Dynamical axion state with hidden pseudospin Chern numbers in MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$-based heterostructures

Axion is a hypothetical elementary particle which was initially postulated to solve the charge conjugation-parity problem in particle physics. Interestingly, the axion state has emerged in effective theory of topological insulators and has attracted extensive attention in condensed matter physics. Time-reversal or inversion symmetry constrains the axion field $θ$ to be quantized. When both the time-reversal and inversion symmetries are broken by, say, an antiferromagnetic order, the axion field $θ$ could become unquantized and dynamical along with magnetic fluctuations, which is termed the dynamical axion field. Here, we reveal that a wide class of topological-insulator-based dynamical axion states could be distinguished from the normal-insulator-based ones by a hidden quantity derived from the pseudospin Chern number. Motivated by recent research on MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$-family materials, we further show that such topological-insulator-based dynamical axion states can be hopefully achieved in MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$-based heterostructures, which should greatly facilitate the study of axion electrodynamics in condensed matter physics.

PAPR Reduction Using Iterative Clipping/Filtering and ADMM Approaches for OFDM-Based Mixed-Numerology Systems

Mixed-numerology transmission is proposed to support a variety of communication scenarios with diverse requirements. However, as the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) remains as the basic waveform, the peak-to average power ratio (PAPR) problem is still cumbersome. In this paper, based on the iterative clipping and filtering (ICF) and optimization methods, we investigate the PAPR reduction in the mixed-numerology systems. We first illustrate that the direct extension of classical ICF brings about the accumulation of inter-numerology interference (INI) due to the repeated execution. By exploiting the clipping noise rather than the clipped signal, the noise-shaped ICF (NS-ICF) method is then proposed without increasing the INI. Next, we address the in-band distortion minimization problem subject to the PAPR constraint. By reformulation, the resulting model is separable in both the objective function and the constraints, and well suited for the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) approach. The ADMM-based algorithms are then developed to split the original problem into several subproblems which can be easily solved with closed-form solutions. Furthermore, the applications of the proposed PAPR reduction methods combined with filtering and windowing techniques are also shown to be effective.

Computation Resource Leasing for Priority Aggregation Local Computing Network

In large scale smart edge networks, computation resource is generally underutilized due to the uneven distribution of computation resource in time and space domain. This may correspond to a simple fact that no device is capable for 'storing' and 'exchanging' idle computation resource. Thus, this paper proposes a computation resource leasing (CRL) concept using priority as an intermediary to restore and exchange the permission for computation resource for priority aggregation local computing network (PALCN). Each device in PALNC is able to gain priority as a reward for leasing its computing resource to others. CRL also offers a priority oriented algorithm to match the computation request with idle source nodes and a priority management model. Our analysis and numerical results show that the system can efficiently utilize local idle computation sources over time and space domain and filtrate the big task that local computation can not finish.

Intrinsic magnetic topological insulator phases in the Sb doped MnBi2Te4 bulks and thin flakes

Magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) offer a combination of topologically nontrivial characteristics and magnetic order and show promise in terms of potentially interesting physical phenomena such as the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect and topological axion insulating states. However, the understanding of their properties and potential applications have been limited due to a lack of suitable candidates for MTIs. Here, we grow two-dimensional single crystals of Mn(SbxBi(1-x))2Te4 bulk and exfoliate them into thin flakes in order to search for intrinsic MTIs. We perform angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, low-temperature transport measurements, and first-principles calculations to investigate the band structure, transport properties, and magnetism of this family of materials, as well as the evolution of their topological properties. We find that there exists an optimized MTI zone in the Mn(SbxBi(1-x))2Te4 phase diagram, which could possibly host a high-temperature QAH phase, offering a promising avenue for new device applications.

