Rapidity and centrality dependence of particle production for identified hadrons in Cu+Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV

The BRAHMS collaboration has measured transverse momentum spectra of pions, kaons, protons and antiprotons at rapidities 0 and 3 for Cu+Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV. As the collisions become more central the collective radial flow increases while the temperature of kinetic freeze-out decreases. The temperature is lower and the radial flow weaker at forward rapidity. Pion and kaon yields with transverse momenta between 1.5 and 2.5 GeV/c are suppressed for central collisions relative to scaled $p+p$ collisions. This suppression, which increases as the collisions become more central is consistent with jet quenching models and is also present with comparable magnitude at forward rapidity. At such rapidities initial state effects may also be present and persistence of the meson suppression to high rapidity may reflect a combination of jet quenching and nuclear shadowing. The ratio of protons to mesons increases as the collisions become more central and is largest at forward rapidities.

Abstract Swiss Cheese Space and the Classicalisation of Swiss Cheeses

Swiss cheese sets are compact subsets of the complex plane obtained by deleting a sequence of open disks from a closed disk. Such sets have provided numerous counterexamples in the theory of uniform algebras. In this paper, we introduce a topological space whose elements are what we call "abstract Swiss cheeses". Working within this topological space, we show how to prove the existence of "classical" Swiss cheese sets (as discussed in a paper of Feinstein and Heath from 2010) with various desired properties. We first give a new proof of the Feinstein-Heath classicalisation theorem. We then consider when it is possible to "classicalise" a Swiss cheese while leaving disks which lie outside a given region unchanged. We also consider sets obtained by deleting a sequence of open disks from a closed annulus, and we obtain an analogue of the Feinstein-Heath theorem for these sets. We then discuss regularity for certain uniform algebras. We conclude with an application of these techniques to obtain a classical Swiss cheese set which has the same properties as a non-classical example of O'Farrell (1979).

Spin-flop transition and magnetic phase diagram in CaCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$ revealed by torque measurements

The magnetic properties of CaCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystal was systematically studied by using dc magnetization and magnetic torque measurements. A paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition occurs at $T_N$ = 74 K with Co spins being aligned parallel to the c axis. For $H \parallel c$, a field-induced spin-flop transition was observed below $T_N$ and a magnetic transition from antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic was inferred from the detailed analysis of magnetization and magnetic torque. Finally, we summarize the magnetic phase diagram of CaCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$ based on our results in the \emph{H-T} plane.

A note on robust preconditioners for monolithic fluid-structure interaction systems of finite element equations

In this note, we consider preconditioned Krylov subspace methods for discrete fluid-structure interaction problems with a nonlinear hyperelastic material model and covering a large range of flows, e.g, water, blood, and air with highly varying density. Based on the complete $LDU$ factorization of the coupled system matrix, the preconditioner is constructed in form of $\hat{L}\hat{D}\hat{U}$, where $\hat{L}$, $\hat{D}$ and $\hat{U}$ are proper approximations to $L$, $D$ and $U$, respectively. The inverse of the corresponding Schur complement is approximated by applying one cycle of a special class of algebraic multigrid methods to the perturbed fluid sub-problem, that is obtained by modifying corresponding entries in the original fluid matrix with an explicitly constructed approximation of the exact perturbation coming from the sparse matrix-matrix multiplications.

Swiss Cheeses and Their Applications

Swiss cheese sets have been used in the literature as useful examples in the study of rational approximation and uniform algebras. In this paper, we give a survey of Swiss cheese constructions and related results. We describe some notable examples of Swiss cheese sets in the literature. We explain the various abstract notions of Swiss cheeses, and how they can be manipulated to obtain desirable properties. In particular, we discuss the Feinstein-Heath classicalisation theorem and related results. We conclude with the construction of a new counterexample to a conjecture of S. E. Morris, using a classical Swiss cheese set.

Heterostructures produced from nanosheet-based inks

The new paradigm of heterostructures based on two-dimensional (2D) atomic crystals has already led to the observation of exciting physical phenomena and creation of novel devices. The possibility of combining layers of different 2D materials in one stack allows unprecedented control over the electronic and optical properties of the resulting material. Still, the current method of mechanical transfer of individual 2D crystals, though allowing exceptional control over the quality of such structures and interfaces, is not scalable. Here we show that such heterostructures can be assembled from chemically exfoliated 2D crystals, allowing for low-cost and scalable methods to be used in the device fabrication.

