Strain amplification of the 4k$_F$ chain charge instability in Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$

We have used resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS) to study the misfit strain in Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ (SCO), a cuprate that contains both doped spin ladders and spin chains, as well as a "control" sample without holes, La$_{6}$Ca$_{8}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ (LCCO). The misfit strain wave in SCO is strongly temperature (T)-dependent and is accompanied by a substantial hole modulation. In LCCO the strain wave is weaker, shows no hole modulation, and is T-independent. The observed strain wave vector, $L_c=0.318$, is close to the 4k$_F$ instability of the chain. Our results indicate that the chain charge order observed in SCO by several groups is a 4k$_F$ charge density wave (CDW) amplified by the misfit strain in this material. This demonstrates a new mechanism for CDW formation in condensed matter and resolves several contraversies over the transport properties of SCO.

Low-Energy Electronic Structure of the High-Tc Cuprates La2-xSrxCuO4 Studied by Angle-resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

We have performed a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of the high-Tc cuprates La2-xSrxCuO4, ranging from the underdoped insulator to the superconductor to the overdoped metal. We have revealed a systematic doping evolution of the band dispersions and (underlying) Fermi surfaces, pseudogap and quasi-particle features under the influence of strong electron-electron interaction and electron-phonon interaction. The unusual transport and thermodynamic properties are explained by taking into account the pseudogap opening and the Fermi arc formation, due to which the carrier number decreases as the doped hole concentration decreases.

Enhancement of electronic inhomogeneities due to out-of-plane disorder in Bi_2Sr_2CuO_{6+delta} superconductors observed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy

Nanoscale electronic inhomogeneity in optimally doped single-layer Bi_2Sr_{1.6}L_{0.4}CuO_{6+delta}, (L-Bi2201, L=La and Gd) as well as bilayer Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+delta} (Bi2212), superconductors has been investigated by the low-temperature scanning-tunneling-microscopy and spectroscopy. The inhomogeneous gap structures are observed above and below Tc on Gd-Bi2201. Increasing the out-of-plane disorder which is controlled by mismatch of the ionic radius between Sr and Ln results in the enhancement of pseudogap region with suppressed coherence peaks in the conductance spectrum, making the gap average larger and the gap distribution wider. The degree of electronic inhomogeneity measured by the distribution width of the gap amplitude is shown to have a correlation with Tc in optimally doped Bi2201 and Bi2212.

Interplay of electron-lattice interactions and superconductivity in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d

Formation of electron pairs is essential to superconductivity. For conventional superconductors, tunnelling spectroscopy has established that pairing is mediated by bosonic modes (phonons); a peak in the second derivative of tunnel current d2I/dV2 corresponds to each phonon mode . For high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) superconductivity, however, no boson mediating electron pairing has been identified. One explanation could be that electron pair formation and related electron-boson interactions are heterogeneous at the atomic scale and therefore challenging to characterize. However, with the latest advances in d2I/dV2 spectroscopy using scanning tunnelling microscopy, it has become possible to study bosonic modes directly at the atomic scale . Here we report d2I/dV2 imaging studies of the high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d. We find intense disorder of electron-boson interaction energies at the nanometre scale, along with the expected modulations in d2I/dV2 (refs 9,10). Changing the density of holes has minimal effects on both the average mode energies and the modulations, indicating that the bosonic modes are unrelated to electronic or magnetic structure. Instead, the modes appear to be local lattice vibrations, as substitution of 18O for 16O throughout the material reduces the average mode energy by approximately 6 per cent - the expected effect of this isotope substitution on lattice vibration frequencies. Significantly, the mode energies are always spatially anticorrelated with the superconducting pairing-gap energies, suggesting an interplay between these lattice vibration modes and the superconductivity.

High-energy scale revival and giant kink in the dispersion of a cuprate superconductor

In the present photoemission study of a cuprate superconductor Bi1.74Pb0.38Sr1.88CuO6+delta, we discovered a large scale dispersion of the lowest band, which unexpectedly follows the band structure calculation very well. The incoherent nature of the spectra suggests that the hopping-dominated dispersion occurs possibly with the assistance of local spin correlations. A giant kink in the dispersion is observed, and the complete self-energy containing all interaction information is extracted for a doped cuprate in the low energy region. These results recovered significant missing pieces in our current understanding of the electronic structure of cuprates.