A Coarse-to-Fine Multi-stream Hybrid Deraining Network for Single Image Deraining

Single image deraining task is still a very challenging task due to its ill-posed nature in reality. Recently, researchers have tried to fix this issue by training the CNN-based end-to-end models, but they still cannot extract the negative rain streaks from rainy images precisely, which usually leads to an over de-rained or under de-rained result. To handle this issue, this paper proposes a new coarse-to-fine single image deraining framework termed Multi-stream Hybrid Deraining Network (shortly, MH-DerainNet). To obtain the negative rain streaks during training process more accurately, we present a new module named dual path residual dense block, i.e., Residual path and Dense path. The Residual path is used to reuse com-mon features from the previous layers while the Dense path can explore new features. In addition, to concatenate different scaled features, we also apply the idea of multi-stream with shortcuts between cascaded dual path residual dense block based streams. To obtain more distinct derained images, we combine the SSIM loss and perceptual loss to preserve the per-pixel similarity as well as preserving the global structures so that the deraining result is more accurate. Extensive experi-ments on both synthetic and real rainy images demonstrate that our MH-DerainNet can deliver significant improvements over several recent state-of-the-art methods.

Topological axion states in magnetic insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ with the quantized magnetoelectric effect

Topological states of quantum matter have attracted great attention in condensed matter physics and materials science. The study of time-reversal-invariant (TRI) topological states in quantum materials has made tremendous progress in both theories and experiments. As a great success, thousands of TRI topological materials are predicted through sweeping search. Richer exotic phenomena are expected to appear in magnetic topological materials because of varied magnetic configurations, but this study falls much behind due to the complex magnetic structures and transitions. Here, we predict the tetradymite-type compound MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and its related materials host interesting magnetic topological states. The magnetic ground state of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is an antiferromagnetic phase which leads to an antiferromagetic topological insulator state with a large topologically non-trivial energy gap ($\sim$0.2~eV). It is the parent state for the axion state, which has gapped bulk and surface states, and quantized topological magnetoelectric effect. The ferromagnetic phase of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ leads to an ideal minimal type-II Weyl semimetal with two Weyl points accompanied by one hole-type and one electron-type Fermi pocket at the Fermi level, which has never been discovered elsewhere. We further present a simple and unified continuum model to capture the salient topological features of this kind of materials.

Experimental observation of the gate-controlled reversal of the anomalous Hall effect in the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 device

Here we report the reserved anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the 5-septuple-layer van der Waals device of the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4. By employing the top/bottom gate, a negative AHE loop gradually decreases to zero and changes to a reversed sign. The reversed AHE exhibits distinct coercive fields and temperature dependence from the previous AHE. It reaches the maximum inside the gap of the Dirac cone. The newly-seen reversed AHE is attributed to the competition of the intrinsic Berry curvature and the Dirac-gap enhanced extrinsic skew scattering. Its gate-controlled switching contributes a scheme for the topological spin field-effect transistors.

Non-Hermitian nodal-line semimetals with an anomalous bulk-boundary correspondence

Recently, topological quantum states of non-Hermitian systems, exhibiting rich new exotic states, have attracted great attention in condensed-matter physics. As for the demonstration, most of non-Hermitian topological phenomena previously focused on are in one- and two-dimensional systems. Here, we investigate three-dimensional non-Hermitian nodal-line semimetals in the presence of a particle gain-and-loss perturbation. It is found that this perturbation will split the original nodal ring into two exceptional rings (ERs). The topological nature of the bulk electronic structure is characterized by two different topological invariants, namely, the vorticity and the winding number defined for a one-dimensional loop in momentum space, both of which are shown to take half-integer (integer) values when an odd (even) number of ERs thread through the loop. The conventional bulk-surface correspondence in non-Hermitian nodal-line semimetals is found to break down, where the surface zero-energy flat bands are no longer bounded by projections of bulk ERs. Alternatively, a macroscopic fraction of the bulk eigenstates can be localized near the surface, thus leading to the so-called non-Hermitian skin effect.

Coexistence of Intrinsic Superconductivity and Topological Insulator State in Monoclinic Phase WS2

Recently, intriguing phenomena of superconductivity, type-II Weyl semimetal or quantum spin Hall states were discovered in metastable 1T'-type VIB-group transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Here, we report that monoclinic phase WS2 was discovered and synthesized in our experiments. The intrinsic superconducting transition was observed in monoclinic WS2 with a transition temperature Tc of 8.8 K which is the highest among previously reported TMDs without any fine-tuning process. Intersteing, topological insulator state, defined by topological invariant Z2, was also discovered with a single Dirac cone on the surface, which is different from all topological states reported in TMDs. Further, the electronic structure was found to have a strong anisotropy by Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations and first-principles calculations. Our findings reveal that monoclinic WS2 might be a new topological superconductivity candidate with a strong anisotropy.

