probed here is relevant for charge transport, motivating a comparison of our results to conductivity measurements by infrared reflectivity.

Electronic Spectra and Their Relation to the (pi,pi) Collective Mode in High-Tc Superconductors

Photoemission spectra of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 reveal that the high energy feature near (pi,0), the "hump", scales with the superconducting gap and persists above Tc in the pseudogap phase. As the doping decreases, the dispersion of the hump increasingly reflects the wavevector (pi,pi) characteristic of the undoped insulator, despite the presence of a large Fermi surface. This can be understood from the interaction of the electrons with a collective mode, supported by our observation that the doping dependence of the resonance observed by neutron scattering is the same as that inferred from our data.