Elastic Scattering Susceptibility of the High Temperature Superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x: A Comparison between Real and Momentum Space Photoemission Spectroscopies

The joint density of states (JDOS) of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x is calculated by evaluating the autocorrelation of the single particle spectral function A(k,omega) measured from angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). These results are compared with Fourier transformed (FT) conductance modulations measured by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Good agreement between the two experimental probes is found for two different doping values examined. In addition, by comparing the FT-STM results to the autocorrelated ARPES spectra with different photon polarization, new insight on the form of the STM matrix elements is obtained. This shines new light on unsolved mysteries in the tunneling data.

Experimental evidence of paired hole states in model high-$T_c$ compounds

The distribution of holes in Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_x$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ (SCCO) is revisited with semi-emperical reanalysis of the x-ray absorption (XAS) data and exact-diagonalized cluster calculations. A new interpretation of the XAS data leads to much larger ladder hole densities than previously suggested. These new hole densities lead to a simple interpretation of the hole crystal (HC) recently reported with 1/3 and 1/5 wave vectors along the ladder. Our interpretation is consistent with paired holes in the rung of the ladders. Exact diagonalization results for a minimal model of the doped ladders suggest that the stabilization of spin structures consisting of 4 spins in a square plaquette as a result of resonance valence bond (RVB) physics suppresses the hole crystal with a 1/4 wave vector.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of perovskite-type transition-metal oxides and their analyses using tight-binding band structure

Nowadays it has become feasible to perform angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of transition-metal oxides with three-dimensional perovskite structures owing to the availability of high-quality single crystals of bulk and epitaxial thin films. In this article, we review recent experimental results and interpretation of ARPES data using empirical tight-binding band-structure calculations. Results are presented for SrVO$_3$ (SVO) bulk single crystals, and La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$FeO$_3$ (LSFO) and La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) thin films. In the case of SVO, from comparison of the experimental results with calculated surface electronic structure, we concluded that the obtained band dispersions reflect the bulk electronic structure. The experimental band structures of LSFO and LSMO were analyzed assuming the G-type antiferromagnetic state and the ferromagnetic state, respectively. We also demonstrated that the intrinsic uncertainty of the electron momentum perpendicular to the crystal surface is important for the interpretation of the ARPES results of three-dimensional materials.

Doping dependence of the coupling of electrons to bosonic modes in the single-layer high-temperature Bi2Sr2CuO6 superconductor

A recent highlight in the study of high-Tc superconductors is the observation of band renormalization / self-energy effects on the quasiparticles. This is seen in the form of kinks in the quasiparticle dispersions as measured by photoemission and interpreted as signatures of collective bosonic modes coupling to the electrons. Here we compare for the first time the self-energies in an optimally doped and strongly overdoped, non-superconducting single-layer Bi-cuprate (Bi2Sr2CuO6). Besides the appearance of a strong overall weakening, we also find that weight of the self-energy in the overdoped system shifts to higher energies. We present evidence that this is related to a change in the coupling to c-axis phonons due to the rapid change of the c-axis screening in this doping range.

Normal state electronic structure in the heavily overdoped regime of Bi1.74Pb0.38Sr1.88CuO6+delta single-layer cuprate superconductors

We explore the electronic structure in the heavily overdoped regime of the single layer cuprate superconductor Bi1.74Pb0.38Sr1.88CuO6+delta. We found that the nodal quasiparticle behavior is dominated mostly by phonons, while the antinodal quasiparticle lineshape is dominated by spin fluctuations. Moreover, while long range spin fluctuations diminish at very high doping, the local magnetic fluctuations still dominate the quasiparticle dispersion, and the system exhibits a strange metal behavior in the entire overdoped regime.

Quantum melting of the hole crystal in the spin ladder of Sr14-xCaxCu24O41

The "spin ladder" is a reduced-dimensional analogue of the high temperature superconductors that was predicted to exhibit both superconductivity and an electronic charge density wave or "hole crystal" (HC). Both phenomena have been observed in the doped spin ladder system Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 (SCCO), which at x=0 exhibits a HC which is commensurate at all temperatures. To investigate the effects of discommensuration we used resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS) to study SCCO as a function of doped hole density, d. The HC forms only with the commensurate wave vectors L_L = 1/5 and L_L = 1/3 and exhibits a simple temperature scaling T_(1/3) / T_(1/5) = 5/3. For irrational wave vectors the HC "melts", perhaps through the motion of topological defects carrying fractional charge.