First Investigation on the Radiation Field of the Gas-Filled Three-Axis Cylindrical Hohlraum

A novel ignition hohlraum named three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH) is designed for indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion. TACH is a kind of 6 laser entrance holes (LEHs) hohlraum, which is orthogonally jointed of three cylindrical hohlraums. The first experiment on the radiation field of TACH was performed on Shenguang III laser facility. 24 laser beams were elected and injected into 6 LEHs quasi-symmetrically. Total laser energy was about 59 kJ, and the peak radiation temperature reached about 192 eV. Radiation temperature and pinhole images in gas-filled hohlraum are largely identical but with minor differences with those in vacuum hohlraum. All laser energy can be totally delivered into hohlraum in 3 ns duration even without filled gas in the hohlraum of 1.4 mm diameter. Plasma filling cannot be obviously suppressed even with 0.5 atm pressure gas in the small hohlraum. Backscattering fractions of vacuum hohlraum and gas-filled hohlraum are both lower than 2%. Experimental study of this new kind of hohlraum can provide guidance for future target design and implosion experiment.

First Integrated Implosion Experiment of Three-Axis Cylindrical Hohlraum at the SGIII Laser Facility

The first integrated implosion experiment of three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH) was accomplished at the SGIII laser facility. 24 laser beams of the SGIII laser facility were carefully chosen and quasi-symmetrically injected into the TACH, in which a highly symmetric radiation filed was generated with a peak radiation temperature of ~190eV. Driven by the radiation field, the neutron yield of a deuterium gas filled capsule reached ~1e9, and the corresponding yield over clean (YOC) was ~40% for a convergence ratio (Cr) of ~17. The X-ray self-emission image of imploded capsule cores was nearly round, and the backscatter fraction of laser beams was less than 1.25%. This experiment preliminarily demonstrated the major performance of TACH, such as the robustness of symmetry, and a laser plasma instability (LPI) behavior similar to that of the outer ring of traditional cylindrical hohlraum.

Observation of anomalous π modes in photonic Floquet engineering

Recent progresses on Floquet topological phases have shed new light on time-dependant quantum systems, among which one-dimensional (1D) Floquet systems have been under extensive theoretical research. However, an unambiguous experimental observation of these 1D Floquet topological phases has still been lacking. Here, by periodically bending ultrathin metallic arrays of coupled corrugated waveguides, a photonic Floquet simulator was well designed and successfully fabricated to simulate the periodically driven Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Intriguingly, under moderate driven frequencies, we first experimentally observed and theoretically verified the Floquet topological $π$ mode propagating along the array's boundary. The different evolutionary behaviors between static and non-static topological end modes have also been clearly demonstrated. Our experiment also reveals the universal high-frequency behavior in perically driven systems. We emphasize that, our system can serve as a powerful and versatile testing ground for various phenomena related to time-dependant 1D quantum phases, such as Thouless charge pumping and manybody localization.

Engineering topological phases in the Luttinger semimetal $α$-Sn

$α$-Sn is well known as a typical Luttinger semimetal with a quadratic band touching at the $Γ$ point. Based on the effective $k\cdot p$ analysis as well as first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that multiple topological phases with a rich diagram, including topological insulator, Dirac semimetal, and Weyl semimetal phases, can be induced and engineered in $α$-Sn by external strains, magnetic fields, and circularly polarized light (CPL). Intriguingly, not only the conventional type-I Weyl nodes, but also type-II Weyl nodes and double-Weyl nodes can be generated directly from the quadratic semimetal by applying a magnetic field or CPL. Our results apply equally well to other Luttinger semimetals with similar crystal and electronic structures, and thus open an avenue for realizing and engineering multiple topological phases on a versatile platform.

Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation in NOMA Heterogeneous Networks

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has attracted much recent attention owing to its capability for improving the system spectral efficiency in wireless communications. Deploying NOMA in heterogeneous network can satisfy users' explosive data traffic requirements, and NOMA will likely play an important role in the fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication networks. However, NOMA brings new technical challenges on resource allocation due to the mutual cross-tier interference in heterogeneous networks. In this article, to study the tradeoff between data rate performance and energy consumption in NOMA, we examine the problem of energy-efficient user scheduling and power optimization in 5G NOMA heterogeneous networks. The energy-efficient user scheduling and power allocation schemes are introduced for the downlink 5G NOMA heterogeneous network for perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) respectively. Simulation results show that the resource allocation schemes can significantly increase the energy efficiency of 5G NOMA heterogeneous network for both cases of perfect CSI and imperfect CSI.