Electron Spin Dephasing and Optical Pumping of Nuclear Spins in GaN

We have measured the donor-bound electron spin dynamics in cubic GaN by time-resolved Kerr rotation experiments. The ensemble electron spin dephasing time in this quantum dot like system characterized by a Bohr radius of 2.5 nm is of the order of 1.5 ns as a result of the interaction with the fluctuating nuclear spins. It increases drastically when an external magnetic field as small as 10 mT is applied. We extract a dispersion of the nuclear hyperfine field δBn $\sim$ 4 mT, in agreement with calculations. We also demonstrate for the first time in GaN based systems the optical pumping of nuclear spin yielding the build-up of a significant nuclear polarization.

Large and robust electrical spin injection into GaAs at zero magnetic field using an ultrathin CoFeB/MgO injector

We demonstrate a large electrical spin injection into GaAs at zero magnetic field thanks to an ultrathin perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB contact of a few atomic planes (1.2 nm). The spin-polarization of electrons injected into GaAs was examined by the circular polarization of electroluminescence from a Spin Light Emitting Diode with embedded InGaAs/GaAs quantum wells. The electroluminescence polarization as a function of the magnetic field closely traces the out-of-plane magnetization of the CoFeB/MgO injector. A circular polarization degree of the emitted light as large as 20% at 25 K is achieved at zero magnetic field. Moreover the electroluminescence circular polarization is still about 8% at room temperature.

Surface atomic diffusion processes observed at milliseconds time resolution using environmental TEM

Significant progress has been made in spatial resolution using environmental transmission electron microscopes (ETEM), which now enables atomic resolution visualization of structural transformation under variable temperature and gas environments close to materials real operational conditions. Structural transformations are observed by recording images or diffraction patterns at various time intervals using a video camera or by taking snap shots using electron pulses. While time resolution at 15 ns has been reported using pulsed electron beams, the time interval that can be recorded by this technique is currently very limited. For longer recording, however, time resolution inside ETEM has been limited by electron cameras to ~1/30 seconds for a long time. Using the recently developed direct electron detection technology, we have significantly improved the time resolution of ETEM to 2.5 ms (milliseconds) for full frame or 0.625 ms for 0.25 frames.

Absence of structural transition in TM0.5IrTe2 (TM=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni)

TM-doped IrTe2(TM=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) compounds were synthesized by solid state reaction. Single crystal x-ray diffraction experiments indicate that part of the doped TM ions (TM=Fe, Co, and Ni) substitute for Ir, and the rest intercalate into the octahedral interstitial sites located in between IrTe2 layers. Due to the lattice mismatch between MnTe2 and IrTe2, Mn has limited solubility in IrTe2 lattice. The trigonal structure is stable in the whole temperature range 1.80<T<300K for all doped compositions. No long range magnetic order or superconductivity was observed in any doped compositions above 1.80K. A spin glass behavior below 10K was observed in Fe-doped IrTe2 from the temperature dependence of magnetization, electrical resistivity, and specific heat. The low temperature specific heat data suggest the electron density of states is enhanced in Fe- and Co-doped compositions but reduced in Ni-doped IrTe2. With the 3d transition metal doping the trigonal a-lattice parameters increases but the c-lattice parameter decreases. Detailed analysis of the single crystal x-ray diffraction data shows that interlayer Te-Te distance increases despite a reduced c-lattice. The importance of the Te-Te, Te-Ir, and Ir-Ir bonding is discussed.

Interfacial Ferromagnetism in LaNiO3/CaMnO3 Superlattices

We observe interfacial ferromagnetism in superlattices of the paramagnetic metal LaNiO3 and the antiferromagnetic insulator CaMnO3. LaNiO3 exhibits a thickness dependent metal-insulator transition and we find the emergence of ferromagnetism to be coincident with the conducting state of LaNiO3. That is, only superlattices in which the LaNiO3 layers are metallic exhibit ferromagnetism. Using several magnetic probes, we have determined that the ferromagnetism arises in a single unit cell of CaMnO3 at the interface. Together these results suggest that ferromagnetism can be attributed to a double exchange interaction among Mn ions mediated by the adjacent itinerant metal.

A simple and efficient all-optical production of spinor condensates

We present a simple and optimal experimental scheme for an all-optical production of a sodium spinor Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). With this scheme, we demonstrate that the number of atoms in a pure BEC can be greatly boosted by a factor of 5 in a simple setup that includes a single-beam optical trap or a crossed optical trap. This optimal scheme avoids technical challenges associated with some all-optical BEC methods, and can be applied to other optically trappable atomic species. In addition, we find a good agreement between our theoretical model and data. The upper limit for the efficiency of evaporative cooling in all-optical BEC approaches is also discussed.