Doping Evolution of the Underlying Fermi Surface in La2-xSrxCuO4

We have performed a systematic doping dependent study of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) (0.03$\leq x \leq$0.3) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. In the entire doping range, the underlying ``Fermi surface" determined from the low energy spectral weight approximately satisfies Luttinger's theorem, even down to the lightly-doped region. This is in strong contrast to the result on Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_x$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ (Na-CCOC), which shows a strong deviation from Luttinger's theorem. The differences between LSCO and Na-CCOC are correlated with the different behaviors of the chemical potential shift and spectral weight transfer induced by hole doping.

Muon Spin Relaxation Studies of Magnetic-Field-Induced Effects in High-$T_{c}$ Superconductors

Muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements in high transverse magnetic fields ($\parallel \hat c$) revealed strong field-induced quasi-static magnetism in the underdoped and Eu doped (La,Sr)$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$ and La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$, existing well above $T_{c}$ and $T_{N}$. The susceptibility-counterpart of Cu spin polarization, derived from the muon spin relaxation rate, exhibits a divergent behavior towards $T \sim 25$ K. No field-induced magnetism was detected in overdoped La$_{1.81}$Sr$_{0.19}$CuO$_{4}$, optimally doped Bi2212, and Zn-doped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$.

Effect of disorder outside the CuO$_{2}$ planes on $T_{c}$ of copper oxide superconductors

The effect of disorder on the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ of cuprate superconductors is examined. Disorder is introduced into the cation sites in the plane adjacent to the CuO$_{2}$ planes of two single-layer systems, Bi$_{2.0}$Sr$_{1.6}$Ln$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ and La$_{1.85-y}$Nd$_{y}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4}$. Disorder is controlled by changing rare earth (Ln) ions with different ionic radius in the former, and by varying the Nd content in the latter with the doped carrier density kept constant. We show that this type of disorder works as weak scatterers in contrast to the in-plane disorder produced by Zn, but remarkably reduces $T_{c}$ suggesting novel effects of disorder on high-$T_{c}$ superconductivity.

Laser ARPES, the sudden approximation, and quasiparticle-like peaks in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta

A new low photon energy regime of angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy is accessed with lasers and used to study the superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. The low energy increases bulk sensitivity, reduces background, and improves resolution. With this we observe spectral peaks which are sharp on the scale of their binding energy - the clearest evidence yet for quasiparticles in the normal state. Crucial aspects of the data such as the dispersion, superconducting gaps, and the bosonic coupling kink and associated weight transfer are robust to a possible breakdown of the sudden approximation.

Multiple Bosonic Mode Coupling in Electron Self-Energy of (La_2-xSr_x)CuO_4

High resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data along the (0,0)-($π$,$π$) nodal direction with significantly improved statistics reveal fine structure in the electron self-energy of the underdoped (La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$)CuO$_4$ samples in the normal state. Fine structure at energies of (40$\sim$46) meV and (58$\sim$63)meV, and possible fine structure at energies of (23$\sim$29)meV and (75$\sim$85)meV, have been identified. These observations indicate that, in LSCO, more than one bosonic modes are involved in the coupling with electrons.

Direct observation of the mass renormalization in SrVO$_3$ by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study of the three-dimensional perovskite-type SrVO$_3$. Observed spectral weight distribution of the coherent part in the momentum space shows cylindrical Fermi surfaces consisting of the V 3$d$ $t_{2g}$ orbitals as predicted by local-density-approximation (LDA) band-structure calculation. The observed energy dispersion shows a moderately enhanced effective mass compared to the LDA results, corresponding to the effective mass enhancement seen in the thermodynamic properties. Contributions from the bulk and surface electronic structures to the observed spectra are discussed based on model calculations.

Hole crystallization in the spin ladder of Sr14Cu24O41

One of the deepest questions in condensed matter physics concerns what other phases compete with superconductivity in high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) superconductors. One candidate is the "stripe" phase, in which the carriers (holes) condense into rivers of charge separating regions of antiferromagnetism. A related but lesser known system is the "spin ladder", which consists of two coupled chains of magnetic ions forming an array of rungs. A doped ladder can be thought of as a high-Tc material with lower dimensionality, and has been predicted to exhibit both superconductivity and an insulating "hole crystal" phase in which the carriers are localised through many-body interactions. The competition between the two resembles that between static stripes and superconductivity in high-Tc materials. Here we report evidence, from resonant x-ray scattering, for the existence of a hole crystal in the doped spin ladder of Sr14Cu24O41. This phase exists without a detectable distortion in the structural lattice, indicating it arises from many-body effects. Our measurements confirm theoretical predictions and support the picture that proximity to charge ordered states is a general property of superconductivity in copper-oxides.