Secure Communications in NOMA System: Subcarrier Assignment and Power Allocation

Secure communication is a promising technology for wireless networks because it ensures secure transmission of information. In this paper, we investigate the joint subcarrier (SC) assignment and power allocation problem for non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) amplify-and-forward two-way relay wireless networks, in the presence of eavesdroppers. By exploiting cooperative jamming (CJ) to enhance the security of the communication link, we aim to maximize the achievable secrecy energy efficiency by jointly designing the SC assignment, user pair scheduling and power allocation. Assuming the perfect knowledge of the channel state information (CSI) at the relay station, we propose a low-complexity subcarrier assignment scheme (SCAS-1), which is equivalent to many-to-many matching games, and then SCAS-2 is formulated as a secrecy energy efficiency maximization problem. The secure power allocation problem is modeled as a convex geometric programming problem, and then solved by interior point methods. Simulation results demonstrate that the effectiveness of the proposed SSPA algorithms under scenarios of using and not using CJ, respectively.

Topological Phase Transition-Induced Tri-Axial Vector Magnetoresistance in (Bi1-xInx)2Se3 Nanodevices

We report the study of a tri-axial vector magnetoresistance (MR) in nonmagnetic (Bi1-xInx)2Se3 nanodevices at the composition of x = 0.08. We show a dumbbell-shaped in-plane negative MR up to room temperature as well as a large out-of-plane positive MR. MR at three directions is about in a -3%: -1%: 225% ratio at 2 K. Through both the thickness and composition-dependent magnetotransport measurements, we show that the in-plane negative MR is due to the topological phase transition enhanced intersurface coupling near the topological critical point. Our devices suggest the great potential for room-temperature spintronic applications, for example, vector magnetic sensors.

Observation of Coulomb gap in the quantum spin Hall candidate single-layer 1T'-WTe$_2$

The two-dimensional topological insulators (2DTI) host a full gap in the bulk band, induced by spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect, together with the topologically protected gapless edge states. However, the SOC-induced gap is usually small, and it is challenging to suppress the bulk conductance and thus to realize the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect. In this study, we find a novel mechanism to effectively suppress the bulk conductance. By using the quasiparticle interference (QPI) technique with scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), we demonstrate that the QSH candidate single-layer 1T'-WTe$_2$ has a semi-metal bulk band structure with no full SOC-induced gap. Surprisingly, in this two-dimensional system, we find the electron interactions open a Coulomb gap which is always pinned at the Fermi energy (E$_F$). The opening of the Coulomb gap can efficiently diminish the bulk state at the E$_F$ and is in favor of the observation of the quantized conduction of topological edge states.

Downlink Energy Efficiency of Power Allocation and Wireless Backhaul Bandwidth Allocation in Heterogeneous Small Cell Networks

The widespread application of wireless services and dense devices access have triggered huge energy consumption. Because of the environmental and financial considerations, energy-efficient design in wireless networks becomes an inevitable trend. To the best of the authors' knowledge, energy-efficient orthogonal frequency division multiple access heterogeneous small cell optimization comprehensively considering energy efficiency maximization, power allocation, wireless backhaul bandwidth allocation, and user Quality of Service is a novel approach and research direction, and it has not been investigated. In this paper, we study the energy-efficient power allocation and wireless backhaul bandwidth allocation in orthogonal frequency division multiple access heterogeneous small cell networks. Different from the existing resource allocation schemes that maximize the throughput, the studied scheme maximizes energy efficiency by allocating both transmit power of each small cell base station to users and bandwidth for backhauling, according to the channel state information and the circuit power consumption. The problem is first formulated as a non-convex nonlinear programming problem and then it is decomposed into two convex subproblems. A near optimal iterative resource allocation algorithm is designed to solve the resource allocation problem. A suboptimal low-complexity approach is also developed by exploring the inherent structure and property of the energy-efficient design. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms by comparing with the existing schemes.