Measurement of the Neutron-Proton and Neutron-Carbon Total Cross Section from 150 to 800 keV

There have been very few measurements of the total cross section for np scattering below 500 keV. In order to differentiate among NN potential models, improved cross section data between 20 and 600 keV are required. We measured the np and nC total cross sections in this energy region by transmission; a collimated neutron beam was passed through CH2 and C samples and transmitted neutrons were detected by a BC-501A liquid scintillator. Cross sections were obtained with a precision of 1.1-2.0% between 150 and 800 keV using ratios of normalized neutron yields measured with and without the scattering samples in the beam. In energy regions where they overlap, the present results are consistent with existing precision measurements, and fill in a significant gap in the data between En = 150 and 500 keV.

Conduction mechanisms of epitaxial EuTiO3 thin films

To investigate leakage current density versus electric field characteristics, epitaxial EuTiO3 thin films were deposited on (001) SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition and were post-annealed in a reducing atmosphere. This investigation found that conduction mechanisms are strongly related to temperature and voltage polarity. It was determined that from 50 to 150 K the dominant conduction mechanism was a space-charge-limited current under both negative and positive biases. From 200 to 300 K, the conduction mechanism shows Schottky emission and Fowler-Nordheim tunneling behaviors for the negative and positive biases, respectively. This work demonstrates that Eu3+ is one source of leakage current in EuTiO3 thin films.

Intrinsic Percolative Superconductivity in KxFe2-ySe2 Single Crystals

Magnetic field penetration and magnetization hysteresis loops (MHLs) have been measured in KxFe2-ySe2 single crystals. The magnetic field penetration shows a two-step feature with a very small full-magnetic-penetration field (Hp1= 300 Oe at 2 K), and accordingly the MHL exhibits an abnormal vanishing of the central peak near zero field below 13 K. The width of the MHL in KxFe2-ySe2 at the same temperature is in general much smaller than that measured in the relatives Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 and Ba(Fe0.92Co0.08)2As2, and the MHLs in the latter two samples show the normal central peak near zero field. All these anomalies found in KxFe2-ySe2 can be understood in the picture that the sample is percolative with weakly coupled superconducting islands.

Non-monotonic temperature dependent transport in graphene grown by Chemical Vapor Deposition

Temperature-dependent resistivity of graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is investigated. We observe in low mobility CVD graphene device a strong insulating behavior at low temperatures and a metallic behavior at high temperatures manifesting a non-monotonic in the temperature dependent resistivity. This feature is strongly affected by carrier density modulation. To understand this anomalous temperature dependence, we introduce thermal activation of charge carriers in electron-hole puddles induced by randomly distributed charged impurities. Observed temperature evolution of resistivity is then understood from the competition among thermal activation of charge carriers, temperature-dependent screening and phonon scattering effects. Our results imply that the transport property of transferred CVD-grown graphene is strongly influenced by the details of the environment

Rapidity dependence of deuteron production in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV

We have measured the distributions of protons and deuterons produced in high energy heavy ion Au+Au collisions at RHIC over a very wide range of transverse and longitudinal momentum. Near mid-rapidity we have also measured the distribution of anti-protons and anti-deuterons. We present our results in the context of coalescence models. In particular we extract the "volume of homogeneity" and the average phase-space density for protons and anti-protons. Near central rapidity the coalescence parameter $B_2(p_T)$ and the space averaged phase-space density $ (p_T)$ are very similar for both protons and anti-protons. For protons we see little variation of either $B_2(p_T)$ or the space averaged phase-space density as the rapidity increases from 0 to 3. However both these quantities depend strongly on $p_T$ at all rapidities. These results are in contrast to lower energy data where the proton and anti-proton phase-space densities are different at $y$=0 and both $B_2$ and $f$ depend strongly on rapidity.

Streamlined Calibrations of the ATLAS Precision Muon Chambers for Initial LHC Running

The ATLAS Muon Spectrometer is designed to measure the momentum of muons with a resolution of dp/p = 3% and 10% at 100 GeV and 1 TeV momentum respectively. For this task, the spectrometer employs 355,000 Monitored Drift Tubes (MDTs) arrayed in 1200 Chambers. Calibration (RT) functions convert drift time measurements into tube-centered impact parameters for track segment reconstruction. RT functions depend on MDT environmental parameters and so must be appropriately calibrated for local chamber conditions. We report on the creation and application of a gas monitor system based calibration program for muon track reconstruction in the LHC startup phase.
